What I've noticed amongst the "oooh look at me, Panasonic have flown me and my objectivity to Osaka" social media posts in the past few days are that a few of them are actually from channels that predominantly cover MFT. Added to the most recent "confirmed" rumours of this new camera (named after my favourite Berlin train line by the way) is pretty much Panasonic's version of the ZV-E1 with an S5ii inside, I think this is Panasonic finally saying out loud that "if you want that new GX85 then you are going to have to go full frame". I suppose this then squares the circle of their form factor kinkiness. With the G9ii they put an MFT sensor in a FF body and now with this new S9 they've put a FF sensor in an MFT body.

  3. When you place clips in a Davinci Resolve timeline you have the option save the used media in the original format (not re-encoded) either complete or split as per the edited clip. When saving the cut clip there is also a choice to add frame handles to both ends of the clip to a selectable length. It can then automatically replace the clips in the timeline with the newly saved trimmed versions. It works for BRAW files as well as standard mov, MP4 etc, but I've not tried it with other raw formats. Certainly saves a lot of storage space and time splitting clips individually. It also gives the opportunity to re-encode the clips before saving them if that is your desire. It's in the file menu under 'Media Management...'

  4. Apparently, this is the size of the S9, the new l-mount camera which is significantly smaller than the S5ii/G9ii. It looks about 500g which would seem correct as the GM1 was about 202g. So many questions remain though. Will it have IBIS? Will it have a proper shutter? What's the max sync speed? There's a hotshoe on top and I'm guessing a flip out screen rather than a flip up one? Is there a mic jack? Overheating will be an issue, but will it have some limit or not? I like how they wrote L-rumors.com on it with the word "Dummy". I'm not a fan of that site or community, but I go because apparently that's one of the only places. Anyone know of another one?

  5. Heavens above! I am enjoying this camera (AX53) so much! The zoom is fabulous. The size and convenience coupled with the internal stabilisation and - I might be repeating myself - that zoom is a winning combination. Yes, the image isn’t up there with the best but one wouldn’t expect it to be. But as a tool to take out, have some fun and create some images to enjoy it’s fabulous. I’m glad I stumbled into this thread!

  6. I always wondered if this film was a ploy by the energy industry to keep legacy fuel sources economically viable and knock fission out of the market. Hard to think about those things with my tinfoil hat on, but I do try.

  7. It would be great for them to release a FF the size of the Sigma FP with a fixed lens or a DSLM and a small 28mm f/2.8 pancake. I'm not sure what this means for M43 if they start focussing on small cameras in L-mount. I suppose they'll make more money in l-mount as they convert people back to Panasonic or "upgrade" M43 users to FF. There's probably not enough money in small, affordable M43 cameras with lenses that already exist everywhere.

  8. L mount rumors is reporting a new "content creators camera" on May 23 at a Lumix announcement. It's supposed to have some unique features. I'm going to guess it's an electronic variable ND. The camera doesn't have an EVF and is similar in size to the FP. Sounds good, but there aren't any Panasonic lenses that would be good for that form factor. We'll see.

Yes, but there were quite a lot of adverse review comments about the level of cropping it used, which probably had an adverse effect on sales (for a vlogging targeted camera needing a wide angle of view). I'm sure the S9 will have at least EIS (which Panasonic do very well). If the new 18-40 zoom lens has OIS that might be enough in a dual-IS combination.

  11. I think as a product, some sort of image stab is going to be important. The G100 didn't have it, but it was quite usable EIS. The conundrum is that it's such a small, light camera, it would be really hard to handhold, but if IBIS adds 200g and bulk to the product, it would make sense to go with EIS. Given the competition and Panasonic's strengths, I think it'll be included (and it'll be up to snuff).

  12. IBIS has been mentioned on l-rumors.com - and personally (given that competition like the a7c ii, ZV-E1 and X100V1 has it) I think it might be a bit suicidal not to include it.

If you want a nice, free, GUI based tool, 'Shutter Encoder' - https://www.shutterencoder.com/ - uses FFMPEG underneath, supports cutting without re-encoding for some codecs (on keyframe boundaries) and is available for Windows, MacOS and Linux. If you want to re-compress the files to reduce the size, it supports ProRes and many others, including optional GPU hardware acceleration for H264/AVC and H265/HEVC. But always check the new files work properly in your editor before you delete the originals... (I don't have any connection with the tool other than being a satisfied user)

  14. If you have a lot of dead time in your media, the other option is to split the original clips to cut out the good bits. IIRC ffmpeg has an option to split a clip into two pieces at a given timestamp, but there might be other programs that can do this too. This method doesn't re-compress the video and audio stream in the file so there is zero loss of quality.

  15. I hope there are some pretty decent small/light lenses for L mount. With that (lack of a) handgrip, that thing is an ergonomic nightmare for any sort of handheld shooting with a lens over 300g or so. If that size comparison is accurate, adding a handgrip pretty much puts one in a "just buy an S5II which puts an EVF in the little bit of extra vertical height" category. (If it's decent resolution, it could be a dream camera for M mount lenses)

  16. That is probably an internal Panasonic image and already had the "dummy" text when L-Rumors got ahold of it. With "Dummy" most likely indicating the picture is of a non-functioning prototype, rather than a corporate comment on rumor-site users. Doesn't look as small as some people seem to have been hoping. Definitely not in the GM1/5 or even GX85 type leagues. And of course it can't be, with L-Mount being a relatively large mount. NIkon's Z-mount would be similarly limited in body height as it is a bit oversized. E-mount is much smaller as it was intended for APS-C, so their A6000-style bodies can be really short. It apparently has IBIS, and the side flip screen from the S5II.

  17. As Panasonic are traditionally in the 'high-value' (rather than 'high-price') area of the market, using the Sony 61MP sensor would probably have pushed the price too high. But if the S9 sells well, an S9r would be the obvious spin-off from it. The Sony FF 24MP sensor is almost in the 'bargain basement' area now. It's OK for stills, but it's slow - hence the poor rolling shutter and crop in 4k 50/60p. Maybe an S1H ii might have a much faster FF stacked sensor? - it would be something significant to put it above the S5iix

  18. Just watched this video from Jimmy on Film and it's right up there in terms of useful and entertaining content.. His examples were really convincing in terms of creating a realistic re-creation of different times of day: and that wasn't even the point of the video - it was just an example of the broader point he was making. He even included lighting diagrams etc. I don't normally post stills etc from videos, but this is an example of the highest level of YT content - it's a clear and simple explanation of an extremely powerful concept, it includes specific details such as diagrams and specific numbers (in this case colour temperatures) but is straight-forward and entertaining too. This is the stuff that really shows you how pathetic the rest of camera YT is.

I don't even think you need a tin foil hat, the energy sector is one of the largest and most powerful on the planet and everyone knew that movies and TV were/are a pretty good way of "guiding" people how to think about the issues of the time. Even if it wasn't influenced directly, nothing exists in a vacuum, and the politics of nuclear weapons and nuclear power were a pretty big topic with many passionate people on both sides trying to push the issue in their favoured direction by whatever means they have at their disposal.

  22. I read some rumours it would have a fixed lens. Who knows, but if so it might enable them to optimise the lens in a way you can't do with an interchangeable mount. I also read it would be full frame. If so, the lens would be the big question. Maybe they'll release a new lens at the same time that is compact and a better compromise for these mercurial content creators.

  23. What a waste of space, I mean I have a Z9, I always use 4k mode and zero sharpening because it is already too detailed. Once I had the misfortune of using the 4k from 8k output on older people, that thing was so hard to blur the skin as it was so detailed. What is the use of using such resolution then to put all types softening filters.

Further to what @eatstoomuchjam said, I think there are only three types of performance: it can't play ungraded footage realtime (ie, you can't edit with it) it can play footage realtime but can't do it with a heavy grade (ie, you can do some colour grading realtime) it can play footage realtime with a heavy grade (ie, it's reliable and you can colour grade live in front of a client) The spec required for level 2 should be researchable and BM would have made this pretty efficient I would imagine. The spec for level 3 is a "how long is a piece of string" question, depending on a ton of variables including timeline resolution and only you can answer it, but if you're going to be doing lots of heavy things like NR and spatial treatments on a 4K timeline then you're probably well into Ultra / Studio territory.

  26. But if I would have only to buy one and carry with me? DJI Mini 4 Pro because flies too! LOL : ) On the ground to have with me all around? Osmo Pocket 3 or the new Ace Pro has also impressed me. Its 8K 24p looks like a winner there. A camera unfortunately or not is the one we can use. Going to a set? Ursa Mini Pro 12K, for some reason I've just purchased it :- )

  27. I love my new S5IIX BUT I think, right now, it'd be the Nikon Z9 or Z8. I really, really like the images I've seen and it's excellent at photos and video.
