  1. Hi guys , today we did quick test  with Nikon D5200 , Samyang 85mm f/1.4 and Carl Zeiss Anamorphot 63x2 . Unfortunately after few minutes  we had some issue with SD card . https://vimeo.com/59931000
  2.   My question is : with that kind of result, do I need a GH3 and mainly an Iscorama 36 ? I'm not so sure now for the Isco ;) Could it be better with the 0.4 achromatic diopter ? Please tell me your opinion :)   https://vimeo.com/59844561   GH1 hacked 720P 50 baby Berthiot Hypergonar anamorphic lens 1.75X Planar 45mm f/2  Hartbley Super-Rotator tilt and shift 80mm f/2.8 lens Tokina 0.5 diopter Light Craft variable ND filter   Premiere pro CS6 light CC (levels)   Maybe the ultimate combo for the baby Hypergonar anamorphic lens : the Planar 45mm f/2. As least for me. I've found for a reasonable price this Planar lens that I used to have few years ago on my Contax G1 rangefinder. I had great memories on that lens and sold it a few years ago for money reasons. Here it backs, for 200€. Popular Photography magazine said in 1994 that it is the sharpest lens ever made. Effectively this lens is very sharp, also at f/2. So I decide to test it with my (new, again) baby Berthiot Hypergonar 1.75X anamorphic lens, a very small and light (51,7 grams !!!!). For the close up I used my new Tokina 0.5 diopter. I just watched the export of this movie on my TV and I'm very pleased of the result, no vignetting, no distortion, and very sharp result to my opinion, with the Tokina in the close shot, and without in the wide shot. The very firsts shots (with the blurry corners) have been taken with a tilt and shift lens, the Hartblei Super-Rotator 80mm f/2.8 (Nikon mount). It is miraculously working with the baby Hypergonar, small vignetting when the lens is tilting, because it's a 80mm... It's hard to use because it was for me the very first time shooting with a tilt and shift lens. I surely have to practice, that's why I edited just few shots.    All this was shot with my old hacked GH1 in 720P. I've received few days ago the new GH3. I will do test with this combo soon.   4. Would you recommend me a good 35mm taking lens that can go wide open but still sharp enough for use with a Kowa 8z on a gh2. What would be the sharpest lens possible for that combination? What would be the best/reasonably cheap option? Any recommendations accepted. What hack would you use for sharpest image. Sedna Aq1? Thanks!

Also posted this here to get others opinions on my situation!   I'm Matej, a filmmaker from Slovenia, and I am slowly trying to get into the anamorphic video shooting, since I love the classic cinema look, that can be achieved. But since no one in Slovenia is actually shooting anamorphicly, it is almost impossible to find any anamorphic lens here in Slovenia. Somehow, luckily, a friend of mine, who collects vintage lenses, happens to have some anamorphic lens which he is willing to sell some of them to me. Now here is the main situation: He has some rathenowers 48/2x and 80/2x, and the 2 versions of Isco Gottingen Anamorphotic 2x kiptars, one with the focus ring and 2 of the versions without one.   One without: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sicovdplas/ One with it: http://cameramate.com/images/s_15909.jpg   I am now asking for advice, which one of the 2 versions would be easier to use with a DSLR (in my case 600D and a 7D)? I suspect, that the focusless version is easier, because I can just focus with my lens, if I get a couple of close up filters.   Another problem is that the 2 focusless versions have lots of dust in the lens itself so I'm wondering if that is a huge dealbreaker or can it be cleaned?   Cheers!

You maybe know I have sold my baby Hypergonar in a combo with Voigtlander 40mm...    Now I have a new anamorphic set I have to introduce to you :    Carl Zeiss Planar 45mm f/2 (some people say the best 35mm lens ever made) + my new baby Hypergonar (sorry guys, I swear I don't have an "baby Hypergonar tree") + Tokina 0.5 diopter   I've shot some clip today and the result are really promising ! Movie soon, stay tune :)   and the cherry on the cake... A friend of mine loan me a 80mm f2.8 Hartbley Super Rotator Tilt Shift lens... I try quickly the baby hypergonar on it and it seems to work, without vignetting in the TS operations ! Hi!    I wanted to try to learn to shoot with anamorphic lenses.    I have Andrew´s guide, but i´m not sure what to do in post with the footage?   I got a Sankor 16F attached with a clamp to a Canon 50mm 1.4 FD on a GH2.   Do i need to do anything on the camera before i start shooting? I use Final Cut Pro X in post, but im not sure how to handle the anamorphic footage?   Can any of you experts out there point me in the right direction?   Thanks.

Hello everyone, We are planning to shoot a very low budget feature film this summer and I have some questions on the camera set we will use and I hope you can help me on some of the following: 1. The 16:9 sensor on the GH2 + a 2x anamorphic adapter produces a final stretched anamorphic aspect of 3.55. Which would result in (1920x1080)*(2)= 3840x1080. Instead of doing the decompression from 2x, I want to interpret the shot as if pixels would be 1.333 or 1.4587. I know it keeps the image still a little deform but I think I like the look. Whats your technical and/or creative take on it? (SEE IMAGES BELOW) 2. We would project it on standard 2k (2048×1080) DCP cinemas and the final cut would fit into it with a 2048x858 (2.39:1) size movie. Am I right? or does it work in another way? 3. I am currently using Sedna AQ1 for max detail against anamorphic softening against big screen projection. Do you think it will hold enough? Would you sharpen in post? Whats you recommend any other hack? Given this 3 points which would be your opinion on this process? Have any of you seen any gh2 anamorphic content projected in 2k dcp? How does it stand? Thanks for your help! P.D. Anyone selling a Kowa 16-h (8z) In order not to be so limited with the 16D in lens minimum mm´s?

  15. i shot this last night. used the smc takumar m42 55mm/1.8 with a sankor compact anamorphic. all shot at pretty high iso's, mostly 12800, but some shots were at lower. there's 2k mjpeg, 1080p/24fps and 720p/60fps (@24 fps) all in there, i used driftwood's sedna b matrix/patch, because i grabbed my bag on the way to the pier; i would've preferred to use the canis majoris night patch and 2fps mjpeg, but oh well. no color correction/grading   https://vimeo.com/57121092

With the 43mm-52mm step up ring included, you can use it alone with 52mm filters.   The Hypergonar begin to be sharp from f2.8, very good at f4 and perfect at f5.6. With the diopter you can shoot at f1.4 with sharp result. It's in good condition due to its age. Very tiny dust, no haze. I'm filming with the baby Hypergonar for month now, and I can tell you this is such a good lens. You can watch all the test I've done with it in the link bellow. As you can see I've tried it on several lenses (Fujian 35mm f1.6, Canon FD 50mm f1.8, Holga Lomo f8, SLR Magic Cine lens 50mm f0.95 and Voigtlander 40mm f1.4) and the combination with the Voigtlander is the ultimate set for me. 1.75X squeeze is also perfect, wider than the common 1.5X, and not to much wider than the 2X anamorphic lens. I apply 57,14% scale in Adobe Premiere.   The baby Hypergonar gives very beautiful anamorphic flares and stretched bokeh.   A useful comment from Alan about this Berthiot 1.75X anamorphic lens : "you have the smallest hypergonar lens ever made and one of the last designs of the great french man. Professor Henri Chrétien signed over the rights to his fantastical optical invention Hypergonar to Twentieth Century-Fox in 1952,he was legally bound not to develop commercial scope lens or work with any other studios. or sell the optics commercially. This beauty was the only tiny amateur cinemascope lens he could legally make and could only be sold in france and her colonies :sad: it was made for amateur standard 8mm film cameras. his friends at the Société technique d'Optique et de Photographie (s.t.o.p). At first said it was impossible to scale a cinemascope lens down to this size,and make a usable system. Chrétien went too work and made this tiny gem a beauty. Hi everyone    I´m a young video director from Madrid-spain, (www.MauriDGaliano.com)   I want to share with this great community my passion for  vintage Anamorphic Lenses.   I´ve been reading this forum a lot of times, but is the first time that i write something.   Allow me the honor to share my last Anamorphic video, a Drum cover for the Artist "Deivhook",the best Drummer in Spain.   http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=13zPG1ebHlo     I shoot this video with my basic set: Panasonic GH2 Flowmotion v2.2 + fd50mm 1.8 + Bolex Anamorphot 16/32 1.5x.   The Bolex is the little girl of all my lenses...the "jewel of the crown",   The  rare 1.5x ratio suits perfect for almost everything, and its super-easy to make the double focus with it, in this video theres no flares, but this lens have the best flares  i´ve seen. Flare sooo easy, blue-deeply flares like Panavision C series. Mindblowing.   Now i have a clamp, from VidAtlantic,but im interested in upgrade to Redstan, i´ve seen that redstan have a custom Clamp for the little brother of my lens, the 8/19 1.5x, And im asking myself if he has one custom clamp for my lens.   Someone can give me the contact of Redstan?   I hope that you enjoy the video!   If someone have a question about the lens, ask me!   PD: I already knows that i suck writing in english, sorry!

On top of my low light high ISO tests I also tested my Sankor Anamorphic 2x lens.  One thing I really learned is that anamorphics need to be focused at a specific distance to get the desired effect.  Of course I only realize this after I do this, so I'll try and do another test later.  Focus is very difficult, next time I'll bring an external monitor.  The 100mm Macro surprisingly was the most difficult to focus.  I think it has a much shallower depth of field than either of the FD 1.2L lenses.   http://youtu.be/U5Oh-IBFZyY   http://youtu.be/eL0HesvFrPc   http://youtu.be/zEk-7OEkVAU   http://youtu.be/ZaRwD_L0n-g   Out of all these tests it's clear that there are limitations with both cameras.  Here are some notes:   - EX TELE mode is much improved on the GH3.  There is more detail and less noise, although it is still very noisy.  Not sure I can call it "grain" but if you really need to use it you can.  But I would still go with a prime over EX TELE mode, even if it is a great lens like the Leica 25mm.  GH2 clearly is bad in EX TELE mode, worse in very low light - Detail is excellent for both cameras.  I still think the GH2 has more but only by a little.  Again focusing is critical. - GH3 clearly has more dynamic range and retains more details especially in the shadows.  The last video you can see more tiles in the shadows at the left of the image. - GH3 can shoot more flat and retain more color detail too.  The last video I upped the saturation to 150% to match the GH2.  You can't go far at all with the GH2, it is so baked into the codec. - GH3 is 2/3 of a stop brighter at high ISOs.  However the codec isn't great for low light.  I think the 50Mbits IPB is better than the 72Mbits All-I for low light.  Just the noise grain is better and easier to remove.  In bright conditions they are about the same.   I prefer the GH3 over the GH2 for usability and for the image.  I'll still use my GH2s because they are still very stellar cameras.  But I think there are many improvements in the GH3 that overall make it a better camera.
  20. Hi,   i've a general question. Is there any use of filming in MJPEG mode if i use an anamorphic adapter such as the century optix 1.33x?   Also, i tryed to switch my camera (after hacking it) to VGA Mode but i just could not find the MJPEG 1920x720/30p - what am i doing wrong here? Might the patch didnt work or is it just, thats not the VGA Mode and im trying the wrong video mode - which one is the right one?   Thanks for your help Emin
  21. Hello all.     I was curious if anyone has tested the Bolex 8/19/1.5X Anamorphot with a Canon 5D mark III.  Please correct me if I'm wrong, but I've only found evidence of the lens paired with the GH2, 7D and BMCC.  Many thanks in advance for any help on this topic.

Finally put my GH3 through it's paces and I got my anamorphics too.  I shot the local teen group EMKE Hawaii live at Hard Rock Cafe Honolulu's 25th Anniversary celebration.  But to shoot all anamorphic, well you can call me crazy I guess.  Shooting dual focus is no joke, and I really had to change my thinking in terms of zooming and framing.  The videos below are from the middle of the set when I finally got a hang of it.  Well sort of, some shots are still soft.  I can say that I'm happy with the performance of the Sankor and Eiki 16D (pretty much the same lens).  Both are sharp if focused correctly.  The LA7200 I could never get good results past 50mm, so I just use it wide angle, in this case 17mm.  Overall the GH3 works very well, and I think I have a good combination here.   Wide Angle Shot - Panasonic GH2 w/ Flow Motion v2.02 hack, Panasonic 14-42mm kit lens @ 17mm, Panasonic LA7200 Anamorphic lens, ISO 1250, F4.5, 1/80sec, Vivid (-2,-2,-2,-2)   Medium Shot - Panasonic GH2 w/ Flow Motion v2.02 hack, Canon FD 50mm F1.2L, Eiki 16D Anamorphic lens, ISO 1250, F4.5, 1/80sec, Vivid (-2,-2,-2,-2)   Medium/Close-up Shot - Panasonic GH3, 24P 72mbit MOV, Panasonic 45-200mm lens, Sankor 16D Anamorphic lens, ISO 1250, F4.5-5.6 (zoomed), 1/80sec, Vivid (-3,-5,-4,-5)   http://youtu.be/N2RsGEoWtkM   Edit: Sorry forgot to add that the LA7200 is 1.33x, the Sankor/Eiki are 2x anamorphics.  So I cropped the Sankor/Eiki to fit into a 2.35:1 space.  Sorry no super-wide look, I needed it to match the LA7200.
  23. Ok, Question #1: So I really wanna get out and shoot. Are there any editing tips for Final Cut Pro that can give a nice anamorphic look to a 16:9 frame? Im shooting with 30mm f/1.4 Sigma on 600D Canon. Question #2: I will eventally buy somthing. And I'm a broke student. The Helios 44m 2/58 lens and a cheap anamorphic lens sounds perfect. Any suggestions on the cheapest Anamorphic lens that can fit the Helios? THANK YOU FOR YOUR INPUT !   Peace
