  1. @liork I hope not the same sensor! I have been saying for years now that the a7S sensor is incorrect. It's just wrong. It doesn't render colors correctly. @EOSHD_Twitter solved a lot of these issues with his color profiles, but the a7s sensor needs to be totally replaced. You can see that Sony noticed it with their newer a6300/6500 sensors having better color, along with the a9 having more accurate color.

  2. @maxotics absolutely. It's not going to win awards at having the most cinematic images on the planet, but gosh darn it, it sure is a practical camera for what I do. These last two weeks, I have been shooting and editing at least two or three videos a day on youtube. Anything to help me move faster and have less hassle will help me so much.

    @DaveAltizer yep..sound!

maybe use a small recorder from Tascam to connect to your lav, sound is very important and can elevate your videos quality much higher, do not underestimate good sound on videos, and most phones that do not advertise their DAC and the such, ain't that good on sound. What camera did you use for the video (except the 2 action cams obviously!)?

I have some lav recommendations if you'd like. The Sony wireless system is quite cheap, the included mic is of rather good quality (not stellar, but you get it almost for free) and it can be connected to Sony cameras through the hot shoe (I do not own any Sony, just mentioning that because a lot of people do). Rode wireless system is quite good too, fully digital, and the price is silly, if you do not mind the size of RX/TX. If you have money to burn, the Sennheiser digital wireless system (not the old G3 and the such) with the MKH mic (not the cheaper ME version) is really really good, with a very advanced "auto-gain" function (which isn't auto gain, but just to simplify it) that saves a lot of work in post later on, the TX/RX are very small, the smallest cheap-o of the cheap (cheap, I mean less than a thousand!), plus, the advanced lav is of really pro quality (and small size).

Sony is great, 1" on an action camera is what we need. For me the 1" is the starting point for being serious, but I am not 100% sold on this. It seems less than an action cam, and more like a small camera.

I think there is a lot of noise reduction happening in Sony, too, but overall, great image.

Of course! You don’t have to convince me about audio!

Thanks for the recommendations. I’m thinking about picking up the RodeLink.

RX0 II that will record 4k internal will be the one to get if this type of camera is something you need.

    Thanks Dave,

The quality of the Sony is really on another level when compared to the gopro.

P.S. Your videos have come a long way since last time I watched one, I really like the flow. That audio though... The lav is clipping quite a bit...

    Thanks, Don! Really appreciate it!

Ya...I was using the Rode Smartlav going into my phone. I recorded using the voice memos app, which automatically levels the gain. It was clipping quite a bit. I need to use a different app from now on.

Yeah for DSLR's etc i kinda agree. But when you look at cinema cameras. And you want to do some handheld walking shots, and dont have the time or the right equipment. This might come in handy. Like running around with a Alexa (+-9kg), you would need to have a good vest + arm + steadycam. It weights alot + takes quite some time to set up + you need a experienced operator. So sometimes you go handheld instead to save time and your back. And this might be a handy addon (not sure until I have seen some raging reviews on it). I am not saying you should do this over a glidecam/gimbal, it will never be as good. But for those times that you need to shoot handheld (but I would surely account for the crop, and shoot a bit wider).

This is the only real advantage IMO. If youre shooting on a Gh5 or smaller camera...just get a handheld gimbal...

But for EPIC's and Alexa's or even my 1DC/ 1DXII type cameras, having this would be easier to shoot with than having a big lunky gimbal to take everywhere

  6. Very interesting indeed! I need to pick this up and give it a shot. Things to know about this thing though:

You need to jack up your shutter speed to reduce motion blur. The footage can be stabilized..but obviously cant remove motion blur.

It only takes GoPro Hero 3 batteries...(this is weird)

    You need mic jack input

Still a bit in "beta". Not really a FINAL production item.

However this is really exciting tech, and I imagine, some big company will buy them out and make an actual production unit that is more user friendly and realistic.

What I'm curious about, but still haven't found an answer for is if SxS adapters for SD (or XQD) cards work in an Arri Alexa? Haven't ever yet found an answer for that. As if they are compatible (I use SD cards in their SxS adpater for my Sony PMW-F3) then that is a tremendous cost savings if buying a secondhand Arri Alexa.

Nice!! Very clever. I’m not sure. You would think it would work?

  8. @IronFilm

Nailed it. For sure! I have the lenses, tripod, filters, etc...so all I would need is a few V mount batteries and some SxS Cards I would be set.

I don't talk about this much on this forum but my Dad is a director or feature docs and I shoot with him a lot. The last two films we made went to theaters and we have a few more in the works. The fact that ARRI Alexa is so obtainable is revolutionary and really really exciting!

I shoot all 1DC right now and love dealing with ridiculous cameras for a gorgeous image payoff.

I rent Alexa often for high budget commercials and music videos I direct. Here are a few projects I directed that were all Alexa

In Nashville, there is a large community of people that I work with that rent Alexa's and I would imagine if I had a ready to go kit that I could rent it out.

Problem is..I would have to sell a lot of crap to pay for it and I would not want to go into debt to purchase it.

Roman on vimeo brought up a good point in his comment to me:

"My guess though is that it's only going to get cheaper very soon here. The Alexa and the sensor that's been used in every single version of the camera is pretty much at the end of its rope. I'll bet you anything by NAB next year they'll finally release a new version of the Alexa that can be purchased by rental houses with a brand new sensor. At that point... it's going to be a free-for-all. Like... so SO many bodies are going to be dumped left and right it's gonna be nuts."

Chances are..the best time to buy it will be when the newest sensor comes out.

REGARDLESS...the fact that we are justifying the purchase of an ARRI ALEXA that is the same price of a C300 mkii blows my mind. REALLY exciting.

  9. @dbp

I would be happy to deal with the sluggish workflow for that DANG SEXAYYY IMAGE! I shoot 90% on sticks anyways!

I'm going to be digging around for one. Arri Alexa would be worth selling my 1DC for! Lol.

Leitax makes a great Canon EF adapter for Alexa too that would be perfect for my CONTAX Zeiss kit. They have the Leitax mounts on them already. http://www.leitax.com/conversion/Cine/Alexa/index.html

DANG..imagine my youtube content shot on ALEXA lol. MKBHD on steroids.

Had a conversation with Roman Alaivi about his on vimeo....insane.

  10. I was curious to see what used ARRI Alexa's were going for and I was shocked to see that a Classic EV model goes for $8k-$10k on average. Is this camera using the same sensor technology we have in the modern ARRI's? Is this a practical thing to get into? $10K is very doable and reasonable...and for ARRI...gosh darn it....

Why keep comparing everything to a standard when you can just OWN the standard?

DUDE!! THIS WAS AWESOME!! It felt like a TV show. Really amazing!

I will say, YouTube is a totally different type of medium and needs to be treated as such. The format and layout are totally different than TV or Movies. All I would add to this video is a call to action at the end if doing this more often is something you want to do.

I disagree with @fuzzynormal  The length was great! You have to remember, youtube's motive is to keep people on their site as long as possible, so if you can create engaging content and keep peoples watch time up, then you will win. The film never got boring or stagnant. I loved all of it. Don't change it and make another one! Just bang it out.

ALSO, side note, I'm thinking of picking up the new Canon XF400 for YouTube. This video really made me love the camcorder look that you can get using a good camera.

I’m shooting a review with the RX0 as we speak. I’m aware of other competition. But when you review a new iPhone, you compare it to the previous version. That’s all. Gopros vs Gopros. I’m sure YI is great but that’s not what most people care about. I’m trying to get views and clicks and people overall don’t care about Yi as much as GoPro. Just like people who use iPhone typically don’t care about android as much.

NAB 2018 is too late. They need to compete with PANA.
My prediction is A7SIII will get same improvements as A7RIII: dual slot, battery, good AF, ...  + 4K60P + 10 bit.
In which case I would rather get it than the GH5.

The PDAF from the A9 for video + GH5 video specs + Full Frame is absolute winner for me. Paired with A7RIII for photography and you are all set.

I agree with all that but we don’t have any real clue on when it’ll come out. NAB 2018 makes sense. Or CES 2018. Idk
