It's surprising to me because I was around for the early digital cameras and then the quality wasn't considered "good" and we hoped for something better in the future. I think it's nostalgic for someone younger though. Their baby pictures were taken with these things and to them, not me, it brings back a time. So, I get it. But the Charmera does not look like film. It looks like early digital camera.s Which is cool. I don't like the jello-cam rolling shutter on the videos, but again, for some people that's nostalgic. Object-wise, I've never seen a Charmera in person but seems like it's fun. In a culture in which having fashion accessories matters, then it makes sense. If you're the cool kid with the little clicky device then you're considered cool. I think the lack of screen gives a sense of chance. You won't know until later just how (bad) it turned out. Anyway, it's fun and I think it's a cool thing. Someday I'll find one at a thrift store for five bucks and I'll probably get it. So, this interest in early digicams has made me re-asses my drawer of mostly broken pocket digitals I've collected over the years. I went through it and found a small Nikon Coolpix S570. 12Megapixals, 5 times zoom. Not broken. I think I stopped using it because I wanted something that saved in raw. This only has JPEG. Anyways, I've been shooting with it and it's nice. Not good in low light though. The JPEG compression isn't bad. It's kinda fun and it's nice having a zoom lens. (My phone doesn't have one.) -

I did a few more tests this morning. I wanted to check the 4K IQ, and I tried everything I could to induce moiré, but to no avail. I scrutinized the Red, Green, and Blue channels as well, and the results were impressive. I'm fairly certain it's due to the image processing because it blows away the already respectable 4K image from my Panasonic GX800. And all of my tests were done with HyperSmooth on; it only gets better with it off. I also tried my Konica 300mm f/4.5 on a tripod in 8K. I'm not sure there's much point in using 8K for distant landscapes, but for closer subjects, why not? I still think 4K looks just as good. One thing this camera is not is a 1080p camera. IMO, they should let us use 10-bit in 1080p, but they don't. Also, when you switch to 1080p, it changes the color profile too. You have to go back and reset it when you resume shooting in 4K or 8K. I think I'll just stay away from the 1080p modes unless I really need the 480fps and up. -
Apples to oranges, not exactly the same but I basically agree with you : ) Huawei Collector's Edition is going today for EUR 2250 / USD 2500, so too much for a camera phone... We buy a ZR for less : D A much fair price would be around the EUR 1500 mark... We buy the Honor/ARRI (not the Robot*, more expensive, especially comparing with other gimbal counterparts) and the 16/1TB version (against the Huawei's 16/512) for less these days... And you double the tele range with. So, a more interesting deal IMHO. Let's see what Black Friday brings us next month... - E. * For the same ticket you pay the other Honor/ARRI (without teleconverters, for a fraction of that Huawei's Ruiying Z10 module zoom lens) and you can even pick 1x Luna Ultra or Osmo 4P... ; ) two-in-one purchase, that is, Huawei is decidedly playing a pricey game for now : ) Makes me closer to be prone to end out there instead ; ) In any case, overheating has been my beef against these capture devices... -
Emanuel, I've been on many concerts 🙂 Mostly rock, pop groups and individual performers. 🙂 More or less concept is the same as Sony maybe Honor has a better implementation. IMHO it will have low market demand. I am motioncam user and visit their community forum from time to time. How many members do you think this forum has ? It recently crossed the 10K mark. More than half of the people who bought the application will run a few test clips and forget about it. Let's assume it has 10K active users or 3x this number. It is still a tiny number compared to the billions of smartphones sold per year. While the economics work for the application and team of 2 people I doubt it will work for the design and production of an add on module + related application and software that can be used only with specific smartphone model. Smarthones are primarily communication devices, then cameras. It doesn't make sense to spend 2000 Euro for a smartphone only because of a particular camera module or add on. 1000 Euro for a phone with decent cameras + 1000 Euro for a better cameras with interchangeable lenses makes more sense. Again IMHO those add on camera / lenses, telephoto lenses, robot phones, they will not last long. We'll see. Let us know if you buy this particular smartphone / camera. -
I meant to also say not as such, but I am (always) looking at ways to introduce character into my files over adding anything in post. I am currently in the process of considering a new photo camera and in doing so have mused over so many options and one of the options is going low megapixel. When I say low, I mean around 12mp and still FF, so not quite loooooow quality. In fact not ‘low’ quality at all, but more ‘character’ and by character, I’ve been thinking about the most challenging year in my career which was when I spent most of an entire season shooting weddings with a single OG Fuji X100 with it’s fixed lens, single card slot and 12mp sensor. That thing was slow as fuck compared with what came later, never mind more current models, but the files… They were the closest SOOC to analogue I have ever come across. A few years later, I bought a used one to check that I had not imagined it and yup, that magic was still there. But could I go back? To that specific camera? Hell no, but I would recommend it to anyone who likes the idea of shooting film who wanted to stay digital. I have thought about getting another and whipping it out to do some ‘artistic’ stuff but as a hybrid shooter spinning enough plates already, decided against and instead looking at other options to achieve ‘character’ the principal one being glass. The only issue with that really is character mostly comes with older glass and that doesn’t tend to autofocus or does so very badly adapted with one of several manual to autofocus adapters…so that’s not working for me… The best I have come up with so far then is the Sony ZVE-1 (12mp and fantastic AF) with the Thypoch 24-50mm f2.8 (internal zoom!) that they say has rendering between a modern clinical lens and a cine lens and has a coating that seems to lower contrast and invite flaring. It could be the 2026 version of the 2011 Fuji X100 that would not be utter madness to shoot as a one & done… And it does video!
