The XPS 9570 still suffers from CPU and GPU throttling when run hard (like my 9560) but as it has Thunderbolt it can use an external GPU. These slim laptops are just not designed to deal with the thermal stress of sustained high CPU and GPU rates but if you can offload this work to an external box it may solve it. I have a 4 disk RAID0 on my 9560 via Thunderbolt which gives me 500 mbps data rates but the Thunderbolt chip side of the laptop gets very hot. If you have a big raid storage box and eGPU + laptop you have to ask yourself why are you not using a small desktop ( micro ATX form factor) PC and a Screen......3 points

Macbook Pro or Surface Book 2 for 4k editing?
Robert Collins and one other reacted to Don Kotlos for a topic
The eGPU is still a mess on the mac side even though Apple has started to support it officially. While the MacOS changes have made it easy to plug an AMD eGPU, FCPX updates have actually made the performance worse. Fortunately, there are still ways to use an NVIDIA eGPU on the mac, but it requires custom scripts (not that hard), and mainly using Resolve or Premiere. The new Blackmagic eGPU is a waste of money. I would strongly advise anyone against it since it is $700 for an old non-upgradable chip. If you want to go the eGPU route, get an enclosure and a GPU that you can upgrade. It will be cheaper & faster. I don't understand why they didn't use the Vega chip or even better 2 Vega chips. I think the main factor to decide on the computer is if you want to use FCPX or Resolve. Both have strong points and it is up to each user to decide. If you go with Resolve then there are laptops with better dGPUs (Razer Blade one example) and you can use an eGPU much easier. In few weeks I will have my hands on the new macbook 15 and I will do some tests with the eGPU.2 points -
Any Sony A7 II users here - how bad is it really?
heart0less and one other reacted to jase for a topic
Please dont take this offensive, but why I am in love with a particular lens is not the subject of this topic. This topic is solely about whether the A7 II is really as bad as people tell. The result is that I will test this by myself :)2 points -
Spin camera 360 to follow a kickflip

I think it was more the idea that he did it handheld in a line that made it cool. Vx looks awesome. I can't tell if this was done in post or not, definitely done way before the Colin Reed video though.2 points -
Depends entirely on the kind of work you do. If it is fast paced, quick turn around, limited/no post, then a C100 can be a good choice. However the C100mk2 sells at a hefty premium over the C100mk1, and what do you really gain? Not much, most notably 1080 60fps. If you don't need that, then go for a C100mk1 DPAF instead (or even an older C100 without DPAF if you don't need and won't to get a real bargain bargain). And is worthwhile checking the "superior" Sony PMW-F3 and Sony FS700 which sell for even cheaper prices. And depending on your line of work you do, is worthwhile keeping an eye out for a C300mk1 or C500, which sell for a massive discount over their original prices.2 points

New Video! - Pro Color V3 on the A7iii
Drew Allegre reacted to julienajarry for a topic
Hey all, jumping right in here on the forums to share my work shot using Pro Color! I've come from the Canon world but now love my Sonys. Pro Color was a God-sent and I am fully embracing it! More to come but in the meantime please see this short video of a buddy of mine fishing shot handheld on the new Sony A7iii using a Nikkor 35mm f1.4 ai-s and 105mm f2.5 ai-s. V3 Pro Color was installed on the camera as at the time of filming V4 was not yet out. I applied a Lut of mine, Tenkara, you can grab from my website. Thanks Andrew for making these killer profiles!1 point -
Pro SENNHEISER shoot shot using PRO COLOR V3
jonpais reacted to julienajarry for a topic
Hey all! I want to share this trailer for Sennheiser's Pro Talk Season 2 I shot using a Sony FS7, A7iii and A7sii. Two weeks before the shoot I decided I wasn't happy with my current slog3 workflow and wanted to change it up. I found Pro Color V3 (at the time, V4 was not out yet) and gave it a shot. I loaded it up on the A7sii and A7iii, barely made a few tweaks to both to match them up, give me a great result and bam. I was sold. I then created a preset in FCPX (yea I edit on FCPX for now) that took my FS7 slog3 footage and popped it into Pro Color V3 matching the other two cameras perfectly. So my new flow is like this, Pro Color on the A7 series cameras and the FS7 shoots slog3, I then match the FS7 to the A7 series cameras in post and work from there. The reason why I needed Pro Color in my life was because I had these beautiful little A7 series cameras but couldn't use them to their full (small) potential shooting slog3. I didn't want to have to tote around an external monitor, etc. There's a lot more to say but I'll leave it at that. Way more to come. Enjoy.1 point -

I just unboxed it. I LOVE HOW SMALL AND CUTE IT IS! Just what I imagined. No more bulky 7" camera monitor life for me!1 point

Mine has arrived! But strangely, I won't be using it on tomorrow's shoot. As I'll be DoP, and instead the privilege of using the new F8n will go to a newbie n00b soundie who I'm lending my kit to so she can handle the sound on my shoot :-o Fingers crossed Serial #39, the first and only one in all of New Zealand!1 point

Spin camera 360 to follow a kickflip

I have seen similar shots in camera with just a handheld move, just spin the camera on your arm. Not as great as the Lakai video offcourse, which is indeed a phantom camera with a bolt probably.1 point -
Spin camera 360 to follow a kickflip
BenEricson reacted to JurijTurnsek for a topic
If you ever done a trick on a skateboard, timing is everything. A single flatground trick lasts less that a second and the duration of the clip. The degraded IQ (zoomed in?) and Ty Evans' general affliction of all new gear, I would imagine he used a Phantom camera. Spinning that beast with exactly the same speed as the skateboard, triggering the spin at the exact same moment (we are talking miliseconds here), while nailing the manual focus seems highly improbably. There is the 1% chance it was done this way, just because a professional skateboarder would be able to a few hundred takes with such a basic trick if needed.1 point -
C100 Mark ii in 2018
IronFilm reacted to zerocool22 for a topic
Nobody did.. was an original c100 reference. Shooting 12stops 1080p 8bit in 2018 is not really what I would call an awesome camera though(try 6 years ago).1 point -
I love my C100mk2, I wouldn't give it up unless I was getting a C200 or C300mk2. If you shoot solo or very small crew, having dependable AF is life changing. The audio sounds pretty darn good as well, and having both a decent screen and decent EVF that swivels makes life easier when working outside or in. Files look great out of the box so it's great for fast turnaround stuff, and C-Log grades pretty well considering the gimped codec, which actually turns out to be a blessing because a 128gb card lasts all day, and it shoots backup to a second slot. A lot of the time I go out with the camera with 2 x 128gb and 2 x batteries and I can shoot all day without worrying about downloading or data management. I can complain all day about Canon, but the one thing they got right with the C series cameras is that it gets out of the way and lets you get on with shooting. That said, I have fairly specific requirements. If you work with a larger crew, or if you're not working on paid jobs, there are probably better options. I shoot Fuji for stills so I have an X-T2 which goes on the gimbal, but a GH5s is certainly an excellent option that I would consider as a gimbal cam if I needed it. If I'm going to be on me feet all day I tend to hire an EasyRig (excellent combo with the C100mk2) but you're not exactly discreet -- so if discretion is required you definitely don't want a C100.1 point

Articles without summarizing video's are annoying!
webrunner5 reacted to eoslover for a topic
This is the global trend, whether you like it or not If you dont like it, just unsub from the website and go for the text based ones There are also some amazing youtubers or reviewers out there like Max Yurvey / Christopher Frost , unfortunately Max no longer makes a lot of videos because youtube screwing him. Just pick the things that work for you, we should be happy we got free information (+minor ads) from the internet.1 point -
C100 Mark ii in 2018
BenEricson reacted to BrooklynDan for a topic
I heart my C100 mk 1. Still the most cinematic image you can get for the money. Dslrs and Mirrorless cameras just don't have the same level of richness and depth to the colors.1 point -
As a Fstoppers staff writer, I can give the reason behind this policy: it would be unfair for the video creator to summarize the video. Basically we would steal his/her work and content without benefits for him/her. This type of article is called a "repost." If the video is interesting, we make a short introduction and the reader is free to watch the video. Otherwise, people would simply read the summary and skip the video while the website pockets the ads money and there is nothing left for the video creator (views and/or ads money).1 point

C100mkii is my favorite video camera of all time. Easily the best ergonomics of such a camera, better than the C200 in my opinion. I could see only 2 possible limitations. No slow motion (what a pity not to have 100/120f), and no 4K, which in 2018 can be a factor for some. Still the best option for 80% of what I do.1 point

I bought a C100 mark 1 in 2018 so +1 from me too... but it obviously depends on what your needs are. for a $2K budget it's imo the best cine cam. Not DSLR, not MILC. CINE camera. Super35 sensor. 1080p downsampled from 4K. Dual Pixel AF (with face tracking on Mk2). XLR inputs. internal NDs. Internal stereo boom mic. outstanding battery. Canon Log. Canon colors. Native Canon EF lenses. Waveform assist. Great ergonomics. Modularity...etc.1 point

I’m thinking about buying a Mark I, so yeah I think the Mark II is definitely still relevant. As John Brawley stated in a different thread... a lot of US network television is broadcasted at 720p... so 1080p is more than enough. The C100 series cameras are workhorses... I’m sure you’ll have the camera paid off after a job or two and then it’s all profit. And for that money... it’s a no brainer.1 point

Sony a7 III discussion
Drew Allegre reacted to Robert Collins for a topic
This is the exact set up I use on my A7riii - the big advantage is that it is super easy to switch from photo to video and back - it works really well for me. I have it setup so that C1 and C2 'are' in 'video mode'. One disadvantage, as pointed out by another poster on this thread, is that you 'cant' set a 'custom white balance' to work under C1 and C2. Gary Friedman's books on the A7x series are excellent (PDFs about US$30) - I always buy one when I get a new A7 version. They run to over 600 pages!! Although about 300 pages are filler - things like how to use flash with your A7x. They are incredibly comprehensive and a great reference document with good indexing.1 point -
Sony a7 III discussion
Drew Allegre reacted to wolf33d for a topic
Hello, I am getting the 7III soon. Shot with A7RII 2 years ago, cant remember what I used. I plan to set the Custom 1 dial to 4K30p with specific PP and settings, Custom 2 for HD120p with specific settings again, and using the regular priority aperture mode for photos. Therefore I would never be using the proper video mode. Few questions: - Is there an inconvenient with that? - I assume the Custom 1 and 2 on the dials are considered photo mode. Any disadvantage shooting videos in photo mode? (like different AF performance, ...) Am I loosing anything not using the regular video mode? If above is not good what do you recommend? For PP, AF settings and so on I am all set. Thanks1 point -
Time for a new laptop, any lightweight options?
tomastancredi reacted to Mat Mayer for a topic
This is an awesome idea. Found the PCSPECIALIST website and it seems ideal to build a laptop without having to actually put it together. Prices seem very reasonable to me on first glance. Unfortunately I probably left it too late, selling my MSI was a spur of the moment decision, so I need something someone has in stock nearby as I leave Tuesday. Might see if they can deliver Monday if I order tomorrow morning. Currently also looking at mini PC's, as I will be getting a monitor anyway and small ones can easily fit in luggage. Also the black HP Spectre x360, which is thin, fairly light and can be used in tablet mode, so it would replace all 3 of my devices (tablet, notebook and workstation laptop). I like to spend time looking so I get the best device and deal- will post the winner of best 4K portable computer when chosen. Might wait though because I checked Mac prices in Singapore and they are way cheaper than in the UK: for example £4,049.00 for the most expensive Mac Pro in UK and £3,409.57 in Singapore (approx 15% cheaper). Would rather steer clear of the c*nts at Apple though until I settle down and get an iMac. They leave people in the lurch all the time with their updates e.g. my spare monitor doesn't work with Macbook Air anymore and thousands have had the same problem for many years with no help from Apple. Microsoft make stupid decisions but I always find a way around them eventually. Edit: Found the perfect laptop: Dell XPS 15. 1TB SSD, 32GB RAM, 2GB 960M GPU, i7-6700HQ. Same screen size as my big MSI, but feels more like the size of a 13" Air. 4K touchscreen too.1 point
