H.265 NX1 image quality improvement 2018
flip21 and 2 others reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
No really, the dynamic range is fine. You have to get the settings bang on. Gamma DR, -2 contrast (not too low), 16-235 and Smart Range + ON. I adjust the master pedestal as well and increase bitrate with the hack. None of that existed in firmware 1.0, so people thought it lacking. It isn't. The sensor tested for 12.8 stops on DXOMark if I remember correctly...That is more than a Canon 1D X Mark II and 1D C. On the build quality I'm afraid I have to have a divergent opinion to you sir there as well! It's superb for the price. All the controls feel solid and the magnesium alloy chassis feels like metal not plastic like it can do on a lot of other cameras (cough, cough GH4). It's also very responsive. When does it ever lag? Have you seen how fast it puts down a 28MP RAW before starting 6K readout for video? Compare that to the GH5 with it's laggy end to recording video and on many other cameras there are much slower buffer clearance times. Colour science is in Nikon-Canon league. Autofocus with the S lenses is superb, on-chip phase detect. Better ergonomics than a Sony A7 III. £800 used. NX-L for full frame. It's still the best bargain ever. So feel free to nitpick it on the basis that your battery grip might be faulty3 points -
I tend to agree that phones will eventually take over a segment of filmmaking. And if I remember correctly Soderberg said he would definitely consider shooting more films on an iPhone. I’ve been saying this for a while... future filmmakers do not care about the technical elements as much as we do. If you make your living working on films or videography, your world will change in a few years. Hell look that this forum alone... there are an increasing number of posts from newbies asking which camera they should get to start shooting weddings or corporate. People are jumping into this field without much prior knowledge and eventually phones will be more than capable enough to fill those technical roles. Right now I think the question is... which manufacturer will be the first to put a larger sensor into a phone? Apple? Samsung? Red? Hell I think Canon even has some new phone patents... get ready for the inevitable. I, for one, am excited for this. I want to tell stories, so if that can be done on a phone with a small gimbal and a lens adapter... of some sort... Then why the hell not?3 points

H.265 NX1 image quality improvement 2018
flip21 and one other reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
Is it me, or is the H.265 out of this camera getting better and better as OS support improves? I could never shoot at ISO 3200 before without it falling apart from noise and blockiness. Now I can with ease. I had the hack installed but now don't because it was giving me crashes and hangs... The bitrate increase doesn't seem to be needed because the files look without it, almost ProRes-like. Back in 2014 the NX1 was never this impressive on the codec front. I swear. And playback is so smooth in Premiere now...again like ProRes. Could it be the hardware acceleration of the latest GPUs coming into affect, lifting both playback performance AND image quality? PS...Full support in Quicktime now and latest VLC Player. No playback glitches, and Finder shows thumbnail previews.2 points -
Any ideas for a general-purpose zoom for MFT?
newfoundmass and one other reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
It's one of those perennials that pops up quite regularly when people are looking for a "standard" zoom lens for Panasonic cameras so it's in a few threads. It pops up as an option because the lens range and speed it has isn't one that you can get in a native MFT lens and if you could it would certainly cost far more than the £300-400 price you can pick up a used LX100 for. It's not a solution for everyone but it can make a lot of sense for many situations because you're basically getting a free backup camera into the bargain. Be aware though that the LX100 can't have the Cinelike D hack so you are restricted to standard profiles (or the excellent EOSHD profile) which is why it won't work out for everyone. But if it does then it's an alternative worth considering. It's one of a couple of such anomalies (like the Leica Q and Sigma DP0 Quattro) where even if you own the interchangeable lens version of the cameras (Leica SL and Sigma DP Quattro in this example) it's still actually cheaper to buy the fxed lens version of the camera if you need that focal length than it is for the equivalent lens for the interchangeable camera. As I say, it's not for everybody but if it fits your needs then it's there as an option2 points -

There have not been very many zooms at f2 or faster made for M43 or larger sensors for normal photography gear. Pretty much Sigma 18-35 1.8 (APSC), Sigma 50-100 1.8 (APSC), Sigma 24-35 f2 (FF), Olympus 14-35 f2 (4/3), Olympus 35-100 f2 (4/3) and Tokina 12-20 f2 (APSC) is it I think. Any others? That is one reason I love my A7s as ANY lens can be a 2x zoom including fast primes and exotics for Jpeg stills and video using clear image zoom. EG I have tried my old Canon FD 85 1.2 L as a 2x zoom for testing.2 points -

I ummed and ahhd about a used one during my lens buying frenzy. Slept on it and decided it was too good a price not to get it and went back into the shop the next day and they were literally handing it over to it's new owner when I arrived. Apparently it's not polite to exclaim "Oh for fucks sake" in Japanese shops. Who knew. Anyway, I thought we'd all agreed the other week that the best general purpose zoom lens for MFT was actually the LX1002 points -

What about the Olympus lenses with the MF Clutch? I think there is this variety of them? 12, 17, 7-14, 12-40, 40-150. Well I forgot the killer lens from hell. I had the RX100 V for one day. The camera is tiny... like insanely so and the features really are impressive. The image was very nice. But I got the dreaded overheating warning while in the menus without ever pressing record... in the middle of December... in 40 degree Fahrenheit weather... so... I returned it. I had it set to record 4K, so maybe in 1080p it would be okay. But if you’re shooting in 1080p, you may as well save some money and go with the Canon G7X Mark II. It’s more ergonomic, with good stabilization and AF and better color science. Or the OP could always go with an a5100 with the tiny kit zoom if 1080p will suffice. That camera is as small as a lot of compacts with the option to use other interchangeable lenses if the need arises, plus there’s the tilting screen with touchscreen PDAF.2 points -
Here’s my video review on the speed booster I got from a previous thread. Just posting here so we don’t have multiple M50 threads. Speed booster really solves the issues with the 4K crop. I wish Metabones would make an “XL” version for EF-M so it takes the 4K crop to proper super35. But still, the .71x isn’t too bad.2 points

I am never cutting edge with phones, but have just got a iPhone 7 plus and have a couple of observations. I have been using it to film barn owls in flight. OK that sounds a bit insane, but the direction of travel with this tech is clear. 1. Higher density sensor with improved digital zoom - at least for decent light conditions and HD resolution, and better processing for noise reduction. 2. Extra lenses - we already have 28mm, 56mm equiv. (I think) so why not 110? Blending the output of more than one camera opens up all sorts of possiblities. 3. Combined optical and digital stabilisation - filming at 6x zoom on my iPhone (is that around 180mm equiv?), one handed, and it is still remarkably smooth. 4. Usable, and suprisingly directional audio from a tiny microphone. 5. Very adequate, intelligent and responsive video AF. It isn't going to challenge the top of the range, but it will certainly push out a lot of the mid market competition.2 points -

I have never tried it but what about the Canon APSC 17-55 2.8 with a non focal reducer smart adapter? Not sure if it works with a Speedbooster (other focal reducers?) I had a Kipon non focal reducer smart adapter and liked that a lot but it was not great for video AF or AFC though almost native for AFS with a GX7 (all sold). If you are keeping any Canon lenses, a non focal reducer smart adapter makes sense anyway just for an increase in range.1 point

newfoundmass reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
The Panasonic LX10/15 meets the original spec. It has 3x zoom, the original poster didn't say it necessarily had to start at a 24mm equivalent. You can look at that crop one of two ways in that it's giving you less on the wide end than the RX100M5 but it's giving you more on the long end, which is something that may be more important for his/her needs. I have both the LX15 and the RX100M5 and my opinion is that I don't hate the crop (as I'm fond of the FOV anyway ) and I can always re-frame by stepping back so in that way I can match the RX100 max FOV. But what I can't do on the RX100 is make the lens faster so I have no possibility to match the LX15 in that respect. It comes down to picking what is more important I suppose for how you will be using it. I could make the point to be honest that 24mm is a bit of a meh focal length anyway as its neither fish nor fowl so neither camera goes wide enough really but again that's down to personal preference. With regard to the video itself, with the Cinelike D hack the LX10/15 bridges part of the gap to the Slog profiles of the Sony and might well be all the flat that people need in that form factor. You can use Cinelike D at any iso whereas the lowest of 1600 and 3200 for the Slog profiles does start making a bit of an issue of keeping it's original ethos of being a compact as you have to put a filter thread mount on it for a pretty nuch permanently mounted variable ND. Of course you can use the other flat but not LOG profiles in the RX100 to do the same thing but it does take away that extra advantage over the Panasonic if you do that. Again, though it's horses for courses, and if the purpose of wanting a compact is to primarily offer a better video option while travelling then that may play a part. If it's for more controlled shooting as a b camera for interviews or whatever then that'll be less of a factor. For what it's worth, I have thread mounts on both of them of course ? Speaking of thread mounts, in light of the debate on the Sony RX100M6 thread, I've picked up a very high quality screw on Sony 2x TC for a ridiculous £25 to have an experiment with. Suffice to say from early tests, my RX100M5 can now be an M6 whenever it feels like It works on the LX15 as well and a bit of lateral thinking has me now hunting down the wide equivalent for a similar bargain price to take care of the other end if I really need it. If I had to keep only one of these cameras then it would have to be the RX100M5 but that is purely because it has live HDMI output which is non negotiable for what I'm primarily using it for in a work capacity. If it was just for personal use as a compact camera where that wasn't a requirement then I think I'd go for the Panasonic with the Cinelike D hack because it's half the price, it's far more than half the camera for what I'd be using it for and not least because whoever does Sony's user interface is a sadist. Oh and it doesn't burn your hand if you have the temerity to want to use it for a while1 point -

Is the Van Diemen (V.1) Mod worth it?
Andrew Clunie reacted to jaquet for a topic
Long story short. Stay with the original ISCO if you plan to do a simple V1 modification. The close focus distance is the same as if you mod it by yourself. The additional weight is a problem if you gonna try to screw it in front of a plastic Nikon pancake. You shouldn't trust that tiny lens to hold a heavy lens like the V1 will be. So you will need a lens support. The V1 does not vignette more than with the original design within the SAME focus range. The distances are the same. But if the front stays 72mm it will vignette at the new and closer close focus, because of the small front element that comes out further than on the original ISCO. That's why i asked Christopher at VD to make a 77mm front to get a little less vignetting on the 50 pancake. So, it works. And sometimes you want to slide the rear element into the front of a taking lens and stay more flexible in the selection of the lenses. That was the V1+ mod (77mm front and no screw-in rear element) Yes, i did them all and even more. DIY mod, VD-V1, V1+, V2, V2+ The V2 is worth it. 77mm non rotating front, 85mm close focus! But at that prize … Sometimes I wish I had stayed with the original ISCO. Screw it on and ready to go. But for serious tasks (first AC, FF motor, …) you'll need that rehousing. But for that prize you can rent everything without headache … It's like a dog chasing his tail – eternally … ?1 point -

Wow, now my lens related parts of comment disappeared by commenting on something else. Guess, this is an edit now. So, again: @kidzrevil Awesome shots and magnificient colors. Really standing out. Makes me want to chase some natural light more! Findings about the Fujinon 12.5mm c-mount super16 lens. Awesome! No crop on GX85 in UHD mode plus electronic IBIS. Put focal length on the smallest number, think it was 6mm, to avoid wobbliing vignette. Great image, colors. Really usuable at F2. My new favorite lens on the GX85. I guess I will keep the GX. Perfect combo. Crop (compared to 135 photofilm) in 4K plus electronic IBIS should be around 2.4, making it an equivalent of 15mm on m43 full sensor.1 point

Yeah I agree the that first video is too saturated for my tastes also. But that is a Apple thing apparently that most Normal" people really like LoL. It states that there was No color correction done. I am sure a skilled colorist can make a iPhone look like a Arri if they want in this day and age. And I don't think you can really ignore, or dismiss them as a somewhat serious video and photo tool anymore. They can get the job done in a lot of situations. Low light, well not so much, but they do sell light you know. ?1 point -

Have you seen the trailer? Is bad, it LOOKS LIKE it is was shot on a cellphone. No surprises there. However, due to the nature of the story the cellphone style kinda sort of works for the film in a way. Not such a bad choice selecting a cellphone for it as this might have been for some other styles of films. (like if you tried doing a traditional Western or a Victoria period piece in London, then it would be much tougher to make a smartphone work for that type of film)1 point

Looks nice on paper but let's see in real life. It's not a Mavic Pro competitor but aims at the Mavic Air market. 21mp on such small sensor might actually hurt the image quality. The reason is that Parrot needs this extra resolution to do electronic image stabilization since the camera is only mounted on two axis (pitch and roll). The drone is bigger than the Mavic Air but also lighter, will it hurt the stability? It looks interesting and we need more competition against DJI but this is too early to tell at this point. It could be a serious challenger or just another "meh" drone that will be forgotten in two months like so many before. Let's wait for the first reviews and video samples. @Kisaha $6991 point

Well I just got my Apple iPhone 10, 256 GB back from my son for good. I have not taken anything yet, but the spec on it are pretty amazing to be honest. Now that they have dual camera, and hell 4K 60p, stabilization, DoF defocus, I don't see why with a good 3rd party App, why you can't make something worth happening. Maybe not a Blockbuster movie, but a pretty damn good output surely is possible with the skill a lot of people on here have. It has to be more fun than dragging out a Arri Alexa setup LoL. That new DJI phone Gimbal for 199 bucks looks damn good. I am going to look into it in a few days. Like they say you always have it with you. Would make at least a hell of a good B Roll camera. This was shot in Jerome, Arizona with my iPhone 6s Plus.1 point -

The following comes from a guy using FCP X, but don't worry, I won't try to baptize you ? First thing you have to do, of course, is to manage your media. JBOD is very risky. I have a raid5 TB, and recently one of four disks died. Easy enough to replace this, but what if the whole controller died? Go with JBOD, but provide redundancy, in short: a complete backup, elsewhere. Never ever run out of disk space! Sounds wrong, is wrong. You should better split the project. Has nothing to do with performance or launch time. There is a threshold beyond which you simply invite disaster. A project of this size can't be managed. And with it going over several versions of the NLE ... Good idea. However, Premiere may be less dependent on a specific OS, but I doubt very much that Premiere 2018 will run on prehistoric Mountain Lion. If it can be installed in the first place, it will probably creep. That said, there almost certainly is a way to split your project with your old OSX and PP version. Like, saving as, deleting all edits not used for the part you want to create and consolidating it with copying to an external disk. Or so. There may also be third party software to manage the project. It's all about instant and continuous access to databases. Have your media in compact bundles, separated from caches, render files and project files. Limit the number of files Premiere has to access all at once to a few hundred. Remember, Premiere only has to open the folder(s) that contain(s) material for the current sequence. Close the timelines not in use. Split episodes to scenes (=sequences, rarely longer than 10 minutes). But even if for a short timeline Premiere has to open 8 folders containing 4000 clips, you are asking for trouble.1 point
