  1. It’s been over a month now since the release of ProRes Raw and I’m seeing people like Caleb Pike and others doing tests with ProRes Raw and it’s gotten me really really excited. The usability of it seems to be unreal. It got me thinking... the two best options in my opinion for price and performance would be the C500 and FS700. Is it worth picking one of these cameras up used to try ProRes raw on? I’m sure BMPCC 4K will get an update that it’ll shoot ProRes raw eventually, but the C500 has never been cheaper and more appealing to me. Anyone have any thoughts or experiences with either camera?

Here is a video from Caleb about his journey to ProRes raw. I can’t believe how well it holds up and I’ve been waiting for something like this ever since 2010 when I tried RED raw for the first time.

I'm curious about your shooting process. Are you doing focusing yourself. What about gimbal use? You have any wireless focus motors?

    1. I shoot by myself and with my assistant. We always have the SmallHD focus monitor on it.

    2. I’ve always shot on gimbals with manual focus. I’ve always shot on cameras that only have manual focus. This is not an issue. It’s how I learned and how I’ve always shot. I just set the focus, look at my monitor and make sure the subject I want to be in focus is in focus, then I make my move. Very simple really. On the MoVI M5 you can take one hand off and change focus while you hold the gimbal by the top handle.

You have to treat the 1DC like a 5D mkiii basically. Use a monitor or a Zacuto Z finder and you’re set! It’s what we all did back in 2010 and that’s all I’m doing now.

  3. If money, cards, and computing power are no problem, I’d totally still go with a 1DXii and just shoot all 4K all the time. Get an iMac Pro and edit in FCPX probably won’t even need to convert the footage to ProRes.

But idk. I need to test this. Apple store says you can bring a hard drive and do some test edits there. I’ll bring some MJPG and try it out on the iMac pro.

I will say, we shoot all our videos in 4K on the 1DC and I convert everything to ProRes LT on my $1200 MBP and it works fine. Just takes a while to convert

  4. Ya I’ve kept thinking about switching to 5d4. But I don’t wanna give up that full frameish 4K. But I think it probably would be fine. Especially with an 18-35.

As for the GH5S... I’ve held off for the BMPCC4k!

  5. @DBounce We just made a roundup about the 1DX II and 1DC and M50... it’s more on the beginners side, but even though I have my reasons for 1DC I think I agree with Brandon! Although, I did order a M50 and I’m looking forward to using that camera. Justin says it’s the cleanest looking 1080p he’s ever seen on a Canon DSLR. I hope a 90D happens soon with the same sensor and full sensor readout 4K with dual pixel AF!

  6. Can you mount any S16 C mount zooms on the GH5? I know on my old Pocket and obviously the Digital Bolex it worked...but I wonder if any of the old amazing vintage C Mount zooms would work on GH5 sensor without vignette.

I came across the YouTube channel of Canadian vlogger and model Piper Blush last night and was pretty astounded by the rendition of brilliant primary colors and accurate skin tones in her videos, as well as by how clean they look (not referring to the content here- hehe). Her work, best viewed with the volume turned off, gives ample opportunity to check out skin tones; and strictly out of a sense of scientific duty, I pored over a number of her uploads, only to find that they are all consistently well-exposed ?. I wrote to ask what she shoots with, and it turns out to be an a6500. Anyhow, some of the loveliest colors I’ve seen yet by any YouTuber.

Lol. Ive seen her before. I need to look away :P

I think the EM1 mark 2 is a far better stills camera. 60fps RAW and ProCapture come to mind.

Thanks for the comment John. Im curious to test one out. I was thinking of picking up a 12-100 with my BMPCC 4K and buying an EM1 mk2 with the 12-100 is a good deal so might as well pick that up as well. An EM1 mk2 as a B to a BMPCC 4k will be nice I think.

    Thank you.

I apologize for taking this thread off topic, but I gotta ask...

Is the LCD of a7R III better than that of the a6500?

    NO dimming in 4K?

    Better colors?

    Better 1080p?

    Thanks in advance.

If you want to look at the a7riii as a S35 only video camera it has SEVERAL advantages over a6500

    better ibis

    2 hrs battery life

    no screen dimming

best rolling shutter performance on any mirrorless cam

    better color science with HLG

    better 120fps 1080p

My MENU function (create your own menu)

    better customizability with the buttons.

    more weatherproof

Forgive me for interrupting but I have used both cameras: The a7riii has less rolling shutter, better motion cadence (imho), a better noise reduction algorithm which reduces ghosting outside of the log-gammas and it's easier to pull manual focus due to the better EVF and screen. If you like sharpness in full frame, then the a7iii is better of course, but sharpness is, as we know, a bourgeois concept.

    What he said.

    Hi @DaveAltizer I’m debating between A7Riii and A7iii

if the AF for video on A7R3 is as good as A73 especially in the low light for continuous AF for video, I’ll get the A7R3. I take a lot of photos for large prints and I like the resolution. I’m getting the A7xxx for video. I’ll be using it on gimbal so I need a reliable AF. If A7R3 video is not as good I get the A73 and bring along my D810. Which is a pain to carry two systems.

would appreciate sharing your experience. Thanks!

If you need high res then def go for a7riii. The a7riii IS a better camera than the a7iii for video in almost every way (a7iii has sharper full frame 4k). But is it worth the price?....if you only shoot video...absolutely not. If you need high resolution stills....there is nothing on the market that comes close.

SO if you were buying an a7riii for ONLY video...I would say NO...go for the a7iii. But for both. totally go for it

Loved your review Dave! Would be awesome to see the whole documentary about the balloon artist. Is that possible?

I’ve been so busy with the review channel I haven’t had time to work on it but I really want to. He’s such an inspiring dude!

That's true.. this is BMD after all

For many years, I asked that they make this exact camera (though never imagined they'd pull off 120)

Wonder what the olpf situation will be

I talked to a rep about the olpf at NAB and they said that they tend to not put filters on their cameras and if they do its always minor because they are obsessed with image quality. Kind of a shame in terms of IR pollution. I remember having to put my Hoya IR cut filter on every freaking lens I owned because the original pocket had such bad IR pollution. I think this cam will have the same issue.

I remember watching this back when it was a fresh staff pick, absolutely love the end scene with the digital slate. Nothing better than a really well made short doc. So much great stuff in here.

    Thank you!

@DaveAltizer could you ask BM what the MP count is for stills?

    Ya I’ll ask.

@wolf33d nice to see you there, no matter the incipient focus I believe they will improve to implement tap to focus going with the new touchscreen at least : )

On the discussion between both of you, Jon and Don, I think they really are horses for courses. This new camera is a complete different product indeed, no matter the coincidences : )) A league of its own :-)

Dual ISO is actually truly interesting, not only for the open possibilities we've already known from that couple of models recently introduced by Panasonic.

Our good Dave (Altizer) has inferred this could be the sensor we know from GH5S. Can the fact he reported it directly from their NAB booth really mean something for the subject matter? We know too little so far. Perhaps Dave can add anything on topic whenever possible.

I am glad they had placed their bets through the 4/3" route though.

EDIT -- Seems my post popped up in the middle of something substantially and really meaningful, hey fellas...?! LOL :-)

Believe me. I dug and dug at them to try to get info about the sensor and they won’t say. I don’t think we’ll know exactly if it’s the GH5S sensor until we can do some tests on it. But I’m guessing it is.

So in response to my previous question. I own only 3 lenses, all Nikon mount, Sigma Art 18-35 and 55-100 and 12mm Rokinon Cine DS. I assume the Sigma ones will work with an adapter as they’re 1.7x right? Any thoughts on the 12mm Rokinon? And using a speedbooster with non FF lenses would just be stupid right?

Ya you can use an adapter and even a metabones speed booster to change the crop to almost full frame!

I preordered. I hope it boosts Sony to release better than 4K60p 8 bit on A7siii though...

This thing is magnificent but that AF......  Same camera with Canon DPAF I would pay double the price easily.
I love the screen, the recording formats... image will be gorgeous. No IBIS means Gimbal and Gimbal means continuous AF. Never right...

Not so fast my man! The ronin-s has a fabulous follow focus system that I played with today that would be a dream combination with the BMPCC 4K! I never like using autofocus on a gimbal because it never focuses on what I want it to. My brain is always better at focusing on the subject I’m shooting

Can't be any more stupid than people using a Canon 6D mk II to V Log LoL. I don't think this camera is really any bigger than a GH5 is it?

GH5 is the perfect camera size comparison. It has a better grip than the panny tho!
