    Nikon FF Mirrorless

Its predominantly jpeg usage in sport because of the buffer depth and clearing and to keep the overall pipeline speed up. Network transfer off the camera to the edit computer and then onward transmission to agency servers through the internet are a bigger bottleneck than the processing inside the editing app (which will primarily be cropping rather than image manipulation) so raw even off 20-24mp cameras like D5 etc is too slow. I do sometimes use a D800/D810 alongside my 'real' sports cameras for some jobs and you can feel the workflow slow down even with jpegs. That will change over time with faster network transmission but for now thats the reality of it if you're shooting for live editorial. The point about whether someone not buying 256 or 512gb cards is 'frankly not being a pro' is a moot one though as the images aren't actually on the cards long enough to warrant needing that size of storage.

  2. As your EOSHD user name is the same as the ebay seller's name - is it safe to assume that you are the ebay seller? If so, it would be better to be up front about you wanting to promote something your selling on ebay. Anyways, good luck with the sale.

  3. I have a very rare Canon lens for sale as well. It's the 1 of 1 Cinegain Signature Edition Canon EF-S 10-18mm IS STM (the white marker signature on the front element gives it a very unique look). Due to its desirable nature, I'd say we start bidding here from $39,999.00 as well. Bargain really.

  6. It's good 'nuff for me. Serious question: are people complaining about this tech actually trying to make anything "for reals" with it? If this is strictly a technical discussion, I'll disappear --but I'm operating under the assumption that some of us are actual creatives. Yeah, I'm feeling salty, but I do find it amusing that many shooters prone to making videos of municipal park leaves, or people walking through tourist destinations, care so much about the the barely discernible nuances and intricacies of codecs. I don't know, maybe I shouldn't be bothered by it. If people want to grab that tiger by the tail, go for it. Who am I to say?

  8. They had better have the best product since sliced bread! If you are just starting out fresh I doubt Canon, and Nikon particularly are about the last camera kit you would buy if you are going big time into it. Especially into the video side of it. Panny, Sony and Fuji are on a roll. Olympus seems to have fallen by the wayside? I have no clue who is buying Nikon high end stuff the way it is other than the same old turds that are against Mirrorless bodies. Canon and Nikon had Better hit a home run, hell make it a Grand Slam HR to slow down the momentum the 3 company's above had made. I would say Fuji has bit into Nikon more than Canon. Just having a decent body in this day and age is hardly a reason to spend 5 to 7 thousand dollars on a new kit. As you stated Sony has proved that. Output and features sell high end stuff now. There will be 200 reviews on You Tube the first day ripping Nikon's ass if it is a dog. Speaking of Sony Bodies, I broke the SD card door on my A7s yesterday! 169 bucks to fix it out in California, plus shipping both ways. Damn it. They have to put a whole new back on it.

    Cheap 1080p FF DSLR?

Because I missed it, and my Nikon glass. Bought it mainly for photography, not video. Also I greatly missed the controls.

Indeed. Even with the 256gig card, at between 10-14mb per jpeg that's well over 20,000 eggs so its a f***ing big basket

  11. I wonder, is it easier to make money as a hustler, or just figure out a stable career and roll with that? Maybe the chase exploiting a mark offers some sort of insidious thrill... I don't know. Just know I've never been inclined to take advantage of anyone in order to get wealthier.

  13. This shouldn't be happening in FCPX, with Show HDR as Raw Values selected. I am going to look into what is going on. Maybe Apple have done an update, and there is now another setting which needs changing... Stay tuned! In the meantime, a quick fix is that this will ONLY happen with the HDR V4. If you try the other V4 profiles, they doesn't use Hybrid LOG Gamma so it won't be an issue. And it is fine in other NLEs like Resolve. You might try transcoding to ProRes as well. That will remove the HDR metadata... Or possibly try deleting or moving the XML files in the XAVC-S folder?

  14. Please explain/articulate what you mean by more! The believe that 8bit is better, is confirmation bias tricking your mind. The various color profiles (ignoring v-logl for a moment) by nature don't change the amount of color that ends up in the footage, they change how the the color captured by the sensor is transformed. A given color is made brighter or darker, shifted towards red or green etc. Your eyes can't even discern the difference between two similar shades of 8 bit color, let alone 10 bit. You can verify this your self, by going into any 8 bit editor, like paint, or photoshop, etc. Draw a big box on the screen, and fillet it with one color say pure red (255,0,0). Mask of half the box so it stays pure red, and then make the other un-masked side (254,0,0). You will not be able to tell the difference between the 2 shades. keep dropping down from 254, to 253, 252 etc until you are sure you can see the line where the color changes. If you can tell the difference between 245 and 255 then you need a 10 shade spread to see a color difference. Now you need to realize that in 10 bit that becomes a 40 shade spread. Your ability to discern the difference gets worse with age, and it can also be skewed for a given color if you have any kind of color blindness. Dynamic range is a similar affair, the gh5 sensor is capable of a little over 12 stops at base iso. Your eyes are only capable of 10 stops, and again it can get worse with age and various medical conditions. Your getting beat up because you analysis reads as someone who has a serious lack of understanding about bit depth, chroma sub sampling, and their benefits or lack of, when it comes to video production. it a similar thing when it comes to codecs. Right out of any camera 10 bit isn't inherently better than 8 bit, 4:2:2 isn't better than 4:2:0 either. Higher bit depths and higher chroma sub-sampling are only really beneficial if you are going to push the footage around in post. higher bit depth and chroma sub-sampling can be pushed farther before the footage falls apart. This is important when it comes to major motion pictures and the like, because what comes out of the camera is usually drastically different to what ends up on the screen. Codecs are the same, Noe one codec is inherently better than another by default. Prores or dnxhr isn't better than h.264. or h.265, or any of the other million codecs out there. They each have their pros and cons, and what is best is very situation specific. It sounds like you are confusing dynamic range with bit depth.

  16. Moza Air is a better option - IMO - than the Aircross. They can be found barely used on Ebay for cheap, can easily fly larger DSLR's, max payload is 5.5 lbs, great app, cheap batteries and comes with the little tripod/stand plus the add-on dual handle grip. If not, the various Zhiyun Cranes can also be found cheap. Chris

PM me. We can talk lights all day. ? The 28mm 1.8 is a hidden gem. Not a whiz kid when it comes to test charts, but what a render.

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

Thanks! I set the WB to give off the best red and blue sky using V-Log. As for the border I took bits and pieces from different sources around the web and added them all in Photoshop and then animated the border movement in After Effects!

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

@Sage Nice work on this, I had a chance to play with them last night with my new GH5. Can't wait to shoot something interesting! I have a question about something you mentioned on Vimeo, saying Full-HD All-I was the best shooting mode for GH5 (slightly upscaled to 1998x1080 [1.85:1 2K]) . Can you expand on that a little? Are you saying it's just better than 4K LongGOP or 4K All-I too?

    Sony RX100 4

Thanks guy. I'll probably stay in M-mode to at least lock aperture and shutter without pressing anything. UGHH We are sorry to learn that you are unable to find a certain focus mode to suit video shooting. With reference to your enquiry regarding the various focus modes, we would like to clarify that if you shoot movies when Focus Mode is set to Single-shot AF or DMF, the Focus Mode will automatically change to (Continuous AF) and then continue to focus. 26. LP-E6 canon battery is almost the same size as Panasonic batteries, but not sure if it has the same juice. Blackmagic cameras use FGPA which is a less optimized board compared to an ASIC and requires more power. It has an advantage of shorter production cycles especially in lower volume cameras because you can easily make last-minute adjustments if you want to add more features. ASICs is very locked in as they are expensive to manufacture. They use solid state peltier cooling to handle the heat distribution and that uses a lot of power. I don't know if other cameras use that but it does make a difference. I don't think type of compression plays a big part in heat, it's mainly the sensor. Blackmagic is not very experienced in building DSLR form-factor cameras yet, in what is only their second attempt they produced a camera at half the price of the GH5s that will likely be a serious rival in image quality. I think Blackmagic made the right compromises to get it at the price it is.
