  1. As someone less than politely pointed out on the other thread, I appear to have been a bit of a lazy arse in the almost 12 months since I tripped over and found the Cinelike d thing. You may recall it happened because I was researching making a hardware controller and after several iterations, here it finally is. And yes, it does look rather like a calculator doesn't it? The different iterations (including an Android app at one point!) have been in pursuit of making something small, standalone, self powered, fast connecting, push buttons and with an integrated screen at a lowish cost and, well, here we are. Here is the finished spec and features : Compatible with all Panasonic Lumix cameras that can be controlled by wifi Integrated USB rechargeable battery Full colour screen 20 keys with 3 bank switch keys giving 60 direct switch operations of functions Control of Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, White Balance, Colour Profile, Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness and Noise Reduction. Automatic unlocking of Cinelike D and Cinelike V on GX80/85, LX10/15 and TZ10 Control of manual focus in fine and coarse steps Control of One Shot AF Control of Record Stop/Start Store and Recall 8 focus points 4 selectable transition speeds between focus points Store and Recall 8 setup presets (each consisting of Aperture, ISO, Shutter Speed, White Balance, Colour Profile, Contrast, Saturation, Sharpness and Noise Reduction) Presets are stored in non-volatile memory so are available in any session. Boot time to camera connection and control under 2 seconds. Wifi control range tested to 20m. Optional accessories : Interface module to support Nintendo Nunchuck controller for manual focus control (native lenses and adapted lenses with smart adapters) and zoom (integrated lens cameras and power zoom lenses only) Wireless interface module to sync remote record and stop on supported Tascam, Zoom and SoundDevices audio recorders. The controller fits a regular cheap cellphone to threaded adapter holder so as well as being used handheld it can be mounted to anything you have a need for with the right attachment so could be on a cage or a gimbal or whatever. I'm going to be doing some more testing of it in anger in the next couple of weeks and I'll put up a video of it in action then. So, I have been a bit less lazy than first imagined By the by, the controller has both wifi and bluetooth so it begs the question would anyone be interested in a version of it for the Pocket 4K ??

I picked up a 35mm Mamiya f3.5 a few weeks ago and looking to get the 150mm or 210mm later this week when I'm in London. I have a Nikon adapter for them so then its a case of then putting them on the speebooster of choice to get them on the other systems. They are not as big physically as you'd imagine and they are a lot of lens for the money.

I would think a lot of the cheap as heck FF, MF lenses on ebay, Amazon, Craigslist have more character than new Cine lenses. And MF lenses have Big dials on them to change focus, aperture. I know that new to me, this old m42 Pentax 135mm, f 2.8 is about as sharp as you can get, and I paid like 4 dollars for it in reality. And I am like 20 feet away easy when I shot it. If there was a piece of micro film on the license plate you would have been able to read it! I can Always put a filter on it to soften it, sure can't make a lens sharper.

  5. Anything with a Intel Core i7-8750H and NVIDIA 1060 works fine. If Resolve is important get a laptop with a 1070 or even 1080 instead, 8GB of GPU memory are necessary. 16GB of system RAM is the bare minimum. If compositing is done in 4K, 32GB is the minimum RAM capacity. Many laptops nowadays have at least 1080p IPS screens with almost or even full sRGB coverage. Perfectly fine, even for grading after calibration.

  6. I've got no issue with lashing together a battery solution and there are enough CFast to SSD converter options out there now to sort that out fairly inexpensively. I'm going to swap pre-orders with a mate of mine where I have it for the first two weeks so I can test it with my controller and then hand it over and take his place in line to give me some pause to see how it shakes out but also what happens at Fotokina. I've obviously got a big investment in Nikon glass for work so I need to see what if anything they come up with in Cologne and how soon it will be available. I don't necessarily think its nailed on that they are going to have a load of issues but I'm way too far behind with all my other projects to get involved in the hand wringing and witch hunts about them if there are

Watch Sigma be the first mainstream camera manufacturer to offer Raw video in their still cameras...

Sigma CEO Kazuto Yamaki gives some of the best interviews. Really appreciate what his family has built and the values and quality they stand for. Very respectable brand. They have their own camera and system because they feel it's important for a lens manufacturer to see that things from that side of the interchangable lens system. Something to learn from rather than then to reap the fruits of and being a total ca$hcow. They're bound to do more interesting things in due course, I'm sure. Not sure though if that would or should be a video camera. But their lenses efforts are always impressive.

Wow I don't see how they could ever read all that data coming off the Sensor fast enough to have video, at least good video??

I think the interesting path left would be an established 3rd party lens company like Sigma, Tokina or Tamron doing anamorphics. The CEO of Sigma said they'd look at it if the demand was there after they launched their cine lenses. https://www.provideocoalition.com/sigma-may-develop-anamorphic-lenses/ The salient point being the if the demand was there part. Sigma could really be disruptive if they had a mind to. They filed a patent last year that seems to suggest they have a method of making a Foveon based video camera https://hi-lows-note.blog.so-net.ne.jp/2017-11-24 Going by my SD Quattro, they've got enough room on their SA mount to put an electronic variable ND in it (in point of fact there is enough room in there for a regular variable ND and a small child to operate it for you). They obviously know enough about all manufacturers lens mounts to build adapters to it as well. Add in their own anamorphics and with no internal consumer/professional segmentation to protect.... They could do some interesting stuff.

  11. Just a cheap one from Amazon does the job. I would buy a better one if you have lots of money LoL. But Can't need much more than I had supporting this 19x B4 lens with a 2x doubler. Never missed a beat. Not going to do it without rails though. It has rubber coated wheels on it so it is smooth. But they DO come unscrewed at times!! https://www.amazon.com/Neewer-Aluminum-Making-Baseplate-Camera,Mount/dp/B00VV6QCZE/ref=sr_1_15?ie=UTF8&qid=1531149381&sr=8-15&keywords=15mm+rod+lens+support

  14. This site has a lot of tests and hardware recommendations for Resolve and Premiere Pro. https://www.pugetsystems.com/ I used to have an i7 4790k and 960 graphics card PC as well as an A7riii but I use Premiere Pro so what I say may not apply to Resolve. I first upgraded to a 1080 GPU but didnt find it made much difference - in fact I cant really seem to get my 1080 to run much higher than 50% load. I then upgraded my processor to an 8 core 7820x and this added a lot of performance.

  15. Ah, I see what you were getting at now. Its the same deal in essence with a thunderbolt controller and graphics card but, yes, they are getting the smaller footprint from using the MXM module. You could argue that conceptually they've just chopped a smaller desktop case in half that has an external power supply The smaller footprint is useful if you are going to be moving about but without access to AC power it becomes a bit moot I suppose if you are looking at truly mobile editing.

  16. I don't blame you at all!! We are not sick of hearing from you. Me, and I bet a lot of people are sick of hearing from 2 people that we all know have shitted up this thread! All these Kinefinity fanatic's on here must have a case of the dumb shits. I am sick and tired of hearing it also. It Holds a F ing Sony E Mount lens, can you use the god damn thing, F No. It is just like the useless BMCC with the E mount. What they hell you do with a lens you can't control shit with it. You sell it on ebay that is what you do. Fly by wire lenses are as useless as Tits on a Boar Hog on a dumb adapter. Get over it. Now if you own a E mount Cine set of 50 grand lenses well hell you are set. Unless you live in China the Kinefinity is also as useless as those Tits on that Boar Hog. If you can't buy one or get it repaired close to where you live you are as crazy as your posts have been on here. And you are not even going to buy one anyhow. There are 12 dealers, other than in China, in the whole F ing world. Yeah I want one of those. I am sure with a few bugs worked out of it it will be a damn good contender. But it is not the second coming of Christ, and it can have 70 mounts, but if you can only pretty much hang a Native lens on it, and look at it, well so what. Take your Kinefinity bullshit on a Kinefinity thread. That way I don't have to read a God Damn thing about it as I will never open that thread! Quit doing it in a 4K BMPCC thread! Go the F away! Your just running off one of the smartest people on here that actually does this stuff for a living, You are just like Jon was doing. You cheap ass bastards are never going to buy one anyways. What makes a shit what it does.

  17. Australia’s home, but I used to travel to NZ frequently. It’s a beautiful country, the nature is incredible, would love to be there and be able to explore and shoot a little, very jealous of your remaining time. And so many good options for cameras in this price point, EVA1 certainly wins out for codec and slow mo. Like the ‘living photograph’ remark as well, can’t wait to do some traveling with the C200.

  18. Not as yet, there is a very informative thread here from @Don Kotlos that I'm going to re-visit. I'm hoping he can chime in and give us a steer on what the current best bang for the buck is. I probably should have got into this earlier as the price of graphics cards has gone ridiculous due to people hoovering them up for Bitcoin mining. I'm wondering whether something like this Gigabyte AORUS all in one solution might be the path of least resistance to get going for me. Seems a bit cheaper than a separate solution as well but I'm sure there are some caveats that @Don Kotlos can fill us in on. https://www.scan.co.uk/products/gigabyte-aorus-gtx-1070-gaming-box-thunderbolt-3-rgb-graphics-box

  20. Neither of those are good choices due to massive throttling of their GPUs. Get a portable gaming laptop. Reddit is a good non-biased source to use to find the right one.

  21. It will use Bluetooth LE to communicate with my controller so a smartphone app could equally be used. My personal view of that though is that its a bit of an overkill way to do it, especially considering the size and cost of the smartphone even though you might already have it. Using something like a small Bluetooth LE controller (a keyfob sized remote control similar to smartphone shutter release for example) is, to me at least, a better way to control it as the beauty of doing it that way is you don't have to fire up an app on the smartphone so its a bit more instant, not to mention tactile ? There'll be options for both though.

    Sony a7 III discussion

I try not to subscribe to political movements or social media prescribed causes created by political operatives to use the masses’ need to be heard on their 15 minute soapbox. It’s amazing how alone we are when we have the world at our fingertips. And these people of power exploit that loneliness and that need to be heard. So, for me, if a cause begins with a hashtag or ends with a gate... I shrug my shoulders and root for the pawns... But I digress... You’re right, this site is about tech and craft. For me it’s about learning from more talented people than myself on how to get a modicum of beauty in my images... but I’m just a hobbyist with narrative dreams. But like you once wrote, “art is politics” so in a community where relationships are forged by artists and craftsman, it is only natural for conversations to evolve from the passion of creation. So what is Jon Pais’ story? What is mine? Or yours? We all hide behind a moniker and an avatar as we anonymously hang our creative laundry for professionals and amateurs to critique. With every screengrab or video we share, we also share a vulnerability and unfortunately some people piss all over that. There are some nasty fuckers on this site. So I guess the question is... is Jon one of them... In the end, I don’t really care what some older American living abroad thinks. As I’m sure others don’t care what a 43 year old guy from South Jersey thinks but I must admit, as a storyteller, I do enjoy the drama. So carry on.

  23. It has 8 storable focus points and you can transition from any to any with 4 preset speeds. The stick can do both manual focus or can act as a transition controller between 2 stored points.

  24. Yes, we're probably due an update aren't we. I'm currently finishing porting the Sony version, which is more or less complete. The Panasonic version is functionally complete but the intention is for it to be multi-platform from the off at least for those two systems. The version for Blackmagic will obviously only happen when the camera is released (though I will begin porting it next) so it remains to be seen when that will be. The slave module integration for operating multiple cameras (even different brand ones) from one controller both individually and in a unison mode is also something that is currently being worked on. The slave module will be the small version as you can see here and will also be used to support the remote record start/stop of external audio recorders from Tascam, Zoom and SoundDevices but will also allow direct remote control of the camera through its more limited integrated buttons. With regard to the focus control, it will work on anything that the camera can drive focus on so not just native lenses but also via smart adapters from metabones etc. so, yes, if the camera can control your 4/3 lens then the controller can too. Bear in mind, it can only ever be as accurate as the adapter allows. If the lens has servo zoom then its not beyond the bounds of possibility to create a simultaneous zoom and focus function control but it would take quite a bit of calibration setup per lens to create individual profiles for them. As I don't have any servo zooms for MFT then this is unlikely to happen anytime soon ! As for manual zooming, well, there are a couple of possibilities that I have been thinking about specifically for that but, again, its down to lens access for calibration. Its doable though as I can track the focal length position and then make focus offsets as it changes so I'm not saying no but just not yet * * Which probably means I'll start doing it as soon as I get back

  26. Cine4 uses illegal values (0-255) and most programs do not recognize that correctly. Are you using the correct ranges? What color profile are you using? I have had a great experience with Cine/Pro modes with slight adjustments to the color depth. Also in the past, I had noticed differences in skin tones when contrast was adjusted between programs: By the way, like @Geoff CB I have also switched to Cine2 as well for most things
