Who would pay twice the price if the new BM Pocket 4K had Canon DPAF?
webrunner5 and 2 others reacted to kye for a topic
How do these adapters work with multiple AF points and things like eye-detect AF. Do they allow all the smart focusing modes, or just a limited AF mode like a simple centred AF point or equivalent? People pay a lot for 4K, and considering that a shot out of focus is basically a 240p or worse video file, I'd say that you're not understanding what is at stake. Most of the vloggers I watch have mentioned that they bought their main cameras with their own money. Maybe they get a second much cheaper one 'on loan' but that's the minority. I think assuming that people are 'on the take' is easy to assume, but may not be true. Your point is well made and I totally agree, however there are quite a number of elitist ivory-tower snobs on here who insist that unless you're shooting in controlled lighting conditions on a set with a crew of dedicated people that you're basically not a real film-maker and you don't even deserve the soft 1080 that Canon gives you. They don't say it explicitly, but it's behind many of the posts here. Its been strongly implied that if I want better quality home or holiday videos then I need to: buy a cinema camera, hire a sound tech with a boom mic, learn to manually focus (including sporting events), control my DR via lighting and modifiers, use a tripod, and do multiple takes.. instead of asking for a DSLR sized camera with good IQ, reliable AF, audio recording and processing advances from this century, IBIS / OIS, and being able to enjoy myself while recording a clip.3 points -
The last few years I have used selectively, touch AF in my Samsung cameras, and some form of AF (never AF-C, touch screen/touch button always) in C100mkII/C300 and C200 lately. Even though manual focus consists of 90% of my work, it is a feature I would pay more to have and definitely worths more to me than e.g IBIS, or other stuff. Touch focus especially is liberating, can't really see any negative at all. I didn't vote, because I do not believe this BM camera is competitive to any real hybrid camera, or even the aforementioned Canon ones, and I do not believe that is as simple as a "double the price" question. A C series camera is a lot more, and a true APS-C hybrid like my NX1 is a lot more but on a different sense and directio . I probably will buy a BM4K, but it won't replace any of the current cameras I use.2 points

Post photos of your anamorphic rig!
webrunner5 and one other reacted to Teemu for a topic
Me, my crew and my gear in extreme conditions (-24 celsius). I don’t have better images from my setup but I could take one someday at the studio. GH5 with modified FM Lens (Kowa 8z inside) minolta pancake 45 2.8 taking lens, smallhd focus monitor, some different branded rig parts. I am quite satisfied with this setup. GH5 and image stabilization with anamorphic lenses is just great! Really like that I can do even rough handheld work with my anamorphic setup with a great results! Detecting the Start button is hit again before the timer expires is an easy logic to include in the script which would restart the process and do a remote delete of the camera file. Changing frame rate could be a toggle switch between two file formats but that would mean the camera would have to be wifi controlled as well as the card so would need a small router which is no big issue really. File can be auto uploaded to a website and the URL presented as a QR code on the display screen when the clip has been replayed so they can retrieve it. Simpler to implement then letting them enter an address and clears the booth faster for the next visitor. File would need to be transcoded though to keep space requirements down but can be script driven into ffmpeg or similar Thats probably a hack too far for me and the Pi1 point

Who would pay twice the price if the new BM Pocket 4K had Canon DPAF?

This is exactly why I suspect we will see many returns and lightly used examples on eBay. People expect convenience and many will be disappointed when they learn this camera is going to require extra effort to get the results they are after.1 point -

Well that was a pretty ballsy statement LoL. ? I think the original question Should have been, Would you pay a Decent amount more, not say Double. I would have Voted Yes on that question, but Double, that is a Lot. Nah. You can buy the original C100 here in the USA for as little as 1100 dollars. I have seen the ones with the DPAF in them for 1500 to 1600 Dollars at times. That is not much more than the 4K BMPCC. Sure it doesn't have 4K, well it does LoL, but we are talking a pretty damn nice camera here. For weddings, Corporate I am buying that camera.1 point -

I'm going to go out on a limb and say it'll be worse than Canon but better than RED or Arri1 point -
I think this is a very salient point in that the only camera its realistically going to be a swap out replacement for is one of BM's own ones. Its a better Pocket (though not if you need the form factor) or BMCC but despite it having a stills button its still in the same ballpark of being a more specialist device.1 point

I'd definitely pay a lot more. Or more likely for the new Canon mirrorless if/when they get that right.1 point

They're all shill accounts and its costing s much money for the pay per clicks so thats why I've had to cancel my Adobe subscription to pay for them1 point -
Thanks. I asked because I randomly watched a YT review of one just the other day and the guy was using a super vintage lens with swirly bokeh for a portrait stills session and the AF-S was quite impressive. It wasn't lightening fast, but it was still perhaps half-a-second and it was obviously phase detect because it just went from where it was to the focus point and pretty much stopped dead, no hunting or anything. Considering the lens was completely manual it was really quite surprising.1 point

I'm going to sell the Sigma 19mm. Sharpness and overall look is top notch, really on par with Sigma 18-35 Art (at least @f5.6), and that means a lot! But it has two and a half shortcomings: 1. Bad manual focus ring (fly-by-wire, slippery) 2. Very fast, completely quiet AF, but, and that's the main problem, it breaths or hunts: background permanently and annoyingly focusses and defocusses, no matter the aperture, no matter the AF setting. Does so not all the time, but you won't notice the behavior on the display. 2½. Too short and lightweight to balance properly on Zhiyun Crane V1 without additional base plate.1 point

Hunches are fine when declared as so. The problem is when people state their hunches as fact.. If we deleted all the posts that were speculation, opinion, rampant imagination, and fighting over Canon 1080p and colour science, etc there would only be a small amount of content remaining here!!1 point

Thanksfully I am French. But the video is BS. The guy himself says he has absolutely no clue what Sony is preparing as it so well kept secret in Japan1 point

Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K
kye reacted to Savannah Miller for a topic
13 stops is a manufacturer rating. Some cameras have more DR despite the same numbers because they may round 12.5 to 13, or some cameras more confidently capture that range better than others too. Kinefinity claims 14 stops on their Terra 4K camera as well as on their Mavo 6K camera. But does the Terra 4K have remotely the same dynamic range as the Mavo 6K? No it does not. Likewise they claimed 16 stops in the "golden 3K" mode on the Terra 6K, but did it really have a noticeable 2 stops more? No it did not. "Stops" of dynamic range are just claims that anyone can make and not have to back up with evidence. Wouldn't it be easier if blackmagic just went and said it has 13 stops so it's about the same as the original pocket? It could be 1/2 stop less, but just doesn't market well to sell a cinema camera with a DR downgrade. Notice how RED nowhere in their marketing ever claimed that Helium had less dynamic range than Dragon even though that was definitely true?1 point -

From my own point of view, I voted No to the specific question of would you pay twice the price of the camera rather than do I not want it at all. I can imagine others did as well so I wouldn't take anyone voting No to be a definitive indication of their rejection of AF. We're already taking a (considered) leap of faith buying this camera without seeing a single frame of real footage to then compound it by doubling the price for the addition of a technology that BM have no track record of implementing even if they did have access to it. In some parallel universe where they could just flick a switch and have it implemented as well as Canon does ? Yeah, I'd pay some extra for a bit of that certainty in performance. But then if you look at the countless posts and debates all over the internet about AF performance, I have to say that it would throw up more problems than it solved for BM if it wasn't implemented perfectly from the get go and I'd sooner them focus (ho ho) on doing what they do best which is the image itself.1 point

BenEricson reacted to DBounce for a topic
I suspect most of the people that said no have not used a Canon camera with DPAF. Having this feature does not mean you have to use it, but on a gimbal it sure helps keep the weight/complexity down.1 point -
You thought wrong. Youtube tests show it is atrocious. Not so much. For me, the C200 weight and size make it a no go even at 1000$ for what I do. If BM 4K had C200 AF I would get it over any day. Depends on your use. The results of the poll are interesting. Half of the people would. And when you consider that most of the people who said no is because they just use manual focus, this poll shows how much important AF is for people in video and that they are ready to pay for it. This is why so many vloggers pay 6K for the 1DXII, for Full Frame 4K60P with good AF. This is why people like Casey Neistat prefer shitty 1080p quality over amazing GH5 quality. Because AF in video becomes that much useful and important. How many manual focus stills camera sell this day VS AF stills camera? When you consider manual focusing in video is more difficult than in photo, it's not hard to see why manual focusing cameras are dead. Expect 90% of the people who said "no" to this poll to use AF in all their video in 2 years from now.1 point

So you are telling me that all the Canon C cameras that have DPAF in them you would Never buy because the have AF?? That all of the newer Canon Cine cameras are total shit because they Have AF in them. Interesting. No Pro would be caught dead with one is what you are implying..1 point -
I have this lens and its AF performance is slightly better than the other small Sigma primes that I have for the A6500 (the 30mm f1.4 and the 60mm f2.8). Having said that, when I was testing it in the kitchen it decided to activate the face detect when it spotted the deep fat fryer. But thats the modern non judgemental way I suppose.1 point

Just a quick update on my experience with the sigma mc-11. Some of the lenses I only had a few minutes to try Yongnuo 35mm f2: Doesn't autofocus at all. That 35mm f2 look is awesome though. Canon 50mm f1.8 stm: AF-S works well. Didn't have enough time to compare it against the Sony 50mm f1.8 Fe. The size of the adapter and lens is just slightly bigger than the Sony lens. Sigma 17-35mm f2.8-4: I've been using the Nikon mount version of this lens for a couple years on Nikon, panasonic, canon and now Sony cameras. One of my faves. The canon mount version on the sigma mc-11 does seem to attempt to autofocus but there's a big problem - the aperture stays locked at the smallest opening. Not sure if it was a fault of the particular lens. Canon 24-85mm f3.5-4.5: af-s and c works well in stills. Continuous doesn't work in video. The focus ring is not smooth and has some play, making manual focus quite difficult. Other than that, it's a great lens with plenty of character (flaring, slight distortion, slight chromatic aberration). I'm not sure if I'm keeping it yet because of the manual focus problems. It would be perfect otherwise.1 point

Awesome - my concern was if they knew what they were getting but if they're into it then that will be really cool. I like it when people do something a little different The combination of that song (the amount of style and how rhythmic it is) and your editing and shooting style will be something to see - your reel looked good and had a few cool moments where the visuals matched the music, but not so many that it distracted too much. I'm looking forward to seeing what you come up with ?1 point

WOW...so B&H/Luxli have quietly released their 1X1 RGBW light (Luxli Timpani) . It's available on July 2nd. At $1000 seems like a reasonable price for a 1x1 RGBW panel with such a hight CRI color. The question for most people is, should you buy multiple Luxli cellos or 1 Timpani. Cello retails for $400. But It goes one sale some times at $300 or $350. 4 cellos at sale is about $1200 which a few more LED than a Timpani but basically close enough. So 4 Cellos will give you more flexility, the Timpani might be easier to deal with, just having one light to worry about. Either defuse it, or bounce, etc. I guess Ideal case you have one Timpani couple of Cellos and one COB light source. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1353086-REG/luxli_timpani_1x1_1x1_rgb_studio_light.html1 point

Wow. So, not a competitor to YT then.... well, unless there's data suggesting that people are now moving to vertical mobile use? I don't say that to be funny - I remember watching an early talk about how mobile was taking over PCs and the guy put up a huge number on the screen (it was over a thousand) and said that the number was how many people had used eBay on their mobile phone to buy a Ferrari. As I am a bit of a laggard with tech I was shocked, but now I've caught up so it doesn't seem so silly. Maybe it's one of those things that the kids are doing and we don't know about yet? In a way vertical video makes sense because people are taller than they are wide, and most short-lifespan social media video contains only one person.1 point

I just had a look at these camera, there are no price tags but they are looking like industrial cameras which are quite costly I suppose? To the Sonys and Panasonics I have access already and since it's only a small project, the investment probably won't be worth-it, at least not in the first stage. If the idea works out well it might be possible to change the system but for the beginning it would be the best to go with the GH5 I think. Yes, that's exactly the plan. Interesting though that you experienced something like that already hehe1 point

or put another way - would you buy a C200 instead of the BMPCC 4k if it was 1/2 the price.........1 point
-
Beautifully put. I am a little fatigued by people nitpicking about a camera that is nothing short of a miracle at that price. In fact, option-wise, it's never been easier to be a filmmaker. I suppose one of the downsides of a forum largely focused on tech is, it becomes a vortex of endless demands and a mindset that the right camera is never in the present, but at a near future, just around the corner.1 point

Opinion Poll: Sony A6300 / A6500
kye reacted to Mark Romero 2 for a topic
Have fun and enjoy. Gary Friedman might have some free videos up on youtube about the a6300 / a6500. He often explains the "hidden" features of cameras. https://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=gary+friedman+a6300 Maartech has good videos on "video settings" so you might want to check those out as well. Learn how to set up the Fn menu and the M1 and M2 settings. Without those, you will go crazy. For 4K video, you need a 64GB card.Don't get a 32GB card (or smaller). It won't work. Forgot to mention that. One of the quirks. Welcome to Sony land... I use a Sony SDXC U3 10 95MB/s card (that's what it says on it... heck if I know what it means). If you are ok with manual focus and want to pick up a cheapo minolta lens, look for an LA-EA1 (about $50 used), and then you could put a Minolta AF lens on it and it will read the EXIF data for IBIS on it. Don't confuse Minolta AF lenses with minolta MC or MD lenses, which are older manual focus lenses (nice, but they required different adapters). The placement of the video record button will drive you crazy. There are little clear rubber buttons that you can buy that will stick on to any of your camera buttons. I don't have a link to them. I keep meaning to buy them and put them on the Fn button and the record button. If you are going to be using your Nikon manual lenses, then you want to set 1 of your custom buttons to punching it to confirm focus. As good as the focus peaking is on the a6300 / a6500, I find that punching in is still more accurate for critical focus. The 35mm f/1.8 OSS is supposed to be a good lens. You will probably get a lot of mileage out of it. You might be able to rig up a very lightweight dummy battery to use handheld / on a monopod. It should allow you to shoot longer and (theoretically) help reduce the likelihood of overheating since many people claim that the heat from the internal battery accelerates overheating. Pulling the LCD screen away from the body reportedly helps with overheating. I saw one person who had a rig with a small fan on it. He says it works well. a6500 doesn't have a headphone jack... Here is something to just tease you a bit: A lot of people like the AndyCine monitors. I would avoid the IKAN monitor. It is supposed to be nice but it isn't all that much bigger than the LCD on the a6500. Hope this helps. Despite the quirks, and the naysayers, lots of people use the a6300 / a6500 for videos and they create some really nice stuff. Check out Brandon Li's stuff. Or just search youtube for "a6500 cinematic" and you will come up with lots of nice stuff.1 point -
Final update here: I've purchased a used "Excellent Condition" Sony A6500 from Adorama. Saved a couple hundred bucks from new price. Funnily enough, I bought my current camera, a d5300 refurb from Adorama. With a 30 day return policy I'm going to give it a go. Settling on the 35mm 1.8 OSS Sony and a Lens Adapter for my two Nikon Primes. Should be a fun next couple of weeks!1 point

I think its just a big button job isn't it? Person comes in, presses button, shakes hair for a few seconds and then it autoplays on a TV. So a button into a Raspberry Pi (either connected to a GPIO or a bluetooth key or midi button/footswitch), when it picks up the trigger it starts the camera, counts to however many seconds are needed, stops the camera, requests the files.html from the FlashAir, pulls out the last file name in that list, fires up mplayer with that file name, HDMI out of Pi to TV and job done. Funnily enough, I actually experienced a slow-mo photo booth in Tokyo last month at a Sasmung event for the S9. Which I had completely forgot about ! So, the alternative answer to this might well be to use a Samsung S91 point

Today was less than ideal ... yesterday I found a Bluejay nestling in the yard ... had fallen 12 meters from a nest in a Chinese Pistachio tree. Barely alive ... nursed him all night and drove 40 miles this morning to deliver him to a wildlife rescue mission ... he will be there for weeks in rehabilitation learning what his parents would have imparted to him in days. Came home to find his nest lying at the bottom of the tree. There is a perceptable sadness in the garden this afternoon ... we have spent 20 years cultivating a place of rest and one that is somewhat protected from the vagaries of the wild ... although we routinely have predators that enter from the periphery. Thought I would film a bit of the garden ... seems a bit melancholy ... reflection on our loss ... and yes in view of all the evil in this world it is minor in comparison. All done with the Canon M50 ... Andrew's EOSHD C Log PP. https://vimeo.com/275941224 Password: Daysend Sorry it is a bit long. Regards, Bob1 point

This is the Wooden Camera Small DSLR Accessory Kit ... however if you do not need the quick release tripod plate with 15mm rod support you can get the a7/A9 cage which appears to be on sale at B&H at the moment. I assume knowing WC the can modify the base for the Canon M50. The side rod which connects the top and base comes in three sizes so you can use the cage for mirrorless, Canon 5D and 1DX bodies ... I have all three of the rods as they are one of the cheapest parts of the system. Very rigid and will support a ton of stuff. External monitor recorder, follow focus and matte box ... etc.1 point

I hear the "views/likes" point being made a lot lately. The worst porn videos have millions of views, and we all know that the vast majority of the humam population is oblivious to some (most) of the best movies/paintings/musicians. All my favorite bands together, all their albums and songs ever, have probably less views than the last Justin Bieber video, and I do not even know one song of the guy. Views and/or popularity, do not justify everything. Disclaimer: This opinion is irrelevant with the above video. There are a couple Black Mirror episodes and one in The Orville about popularity, social media and the new challenges they create in the new world.1 point
