Brilliant review, love the funky VHS style.

Thanks man! Just trying to make it more entertaining.

Yeah quite a funky style there @DaveAltizer

By the way how is the workflow with A7RIII proxies & FCPX?  A7rII had proxies as well, but the names were different between the clips so it was useless for any proxy work.

Also brighter apertures help a lot for AF speed in low light conditions, so if events is your gig then a f/2.8 or less would make a big difference.

Honestly, I havent done any tests yet with proxy. Ill let you know. The camera is fine in low light. Unless a7S3 has some great video features like 4k at 60 and 10bit, then the a7Riii is a really great option i think!

I hear ya on the dual pixel AF point. Pulling focus on this needed a bit more attention to detail.

I think even at baked profiles, the 1dc still has a better roll off and mojo that the 1dx doesn't have.

It's magic. I have upgrading considered the 1dxmkii so many times. But its not the same when I shoot with it.

Ahhhh! You’re not making it easy for me! Lol.

New project I am working on

    Straight out of the Can.

Gosh I still love the 1dc.  (4k pull out). This camera was ahead of its time.. Trst6.thumb.jpg.ae713d71e722648476064e6a7f4fbc1b.jpg

Yup. Still hasn't been beat. Literally...nothing else can beat the camera in 2017 from canon. 1DX II is a little bit of a downgrade...but Im considering selling my 1DC for one just for the dual pixel AF.

Thanks for the post, but when you switched to A7Riii from canon your skin tones looked horrible. Just so redish!  Is it with the profile? I was convinced to get this camera, but seeing your skin vs. canon...I'm not sure anymore. Can you help clarify what happened there please. Thanks!

I’ll do more tests. It’s not that bad. My white balance was off

If you still have your Canon cameras it would be great to see how well you can match the colors by playing with the picture profiles. Cine2/cine4 with sgamut3.cine/cinema/pro and a boost in saturation and red color depth would be a great starting point :) . Of course comparing the AF tracking between them would also be great. Rolling shutter differences between FF and S35 maybe?

    Thanks, and enjoy the camera!

Yes! I still have my 1DC and 80D. Ill compare the AF to the Dual Pixel AF..and rolling shutter for sure on both 4k FF and S35 as well as 1080p FF and S35.

Sorry folks, I have adjusted the sensor size numbers- here is the corrected ones...  ;-)

Guys,...this should "sill" blow your minds:

    Sony A6500 vs. (potential) "GH5-S"

    Physical sensor size and pixel count;

    - Sony A6300/6500 (Sony IMX284) 24.3mp APS-C (23.6 x 15.6mm) = 368
    - GH5-S - (Sony IMX294) 11mp Micro 4/3 (17.3 x 13mm) = 225
    ______________________________________________________
    Average photosite (pixel) size;

    - Sony A6300/6500 = 368/24.3mp = 15.1
    - GH5-S = 225/10.7mp = 21.0

    Compared together = 21.0/15.1 = 1.39x LARGER pixels on this "GH5-S"!

This Sony STARVIS IMX294 sensor "should" easily out perform the A6300/6500 in low light conditions. This does not even take into account the "quad pixel+ dual shutter speed" HDR modes that nobody understands yet.

This only thing that we are going to lose is the lovely 5k oversample that we all love in the GH5 today  :-(

    There....I think that's more accurate now! ;-)

    WOW!!!!

    I love your enthusiasm!!

Why would Panasonic lend the camera out to Neistat? Seems like a poor candidate to test/QC the range of features on this type of camera.

I spoke to a Panasonic Rep at NAB this year. The day before NAB Casey switched to the GH5 and talked about it in his vlog. The Panasonic rep told me that as soon as that video went up, their pre-orders on the GH5 went up 20%. That was in 24 hours back in April. I can't imagine the number of sales that have been done just from Casey since then.

Isn't increasing the saturation and color depth actually reducing the dynamic range?
I was thinking it was supposed to be left at default values, adjusted in post, and the only and most important thing about sLog2 is to overexpose by 2 stops.

I made this profile before the EOSHD Sony 3.0 profile was out. If you want the best image use his profile. It looks the best.

  9. The thing that blows my mind is that no amount of money can buy you a small dslr sized camera, with a flip out screen, that shoots at least 4k at 60fps, and also takes stills... has good autofocus. I don’t care how much it costs. I need a SMALL dslr sized photo/ video hybrid with RELIABLE AF. It’s a HUGE need in the marketplace because of the YouTube revolution.

If the GH5s shoots 4k up to 60fps, and has reliable autofocus... I don’t care how much it costs, I NEED that tool for my job and there is literally not a single camera that fills that need right now.

  10. I love it! Great setup!

The struggle I am having is the constant battle of production value and execution. I have found that when it comes to camera and tech reviews, you sorta have to have good production quality because the people watching it expect it. But the vloggers and YouTubers who are literally making millions of dollars a month have crap production quality because the vast majority of their viewers couldn't care less.

Did you shoot and process any Raw from the C200? I’m thinking about renting one in the summer for a short film.

No I haven’t tested raw yet. I’m not that interested in it unless I’m directing a bigger budget thing. But if it’s bigger budget, I’ll just rent Arri anyways lol

Hey Dave, I just watched some of your videos on Vimeo, congrats for the amazing work!! After you tried both cameras how did the video quality compare between the c200 and 1dx? which one do you like the most?

Thanks man. I think for my style of shooting the 1DX II suits my needs best. I’m considering selling my 1DC and getting the 1DX II with the money from that. I’ll be sad, but it’ll be a nice upgrade I think for me. Especially as a “YouTuber”. I need stills and I need video. I want the flexibility of having 4k and having a higher bit rate. I don’t want or need Log because for youtube I shoot everything baked in to save time. I also shoot handheld often so having minimal Rolling shutter is great.

Digital Bolex, such a one of a kind camera!

Finishing a commercial today that I shot on it! I still rent the bolex. My buddy has a full zeiss S16 lens set that goes with it. Love the image on that camera so so much.

I don't know that the Canon is a "luxury status item". The 1DXMk2 is a real workhorse of a camera. Low-light is great and reliability is first rate. The only negative would be the size. The Leica is certainly more of a luxury item... I checked one out at the Leica store in DC...  it's a lovely beast... money should not be a issues if you are considering a Leica system camera. So as I always say, why does one have to be mutually exclusive of the other? If you want a Leica and you want a EVA1... or FS7...  just buy both.

Are you still loving your 1DX II even with your GH5? What do you find yourself using most?

  14. @EOSHD_Twitter has talked about both cameras quite a bit and I have recently become fascinated with the Leica SL for video. Obviously, the 1DX has the Dual Pixel AF, but has anyone had experience with the Leica SL autofocus? How does the internal 4k compare? The SL has a 10bit 4k out...They are both similar in price. Curious to know your thoughts. It seems that the SL was overpriced and overlooked pretty quickly in the video market...but that peaks my interest as the 1DC and digital bolex were also overlooked.

I'm not sure if my interest in Leica SL is simply camera lust or not....probably lust.
