  1. Hello all, I was fortunate to get my hands on a 1dx mark II a few weeks ago, along with an underwater housing for it. Did a last minute trip to the Philippines to test this out. It is a short video, and I did a mix of macro and wide angle. I used the 100mm F2.8L and some shots with a +10 diopter on it. For wide angle I used the 16-35mm F4L. Make sure to choose 4k on the playback options. I severely underestimated what the move to 4k was going to bring. The amount of resources both from a speed and storage standpoint is massive. After 40 dives, I came back with about 3.5TB worth of data. Almost all of these shots were shot 4k and 60p, played back at 30p. Let me know what you think! Enjoy, Dustin Or Vimeo

  2. Here's some quick shots I took yesterday with the GX85 and SLR Magic 10 T2.1 + vari ND. It's nothing special really but that BIS is awesome! All handheld with no stabilization in post. Natural picture profile -2-5-5-2. Graded in FCPX and Color Finale. I also uploaded the ungraded version, link in youtube description.

  4. @Andrew Reid Re: I wouldn't replace my GX80 with the XC10 and lose the use of interchangeable lenses, etc. You have piqued my curiosity: Will there be a GX80/85 with Black Magic Video Assist 4K Pro Res vs internal 4K vs the XC10 C-Log 4K video comparison? Thanks! Mark

  5. It allows you to get a shot you wouldn't otherwise get, at a speed you wouldn't otherwise be able to operate at. In certain types of filmmaking (documentary, run & gun, mood pieces, street scenes, real life scenes) that is invaluable. I'm not saying you should stop carrying other cameras and just get one, either. I wouldn't replace my GX80 with the XC10 and lose the use of interchangeable lenses, etc. However the XC10 hardly compromises on the image at 305Mbit 4:2:2 vs 100Mbit 4:2:0 or the dynamic range (Canon LOG vs no LOG)

  6. The Canon XC10 is underrated on paper, not least by me! Having very little interest in one I decided anyway to give it a try. Glad I did. Read the blog post

  7. Yes that's just stills. The XC10 is a video camera that allows you to take 4K JPEGS as an extra. It's not strictly speaking a hybrid like the RX10. This is a video site, so stills aren't really the focus. If you like to take stills too, maybe this will affect your decision. I sold an RX100 ii to buy an XC10 and and very glad I did. It's so much easier to use and the results just work, no hours of fixing colour in post.

  8. Sharpness: digitally applied Resolution: number of megapixels on the sensor Final image: a combination of sensor readout, image processing, compression, noise and all sorts of things - and yes digital sharpening in-camera or in-post People need to start noticing when an image has been sharpened so they don't mistake this for better resolution. Because it is preferable NOT to have it done in-camera.

  9. Thanks... I'm a better writer than a cinematographer... and yes... go for it... I appreciate that you asked.

  10. I think the Canon XC10 has quite soft 4k video. Here is comparison charts for 4k sharpness (Sony RX10 II vs Canon XC10 from Slashcam. https://www.slashcam.de/artikel/Test/Canon-XC10---geschrumpfte-C300---Sonstiges---Aus-dem-Messlabor.html#Aus_d CANON SONY

  12. But the price of 2000 USD ! add another 500 and you have a7sii, or two a6300 / gh4. i don't know man, the video must have been miles ahead of others to even consider paying 2000 for non constant aperture, no raw photos hybrid one lens camera :| anyway, will you add video too Andrew ?

  13. I thought you would use the same shutter speed as your desired output? So if you're shooting 60p for slow motion on a 24p timeline, you would use 1/50th shutter speed?

  14. No comparison images or videos? I always knew the canon was better because of the image it put out not its specs. The only thing that sours me to it is the lack of super wide angle option. If you need another camera to do that then theres no reason to use that camera to do what the XC10 does as well.

  15. I had the Sony RX10 II and thought it was terrible as a video camera - so I can relate to your feelings of the RX10 III. A completely frustrating and soulless experience. XC10 - I'm curious about a 2nd version. If they just made that lens 2.8 all the way through.....

  16. Thank you! I found some other 4k clips in the footage thread, and indeed editing 4k isn't a problem for the Mini, at least for simple stuff.

    New Canon 1DX Mkii Footage

Over the Memorial Day weekend we decided to pop over the San Francisco. I figured it would be a good opportunity to have a little fun with the 1DX MkII. We are still getting use to the camera but so far really like it. The batteries last a long time. I would generally get between 1-2 days out of each. I was also testing out a Zacuto Marauda... It helps but I definitely need practice to master it. I might end up returning the Zacuto and going with the Rhino Rig, which I expect to have in hand next week. I think the Rhino Rig should be more stable and can break down pretty small also. FYI: I also had a chance to stop by Sammys Camera and check out the Canon 11-24mm... It's an impressive piece of glass. I will have some test shots with that bad boy later on. I forget the exact settings, but I know in a few of the shots I was pushing the ISO in excess of 8,000 and it seemed to hold up pretty well. I know that some of you dislike the new color profile, but I personally love it. I did load some flat picture styles onto the camera, but don't think I used them in these clips. Sorry for the clipping of the audio, I just wanted to throw this up so you could all see what it looks like in the hands of a non-pro. Canon_1DX_MkII_-_San_Francisco.mov

  19. thanks a lot for the detailed explanation. i really enjoyed reading through it! I guess you have to rethink this. the camera doesn't actually encode 120 frames per second. it encodes 30 frames (my tests showed it's probably 25 frames) in one second of realtime. once it finished (or more probably also while) recording it tells the container that this, say 1000 frames, should be played back at 120f/s. which makes it basically really fast -> timelapse. camera didn't have to do any more work than in 30p. btw take a look at http://***URL removed***/forums/post/57866447 for framerate/resolution/slot tests and sample files

  21. This 1DC is sweet.I just had a day of hating CLOG until I found a LUT that works properly. This is over exposed by about a stop and then brought down in post before the lut. The FF 1080P file sharpen nicely too.

  22. You're approaching this the wrong way. It doesn't matter what product or what media. The question is, "what are you really selling?". BMW doesn't sell cars - they sell status and they sell based on the consumer belief that owning a BMW will make everyone think they're wealthy, classy, demanding only the best, and so on. Tires are a practical item that most everyone needs, or they're a desirable performance item for a niche market. They're expensive ($700 next week for my vehicle, damn it!) and a hassle to purchase and take care of. They're something you forget how much you rely on until you have a problem with them. They can be the difference between life and death. The fact you've said nothing about the business - what's their market position, who is their market, why should a consumer choose them over the competition - makes me think you're approaching this as a creative project and not a marketing project. That's great, but you need to deliver a product that meets the business goals of the owner. Do they want attention, do they want to seem cooler, do they want their market to realize something about them that isn't apparent (better price, good service, fastest installation)? A tire shop ad can range from the owner in his terrible suit shouting "CHEAPEST TIRES IN TOWN" with bad interlaced footage of the shop, up to the very best commercials from Michelin or Pirelli and so on. But this guy is a dealer, not a manufacturer - straight-out marketing suggests you get across the reasons a consumer should consider them over their car dealer or a big chain store (could be done with humor or action or any of a dozen directions). I'd resist the knee-jerk reaction to sell tires - Michelin sells tires - what does a local business actually sell to their market? A market that's about to purchase tires and deciding where to go for pricing and service? This can still be creative as hell, it can be viral, etc. But you probably don't need to sell the product itself. Remember the ad for some local gym? A buff girl is walking around in her panties and approaches a bowl of nuts. She sticks a nut between her butt cheeks and we hear a CRACK - the's so tough, she can shell nuts with her ass. The camera pans to her gym bag, which has the logo of the gym on it. Not a single word spoken. That's pretty damn creative, legitimately funny (and went viral and was shared, like, 10 million times). They didn't talk about their pricing or classes or schedule or locations, but got massive attention. One actress in one location, too. Step back and think about the market and what the business wants to achieve.

  23. I think its easier if they managed to get 1080p and 2160p MJPEG instead

  25. You need to test the high bitrate hack! Fabulous!
    1 point
  26. I didn't ignore it at all. Monitoring the hack process, opened a dedicated forum for it, took my NX1 to London in February and used it at BVE, shot with the SLR Magic PL anamorphics on the NX1 in Brighton and did a big blog post about it. The NX1 is as good in 2016 as it was in November 2014 and it will remain so for the next 2 years as well. Absolutely fantastic future proof camera. The 120fps looks improved from the first firmware in 2014. Quality looks similar to the X Pro 2. Not free of moire but nice and detailed.

  27. The bitrate hack improved the image from NX1 even further. Now I do 180mbit in 4k and FHD@100fps, while for FHD@120 I go down to 100mbit, which is anyway an improvement compared to the original 80mb. The worst part of NX1 is high ISO in video, and I can't understand why, since for raw still images, they are detailed and clean up to 3200 (and up to 6400 when downscaled in postprocessing to match 4k). Possibly a combination of poor downscaling (since video is from full sensor readout) and NR.

  30. Easy choice. I did it already and bought 1DX mark II. I use Technicolor Cinestyle profile in the 1DX2 and it works just fine. Check my other post about those. Cinestyle flat cat frame is attached. Some Cinestyle testing:

  31. They have been using it for quite some time with great results. Definetelly shows a segment where the camera is great. This is mainly a "film maker" forum. But we sometimes seem to forget that not everyone of Panasony and Canikons customers are. Some are videomakers like Jared and some are still photographers, again like Jarred. Thats why I sometimes have an issue with the "only an idiot would..", "thats crap because..." and "why does Canon..." type of attitude on every single product that doesnt also serve as a perfect tool for shooting a narrative movie.
