Does someone know what happens, when recording 4K on the 5D m3 / 1DX m2 externally? When recording 4K, the output will be only 1080p...BUT: Is this "native 1080p" or downsampled 1080p from the 4K (generally top-notch quality when downsampling) running?

If so, this could be a great solution to

    1. Bypass the poor Canon in camera 1080p
    2. One could get top notch 1080p and save disk space, because one does not have to store petabytes of Canon original 4K data

Someone out there who knows or could test?

Pretty sure James Miller (Philip Bloom's buddy) did some tests with this with the 1DC which has similar external outputs.

Ive done tests with my 1DC. When shooting 4k the external output is a really nice clean 1080p and you get that "full frameish" look.

I think the logical upgrade to a 1DC is the 1DMKii. The two handle the same. All lenses are native. If you are comfortable with the 1DC you will be at home with the 1DXMKii. I also suspect it will not be made obsolete every six months like Sony cameras. So it should retain reasonable value. If you can't get the job done with a 1DXMKii, then it's time to consider refining your skills.

I agree. I'm considering it for sure. I just like the idea of having a smaller camera. The 5D is half the weight

Wow. That's... pretty bad. Rolling shutter is something I always research before buying a camera, and after seeing that link I'm glad I haven't gotten the 5D4. My 1DX2 is certainly expensive, but it does just fine with fast motion.

Ya I've read that 1DX II handles rolling shutter really well

I've been using 5DIVs where I work and just shot a rallycross race last week with them. The touchscreen and DPAF is great, and so is the 1080p 60. The rolling shutter in 4k is baaaaad though, especially for something with fast action like a car race. The 4k crop does come in handy when you need reach.

Do you know the actual rolling shutter measurement? Is it worse than an a6300?

  4. I've been seriously considering the 5D IV as a upgrade to my 1DC. And I was thinking, same AF, same 8bit 4:2:2 codec, same canon color as the 1DX II but half the weight and size!

i finally found a great wide angle option for the 4k crop on this camera with the new Tamron 10-24mm HLD
    http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1317273-REG

That Tamron paired with a sigma 18-35 gives you a great kit for 4k with little compromise.

The only thing I don't like is the significantly worse rolling shutter compared to the 1DX II in 4k (tho I'm pretty sure 5D IV in 4k is similar to my 1DC) and the lack of 4k at 60p...

I already have all the CF cards left over from my 1DC!

I'm about to start vlogging more and with the SmallHD Focus I can have a "flip out" screen when I need it.

I added up the weight and a GH5 with the 8-15 lens is only a few oz lighter than the 5D IV with tamron.

I would way rather have canons AF and color science PLUS future CLog and obviously full frame STILLS! To take pictures of my future baby :) (my wife is pregnant with our first child)

idk. It seems like an actual "upgrade" sorta to my 1DC. Obviously there are a few down sides but I'm already used to the MJPEG codec, have the cards, have the glass, love the colors, etc.

i just havent seen many people at ALL giving this little camera a chance. Would love to see more action out of this guy. I think there is some gold there if you look hard enough (and use the right glass)

1.7x crop is what the Blackmagic Production camera was. Which means same for the original URSA and AJA CION. It's manageable.

If this camera cost $1500 and was placed as more of a competitor to the a6500 (for video), people wouldn't be as upset about it.

  5. I have been using FCPX since the initial 1.0 release and I was fortunate enough to be able to deal with it as a single camera op/ editor. Now I am working for a production company with 12 people and I am still the only FCPX user in the house. Everyone else is stuck in Adobe. I have been trying to convince them all to switch but they wont. I still carry the FCPX flag and LOVE the speed and keyword tagging. Its such a dialed in program now and has matured well. Wes Plate and Tim Dashwood adding to the team is good news.

Dave thanks for the info, don't mind these pricks... they know not what they do.

Everything you've mentioned seems very plausible, Canon is known for their tier system. They also believe 4K is not the be all end all for all shooters, so it would make sense that they retire the C100, drop the C100ii price, and bring the C200 in at the original C100ii MSRP.

Thanks again, can't wait for Cinegear.

Thanks man. Appreciate the calmness lol. Looking forward to see what is released!

  7. See the new thread C200...as this is what I have learned is what they are calling this camera.

One thing that I thought was interesting was what Alexander Sax told me today. The cinema camera market pulls in $150 million a year. Which is such a fraction of what Canon makes a year which is a total of almost $20 BILLION! Even when Canon USA and the Canon Cine people talk to the high ups about implementing 4k in their lower end models, they look at their profits and compare to Sony/ Nikon/ fuji/ Panasonic and they are still out selling the other companies. So its hard for the Japanese suits to get it and to implement.

Again, wait for Cinegear 2017. That's all that I am hearing and I will hold out for it...............

Isn´t it C100mkiii?, where did you get the C200 word?

A source who has access to a Canon rep directly said they are labeling it C200 for a differentiating between models.

Actually it's a Canon 5D2 upgrade program. Hence the 200 moniker. Sensor unlocked to shoot in 16K resolution up 9000 fps. Only thing is you have to send the camera into the factory as they take a hammer to it and rebuild it with super glue.

Oh yeah, plus they need to stencil on the two 0s, so you know it's a 200.

What do you mean I'm full of shit? I heard it from a Canon rep.

You don't have to trust me, but I know I would be interested to know these things if someone else knew so I am simply just sharing what I have learned by asking around NAB. Lets just wait and see and cinegear.

  9. I just had an "on the record" conversation with the a canon rep today on the show floor and brought up the whole "lack of 4k across the board" issue. They told me that the Japanese corporate people just don't get it but now are seeing some serious impact from Panasonic and Sony. He said their philosophy is that people who buy 77d and t7i don't need 4k but I said the 80d is a great video camera and they should add 4k to that model. He said a 90d with 4k would make sense but not to get our hopes up.

I also spoke to a Panasonic rep today who told me that he was on the airplane sitting next to a Canon rep and the Canon rep told him "you and Sony are eating our lunch in the lower end and the a9 is a serious hit to our high end." The Panasonic rep said this is the first year that Canon reps have the humility and lack of ego/ pride that they normally do.

Also, I spoke to the Canon rep about the c100 mk3. He said it does exist. It's just not here and he couldn't tell me when we will see it. He couldn't confirm any specs. I'll try to dig more on them tomorrow :)

  10. All I heard is from a canon rep that there is a c100 mk3 that is 4k and it will be released soon. I thought we'd see it today but Canon rumors guy told me on twitter we won't see any more canon cinema stuff until later this year. So now all we gots to do is wait.

  11. I was just at the Sony press release and spoke to a Sony Rep. there was literally nothing interesting at the press release. I told the rep I was hoping for a Sony a9s and he asked me why? I told him it's because I want Slog and better video features. He then asked me "why why don't you just get an a7S II?" I said I want phase detect autofocus and the better battery. He then said "well you're going to have to wait a long time."

    conclusion:

nothing new here. Looks like we will wait at least another 6 months before we see anything.

At least I got a free cookie.

The only thing I am afraid off:

A7Siii wont get those nice pro features. Instead we will have to buy A9s to get dual SD, proper battery and so on.

If Sony forces me to choose between a A7SIII with video spec update or A9S at 4500$ just to get the "pro" (but needed) stuff like proper battery and AF, them I am off.

Gosh I hope at LEAST this new battery becomes standard across the board

I prefer the naked look sometimes. Especially the faithful profile, whichh gives me some room to play with colors and Grading.

I shot this  on the 1dc, 95% shots were baked in

I love it! The colors are SO SO rich. More rich than it would be if you shot log and graded it back...because of that 8bit. What are your settings in Faithful? I dial down saturation down two notches and contrast down two notches. Sharpness all the way off.

  14. At my 9-5 job I make YouTube videos for a guy named Anthony ONeal who speaks to students about making smart choices for their future and crap like that :)

I was shooting everything with Canon Log for a while but these videos need me to shoot and edited within like 24 hours so I decided to start shooting everything baked in. The first 10 seconds of this video was shot canon log because the shot had some crazy contrasty light.

....yes there are some dead pixels on my 1dc.....

....no the gospel isnt in this video! hahaha (Some of you know what I am talking about)

Do you guys shoot baked in on Canons? If so...what have you found to be best?

I was going to use an a6500 as my a camera, but I left it at home!!!! :O I had the sony XLR adapter so I just gaff taped my H4N on top of the sony XLR adapter and recored all the audio separately.

I'll probably go if I can get in for free again.

I'm pretty sure the free passes are all expired by now. I had to pay $50
