I agree that a lot of stills lenses are rubbish to manual focus with.   When I first started in my role as an "Olympus Visionary" I told my friends at Olympus the same thing.  I actually have met with the optical and lens designers at their R&D facility in Japan and we talked very specifically about this as I mostly use manual focus when I shoot with these cameras.

The Olympus PRO lenses now have hard stops when in MF, and you seamlessly transition from focus by wire continuous and then into MF mid shot if you want via the way you pull the clutch back.  I love that Olympus have really tried to address this issue.  So far the 7-14, 12-40, 12-100 IS, the 40-150, the 17mm, 25mm and the 45mm 1.2 PRO primes all have this manual focus feature.

The focus ring itself is all gigantic and actually feels great too, its a true mechanical feel.

I can vouch for that. The manual focus by wire is linear so it’s much much easier to do

If it's going to live on YouTube my belief is that you should be adapting to and using everything Google gives you (cards, subtitles, etc,) as the ranking algorithm will give you an edge. So yeah, I would upload to 4K and beyond if possible.

100%. I have had these conversations with YouTube consultants. This is true. VR, 4k at 60fps, EVERYTHING YouTube is offering you need to prioritize that for analytics advantage.

  3. 1080p is good for sure but it’s not any better than all the other canon dslrs and the 5dmk4 1080p and super35 1080p on 1DC are in a different class than that really.

4k is where it’s at. Perfect happy medium. It’s not mind blowingly sharp like GH5 but it’s really usable and runs so smooth on my base model MBP. It’s a shame the rolling shutter is so so bad. I’m putting the camera in a cage to add some weight and make me use it more like a real camera. I think once you add the weight and stuff it’s usable.

I want to try the c-mount veydras on it. I feel like those would be amazing on the m50 crop.

Also, what wide lenses actually work on it? @mercer can you give me a list of those 1” c-mounts you keep talking about?

You hit the nail on the head there... it's so much fun

Simple, satisfying image, great peaking and EVF, no real quirks getting in the way of you making an image, at least if you have the glass to match that crop.

I really hope this is a sign of things to come with that full frame mirrorless.

I'd be willing to try my s16 superspeeds if someone can find a pl adaptor.

I think Andrew is on the right track here. Canon colour, small package, ease of use and inconspicuous. Compliments a bolex well.

Only issue is, ROLLING SHUTTER IS SO SO BAD!!

  6. I’ve been playing around some more. I found a better wide angle adapter. It is able to go over the entire lens just enough to cover the lens and be gaff taped onto it. the autofocus works perfect and the new focal length is 14mm. So we now have a 14mm f2 autofocus lens. It’s perfect for vlogging!

    015B8E3C-84BD-4724-B991-68AE44C7A20E.jpeg

Also, I found the EVF to be way too small and crappy to use as an actual method for manual focusing. So I pulled out my old BMPCC Z-Finder and it works great! I just gaff taped it to the monitor, but you could probably buy the Zacuto sticky mount for it. (You’d loose the ability to fully close the screen obviously.)

Also, I don’t know why but I’m just really enjoying toying around with this camera. I can’t remember when I’ve enjoyed something this much. I had fun like this when I got my BMPCC for the first time, or when I hacked my 5D3 to shoot raw. It’s just plain fun.

  7. Thanks @EOSHD_Twitter and @mercer!

I need to do more testing. The rolling shutter is so so bad though. Is it worse than a6300? Looks like it to me. This camera just needs to be locked down when in 4K mode lol.

Speedbooster is really working well. I need to pick up some EF glass to do more tests. M50 with speed booster makes Canons only fullframe mirrorless camera! ;)

One extra thing I’m trying out is adding an adapter to the 22mm f2. I love that little lens and it’s really the best part of the EF-M system. With a beastgrip wide angle lens, it converts the 22mm to a 10mm f2 lens! Haha. Fun stuff. Keeps the autofocus too. The beast grip wide angle lens is pretty crap. Only paid $14 for it. I’m sure there are better adapters out there. But this setup is nice and small. I ordered a step down ring so I can actually screw it on the lens.

  8. The speed booster and the C-Mount lenses came in today! The speed booster is fishy. Using my all manual CONTAX Zeiss, the image displayed on the M50 is super choppy. Almost like the video card in the camera cant handle it or something. Really weird. But when I put an actual EF lens with electronic contacts on it, it works fine. I assume this has something to do with my Leitax mount CONTAX glass.

Below is the CONTAX ZEISS 28mm F2.8 WITH the speed booster. Shot 1080p, 24fps. I did test the booster, and autofocus with dual pixel DOES work and it works well. What is interesting using this adapter with this camera is, this is the ONLY Canon camera that shoots full frame video with focus peaking and a 4k mode that has a flip out screen. I hope to see a fully articulating screen like this with focus peaking on the future full frame mirrorless from canon.

Below is the same lens. Same distance. Without the speed booster. Just using the EF-M to EF adapter from Canon.

The c-mount lenses were a downer. You get very serious vignette, even in 4k. I know there are some C-Mount lenses that mount on APS-C. Maybe I should pick some of those up. The only way to use the C-Mount in 4k is to either crop it to square format, or zoom in 150%. Neither is a practical thing and I wish I did more research on this before I jumped in. Anyone know any C-Mount lenses that would suffice on a 2.4x crop?

still seeing what appears like spherical abberation. any chance you could provide us with some video samples? with the (1.5x ?) crop in 4K that effect should be diminished.

It looks fairly well contained though. Im going to make a video with the one I get and start bugging Metabones to make one. I hope they do.

Neither of those lenses are particularly great. Fun to mess around with for a stylised look though if you're after that. (I've had both).

What are the BEST c mount primes then if I wanted a good wide and a good normal focal length? Any advice on Zooms? Any that are amazing?

Man, some of you are prepared to jump through a lot of hoops just to get that Canon color in 4K. It's 2018, it shouldn't be that hard, don't you loyalist think?

Of course. But I’m a youtuber. All my canon related videos get twice as many views as non canon videos. So I do whatever I can and find anything I can to talk about canon cameras.

Spot on mate, Spoke to atomos it can only do 4k 30p in pro res raw, I think its due to having the processing power. The 4k 60 can only be done across two drives on the 7q, There may be an option on the 7Q I doubt Atomos will support it.

Great stills buddy, Get a c500 i my opinion yes it lacks the Dynamic range of the C300MKII no Clog 2 or 3 or autofocus, but.... It has 12 bit 60fps 4444 the c300 mark 2 can only do this in 10 bit over 30fps it can do 12bit 4444 only up to 30fps. The 12 bit 4444 is beautiful in 60fps. It has 4k 60p raw AND HALF RAW.. The fan noise is a pain but run and gun stuff your ok.  1080p is ok internal no frame rates tho that are any good. I nearly brought a c300mkii but saw it more of a side grade not upgrade.

Nice Rig man, Is that shanks Letus Man cam... I would love that for my 1DC... Do you own it? Was the c500 heavy on it? Thanks

It's a shame Canon isn't doing what Sony and Panny are doing with their raw outputs... but whatever.

The rig is actually a frankenstein rig that was based around Shane's setup ya! I have pieces from redrock, zacuto, and letus. I really love the handles on that rig. It's super heavy for sure...but works a charm. I need to get a good follow focus setup though.

  13. @Ollywood88 I love hearing your thoughts and perspective on the C500. I own and love my 1DC and have been hesitant to get rid of it. But C500 with Canon Raw makes a lot of sense for me and my workflow. Im having to convert all my MJPG files to ProRes on a daily basis and its a pain. If I could natively dump my footage into FCPX and actually have RAW. ooooh man.

I love the C300 mk1 and debated getting one as well...so having the C500 in addition to the 1DC would be a match made in heaven since they were sorta made together. So funny that it has taken this long for this tech to be obtainable enough for people like me. I think the C500 cost like $30,000 or something when it came out. I saw one on eBay for buy it now at $4500. Insanity.

Here's a project I DP'd on using the C500 over a year ago I did. (The editors had to edit on a 720p timeline....)

Everything functions like normal, DPAF works fine  (though I do find my 35mm F2 IS USM is more smoother than 50mm 1.8 STM),  lens correction for EF lens works fine too (dont have ultra wide to test out distortion yet)

Regarding the crop factor in 4k I thought it was 2.56x?  isn't 2.56*.71=1.8x? or is the crop even more?  I just base on it on calculation, though I need to test it vs gh5s regarding crop factor to see which have narrow view.

EOS Utility v. 3.8.20 works with M50 on tethering

DANNNG. Thanks for posting. Just bought the last one! ?

I love the C500.  Just the image.  Even the internal 1080 (to me at least) - looks a lot more organic than the C300.  This vid was done with a CP.2 50mm, all internal HD recording.  (Some GoPro in there as well, easy to spot).

Did you make that? It’s great! Can you put the handgrip on the camera?
