  1. Pocket 4K and UMP on Gen 4 match colour-wise very well IMHO.

  2. Thanks for the "welcomes". I (and others at BMD) have been following this thread (and threads elsewhere) so we're aware of what people are discussing and asking but in general we don't/can't comment on a lot of things before release sorry. We appreciate the support and are working hard to deliver the best we can offer you all.

  5. Yeah I follow Casey Neistat for lack of anything else to do LoL. And he is not doing 4K now, and to be honest it looks like shit. "WHY DONT YOU SHOOOT 4k YOU IDIOT!" applies to him also in my opinion. It Ain't like he can't afford the stuff to do it!

  6. 60% of my audience watches on a Desktop. Many of those desktops are probably 5K iMacs. Making assumptions like this are only an overall assumption. When your audience is a bunch of video and photo pros, resolution matters. Also, shooting at 16mm focal length in full frame 4k gives me a wide, medium, and tight zoom in option. I still edit on a 4k timeline and zoom in on the 4k actually. Nobody cares about the resolution loss on the zoom ins. for me personally I like the zooms for comedy. As far as post production, shooting 4k in 8bit on a sony is as easy to edit with as 1080p .... at least on my base model 13" MBP in FCPX

  9. Since we have an insider here, are you able to provide us with some real, new info? Is there a plan for any sample footage to be released soon? Is September still a realistic estimate? Is that global or just a handful of stores to meet the suggested release time? Of course, I (and I assume the rest of us) understand if you're unable to provide any more information. The silence is deafening.

Well I guess I had a Senior Moment as they say. ? 8mp Is basically 4K LoL. So yeah even 8K is 33.2 so I would say a hell of a lot of Nikon, Canon lenses should do that also. My bad. ☹️

  14. Well that kind of sucks LoL. They look sort of like normal Glasses. Hmm. I am not sure what has happened to Intel. They went like a house on fire for years, and now they just seem to have hit a wall. Is the whole computer industry that way, or have Intel just run out of ideas? I really don't keep up with gaming much anymore. It raises my Blood Pressure too much. Not good for Old People LoL. ?

  17. Sorry, but that’s just silly. I am getting way too OT, so this will be my last comment on it... YouTube videos are a business for some and in any business you want to maximize profits. In any creative endeavor you must know your audience... so if the majority of your audience watches YT videos on their phones and they will gain barely any benefit in 4K over 1080p, why spend the money on a 4K camera when you can spend a quarter of the cost for a 1080p image? When you add the extra time for post production, it hardly seems like a solid business decision. Now of course, this isn’t my time or money, so any excuse is good enough... even if it is “I want to.” But “lowest common denominator” is probably not the smartest way to describe your primary audience... good thing you’re just a hobbyist too I guess. Sorry for the OT.
    1 point
  18. Yup, that makes sense, but also out of curiosity, at what point do you decide, when the option is yours, to shoot at a lesser resolution for cost effectiveness? I imagine a 1080p production through post is more time consuming than a 1080p production, so are there some jobs that you will shoot in 1080p to maximize your profits?

  19. GH5 is hard to beat really. It’s a unique camera that can film almost anything you throw at it. The emotive part is missing for me though on the GH5. When I use or see great full frame footage, I feel tingly. I don’t quite tingle with the GH5, even on the XL SB. I don’t think weak Sony colour is a thing anymore. You’ve proved that with your Sony profiles and arguably, I’d say the FS5 II in Venice edges the C200 for colour. General viewers just think “4K is better”, even if it perceives to have little difference to 1080. Up until 2016, I barely got asked about recording in 4K. Now it’s one of the first thing EVERYONE asks. So for Dave, yeah 4k is a plus because “4k is better”, isn’t it? ?

  20. The ability to crop and reframe without it looking like s**t. Also “future proofing”, so when 4K is the normal viewing standard, his older work still has that 4K option for viewers.

  21. I think this depends on what level of film-making you're doing. The professional colourists over at liftgammagain are likely working with RAW and high quality Prores files from the high end cinema cameras, and live in a different world to the one we talk about on here. There was a thread about buying "cheap" client monitors for their grading studio (these aren't monitors to grade with, they're only for the clients to view the grade) and I just about had a heart attack when someone said that their budget was $8000 per monitor, and they were looking to buy half-a-dozen of them!!

  22. All those things go out the window for me as a daily Youtuber. Reliable AF and great low light in full frame 4k is all I need. Good in camera audio as well is important to me. Color science is better though. A7III paired with EOSHD ProColor V4 is great. almost 3hr battery too! Unless the GH6/S has better AF I won't switch. Its a necessity for me now days....

  23. But... but... but... What you are saying here goes against all forms of logic!!! What about the 30-minute record limit? What about the overheating? What about the tilt-only screen? What about the 8-bit codec? What about the lack of 4K 60p? What about the sharper 1080p on the GH5? What about the micro HD port? What about the waveform monitor on the GH5? What about the Sony color "science"??? Did they fire the twelve-year-old intern who was previously in charge of color science for Sony? This is heresy ? p.s. please don't flame me. I own four sony cameras.

  24. I’m in the same boat as @EOSHD_Twitter the Sony is more reliable. Better workhorse and the full frame sensor is great to have. As much as I love the video specs on a GH5/S, the reliability and image out of the Sony is better to me. And i know the canon mirrorless won’t have IBIS or flat profiles or the ability to plug in an XLR mic like the sony

  29. I remember back in the day seeing a little video about a guy who worked for Nokia whose job it was to travel the world and see what cool things people were doing with phones, and report those things back to Nokia as product and feature development ideas. One of the most interesting ones he mentioned was that villagers in rural Africa were buying a mobile phone as a business for their village. Obviously the other villagers would pay them to be able to call people on the phone, and the phone owner would make a percentage, but the big thing was that the phone acted like a bank. In Africa there is a very rural-oriented culture where people go into the city to get a job for a few years, but are sending the money back to their families in their village. So the city worker buys a pre-paid phone card, sends the card details to the phone owner in the village who then pays the family most of the value of the card, taking a percentage on top as a 'transaction fee'. I thought this was brilliant for Nokia to be basically crowd-sourcing their R&D. I wonder if Apple or Samsung are doing similarly, or if perhaps the innovation is simply in software not business models? The most interesting thing about the smartphone, to me at least, was that it's basically a generic device, it has no specific interface, no specific display limitations, no specific processing limitations, etc. It's a device that can be adapted to as many different styles of interface, display, or app design that app developers care to create. It's kind of the antithesis of how old phones used to work (and how cameras currently work) where you choose a product and you get their hardware, their OS, and their apps all in one.

  30. I agree that the chipset and requirement for AC power are both severely limiting factors.. I watched a Hackintosh video where the guy mentioned something about the compatibility of various chipset manufacturers that surprised me, but the fact they didn't put a higher powered Radeon in there is a bit strange perhaps.. Unless it was designed to a spec, perhaps something like "FCPX must be able to play 4K 30 in real-time with 2 LUTs and some basic curves adjustments applied on the nicest Apple display" or similar? The first battery-powered one will be interesting. One thing I learned over at liftgammagain is that you can ingest footage with a slower machine, you can generate proxies with a slower machine, you can edit with proxies, you can do sound with proxy video, but you can't grade with proxies, so if you are grading in front of a client then your machine needs to be able to play the original footage with all the grades applied in real-time. Grading, however, is done in a controlled lighting situation with calibrated monitors, so it's a situation where AC power is available, so in that sense an AC powered solution still makes sense. Personally I don't need to be able to play graded footage in real-time, so it doesn't matter for me. I'm happy to scrub the playhead around and see how things look over the footage, and then render it out and watch that render back again, and then make changes if required. For my home videos my 'clients' are my family so I can play them the mostly finished project and get their inputs but also be reviewing the output for any strange things that catch my eye too.

This cheap lens discontinued two decades ago, a lens that even Ken put that in Nikon 10 worst lenses list! I put this on D7500, an almost 6k DX sensor, equivalent to 8k FF sensor, and resolution was pretty good. Sure you find many optical shortcomings in these things, but thats not all because they are old! They're designed for film, which has a slight curve, not for perfectly flat digital sensors, so corners are softer that what they looked in 1980. AND they're designed to be compact, suitable for FM2 style cameras. when you prioritize the size, you have to make compromise in optics.

  34. I would bet this new BM P4K will kick Anything Canon has, and brings out under 8000 bucks hands down. Won't be as slick to operate, but output wise, You know it will win. Hell the little BMPCC can have as good or better output now. Did you see that Video I just put up, not mine, in the Blackmagic Sub Forum. Hell no Canon can do that.

  35. Crushes, wow that is a pretty over the top statement. Using ML it might. But hell Canon didn't have shit to do with that. And how many people even use it. @mercer is the only one left that isn't banned on here still using it!! ? I don't think Canon is "crushing" anything as of late video wise. 5D mk IV, C700, M50, ehh not my idea of leading the pack. Sort of middle of the Pack. Lackluster sales at best on them. C200 might be a bright spot, but not if you Have to Have that middle codec. And well you sort of do! Raw is not really a great alternative All the time you need a broadcast Codec. But it is a nice camera, not saying it isn't. Just why did they not go that extra Codec, why! We know why, but why not. And you Know Canon will F up this new mirrorless someway. They are not going to get it right on the first try no matter how hard they try. Nikon either. They both have a Ton of stuff to implement they have never really done before. I don't envy them I will tell you that. And add new lenses to the mix, Wow.

Found it when looking for lens resolution. Makes total sense. So FF is not really any better than m4/3 for diffraction. Written by Paul De Bra on DPR. "As the sensor gets smaller the same DoF you need requires only a larger f-stop (smaller number) and diffraction also sets in at a larger f-stop. So it doesn't really matter what system you use: you will need a different f-stop and diffraction will be just as bad at the f-stop you need. When you use m43 say 60mm f/8 your DoF will be the same as a full (35mm) 120mm lens used at f/16. And diffraction will be the same as well. So it doesn't matter whether you use m43 or full frame. To get the same image you will use an f-stop that results in the same level of diffraction. It is because of this dilemma of getting more DoF versus keeping diffraction under control that techniques like focus stacking have been invented. To get more in focus without diffraction you need focus stacking. Whether you use a smaller or larger sensor has essentially no influence".

But why??? Not trolling, just STILL trying to decide between them (and yes, I know that by the time I make a decision on whether to buy the GH5 or a7 III, the GH6 and a7 IV will probably be out...) If only we can get @mercer and his cat overlord to switch from Canon to Sony then balance in the universe will have been restored / utterly destroyed...

Errr... still missing the point I think? As what I'm saying has nothing to do with how fast the flashes cycle (heck, they could take 10 minutes to recharge for the next flash for all I care, it doesn't impact my point. ) But in your case, you want opposite and them to fire potentially dozens of times a second, and perfectly (so a timecode box with genlock attached to the flashes?? :-o ) in sync with the camera shutter?? Yeah, nah. We know how bad it is for the subject being blinded by flashes a few times in a row, could you imagine doing that many times a second for minutes at a time? Quick path to becoming the most hated photographer in town! It means something IF someone pays that much for it. As then the market is created with a seller and a buyer. Exactly. I find it hilarious when people say still lenses are not good enough to resolve 4K detail. Wow! Yeah, someone lower level like him won't be touching a super early release model but something very similar to the actual production model itself. So the official launch can not be too many weeks away. Edit: Well well well, from NR: NR busy busy busy busy!!! Breaking records for sure.

  46. Stoked to have bought the camera last week. Everything brand new in the box for around 5,500€ which I feel was a pretty good price. Bought a couple of Komputerbay CFAST cards which seem to be working out well so far. I've heard they can be hit and miss but didn't feel like paying 2x that price for the Sandisk. The camera is a dream to operate, but I'm kind of surprised how tricky it is to shoot RAW at first. My first tests had a ton of noise, and the post-production workflow in FCPX makes things a little complicated by automatically applying a Canon CLOG 2 viewing LUT. Started grading the RAW footage first and then applying a standard Alexa Log LUT from IMPULZ and have been seeing some great results. The 4K 10bit 60fps is really beautiful and produces really smooth, rich results. Will be testing it out over the coming fortnight and will hopefully edit something together to show some results. Oh, one thing. FCPX is magic. I'm on a maxed out 2014 Macbook Pro (yes, 2014) and I can smoothly playback and grade the RAW before transcoding. Which is insane. After creating proxies and throwing a little more footage on the timeline I've had hardly any issues at all. Also, if anyone has used the C200 and the Sigma 18-35, could they share their experiences? I'm looking into grabbing that but not sure how it would be to operate handheld without lens IS.

Haha yeah, I've always said that these camera choice dilemmas do get in the way of the real purpose we're all imaging nuts, however when the images you produce are part of a business model which feeds your family and pays your rent, you do have to make the right choice (I haven't before and my product quality dived!). If I was shooting stuff for pleasure and fun, I'd just stick with a Sony A7 III, some mid-range lenses and a Zhiyun Crane for everything. Actually, I'm off to Greece at the end of the month for a holiday, and I'm perfectly happy taking the A6500 and the shitty kit lens. It's a fine setup for what I need it for.

As to how it worked... it worked as advertised. But I need a bit more time with it. There must be a was to limit the range, but just haven’t had time to dig into the manual.
