  3. Redid the whole colorgrading process in ACES after some tests. Way cleaner than any LUT based workflow in REC709 colorspace I used before! This is how the movie will look like:

  4. It's not enough anymore to say the C300 "creates great images" because, at this point, you can use a $500 G7 to create great images. Are there things about the C300's image that are better? Of course, but when it comes to the standard of image quality, virtually every camera maker has gotten to the level where you can get results only dreamed about 10 years ago AND on a budget! We truly are fortunate / spoiled, given we're even able to have this conversation!

  5. One thing I noticed about YT microphone reviews (from people who don't know much about audio) is that they tend to be judging the EQ of the microphone instead of the quality of the sound overall. I'd hear a microphone and think it would be fine with a bit of EQ and then the person would say something like "it sounds thin and hollow - not even usable!" and I'd just roll my eyes. @IronFilm is this something you also see across lots of reviews? In a way it's like filming in RAW and then saying the camera footage looks "too grey - not even usable!!".

  7. I think you are in a near impossible situation to be honest. None of the cameras you mention are great in all of your needs. The EVA1, GH5, neither have good AF. So your Gimbal stuff is sort of iffy. But they can do your HFR pretty well. Good enough resolution with a good enough Codec on both. I just don't see how the Kinefinity could work at all. And to what camera to use as a B would either. Just because 4k one is using the same sensor as the GH5 does not mean the Color Science will be close. I really doubt this new P4K is going to match those two cameras having the same sensor either, you know it won't or having good AF at all. The Pk4 on paper might be better being the A Cam for a Cine Look! And the Sony FS5 mk II and the a7 mk III to me has the best combo, but you don't seem to be too hot on a FS5. The FS5 mk II is not that much different for the original. But they can both focus well, and have some really good tricks between them. And the new Color Science on the a7 mk III is pretty impressive I think. And then there is Canon. Both C100's, C200 lack a broadcast middle codec. Forced to shoot raw kind of sucks. But is overcame if you buy an external recorder. C300 no DPAF, C300 mk II too dam expensive yet. Canon 5D mk IV is expensive, and kind of suck be honest for the video part of it in 4K crop wise. 120 full HD on the C200 for HFR not shabby. But they both have DPAF so that is a hell of a plus, plus great color science. Not too sure the hate towards a Canon combo. Heck of a lot of stuff has been, and is being done with them. But you are right, the 5D mk IV would not be a dream camera of mine.

  8. It certainly can't hurt! Even learning just the basics is a good skill to have. It will help get the most out of the tools and resources that are available to you, especially if you use something like the TAKSTAR so it sounds nicer. It's something I've personally been working on, and have spent the most time learning.

  9. Its not out yet, it'll be going out very soon. Its a major release, with subtle but absolutely vital changes to both LogC and EC. Both are now approaching the point of perfection. You're right on. A cinema grade should best conform many shots (though not all) by taking the black level to below 5 IRE, per page 8 (resulting in greater contrast). For this video, I wanted to do absolutely nothing The goal being that if you just shoot without WBing (day preset only for day shots, and no post correction), and don't bother to color grade whatsoever, the new EC will deliver a rock solid internal consistency and flawless color. This is as direct & raw a demonstration of Emotive Color as is possible Thanks deezid! Present is on the way

  10. Yes. And the problem is broader than that, just in general people just don't give any time into sound post or bother finding or respecting the skills needed to it Too many directors/producers just leave it up to their visual editor to do it, just doing a tweak here or there to the levels if that. Or nearly just as bad, they *do* attempt to take sound post "seriously" and find someone different dedicated just to the task of sound post. But many producers/directors seem to think just because someone is an expert musician / DJ / music producer / whatever, then they'd be good at sound post! Nope, they're radically different fields. On a proper budgeted film they might have a team of just sound dialogue editors and assistants as part of the wider sound post team. (just look at the credits for the size of the sound post teams, often bigger than for the visual edit!! If you exclude CGI etc. Just out of my own curiosity I thought I'd go double check my gut feeling on this by looking at half a dozen of the most recent on IMDB's top 100. And yup, in every case the post sound department is a little bit larger than the editorial department! Of course I'm not counting VFX people here, which is a HUGE number on modern films!! But then again I'm not counting the music department either, which can be a length credit list for some films) It is like thinking a photographer would be a good cinematographer! lol. Or visa versa. Yes, they have some overlap with their skills, but in the end they're each their own deeply specialized fields and are totally different to each other overall. And you're just taking a pot luck random shot at luck as to if one will be competent at the other (and you're extremely unlikely either will be great at the other's job, but until they get some experience under their belt first). Unfortunately I've lately been hit over and over again with experiencing crap craptastic sound post, quite demoralizing when I put all this work into crafting the most golden possible sound files I can under the conditions of the shoot. But of course at wrap I then must hand them over, and it is out of my control. Only to much later on see and hear the final product, which leaves me wondering wtf happened??

  12. @Sage, you've definitely turned the GH5 into a different camera with this work, you're a magician, very well done! This update makes the GH5 look like a £15k + camera. At first, I was struggling with the Gha LUT as I was getting a lot of red in my images, but from the later version and my increased obsessive approach to better white balance, I've been getting much better results, and I'm now using it pretty much exclusively. Not been using my own LUTS at all. I've been making my own personal "quick looks" with extra styling using the LUT, wondered if you've thought of making some for your product?

  13. Thanks ! I have both the BMPCC and the BMMCC and I have the mosaic filter on the pocket. It is a necessity to me. I'd like to buy one for the BMMCC as well but it's so expensive I got away without it in this very video thanks to vintage glass wide open and diffusion... Thank you ! For the light being diffused. It actually was I used a Tiffen Black Pro Mist 1/4, it is very nice to get those highlights spill all over the place ! (Kidzrevil also uses thoses filters extensively) The filter combined with the use of vintage lenses wide open (almost all the time if I remember correctly) soften the image quite a bit. I used a Yashicha 55mm macro lens and a canon FD 28mm. But it is true that blackmagic images have an analog feel to them. I agree with cantsin, it surely has to do with the lack of "over processing"/NR and having a great uncompressed codec.

  15. The Black Magic cameras all seem to share a similar look and feel with how they handle light. It is very nice, almost like they have put a diffuser over the sun. There seems to be nothing harsh about the image. What is it about their cameras that creates this effect? Is it the DR? Colour science? High bitrate (either prores or raw)? I really want to own a camera that has this look but my style of film-making relies heavily on stabilisation, zoom lenses, etc so they're just not the right tool for the job. Nice video - I particularly like the fun / different editing style!

  16. Looks great @Sage. I'd love to see a graded version with a bit more weight and contrast. Colour looks spot on apart from that though. Is this the newest version you've released publicly?

    Sony a7 III discussion

In a way that's a side effect of the large aperture lenses - those things are so fat it's more like the lens is squishing your fingers against the grip instead of the other way around!!

  18. I like they had the CS3e in that video. Love my Sanken CS3e, sometimes it is pure magical, but this (the DPReview video) shows how even the greatest mic is going to be terrible if in a bad position at a bad location!

  20. What I recall is 99% of people that complained about media issues didn’t use cards from BMD’s list. I know that they also struggled to keep up with the SSD list because it takes a while to certify media and the manufacturers were constantly changing the performance. I vaguely recall one of the SSD drives that WAS recommended wouldn’t work when they went to the next generartion of the same branded media. That’s not on BMD. It is why they changed to CFAST though even though everyone seems to think SSD are the perfect solution and always work. Go look on BMD’s forums at the number of complaints over SSD’s with the original BMCC. I personally worry about USB-C as a port for reliable use. I would hope someon comes out with a cage or mount that locks that plug down. I’ll be sticking to CFAST. JB

  21. ^ The fact that a camera so small can produce an image so nice is pretty outstanding. Very filmic. Also found this video looking for bmmcc stuff. Looks like he shoots a color chart does some stuff in resolve. He also uses the RAWLite internal Moire/IR cut filter. Has anyone used any of the internal IR Cut/Moire filters? I just picked up the pocket camera again and want to try to one of those. Looking at pistol grip rigs. This is kind of goofy, but the weight on the bottom is probably nice. It's very difficult to find a heavy pistol grip. Someone should make a pistol grip battery handle. Maybe something that just takes a couple Canon batteries.

  22. Hi guys ! Just wanted to share a short piece I shot with my BMMCC during a sunny afternoon in Paris !

  23. Yeah but if you buy one with the DPAF in it, which I think is a no brainer, it is still not cheap. To me if you want a good look go back and re buy the BMPCC. Heck I have seen them for 450 bucks as of late. Now that is a image. And No I said I would not take a GH5, a GH5s yes. But I can't afford a GH5s and a Speedbooster that you sort of need to make it great. I will be doing good to buy the PK4. I have given thought to selling all my Sony stuff, lenses and all. But I do like the FF look it gives. For what I do I think the P4K might work out well. The C100 would just draw to damn much attention in this day and age for me. The Panny AF100 I had taught me that. I look like a dirty old man, well I guess I am, so I am tired of people thinking I am shooting their kids, etc.. It is damn hard to shoot video in this day and age as a old man by themselves in a public place. Damn near impossible now for me. I now have a Pony Tail damn near to my ass. So I look like either a Biker, or a Pedophile LoL Take your pick. Hell both at the same time, how about that! ☹️

  24. Samsung returning to produce sensors for the camera manufacturers makes a lot of sense. I doubt the major brands enjoy being dependent on Sony (an increasingly aggressive competitor) and would 'prefer' to buy from an 'independent' manufacturer. In that respect Samsung returning to make cameras would actually be counterproductive because they would, like Sony, become a competitor rather than independent supplier. Ultimately I think Sony's success in the camera business will come at a cost to their (camera) sensor business. I see a lot of the brands moving from Sony when they eventually get some decent competition either from Samsung, Tower Jazz or whoever.

  25. Hasselblad calls it medium format, Fuji calls it medium format, Phase One calls it medium format, Pentax calls it medium format, Sony calls it medium format. Leica calls 30x45mm medium format. If you think it's not it's fine, what do all those manufacturers know

  27. Looks like the Micro is already going down in price on the second hand market. I got one for under $700. This is my first test, also my first time shooting Raw. Love this little camera. My Micro and Pocket should compliment each other well.
