    But... but... but...

What you are saying here goes against all forms of logic!!!

What about the 30-minute record limit? What about the overheating? What about the tilt-only screen? What about the 8-bit codec? What about the lack of 4K 60p? What about the sharper 1080p on the GH5? What about the micro HD port? What about the waveform monitor on the GH5? What about the Sony color "science"??? Did they fire the  twelve-year-old intern who was previously in charge of color science for Sony?

    This is heresy ?

p.s. please don't flame me. I own four sony cameras.

All those things go out the window for me as a daily Youtuber. Reliable AF and great low light in full frame 4k is all I need. Good in camera audio as well is important to me.

Color science is better though. A7III paired with EOSHD ProColor V4 is great.

almost 3hr battery too! Unless the GH6/S has better AF I won't switch. Its a necessity for me now days....

For what reasons are you using the A7 III more?

Curious to know as I’m deciding whether to go all Panasonic or all Sony for my new venture.

I’m in the same boat as @EOSHD_Twitter  the Sony is more reliable. Better workhorse and the full frame sensor is great to have. As much as I love the video specs on a GH5/S, the reliability and image out of the Sony is better to me.

And i know the canon mirrorless won’t have IBIS or flat profiles or the ability to plug in an XLR mic like the sony

"Set everything up"...there is only one setting mentioned for FCPX, or am I completely missing something? “Show HDR As Raw Values” is mentioned 3 separate times in the PDF.  I'm not seeing any other settings mentioned other than the EOS match LUT, which isn't related to the HLG color issue.

HDR footage shows up over exposed and insane. But just try pulling your highlights down and playing with it. All the information is there. The LUT fixes it too. So just apply the lut and you’ll see

I hate to say it, but I’m going to hold off from buying the new MBP. I’m thinking there is no compelling reason to part with close to $7k when it’s likely there is no performance gain in real-world use.

As for the eGPU, it’s probably going back. It might make some difference to render times, but slow render times was never my motivation for purchasing it.

Just went into the apple store with a hard drive full of 1DC MJPG files. FCPX cuts through it like a breeze. I layered four layers of MJPG 4k in a timeline and added a color grade. It played fine. Only when I did 8 layers did it drop frames.

Apple has a leasing program I wasn't aware of. An iMac Pro base model to lease is like $180 a month for a 24 month lease. A MBP to lease is $160 a month! For $20 more you can have a computer that SMOKES. Im going to think more about it, but I may go iMac Pro. I sit in my office all day anyways.

Ok, just did some testing with the 1DXMk2 files. Honestly, FCPX seems to be about the same either way with these files. They play back ok on both in internal and external drive. And the eGPU makes no perceivable difference. I'm thinking my money would be better spent on a fast external M.2 drive for the C200 files. Transfer speeds make a very noticeable difference where the C200 is concerned. A fast drive would seem to offer the best bang for the buck.

Thank you for testing that. So sad that it's sucking. I hope FCPX fixes this so external GPU is better. I guess Ill go with an i7 MacBook Pro 15". I still need to try an iMac Pro with MJPG files.

Well I’ve had more time to play with the eGPU and.. I’m not sure it has anything to do with the perceived performance gains. I think it’s not that the RawLite files require a lot of computational power, but rather just a lot of bandwidth to read them quickly enough for smooth playback.

Yesterday I moved some footage over to my built in drive which can read at 2000/MBs and had no playback issues at all. Also no performance difference with eGPU connected or unplugged.

I now believe the 2016 MBP 15” is fast enough to handle playing back these files... provided you have a fast storage solution.

Rendering may be another matter, but honestly I never had an issue with rendering.

Can you do some testing with your MJPG files from your 1DXII? That is what I am thinking will really see a jump. If you can natively play MJPG inside of FCPX without transcoding, things would get a lot better for me....

I know you showed the Frame Grab like it was in the water. Is it sort of waterproof you think at all?? I mean like if it starts raining.

I wouldn't recommend it, and neither would DJI...its not rated as being "weather proof" however.....if you get a little splash on it or a bit of rain, I don't think it'll ruin it!

Fantastic review, Dave! Now I really want that thing ...

Hey Thanks! Really appreciate the kind words! Ya...its a great gimbal for sure

Yeah as expected. This will not replace even the ronin 2 or the original ronin let alone the movi. Im buying the ronin s next to the original ronin which I still use to fly heavy setups. And the ronin s for some more event type shooting with the pocket.

Totally. I will still use a MoVI Pro for bigger setups, but for everyday use, especially if you are a single operator, the Ronin-S is great

GH5s is a totally different camera.  Personally I see plenty of situations where I would go with the C100 mk II over a GH5s.  They are both nice cameras but I see each having strengths in different scenario.  C100 mk II's APS-C sensor, DPAF, and native use of EF lenses to name a few make it a natural over the GH5s for certain jobs.  Also what is the low light comparison between the two?

GH5S low light is better than C100 mkii

Honestly, I disagree with you guys. The GH5/5S are video cameras trapped in a stills form factor. Only thing missing is the built in ND. You get XLR and TIMECODE which the C100 doesnt even have.

If 1080p is all you need, there is a 10bit option (which the C100 doesnt have)

ONLY reason I still shoot on 1DC is because there isn't any full frame stills camera that also gives me AT LEAST 8bit 4:2:2 4k internally.

  10. I own a 1DC and have used the HDMI out before in 4k mode and it really does look great. Better than a C100 for sure and its APS-H instead of S35 so you get a little more room with your lenses.

I will say however, if you either convert all your footage to ProRes, or you edit on an iPad Pro......the 4K MJPG can be dealt with.

By the way, an iPad Pro can play 4k MJPG files like its nothing in LumaFusion

    My predictions for the a7siii

    1. 8-bit 4-2-2 internal.

    2. No 30 min recording limit.

    3. 18MP sensor.

    4. Better EVF.

    5. Venice Colour Science.

    6. Higher bitrate option for video.

    7. Better Menu layout.

Though there is a likelihood that ONLY 2-3 of these will make it to the final product. And most likely the least radical ones.

5 and 7 only practical ones imo

What Canon seems to get right is not only the colors but - just as importantly - a video image that is not overprocessed (like, IMHO, that of Sony and Panasonic mirrorless cameras). It doesn't seem to be artificially sharpened, and there's no aggressive noise-filtering either.

Can't wait for the 4K video feature to trickle down to all Canon consumer mirrorless cameras, particularly the successor of the current EOS-M100 [which is just a fantastic always-with-you street photography camera].

Exactly. the implementation here is incredible. When shot properly, the M50 4k is REALLY nice.

This entire video was shot on the M50 in 4k (with the exception of the ending which was 1DC)

  13. Canon rumors released some specs on the new G7X III and M5 II. I'm most excited to see what they do with the M5. The M5 is supposed to be a higher end camera from the M50...but the M50 is so so good IMO. If they have 4k with DPAF and no crop...now we're talking. That new sensor paired with the Digic 8 might allow that to happen. My thoughts are maybe at VidCon Canon will release the G7X Mark III. It's the perfect "vlogger" camera and would be a nice splash in the market coming off the trails of the Sony RX100 6.

We are going to VidCon next week so I will let you know if anything happens there.

Here are the specs from Canon Rumors:

    EC804 – Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III

    4.2x Zoom

    1″ sensor

    DPAF

    4k Video (no DPAF)

    GPS

This camera features a new Canon 1″ sensor

EC811 Canon EOS M5 Mark II

    28.3MP APS-C mirorless camera

    4K@30fps video and DPAF.

This camera features a new Canon APS-C sensor

  14. I did some tests comparing my 1DC to the M50 in 4K.

In the video, you can see that the 1DC in 4K actually has better rolling shutter performance. Also, to my eye...the 1DC has an advantage in overall image quality. More richness and color information in the files. It also seems a bit sharper as well.

HOWEVER, with a speed booster, the M50's 4K is usable, and if anything, will serve as an excellent B camera for interviews. The rolling shutter in 4K is probably so bad that I wouldn't recommend it for gimbal shots. But as you can see in the test, using the FCPX rolling shutter fix plugin, it stabilizes it fairly well.

I'm hoping a true full frame 4k mirrorless camera comes from Canon soon!
