whether its for VFX or resolution or god knows what - it just seems like all the cool kids are doing it.

yeah, cool kids shooting movies with arris these days. us boring farts need to swing around these amateurish dslrs.

I loved your non raw stuff already and you are in the cool kids club anyway no matter if raw or not! :)

Man, you have to do a tutorial on grading V log! Amazing!

I second that. But @64mulford,  you must put deezid at @deezid,  so he can recognize our plead much better! :)

I reposted deezids Americanah trailer in the GX85 thread to show among other posters, how awesome Panasonic Lumix material can look.

Can´t wait to see Andrew´s footage with this powerhouse the GH5 must be. 400mbps will offer perfect quality

for indy and documentary shooters, if GH5 has the same high standard of quality control/mangagement, which the

    production of the GH4 had.

  3. I´d say Panny G7. Has much, much better EVF than GX85! I´d call the GX85 EVF a pain to use due to heavy tearing, gives me a headache after

less than a minute. The display I find too small for me. G7 doesnt have IBIS but a cheapo rig compensates for handheld shooting.

In my opinion the IBIS does not replace a gimbal but is great to have for usual handheld work. But a rig is fine too.

So G7 for much better EVF, large enough display, Cine profiles as a bonus, great handling and up to 100USD less on ebay for used and new ones.

GX85 for its prettyiness, the pretty IBIS, the tactile feel of its beautiful body though a little bit too short for my taste.

  4. So, not many seem to remember, if G7 has more or less resolution than G6.

We know, sensor in G7 is better than G6 but does that go for a better HD picture as well?

For me it would be good enough if G7 and G6 had the same resolving power in HD. Like I said, GX80/85 seems to have less

HD resolution than G6, from what I have seen. Maybe I should test myself a little more instead of bothering you guys :)

Yes Andy, but you shot it in UHD acquisition:)

If the youtube test video is for real, then G7 HD to me seems almost pixel perfect like UHD downsized to HD.

GX80 doesnt. Dpreview testchart doesnt show neither pixel perfect HD for G7, but GX80 has the least resolution.

GX80 does not produce these moires, whereas GH4, G7 and G85 do.

That's because the sensor in the G7 is very very good , its not the same sensor that's in the gh4 , its a totally new design sensor and its also amazing in low light very very little visable noise, the g7 is a superb camera I shot a feature film with 6 of them last year.

Yes, Andy, I remember your post about your movie "Pandora" and your super cool screenshots! That post was awesome with great lens recommendations, as we know it from you:), and cool BTS! You wanna tease us with some teaser footage?

BTW, I had a question for you in the lens thread two days ago, if you wanna check :)

    cheers and thanks!

So is the gx80 the same as g7 or not?

from my experience gx80 has weaker HD than G6, less resolution and more moire.

G7 I cannot tell from my own experience, as it was not my test video.

And I haven´t tested my newly bought G7 yet.

Asking you guys. How is the HD on the G7? The youtube video I posted, seems to show obvious improvements.

I heard the HD is so good they shot the Revenant with a G7 hidden in an Alexa 65 body

Inazuma, didnt you post a video of the GX7 in the yard of spooky soul asylum place? That was a cool video. That GX7 for sure had some serious mojo going.

From the videos on vimeo to me it seems it has the best HD of all Lumix interchangeable cameras. Of course it should sooner

break apart under certain conditions than GH4 footage with the 100/200mbit codec. So maybe was a GX7 in the Alexa body for the Revenant:)

  6. hey guys,

since I just I´ve just got a G7 this weekend for the nice ergos, screen, EVF and for checking out the Cine profiles, I was wondering about its HD resolution.

This test suggests it´s better than G6, which would be pretty awesome.  My GX80 seems of lower HD resolution

than my G6 to me. Pretty nice test this guy did. So in HD G7 seems to have better resolution than G6, which, to

my own superficial testing, has better resolution than GX80 again.

Any findings on that from you guys´ side?

The gx85 produces some very nasty aliasing in 1080p so a lot depends on what you shoot. It's 4K is better as it produces a lot less aliasing and it is more detailed, the difference notices the most when you shoot wide with a deep dof and with lots of fine detail. I use it's 1080p 50p a lot though as I need it to slow down my shots from time to time and in that mode I use fast lenses and shoot with a shallow dof and those look just fine but anytime I need to capture a wide shot with lots of detail I switch to 4K

    hallo,

50p on GX80 could mean half the vertical lines in resolution compared to the 24p mode. So 1080 24p would be much better.

Shouldnt be different from the G6.

  8.

Good point regarding Pana 12-60, doesnt sound like a moving making tool of choice, I mean for fictional short movie pieces.

But still, the promise of an all in one light zoom solution sounds promising, with stabilization and much lighter than a 28-70 full frame glass.

So my question to @andy lee: Andy, can you recommend or say a few nice things about the Leica Elmarit

14 to 50mm with OIS F2.8-3.5, in Four Thirds mount, not mft?

Looks kinda tempting, though it is not a small kit lens anymore.

    cheers

  9. I think GX80 has come a far way color wise. To me first Lumix with pleasing color ooc.

Here is a nice example of color and camerawork with this little gem. Other than the fragile monitor it

has a beautiful solid feel. I don´t know, maybe someone can chim in and tell me, if stabilization

is better with new firmware. Beautiful little cam so far. Kinda torn if I gonna keep it though because

to me the real weakness is the monitor, kinda fragile and pretty small, evf is bad but for filming i´m using

monitor anyway. Here some work I must say showing the GX mojo pretty well. Not my work though:)

I'm working on it now, the G85 is just a little too tall to fit into the G7 cage, by a couple mm. The Smallrig G85 should be out soonish, they have it up for preorder on their site, only $40:

    http://www.smallrig.com/SMALLRIG-Cage-for-Panasonic-Lumix-DMC-G85-G80-1950.html

Pretty looking cage! Maybe I could get one for my G70. And then get a G80 later on. I already got a G6 and a GX80.

Some Lumix GAS going on :) Bought the G70 because of the nice ergos, though tactility of GX80 is outstanding, but just almost too small for my hands and

the GX80 cage from Smallrig is the only pretty one so far but costs 70 USD. So maybe ordering the G80 one could

be a nice thing to do. Thanks for the find!

  11.

    Hallo @andy lee!

Because off you I got a Panasonic G6 and GX80 now. Latter one has beautiful tactile feel, though it´s a about 0.5 - 1inch

to small in height and width for my hands.

G6 has very nice HD, better than GX80 I would state. And bought a G70 last week- to me the perfect ergos for a photo/video hypbrid, but not

the same beautiful tactile feel of the GX80. So because off you I got three Lumix cameras now. I think you "owe" me now some great

pleasure of seeing more screenshots of you film "Pandora". Even better some teaser footage!

Everyone of us wants to see you Nikon 28-70-200 lenses in action with the cool Lumix G7/70 cameras! :)

Of course you don´t owe me anything. It would be the other way around :)

    cheers

As promised, a field test of the Oly 25mm f/1.2 shot on the Lumix G85 and the Fuji 90mm f/2 shot on the Fuji X-T2.

    Hey Jonpais!

Beautiful colors. Fuji comes first but around 50 sec I thought G85 looked just as good as Fuji! 1.27, beautiful! But you´re right, Fuji mojo seems

    hard to beat.

Considering the guy can't clean his lens, or shoot two test shots at the same f-stop, not sure how much I particularly want to trust his results or how he's applying the color grade.  That said, it makes sense to get banding from 8-bit log.

That is funny, fuzzy. Normal. Right? :) Makes uber sense and fun to stick around here and even more keep contributing due to cool people

Really had my fingers firmly crossed for this, but I'm seeing the same cyan/magenta blocking in this video that lead me to sell my GH4. Guess, I will stick with my Blackmagics until something better comes along.

    Hallo Zak,

Martin shot and shoots nice videos on the Lumix range of cameras I think.

For this one he used  CineLike V 0/-5/-5/-5/0, Master Pedestal +10, Luminance Level 0-255 (copy and paste from his description)

As experience has shown, one should not mess with master pedestal. Also, h264 Inter Frame is not a beautiful thing on even surfaces, additionally

very low light didnt help the 150mbit codec neither.

By the way I really liked your CineV and VLog footage, even if it was a GH4 :)

  14.

    Hallo,

I wouldnt  worry about this camera to be too videoish. Important and valid point of yours, of course. We will see in a few days.

For now, good night sleep :)

I have to admit, it really is Not on my Radar at all. Nada. I can think of 3 or 4 older semi pro used cameras that I would buy before it in a heartbeat.

If you say LS300, well, for 2000 USD/EUR and with internal stabi and a great viewfinder and 10bit and higher bitrate, I´d buy that too in a heartbeat.

But that would be the LS500 then:)

Sort of HDR on Steroids! That video was a waste of 2 minutes of my life. And I am running out of minutes!

    Hallo,

to me it seems being the first video to show the big advantage of 10 bit vs 8bit on a Panasonic Hybrid! 8 bit is severly broken after the grade,

whereas 10bit remains the gradation. Have not been able to detect this obvious difference on the GH4 with internal vs external recording.

But as they say, always good to do ones own tests than waiting for others to do the hard testing work:)

Also very nice news from the slashcam testchart: exellent resolution in HD mode up to 60fps, C300 level, better than its older Panasonic silbings.

I must say, color science on the GX80 has greatly improved, first time I would accept footage ooc without grading.

So color should be great too on GH5.

Some nice work here in mixed light and low light

Hey, I played it in 720p on a 27inch display. Even like that it look exellent.

So GH5 definately is  a player in the resolution department. Colors looked adequate not great though. Thanks for posting this video.

It shows some problems in the dark areas. But even on FS700 underexposing SLOG when recording to an Atomos shows chunky pixelation

as well, whereas my G6 on linear space did not. Still the FS700 is the vastly superior imaging machine! Isn´t it. :)

  16. Friendly forum member and contributor @hoodlum posted the DXO Mark score of the EM1 II sensor in the GH5 footage thread.

A sports/noise score of 1300ISO, similar to the Nikon D500. Would love to believe that!

    https://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Olympus-OM-D-E-M1-Mark-II-sensor-review-New-standard

What does that mean for the GH5 in sensor quality and for real life video application? We will see.

Luke Neumanns examples look really promising already.

  17. 15 hours ago, hoodlum said:

The DXOMark results from the E-M1ii also seems to suggest a base ISO of 400 as there is no additional DR at ISO200.

    https://www.dxomark.com/Reviews/Olympus-OM-D-E-M1-Mark-II-sensor-review-New-standard

You kidding, same sports noise score like the Nikon D500, impressive, impossible. Well, maybe I shouldnt believe DXOs sensor measuring with 100% but only with 90% of belief :)

Looks promising regarding the GH5 sensor. Combined with Panasonics clever processing this is gonna give us indeed some nice video quality, even moreso in 10bit AVC Intra.

Thanks a lot, Luke, for providing such great contributions, knowledge, footage and friendliness to this forum.

Last week the DOP of Laconia, a well received BBC TV mini (not the German voiced over talking heads edit!!:) gave us the honour and pleasure to stop by at our school. One of the things he told us how much of a pain shooting on 35mm was and how modern cameras allow you to get away with so much.

He also said, that a lot of what we remember regarding the 35mm look is due to its scanning process and digital projection and distribution.

With the GH5, just don´t go higher than 1250 or 1600 and you will be in wonderland:)

Should probably get moved to the correct forum section

I think it already is and was in the correct section due to its interesting discussion it lead to. Just my opinion. I think, being in the main section is much more grace to this piece and to its discussion. It gave me the opportunity to discover Eds work. His vimeo channel is full of resources and viewing pleasure for the lover of the short film form. Same for instance with Andy Lees post about his work with the Panasonic G7 leading to an insightful discussion on lenses and setup when showing examples of his feature Pandora. By the way @andy lee, when are you going to satisfy our hunger for some teaser footage, in the graceful main section, of course? :)

  19. To my eyes, my G6 HD appears to have more resolution than my GX85s HD, with less aliasing and artificial sharpness on the same settings.

Started to dialing sharpness down from -2 to -5.

Also, from one experience, I got the impression that electronic native lenses might involve some automatic processing to the image.

One note on this, in the GH5 thread someone stated about some native lenses that they produce an artificial outline around oof shapes, sharp edges like cut out pieces, so to say.

The native lens I shot with back then was the 14-45mm. It was a two cam setup of my and my collegues G6, one mounted to the 14-45, the other one with a boosted 28mm FD.

Both lenses were very hard to match in post, even though they were on the same settings. So, maybe some native lenses are key to even more artificial sharpening and rendering

    because of additional processing.

  20. 21 hours ago, Amook said:

@gatopardo Nope, sony f3. I gotta say I love everything but the bulk of the camera. The image even with just the internal recording is so far ahead of anything i've used before. I really liked the xc10 but the quality just drops off a cliff after iso 800, which with the slow lens happens in all but direct sunlight. I think canon tried to over sell the specs and cover up the ghosting which they fixed with a new version of the camera. Thats the reason I'll never buy anything new from canon again. I hope they are reading this thread.

    Hey Amook,

great looking quality! Did you do the shots with the internal codec or external recording with the F3, if external, with HDMI or SDI out?

Thinking about that camera for a while.

    cheers

So no discernible difference between 20mm 1.7 version 1 or 2 as far as AF is concerned?

BTW happy New Year Panny... sorry about my lack of manners.

    Hey!

Rather great manners you got, I would say!:) AF is unchanged.

Believe me, even in photo mode it is not really a joy to use. 1 to 2 seconds of focussing time.

The 14mm 2.5 is quick in photomode and used ones should be possible to be bought for 120usd.

    cheers

  22. Hey Merce! Happy New Year! Heck, It´s too late to be in bed early:) But had to answer this quickly. Heck nono, that lens does not well with AF neither in

video nor in photo :) Beautiful image quality, stellar, one of the very best mft lenses out there. But mechanically it is lacking and in AF even more, AF

in video much, much more. Have been thinking about selling that lens for year now. But image quality in a compact pocket size is keeping from doing so.

I paired it with my new GX80 for doing some filming during a trip. Always shaky footage when trying to focus manually:) By the way, I think GX80 is best

coupled with a light rig for filming, baseplate, rods and handles are enough, very basic. Good night for now:)

    cheers

I would be grateful for any views on this, especially on the Panny 25 1.4 or whether I should invest in the 0.71 speedboster to use my Canon EF 50.14 and other EF (or possibly EF-S) lenses.

    Many thanks in advance.

Hey. I recommend a low price 0.71 (standard) focal reducer from China for around 100 USD/EU.

I got a FD version, because the Canon 28mm, and 50mm 1.4 are very cheap and of very good quality.

The 28mm can be shot wide open at 2.8, coupled with the 50mm at 2.8 you got a great combo with light sensitivty for F2.0 when

speedboosted. My favorite lens is the speedboosted 28mm from Canon. Gives you the same framing as the 20mm, mercer

    was talking about. cheers
