Don't want to sound like a dick but what's with the picture covers on youtube? Everybody does the same thing. Funny face and the product smashed in front of it. Is there an agreement on this or just an established trend?

lol no offense taken. I understand. I’ve texted this myself and statistically I get higher click through rate when my face is on the thumbnail as well as when there is a more intense expression. It doesnt translate well here because the image is so large... but on a youtube home feed it can help make your video stand out.

It works.  I hate it and I refuse to click on baity videos, I can't stand it.

I'll have to check this mic out, sounds interesting.  I love my ride video micro, sounds so good for what it is.

Correct it works. I’m sorry you hate it. YouTube is filled with a bunch of adhd tweens who just click on the first shiny thing they see.

Nice idea. Was just about to buy a Rode Videomicro but this looks an even better option for 30€ more.

Ya it really is. It gives you a lot of extra flexibility for a marginal difference in price.

  2. I actually helped develop this mic over a year ago when I had a meeting with Andrew from Deity. I was sharing how I really hated how muffled audio sounded when talking behind camera for vlogs. I wanted a solution and they delivered. Not only does the mic have two mics on it... but you get an input that allows for a lav or other audio source to feed into your camera or recorder. The Rode Wireless GO is perfect for it and can clip right onto the Rycote mount.

Just wanted to share these vids with you guys. Jeven and I are the only people who have posted hands on reviews so far... IDK if we are the only ones who got them or what... but this $89 mic is well worth the $$ in my opinion.

Interesting that Dave makes so little relative to his channel size. My channel brought in close to $60k in straight ad revenue last year and I just broke 100,000 subscribers. I have a broadcast syndication agent, whom I’ve worked with for years (any viewers from the Ignition network in S. Africa here? Lol.) But I wouldn’t even consider one for brand deals.

Edit: looked at Kinotika’s (Dave’s) stats and it probably comes down to watch time. I had about 50,000,000 minutes of watch time in 2019. Based on his public numbers his channel watch time was probably a lot lower. (Reminder: subscribers are only one metric, and aren’t the only gauge of a channels reach.)

    ya exactly. watch time.

I'd take a wild guess and bet his agent has a few other guys on his books as well? So his costs are even lower

yup. my agent goes to square space and says: “i got 10 guys who all will work with you for $X” and then he splits that money up to all of us depending on our size

  4. i'm gonna upgrade to it from my em1 mkii for that joy stick lol. i love the camera. its just a good tool that i enjoy...especially for family photos and videos.

HOWEVER... i am SOOO dissapointed here. Was hoping to at least see 4k 60fps!!! idk whats going on. so stupid. nobody will buy this except olympus enthusiasts. it should really be called the EM1 mk2.5

If you didn't have an agent, how much do you think that would impact the brand deals you could land yourself?

    Wow, that is almost nothing!
(for a channel as good/big as yours that is)

ya if i didn’t have an agent by now i’d be looking for one. almost everyone has one at higher levels.

i share an agent with kai w, jarad poland, gerald undone, and jeven dovey for example.

I personally know people with over 2 million subs and they're definitely not rich or anywhere close to being rich.

There are a lot more variables at play. The type of content you make, who watches it, etc. plays a huge role. My friends that have hundreds of thousands of subscribers but deal with pro wrestling content don't get much at all since YouTube allowed advertisers more control over what videos they advertise on and most passed on advertising on wrestling related content.

absolutely. running a youtube channel isn’t about the channel itself. it’s about the other streams of income you make to pay for everything else. again... brand deals are where it’s at. i only make around $900 a month off ad revenue for example. the rest of my money is from all the other things like affiliate and brand deals

true or false: regardless of ones subscriber count, this is all predicated on ppl posting videos constantly, ever day or close to it

    yes?

    @DaveAltizer...?

it’s a combination of subs, views, comments, audience engagement that led to getting an agent who lands the brand deals. that’s the majority of my income. half of it is through sponsorships. the rest is all related to ad rev and affiliate

Trust me I'm no fan of RED the company but a phase-detect, global shutter, reasonably priced, compressed raw, non-proprietary storage, compact camera that with the metabones is FF equivalent? Yes please! Obviously it's early and we don't know the full story but this has me interested. And the EOS R could at least be a reasonable idea now... JK ? but I can't wait to see this on the RED.

    https://metabones.com/article/of/Introduces_Canon_EF_to_EOS_R_SpeedBooster

And for some reason it's the cheapest speed booster (at least compared to the popular EF-E and EF-MFT versions).

Ordered! Can't believe they did it! Incredible. .

  9. Shot with my Mavic Mini today. Really enjoy the thing. It’s so small it fits perfectly in my camera bag and it just turns on and goes with no fuss. Sure it’s not manual controls.... but locking the exposure before you make a move is good enough. I need to soften the image in post and maybe throw filmconvert on it or something to make it look less “video” but I think this is gonna stay in my bag way more than the original simply because the size.

  10. I see this thing as like the iPhone camera app in the sky. No raw, or crazy settings or bitrates....just a clean, easy to use product and something that I can keep in my bag all the time. I honestly will be using this more than I ever used my Mavic Pro. But I am in a weird position now only doing YouTube content instead of freelance work.

  11. Stoked to review the EM5 mkiii. Been using only the EM1 mkii with the new firmware the last few months and for the most part love it. I wish it had the button layout of a Canon 1DX or something...but other than that...I love the image I get out of it. The EM5 mkiii seems like basically a mini EM1mkii with minimal loss in ergonomics and battery life for a smaller and more compact size. I'll take it. Love it!
