Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
graphicnatured and 2 others reacted to Jim Giberti for a topic
I don't think that it's crazy. What would be crazy, I think, would be to release less than optimal footage for everyone to squabble over while the sensor is possibly still being tweaked. Their cameras improve and evolve with each product and firmware release, so there's no reason to expect anything different with a camera they've been developing for so long. Obviously the countless people that pre-ordered within hours are confident that this will be the next gen, small camera that they've been anticipating. But of course it makes sense for anyone, who wants to see footage, to wait until the camera is out in the field and being shot, tested and reviewed, as most people do. Personally, I had no issue pre-ordering a pair at the end of the press event, without seeing advance footage.3 points -

This is probably a bit low brow on populist for most of you but anyway.... So I went to see Jurassic World in 4DX the other night. Not a great film but definitely a great experience. I don't really know what I was expecting, maybe just a bit of motion rumbling in the seat and a few gimmicks of the odd tiny blast of air and a bit of water but it was way beyond that. Of course, its not going to work with every film type but with something like Jurassic World you've already left any pretence of high brow at the door anyway so if you're going to go for it then you might as well really go for it. The range of movement in the chair was way beyond what I was expecting both in distance and velocity which made every crash or shock point really shake you but I was also surprised at the subtlety that really put you inside the aerial shots and also when the camera was tilting up to reveal something. The air jets coming from the front were obviously good for weather stuff but the ones in the head rest were very effective for bullet fly bys but the big surprise where the ones behind your calfs which they used to simulate little creatures running around your ankles. And honestly, the rain effects with the water spray were fantastic ! As an old cynic, I shouldn't really be getting excited by this stuff but I had an absolute whale of a time as did everyone else in there. Its a long time since I've left the cinema and people have seemed as euphoric as that. And that is with what is a decidedly iffy film as well. Also, as I've said before on here, we really all did give up on 3D too soon. I would love for Spielberg to do a version of Saving Private Ryan for 4DX as it would lend itself very well to the inclusive immersion aspects. Flame away2 points -
Fuji X-H1. IBIS, Phase Detect 4K beast?
Trek of Joy and one other reacted to frontfocus for a topic
Autofocus with the new firmware is faster in general. The Dynamic Range bug seems to be fixed, so DR200, DR400 and Flog work very well with video, just like the DR200 recording. If the transition is smooth, depends a lot on the lens and the settings as well as subject distance/distance difference. With the old and slow f/1.2 and huge subject separation I found that settings for af speed +1 to +5 track very well, as in the video, but if you want to pull focus with the touch screen, it feels like it does it in two steps if the subject is far away. With near subjects it does well. With other lenses, especially wide angles, it's not as prominent. With different settings, like af speed -2 it does a very smooth focus transition, but it does it slowly. Also watch out to stay in the inner phase detection area, if you use the outer points, it does contrast detection with is neither fast, nor does it track well nor does it do smooth transitions. Touch function in video has also been changed. If you are in manual focus and the magnification, it camera doesn't start recording if you hit the touch screen. With AF lenses it does instant AF, to start the recording via touch screen, you have to leave the magnification. Auto ISO in video has been improved too. It's no longer 1/3 stop steps, but feels extremely smooth. 1/10 stops steps at least. That's just what I noticed in the first few minutes, there probably are a few more small changes. Overall it's a very nice update. edit: I now watched the video from Zed Pro Media. If the tracking sensitivity and af speed are set right, the 56mm tracks very well, as he shows. I can't say anything about the canon adapters, since I don't own any. The smooth Auto iso I can confirm.2 points -

Canon "Fullframe" Mirrorless

http://www.canonrumors.com/video-capabilities-will-be-at-the-heart-of-all-future-canon-prosumer-camera-bodies-cr2/ Soooo........ "perceived" feature set? Does that mean we'll finally get proper full HD out of a Canon stills camera? Only for them to then dress it up (or rather up scale it) and call it "4K"! ha ?1 point -

Yes you can. Im using A6300 with Andycine A6 and all of the resolution modes works perfectly. But the camera only sending the GUI over the HDMI in the 1080p modes. 4K is clean, so you cannot see your settings on the monitor.1 point -
I wasn't being entirely serious, of course. But yes, I have seen various ones that can move without looking like they've had an accident. Surely our problems would be solved by them being exactly like us but without our problems. Which is exactly what my wife says about me by the way They can analyse data that builds a model of what it is we like about something though, which is all that pleasure from a certain aesthetic translates to. Give anyone/anything enough data and enough time and they could transform what we'd currently call "je ne s'ais quoi" into "Not only do I know exactly what that certain what is Monsieur but here its is as a preset for your Panasonic BrainInterface20000 camera". Its no different to current practices of EXIF mining and cross checking it with Likes/Retweets on social media to find out what sort of image capture components drive the most interest and affection. It may be cruder now but its the same principle that given enough processing power and time can be extrapolated out to a more granular level that will provide a fair idea of what sort of images ping the pleasure sensors of most people. The Lytro got a lot of hate - much of it justified - but if you ever played with one for a little while then the glimpse was there of where we'll end up going. Take that concept on two or three generations (which may or may not happen now Google own it) and with enough data mined about what works then I can easily envisage a camera system that slaps an instant and satisfying enough auto-aestethetic on it complete with not only colour and dynamic range adjustments but focus point, depth of field and re-composition as well. And then they'll cripple it by putting a slow lens on it and no microphone input obviously.1 point

Actually, there are lots of excellent robotic solutions to the problem of mobility. This from 2006 (or earlier): Which evolved into a prototype that could wrap around things and then climb vertically, and then also evolved to have multiple legs etc. https://techcrunch.com/2017/07/06/how-carnegie-mellons-snake-robot-became-the-multi-legged-snake-monster/ this from 2010 - a robot that balances on a ball: and other approaches too: http://www.sciencemag.org/news/2016/01/new-space-robot-would-hop-not-drive-across-other-worlds but this is the problem - we don't want robots to solve our problems, we want them to be like us, to be familiar. Which is why it's difficult to program them to do human things, like simulate a larger aperture in recorded video from multiple cameras, which is optimising an aesthetic experience that they never have and won't ever have unless we program them to have it.1 point

I forgot to mention that it does scent release as well. So, yeah, if you want fart jokes then they can do a very decent dinosaur one complete with wind, movement and smell ! It was the same price as the usual IMAX 3D ticket. They make double the money on the drinks and snacks though as most of your initial purchases end up all over you the first time the seat lurches while you're slurping your coke and munching your popcorn !1 point -
Just shoot 4K RAW on the H6D-100C. Completely silent, very wide, large sensor for a nice cinematic look, and 8MP RAW stills are fine.1 point

Wonder how well the a7Smk2 itself sold. I know of filmmakers who picked the a7Rmk2 over the a7Smk2 But none of them ever picked the a7Rmk1 over the a7Smk1! However the a7Rmk2 caught up with the a7S series for video (give or take a bit, in some ways it was a bit better, in a few ways a bit worse), and of course for stills the a7R line up is way way ahead.1 point -
Is anyone seriously using their smartphone for video?
webrunner5 reacted to kye for a topic
You're right about thinking at a human level. Robots building robots is definitely going to be a thing, and just like any other exponential process it's going to take far more time making basically zero progress than we think, and then bang - out of nowhere it will take off. Another problem is that robots are so different that getting smarter doesn't mean anything to us if they get smart in ways we don't appreciate or like. You might have heard about the Facebook AI robots inventing their own language. They did that because the programmers didn't incentivise them to speak proper English, so they went off the reservation. That is a pretty straight-forward example, but what separates computers inventing their own shorthand (which we don't like) and teenagers doing the same thing (which is inherently human), let alone how we would respond to an AI that made no sense because it was speaking to teenagers! There's a great quote from the snopes article about that language thing: Link: https://www.snopes.com/fact-check/facebook-ai-developed-own-language/ It's an interesting article talking about lots of general stuff to do with AI etc, but the quote is interesting because we have stupidly high standards about doing things that are useful to humans. In a sense, if AIs were training humans they might say something like: I don't understand these humans, they can't accurately remember a f*cking thing, can't even add a thousand numbers a second (which any $0.02 chip can do!), but they manage to self-repair, resist rust, and develop virus counter-measures without even trying!! They will be capable of amazing things, but if you ask a robot to help enhance the photographs you took you're more likely to get back an image that has been optimised so that every n-th pixel has its colour values rounded to the n-th prime number, or simply made to be all black because it's easier to store. The idea they would simulate a wider aperture in an optical system in a 3D environment is far more alien to them than the other examples I mention because they don't have these things, or if they did, then they'd optimise them to have a deep depth-of-field because that's better for object recognition algorithms and accurate recording and cataloging of the world is more valuable than walking around half-blind or recording huge amounts of data to then throw away a lot of it afterwards.1 point -

Anyone Recommend a Variable ND Filter
kye reacted to Jim Giberti for a topic
It comes down to what you perceive as acceptable/ beneficial. There is no universal arbiter of this stuff - just opinions. With that in mind, a number of the more accomplished shooters here abouts regularly have VNDs on their lenses. VNDs are professional in the sense that professionals shoot with them all the time. In the most important sense of getting a great shot versus not getting it - they're invaluable for a number of situations. Example: I'm producing a commericial next weekend at a dairy for a new product launch. Because it will be very sunny, buggy, live critters and real time action for much of the B-roll. In this scenario changing lenses becomes problematic so I'll have two cameras with zooms. Having VNDs on them means I know that both FL and ideal exposure can be dialed in on the fly. In a situation like this it's hard to calculate how many more solid shots that will come from it - but a lot more than primes and fixed NDs. When we go back the next day for the setups w/ actors I'll use fixed ProNDs on the cameras because of the control. That said, shot well, there isn't anyone who'll view the work, broadcast or web, that will see the difference between the two.1 point -

Personally, I am against anything that is a roadblock for me to make a film. Technology advances and in the not so distant future, all audio, at our level, will be captured in camera and it will be more than good enough for the intended outlet. I don’t understand why anybody who champions the DSLR/Digital Revolution would be against technological improvements in audio, color, editing, cinematography, etc... but in the end it doesn’t matter... technology moves forward and resistance is futile. Obviously, I would love to have a full sound crew, it would be one less thing for me to worry about. But you can’t always get what you want, so you deal with what you have. So, if these presets help to clean up some dicey audio... bring it on.1 point

I believe the people in "these forums" are exactly the ones that will find them helpful. At least these are in the right direction and people with no sound experience at all, can improve their sound. I am a professional soundman for 19 years, and I know that my experience, education and expertise can't be simulated on a few presets, but there is a huge percentage of video makers outhere -amateurs, one man bands, photogrpahers turn to video, cameramen not willing to hire a sound man, ultra low budget productions - that could be benefited for those presets. There is an increasing attitude in this and other forums, that even camera's internal mics are sufficient for sound, at least now they have a few presets to back up their claims! For the price, I see a lot of people invested on them.1 point

Liliput A5, or any other cheap 5" or smaller competitors?
webrunner5 reacted to IronFilm for a topic
I'm Jewish, does that count? And my grandparents met while living in Scotland! So maybe. Anyway, monitors last for years but also tech advances pretty quick. Would suck to buy a SmallHD 502 only for a Samauri V to be announced the next day. Additionally, why spend money I don't have to? When I can put it instead towards something more important: sound gear. Finally, if I'm working on the camera side of things I'd often be working on very low budget shoots so I'd rather not bring expensive gear to the set anyway! Having cheap gear is nice sometimes, I could for instance do a long term loan of my Feelworld FW759 to a DoP for a feature film and not have any worries over it because it is so cheap anyway if the worst was to happen. (It didn't, I got it returned just the other week at the wrap party)1 point -

This is what Grant Petty had to say when they acquired DaVinci in 2009. "When we were doing the due diligence on DaVinci, I saw a $50,000 price in the price list if you bought a secondhand system, and now wanted to be supported by DaVinci. And not only that, you're paying upward of $80,000 a year for support contract after that." That was just the service charge price you paid to get it checked out if you bought a second hand one. At that time he was talking about getting the purchase price of the high end systems down from $850K to $500K At $1299, I'd say its the camera you are getting for free and not the software.1 point

Would You Perhaps Be Interested In A Different GX80/85 Colour Profile???
Mark Romero 2 reacted to BTM_Pix for a topic
OK So for anyone wanting to try this, I have made a really simple method to do it. I have tested this numerous times on my GX80 and it has lived to tell the tale but obviously do this at your own risk. All that this process does is fool the camera into thinking its talking to the smartphone app and then the commands it sends are exactly what the smartphone app sends. Or would do if the smartphone app thought it was talking to a camera equipped with Cinelike D ! So as such it is only getting sent what the Panasonic app would be sending to it so there are no hacky or sneaky debug things getting sent to it. Again, though, proceed at your own risk. Although I would say, if you’ve tried that region switching hack on YouTube with the 10 million key press combos during power up then you’re already brave enough to try this! Bear in mind that my unit is a GX80 and the firmware is version 1.0 If you have a GX85 or have got a different firmware then I just don’t know because obviously I haven’t got any other devices to test it on. Here we go then…. Follow these instructions exactly and you should have Cinelike D on your GX80/85 You will need a laptop or a phone with a browser, the camera and to download the simple html file attached. 1) Switch on camera and turn on wifi as though you were connecting the app and you should see the waiting screen on the camera 2) Load the Deploy Cinelike D.html file into your browser 3) Select ‘Handshake’ 4) You should see the browser page change and it confirm that its connected to a GX80 5) Hit the back key on the browser 6) Select ‘Connect’ 7) You should see the browser page change to say ‘ok’ and the camera give you an ‘Under Remote Control’ message 8) Wait until the camera screen shows you a live view 9) Hit the back key on the browser 10) Select ‘Deploy’ 11) You should see the browser page change to say ‘ok’ and the camera should NOT now be displaying the Photo Style you had selected (i.e. Standard, Vivid etc) 12) Cinelike D is now active on the camera 13) If you go into the menu on the camera and select Photo Style you will see that it is blank and you can’t navigate to other Photo Styles such as Standard etc. 14) To restore the Photo Styles hit the back button on the browser and select ‘Restore’ and the camera will display the Standard photo style and you should then be able to go into Photo Styles and change them. 15) Repeat 9-14 to switch between them to your hearts content! So, like other settings, the Cinelike D profile will persist when you switch the camera off so if you want to use the other Photo Styles again then you MUST go this process again to re-enable them. However, if you would like to switch between them without using this method again (and who wouldn’t) here is a neat way round it. When you’ve done Step 12 and got Cinelike D on, set all your other parameters (4K24p etc) as you’d like them and save these into C1 of the custom settings. Then go to Step 14 and use the ‘Restore’ to get your standard Photo Styles back, set all your other parameters (4K24p etc) as you’d like them and then save these into C2 of the custom settings. Now when you switch the camera on, you simply choose C1 to have Cinelike D or C2 for the standard Photo Styles and forget about using any nonsense about using browsers and wifi connections! In couple of weeks I’m hoping to show you how you can do stuff like this and some other useful bits and pieces from a little hardware gadget that will work on the Panasonic cameras but have fun with this in the meantime. DEPLOY CINELIKE D.html1 point
