Ok! Thanks for the info! Another wee question, the MacBook Pro, which year is it from? I guess you use proxies? I'm thinking about getting a MacBook for SDEs but I want the bare minimum outlay as I usually use my iMac (for my GH5 4k 50p and 4k 10bit stuff, so kinda on topic!).

I use the 2016 MacBook Pro 13” without touchbar as my workhorse and it’s great!

    No proxies!

Great work. I have a question, I guess you film each presentation completely because otherwise how do you get the sound and image of the quotes. The thing is, if you are on your own, how on earth do you find the time to save the footage on the computer, find the best bits, edit and export??? I presume that you also use at least 2 cameras.

    * I note that this was a 3 day job  but the other was all in one day.

Yes I forgot to mention that I received the ProRes recordings from the IMAG cameras that were operated full time during the conference. Usually at conferences like this you can get a feed from the camera operators and also get a nice board feed for audio. To be honest...I just imported it all and quickly tried to find any good nuggets. I stayed up all night prepping the edit and it was a three day shoot but the bulk of the edit happened on the last day of the conference.

Shot 90% of it in 4k at 60fps on GH5...used FCPX on my base model 13" MacBook Pro and it was great. Didn't have any issues with computer being slow.

I can see photography being very rewarding in that way.

What is vitro meat?  I mean, I could Google it but I would rather hear your explanation.

Yeah, crew members kind of get the best aspects of video...production!  That said, a crew member isn't having to see the whole thing through.

Dave, I agree.  I shat on Vlogs as an art form but they really are creatively liberating.  Basically as instantly gratifying as music.  The most I want to do is stuff like that or short little creative vignettes that co-feature music and visuals.

That's awesome! Id love to see your daily type of content.

I started doing corporate same day edits last year and really loved it. The adrenaline rush from it is insane. You get that instant gratification and when they show the film at the end of the event with hundreds of people watching it on a big screen...it just doesn't get much more fulfilling than that. The last three shots of the STORY video were shot like 20 minutes before the people in the audience watched it. I heard people gasping in the crowd from it. You guys should try this type of thing. You can charge a ton of money for it and its really fulfilling.

    Thank you @Orangenz!

I started with music long before video so it is easier for me. Video has always been tough, I can do it and I have invested time into it but definitely not something I am head over heels for.  Something about not realizing creative ideas for 3-12 months that doesn't sit well with my ADD.

Anyone else ever feel that way?  Its great and it's a fulfilling art form but damn is it tedious to see a creative idea from conception to completion. In my experiences, music is infinitely more fluid.

That's why I have totally shifted gears from pursuing directing and am a full time Youtuber now. Making videos that have a daily turnaround time is really fun for me

How's the AF in video mode on the A7R III?

Will be trying it out in January.

It’s great! Been using it the last three weeks with the 24-105 on a gimbal and it works great. I wish Sony has a similar UI as canon with just the touch tracking AF. You can touch points but no tracking. For most stuff I leave it set to wide focus mode with face tracking enabled and it nails it 90% of the time

another thing is the focus peaking has been greatly improved. It’s really useable now. Pair that with a screen that doesn’t dim, and ibis when shooting 4K and you got a great body for manual glass. I’ve been using my Contax Zeiss lenses and love it. For both photo and video. I’ve been able to nail manual focus more than ever with the new peaking and evf.

  6. Sell your ronin immediately and buy a used MoVI M5. Ronin is total crap and has a robotic look to it that can't be dialed out. I have been a FreeFly MoVI user since the beginning and every time I talk to people who use Ronins and I mention MoVI they say "oh its expensive blah blah". Then I ask if they have ever tried a MoVI and they always say no. Once you try a MoVI you never go back. At NAB FreeFly mentioned they are working on a handheld gimbal like a zyhun crane for next NAB...so we will see. FreeFly has patents on this tech that is truly special and its really the best. Rent one and see for yourself. But seriously...throw that Ronin in the garbage. Its crap

I wouldn't say I'm happy with the camera - but it produces great images. The A7R2 is obnoxiously slow, no touchscreen, moving the focus point around is a PITA, battery life could be better, can't toggle FF/s35 mode (something I do a lot) and so on. Like I said, the R3 addressed every complaint I have about the R2, but its the same sensor and no IQ improvements outside of slightly better FF video. The operation/body improvements are nice, but after tinkering with one for awhile I'd rather get another lens than eat $1500 for the upgrade. I'm coming from the perspective of a A7R2 user, so for me its a reasonable decision despite the newness of the camera.

1080p 120fps video, amazing AF for video, and the ridiculous rolling shutter performance are enough for me to justify a $1500 upgrade. Thats just me though. I need AF every day and sometimes I hand hold selfie shot stuff and having good rolling shutter performance is so important.

Personally guys, I won't be buying one.

You can bet the A7S III will blow it away for video.

And the competition is huge... D850, GH5, Leica SL in particular.

You still aren’t going to buy one? It’ll resell well when the a7Siii comes out.

Yep, I used velcro in order to filter out most of the vibrations. Its much easier to detach/reattach as well...

Great trick! I’ll try that. What cable and wind screen are you using ?

  9. After three weeks with a7Riii I think I will hold off as well on OWNING it. (I get to keep the cameras I review for a while before returning them to Kinotika).

All the things I love about it are in the new body, handling, and autofocus.

The main thing its lacking for me is good low light ability. If the a7Siii comes with all the things I love about this plus better LL performance.....PRAISE GOD. a7S3 will be the ticket man. SO so nice.

  10. Honestly I was pro net neutrality until I saw these. It really opened up my mind on the issue. Now Im conflicted.

Please watch them before you comment and respond with emotions. Take it in and listen to what they have to say. Its important to be educated on both sides. Like I said, Im now on the fence on whether itll be good or bad. Let me know what you think after you watch those! Really interesting stuff.

  11. I submitted my rolling shutter test to the dvxuser Samuel H and the results are stunning!

    a7R III 1080 S35 --- 6.1 ms

    a7R III 1080 FF ---- 7.7 ms

    a7R III 4k S35 ---- 16.0 ms

    a7R III 4k FF ----- 22.8 ms

Just added the a7R III to the table. It's a very good performer: 4k FF is not bad (22.8 ms), 4k S35 is very good (16.0 ms, in line with the C200 and the BM 4.6k), and for those shots that need minimal RS, you can just swap to 1080p, which is super fast (7.7 ms in FF and 6.1 ms in S35).

For comparison, the a7S II was 30.4 ms in FF 4k mode. Nice to see these improvements rolling in.

Thanks for keeping the sample videos coming my way <3”
