It can't record Raw internally? The 8K is 420, really? 30-min limit? $6500? What a miss.
I'd rather drop a copper heatsink into a R5 and save $2500. And it would still be a better camera.

4/20! I currently rock a GH5S and a Pocket4K, and that’s only because my NX1 is out of commission. I also had a GH5 in the brief window before the S was a thing.
The only thing keeping me from also having an S1H is the autofocus. I’m not upgrading digital bodies until a manufacturer provides full frame open gate with good AF and 13+ stops of DR. Until then, the GH5S and Pocket will do just fine.
If I need top notch DR, I’ll just buy a couple loads of color negative stock and shoot 16mm

I have used the hoya ir cut filter with vari nd and diffusion. Works flawlessly. Use it on the red one as well.
For the pocket i have upgraded to the rawlite olpf. If you just want ir filtration the hoya is perfect.

To make sure the R5 can only be used as a crash cam on set. The R5 has pretty good specs for a crash cam. Use only once to record 15-min RAW video in compact form factor. No cooldown recovery needed as it will crash anyway.

I wanted to avoid them too, but Atomos Ninja V will probably make coffee in next firmware update. I feel forced to buy it!

I'm not sure about the C500 II, but it sure would put a damper on these plans:
    https://www.canonrumors.com/canon-to-introduce-two-8k-cinema-eos-cameras-in-2021-cr2/
One of these Cinema EOS cameras will no doubt be on the level of the C700, as they speculate, but the other one will likely be a cheaper and more compact variant that could be severely undermined by a fully-functioning 8K RAW camera for $4K.

I thought that too at first but when testers were able to get the camera to run for extended periods using an external recorder, it made me believe the sensor temperature isn't the problem.

OK but after you've finished doing your 9 1/2 weeks remake perhaps you could do some more testing of the R5.

i think there`s a guy above the r5 AND cinema eos guys, and he surely owns a pocket calculator.
canon is a company that is on the stock market and that rules out that decisions are made just because somebody is too proud or too vain.

i´m sorry, but the first image completely contratdicts everything you say about nikons design heritage. and the nikon 1 image shows clearly that there is no connection to the z design language.
the z bodies handle like photographic tools. they did not forgoe their past like some competitors who flushed their aquired DSLR history down the drain.
this is the rant of a spec nerd and not of a photographer or a videographer. the video quality that´s coming out of of the z cameras is totally fine and sufficient for the enthusiast. who wants absolute image quality will not look at hybrids anyway.
as you yourself have shown there is no significant difference in image quality between 10bit recording hybrids today. this singling out and bashing of nikon that is all the fashion these last months is silly in my opinion.

Call me paranoid if you want, but I think the overheating of the r5 and r6 is quite a marketing trap. I have already seen several videos where it is mentioned that heating occurs at very different times and several times they have said that the camera is cold to the touch (or at room temperature).
In my view, I believe that overheating is a limit set by Canon through software, I do not think it is a real hardware problem. Canon blocked the camera with a false heat alarm to generate all this debate and controversy on the matter. Then in a few months they will fix it with a simple firmware, because the problem is that, only software. In this way Cannon earns a couple more months of free advertising for his latest product.
If the camera can only be fixed by firmware, I would be very inclined to this theory (in my opinion) and would stop believing Canon. It is all very strange.

But hey, it's just my theory.

All those things you mentioned above.......they shouldn't matter in a video camera! It's really as simple as that. And while the r5 and R6 aren't primarily 'video cameras' they are promoted as video tools.
He was not able to create the piece he wanted to and the camera dictated how the shoot unfolded. To anyone who want's to use this camera more than just filming a few clips of the kids.....that is all you need to know.

I look forward to seeing your review sometime soon.

I am really curious to see how these "non overheating" modes perform in real life situation. I am really grateful that C5D put out the short doc + opinion. Documentary is my primary occupation with stills. Seems like the R6 isn't going to cut it 😕

People crapped on Sony for overheating. And it's a different time now. And the R5 is just so close to perfection that it's painful

I like you and your blog and I think you're funny. But even so, I don't like all this personal negativity. I dont see the value in giving as good as you get. Seems better to me to rise above. One thing I like about newsshooter is how neutral the tone stays. I like where you're going with the comic direction and some of your posts have been really very funny. But I dont need the negativity in my life, it's why I quit twitter.
That being said - i agree that behiri is not giving us a lot of information I would like to know and I think he was very rude to you. But he has a point - if it didnt work for him to shoot documentary style on a typical shoot, it might not work for a typical shoot for me either. In any case, I dont want to be stressing about the camera. This is clearly not a documentary camera.
PS I hope I'm not coming off too critical or annoying. I love your blog and your insight - keep up the good work

i understood it´s not a bayer sensor and you can scale the image resolution on sensor to get full uninterpolated color at 8k raw s-35. which is pretty neat.

The S1H second hand is a lot cheaper than this, you'll find them for 2700 USD or so.
It has an internal fan, all anamorphic modes you could think of, VLOG. External recording for boosted settings, but plenty of good internal ones including a 6K mode for big plates. Excellent colour and DR, it's wonderfully usable.
The only down sides are shit autofocus and the battery life could be better. The stills are amazing too.
It doesn't yet have raw recording because something is up behind the scenes, but it's designed to work as a pro camera, and is the model of how a hybrid camera should work, for me.
If you want a balanced hybrid for professional use, it's the best all-round choice right now. If you want raw for cine-style use with a bigrig, there's the Sigma FP which is phenomenally specced.
The new Canons look like more of the usual "we can't make this too good or no-one will buy our camcorders" rubbish from Canon. Same old same old, looks great on paper before it's released (cue ridiculous YouTuber wide mouth wide eye infantile thumbnails) and turns out to be hobbled in order to make you buy a more expensive model.
They want you to buy a C300 MK iii. It's where all their great new tech is, including their own version of the Arri dual-gain architecture.,
    Fuck em.
