Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
newfoundmass and 4 others reacted to webrunner5 for a topic
Well well we all have to admit as of late the line between "Professional" and "Consumer" have really narrowed. When I was most of you guys age you either worked for a place that did video, or you bought a $200.00 at the time spring powered 8mm movie camera. If you were rich you had a Bolex, or my dream camera, a Beaulieu 4008 ZM Camera. They made beautiful looking cameras. Not too many choices compared to today. Now with the 4K BMPCC coming out it can nearly compete with rich people on an equal footing. The GH5s is amazing, the Sony A7 mk III is, the ML Canon 5D mk III, Canon C100, on and on. We live in an amazing time for video. It is now down to skill more than gear. The tables have leveled. No real excuse these days to not get the job done.5 points -

Introducing my DIY synchronized double follow focus system for ISCO 2x ULTRA STAR and Biometar 2.8 80mm. Actually it can work with any taken lenses. You just need to print another gear for the lens and calibrate it with three buttons. Also you can use even another adapter. Then you need to reprint all the holders and gears. It is quite noisy. I guess I have to find another silent motors. But look how it works. https://youtu.be/XT2UbgYFvlI2 points -

Really? Does that require an answer? You think that, yourself, a person who has bullied and harassed multiple people on this forum for years, including a really prominent DP, John Brawley, can continue such behavior and be free from my dorky act of "downvoting"? With your continual act of calling people "assholes" and "f*ckers" and using sexual harassment towards said members. Well at least you are no longer an admin. You may be in your 70's, but you act like you're 16. And maybe you actually are 16, and pretending to be 61. Or maybe you are Ebrahim's real father, or the real Ebrahim. Or maybe you don't exist. You are just a figment of Ebrahim Jr's imagination, and this whole time he is laughing, laughing with his SLR rangefinder and playstation 4.1 point

X2 on this. You can even practise cinematic portraits with some old, battered Elinchrom or Bowens strobes that you got for 100 on ebay that output a similar amount of power (for a still) as a really expensive movie light. Obviously compared directly the quality of light of a big 10-20K fresnel/HMI will be a bit different to a small flash head but you can learn to work with light and get a decent idea of what you can accomplish in a small kit.1 point

Sony Mavica digital camera help
kye reacted to Mark Romero 2 for a topic
Ahhh.... the Mavica.... It was actually great for getting a lot of (poor quality) product shots on to a website real quickly. I remember the day I sold it and got an Olympus 3030 Zoom instead. One of the only affordable little cameras that had a hot shoe mount. I put a PC Sync shoe in the hot shoe and used that to run my Paul C. Buff White Lightning (the Original Coffee Can) strobes. Good times.1 point -

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K

Ursa Mini Pro is hands down the best image and features under $10k for professional cinema use. John Brawley was using them as a smaller camera alongside the Alexa for a lot of shows, and while I do think that while he will probably continue to use them for a while, the Sony Venice is pretty interesting. The tethered head can get almost Blackmagic micro-like shots, and venice's current size/weight is not too far off from the Ursa Mini Pro. It also records Prores 4:4:4 as well. Ursa Mini Pro is interesting because it's too cheap, which also makes it possibly seem expensive as well. Sounds weird, but it's SO CHEAP when in reality its feature set and images can be compared to really expensive cinema cameras. But because it's priced like prosumer or higher end ENG/cine style camera combos (FS7, EVA-1, C200) it's bigger, heavier, with lesser ISO performance. And because it lacks autofocus and other convenience features such as smaller recording codecs, it's slightly less practical than those cameras for low-end jobs.1 point -

Although post isn't my specialist area, I've been doing a fair bit of ADR/foley recording on the side lately, did some ADR with Doug Brooks last night, and this vlog was some ADR & foley I did with Logan Marshall a couple of weeks ago:1 point

Going off the street photography for practice thing. You could try making a series of 1 minute docs about your town. Episode 1 - the people there, try to get comments from people on the street about what they like/dislike about the town Episode 2 - the business and shops there Episode 3 - the parks and recreational spaces Episode 4 - what's there for tourists, what do they think of the town? Episode 5 - tell us about the nightlife. This will give you an interesting story, and hopefully something you'd be keen to edit and produce. While also giving you all kinds of situations to test your gear out. I doubt it'll take more than a day to film each episode, and limiting yourself to 1 or 2 minutes means you can edit it in an afternoon. It also means you'll be more careful with what you shoot, since you don't need hours of broll.1 point

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
IronFilm reacted to Savannah Miller for a topic
Back in 2012, Blackmagic did not have S35 cameras, OLPFs, 3D LUT support, Lens Mounts, 60fps. A dedicated monitor out as well, dual XLR, Timecode IO, 3D sync, and Wifi too. This camera was much aggressive and high-end than the original BMCC but with the image, it had noticeably less dynamic range and the color was not as nice.1 point -
How do you practice?
Charlie reacted to zerocool22 for a topic
I never practice, I practice during projects. So I #@{* up some projects now and then because I am trying out some new things. Sometimes it pans out, mostly it does not. You learn from your mistakes. I don't like filming stuff for practice (as in uninteresting subjects with bad lighting) as it would kill my love for shooting.1 point -
Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
IronFilm reacted to Savannah Miller for a topic
No. Kinefinity released a 4K camera about the same time as Blackmagic and they were doing high framerate 60fps+ WELL before blackmagic was. It came out in 2014 but was slow to ship similar to the BMPC. But they also had a model that released in 2012 called the KineRAW S35 which had a 4K sensor and could record 60fps. They were an existing camera manufacturer that made astro cameras, and they were way more aggressive in giving features that Blackmagic wasn't. BUT, they had more fundamental issues with their images that Blackmagic did not. Blackmagic had in the early days some issues with moire and aliasing due to not having an OLPF on their lower resolution sensors. When they switched to 4K+ it was less of a problem. Kinefinity had tons of artifacting when shooting in the various high framerate and "sport" modes that their cameras offer. Their monitors also had serious lag issues which they still haven't fixed on their newer cams. But in terms of giving a camera that on paper was supposed to compete with RED cameras, they did it first. So in the early days when it came to Kinefinity vs. Blackmagic, Blackmagic was the realistic and safer option to buy. Now though, Kinefinity is offering so much high-end stuff (Kineback W, Small form factor with a Pro lineup of accessories), that they are now putting out something completely different to Blackmagic and they have their own niche. This is from 2012 and it has 60fps, interchangeable lens mount, etc. I'm pretty sure they had a cinema camera before that.1 point -
Manual mode and you can set auto iso range, that's probably the best. I wouldn't use S for video as diffraction can wreck a shot while non-180 degrees are ok.1 point

Yeah, something like that. IIRC the shots I looked at yesterday were about 250Kb? I would have been maxing out all the settings - I remember I took about 20 disks out shooting with me that day... disk space to BURN!!1 point

With Canon I always turned IS off since it was in the lens. I've been lazy with the IBIS on the a7r2, I mostly forget to turn it off - even when shooting 42mp stills - and I've seen no ill effects. Chris1 point -

Very good post. Yeah if you have the skill you can make a movie with a 3 year old Smartphone look better than most people can if you Gave them a Arri Alexa. And yes, if you are not making lots of money a Canon T2i with the plastic kit lens gets the job done. Heck I still think the original BMPCC is pretty much all a heck of a lot of people into video really need below the Pro level. And this new 4K one, Wow what else you need other than super duper AF, and that is still up in the air on it..1 point -

Nice contributions so far guys.. keep em coming! I just got my pre36 and have rigged it up. Definitely missing the flares from my now sold Sun 2x.. the isco flares in such a boring way.. but the trade off is sharpness, resolution, form factor, and just about everything else ! I’m sure I’ll learn to love the isco flaring, but from my testing so far, it seems a little too ‘clinical’. Anyway, here’s a photo;1 point -
Fuck you, the depth is impressive, love it. The 5D is a beast, I wouldn't call this filmic, to me it looks hyper-realistic.1 point

1. Thank you! I really appreciate this. We don't really think so mush about this, we just do films the way we like to watch films ourself. (and we don't watch a lot of Beck) 2. It wasn't that hard. I attach some BTS stills of the camera 3. Of course! Easter eggs from most of my favorite films can be spotted in the movie. I'll send you a dammsugare if you can spot homages to The lord of the rings, Jurassic Park, Lost and Home Alone. I think this is the numbers you are looking for: 120 shooting days 79 hours of raw material 420 vfx shots 19 crashed cars Over 1000 extras 360 000 liter rain 3 broken bones 82 locations 3000 liter coffee 7 liter fake blood1 point -

(No spoilers ahead) I went to see this as it premiered last Wednesday and was blown awat by what they're pulling off compared to typical Swedish feature film productions. I also went to an event the week before with FSF (SSC - Swedish Society of Cinematographers) and heard the DP Hannes <insert last name> talk about the movie together with the colorist Ola Bäccman about the process of making the film. An additional "WHAT?!" factor, on top of the lens choices, is that they shot the entire thing in FS7:s internal XAVC-I codec except for some green/blue screen work where they went with raw. I've followed their work for years, and seeing their first feature on the big screen was truly a humbling and epic experience. Given the budget, time, experience and all that they managed to pull off an amazing film which easily lands in the top 3 Swedish films ever made in my book. My girlfriend, who didn't know about Crazy Pictures before going to the movies with me shares my enthusiasm. On top of her reaction, there was a woman in the seat next to me who was literally at the edge of her seat from 5 minutes into the movie until the very end. TL;DR: Go see it!!!!!!1 point -

This film sort of reminds me of Jackson Pollock the painter that dribbled, and threw paint on a canvas on the floor, and people thought it was the Cats Ass. Is it art or just crazy shit that is cultist? I tend to think the Latter on both. I am not saying things have to be perfection, but just being sloppy as hell, hmm. But, and this is a Big but, I think this short is a Winner. It ain't normal as they say. And this one, shot on a Red Scarlet, is the most watched short on Vimeo.1 point -

There is no installation, it's just specific settings in camera to achieve the look. Made a quick Comparison between S-LOG 3, GFILM, and EOSHD HDR. Love the results right out of camera with this. SLOG 3 just straight up breaks, GFILM still breaks but less so, and EOSHD seems to show the least compression. I've been leaning more on getting the image right in camera and not in post, and am heavily leaning towards this profile unless I'm using an external recorder.1 point -
Dji makes cameras and stabilizers which are all ground breaking at their pricepoint. The dji inspire is a game changer. Have you used it? Listen i never swore insulted a user directly on this thread. My crime is making a clickbait topic post. But still...no other camera at b and h was broken and the two sales reps both spoke poorly of the camera What does that say about a companies flagship new camera? About pontificating about bmd willingly released cameras with magneta issue because they were pressured too...of course this is not presented as fact. No one here besides maybe John would have even that kind of knowledge. This is a camera nerd message board with people using fake names like boingboing...not science magazine where everyone has a pd h. This is supposed to be a fun place to share ideas and knowledge and falso information pretending to be an old 67 year old man.-1 points
