in the GH4 days, i felt BMD had the better color science. Now with the EVA1 and GH5s, I think Panasonic has the edge. BMD always seemed to "suffer" from a bit of brown-muddiness under artificial light. and i feel I'm still seeing that in the current crop of cameras, although to a lesser extent. But I'll have a chance to do a side by side comparison between my EVA1 and a UMP in preparation for a feature I'm DPing. Looking forward to that.

I second that. Still a lot of IR pollution in the BMPCC 4K footage I’m seeing. The GH5S handles the colors better than the Blackmagic.....but that Blackmagic raw tho... that’s nice. All you need is a Hoya IR cut filter to fix the Blackmagic issue

hmm then I might get interested back in these series. Cine Alta Colors, high DR, full frame, decent 10 bit codec. Then these things will fly off the shelves.

ya. honestly, I would be interested in this also. a true "1DC replacement" type camera haha

Wow quite a few of you going.

    I'll try to make it

There is a nice old camera shop near Photokina in Cologne, good for scouting out c-mount bargains and maybe they'll get the first few Nikon Z7 bodies in Germany :) That haven't already been pre-ordered that is!!

Ooo what shop is it? I wanna check it out. Was thinking of taking a train down to the Leica factory too. This will be my first time to Germany. Super stoked to have some beer and pretzels

  4. I really hope this is true:

"One anonymous source told me the Sept 18 event will indeed give us the A7sIII with fully articulated screen and 4k60p."

If the Sony a7SIII truly had a flip out screen with 4k 60fps in 10bit....there would be a huge stir in the market and seems like a Sony thing to do. They have a history of crapping on their competition when things get competitive, and specs like this would crush Canon and Nikon.

Sony really has such a lead in the marked of FF Mirrorless and it seems as though the beast has been awakened. Not even a week ago Sony didn't plan on announcing anything at Photokina, and based on the excitement for Nikon and mostly Canon EOS R, it seems Sony has decided to pull the ultimate mic drop.

If there really is a fully articulating screen on the a7siii what does that mean about the body? Is it totally redesigned? Is it just an a9 frame with a flip out screen stapled onto it? Did they finally bite the bullet and pay a licensing fee to Canon for the flip out technology?

Sony seems to listen to their customers and 4k 60, 10bit, and flip out screen are literally the three most requested features they have had for their a7 lineup I'm sure. I know as a pro youtuber, if sony gave a fully articulating screen to the a7siii, they would dominate the market.

I sure hope these rumors are true.

  5. I know for me right now, Im having a hard time trying to figure out the balance of being true and honest, with also receiving demo units. Getting the demo units means I get early access to stuff to help me grow my audience more on YouTube. But when I receive early access products, they expect a good review. If I make a review that maybe would hurt the company, then they don't want to work with me anymore, therefore I don't get early access meaning I don't get to build the largest audience.

    It's a Catch-22 I am finding.

With that being said, you guys are going to love my Rudy Winston EOS R Spoof video.

  6. Some frames from a shoot I did this week. All shot on various Pro Color profiles (with some of my own tweaks here and there)

below are frames from two a7iii’s using a customized version of EOSHD ProColor V4 PP1.

And below is a6300 on the tight shot and a7sii on the wide. Both using EOSHD ProColor 3.0

All of these frames were color corrected to match, and I was extremely pleased with how easy they were to match one another. The client was very happy with the results.

Gotta work that YouTube-algorithm tho amirite? Believe there's thumbnail-etiquette, videos need to be regular and 10mins+, shouty titles with ALLCAPS, exclamation marks and clickbait... ?

That sounds more like the realm of expectation yeah... don't forget: no IBIS... no 10-bit, no 4K60p, no DPAF in 4K etc either.

Yup. YouTube is a game. Gotta play it right to win

that was my reaction too.  its a full time job

    Correct. It is ;)

The thing that excites me about this rumor is the fact that Panasonic UNDERSTANDS the video game really really well.

I think they were caught off guard with the Phase Detect AF for video thing. When they started designing the GH5 I don't think it was that much of a need or concern. Now, in 2018...its become quite a requirement and I know Panasonic knows that.

The other thing that excites me is the fact that it will most definitely have all the video features thrown in it that we expect it to have coming from a GH5. Waveforms, high bit rates, max frame rates...(however it may be less powerful than a GH5 cause the sensor is so much larger and requires some serious processing and cooling)

BUT MOST OF ALL....it WILL have a flip out screen and we all know it will. Hahahaha.

This is great news. And I am glad its later in the year....that gives me time to make a bunch of videos about the sony a7siii, canon mirrorless, and Nikon before it comes out. Its spaced out nicely for my channel ;)

  9. I formed my own opinion before reading the recent posts in this thread and my opinion based on the three videos Blackmagic has posted initially is that this thing does not deliver in the ways we all expect a Blackmagic camera to deliver.

Its not bad at all and if Sony put out a camera that looked this good we would all be over the moon.

But as a former BMCC 2.5k owner and BMPCC owner/ operator I can tell you flat out that this BMPCC 4K sensor is not looking as “Alexa like” as literally ALL of Blackmagics other cameras.

It has seemed since day one that the goal of Blackmagic cameras was to emulate Alexa as much as possible. I’m not seeing that with the bmpcc4k and I think that’s why everyone is so confused. It’s not what we expect.

It’s not bad, but it’s not what we expected.

I can’t wait to get my hands on one and do some of my own proper tests.

    Nice video sir.

How's compression in 10bit H.265? Are the lows blocky or do you just see a nice fine grain?

I need to do more extensive testing, but I feel like my old Phantom 4 Pro had a better image than the M2 Pro. BUT the M2 Pro is good enough to justify making it your primary drone.

There was noise in the image for sure from the compression. But when you  aren't pixel peeping and look at it from a distance it looks really rich and sharp.

Most vloggers shoot themselves in a medium close up... so where’s the need for reframing?

Idk, I think 8k or 16K could be the norm but you’re only getting so much from a 3-5” screen being held 12-24” from your face.

60% of my audience watches on a Desktop. Many of those desktops are probably 5K iMacs. Making assumptions like this are only an overall assumption. When your audience is a bunch of video and photo pros, resolution matters. Also, shooting at 16mm focal length in full frame 4k gives me a wide, medium, and tight zoom in option.

I still edit on a 4k timeline and zoom in on the 4k actually. Nobody cares about the resolution loss on the zoom ins. for me personally I like the zooms for comedy.

As far as post production, shooting 4k in 8bit on a sony is as easy to edit with as 1080p .... at least on my base model 13" MBP in FCPX

Out of curiosity, why do you need 4K as a YouTuber? Good AF, yeah I get it. But 4K? Most people are watching on their phones... what’s the benefit of having good 4K?

Post cropping. And also "being the best". I cant tell you how many comments I get when we don't shoot 4k. People say "WHY DONT YOU SHOOOT 4k YOU IDIOT!".
