These workarounds don't work for all modes. What about 4k 120p? Can't do that currently with an external recorder and even if you could, you've now lost compactness which makes it difficult or impossible to use in the field for wildlife videography. It defeats the purpose of the camera for how I would use it.
Even if you primarily shoot stills, the damn camera heats up and makes it nearly unusable when you do want to take video.
I fail to understand why anyone would use these workarounds for a camera with bad engineering design. Why promote this garbage? Why spend thousands of dollars on a camera that works half-assed at best and requires you to spend another thousand to use it for some of it's video modes but not all?
If you want to stop Canon from making shit cameras stop buying them.

It really does blow my mind how willing people are to reward Canon with their money even if it means having to use an external recorder, empty card slots, and a dummy battery to get usable results.

We are only a few weeks away from “5 AWESOME WAYS to KEEP YOUR R5 from OVERHEATING 🔥🔥 🚫” and “My TOP 10 TIPS for Shooting 8K RAW on the EOS R5!”.
With tips like:
Buy a $400-800 external recorder for your $4,000 mirrorless photo camera. Take your battery out. Take your CFexpress card out. MAke sure to leave your SD card door OPEN! After shooting take off your lens and expose your sensor Avoid hot weather Don’t take photos before video Bring a second body, $2,600 R6 or another $4,000 R5 and swap them. Realize you paid $4,000 for another EOS R...again. LOL! But its Canon...if any other company released a camera like this they would be out of business fast and all the Canon apologist would be saying the same thing: “Unreliable piece of junk!, Not professional gear!, I wouldn’t dare shoot a a job where I was getting paid with that camera”.
See my list above for 7 AWESOME WAYS to KEEP your R5 from OVERHEATING!!!

That people are publishing YouTube vids that they managed to make a video with the R5 without issue is a pretty damning state of affairs.

Well they did base it on a design of a hybrid 20D and 5D.
Just not the ones people were expecting.

Many years ago, when footballers were still earning only a bit more than the average working man, they used to have their wages further reduced in the summer period when no games were played.
One of the finest players of that era, Tom Finney, told a great story about his colleague Tommy Docherty trying to get a better pay deal for himself.
"Tommy came down from Celtic, and had a fairly good season with us. In those days we used to line up in the corridor before going in to the manager to find out our terms for the following year. I went in to see Bill Scott, the manager, and he said I'd be on the same terms as the year before, £12 a week during the season, and £10 a week in the summer, which was known as 12-and-10. Tommy went in after me, and was told he'd be on 12-and-eight. `I'm not signing,' he said. `I've just found out that Finney's on 12-and-10.' The manager couldn't believe it. `But Finney's a far better player than you,' he said. `Not in the bloody summer he's not,' Tommy said."
I've been reminded of that story again by numerous comments I've been reading about the S1-H and its AF system.
Yes, the R5 and A7Siii might have much better AF systems than the S1-H but not when the camera has overheated they haven't.

kaylee reacted to Trankilstef in Did Canon market the EOS R5 at video pros? Yes.
Sometimes i want to sell my S1H because of its AF that's not on par with the offeringd of the competition. But then I think about my needs and realize I don't shoot sports, i don't shoot fast action, i usually shoot interviews, corporate, docs, and i'd love to go more tow fictional kind of shoot (narrative).
And i tell myself why would I need another camera for those controlled environments i'm shooting in?
Panasonic bodies are so reliable, but hey they're not as trendy as all those cameras from Canon ans Sony that all the bloggers show.
That's a shame. The AF is a lame excuse to me. I rather have a reliable camera, a workhorse with not so good continuous af than an unreliable camera with fast blazing af.

Sod the recall.
Canon can sell the EOS R5 to Icelandic elves and eskimos.

This camera is so underrated. Besides the continuous AF that's not as good as the competition it offers everything. Yeah the 4k60p is cropped... Of course it can not do 4k120p....
But it works. Never let you down, offers stellar image quality and really good color science, doubles as a professional photographic tool, has all the features for professional video (waveform, spot luminance for vlog, the choice to put your lens in linear or non linear focusing, and so on). It offers 6k and ProRes RAW. It's a workhorse.
Very underrated.

Why is Canon being given a harder time about over heating compared to Sony overheating and color issues? This does not seem fair and not sure why the mob mentality has taken over?
Nikon got crushed for 1 card slot, Panasonic for bad AF, Canon for the cripple hammer but Sony gets a pass for overheating in the sun and bad color science that needs profiles and Resolve to fix?
I need to buy a camera for an up coming Neflix pitch. I would love to get the S1H and be done with it. My only concern with the S1H is color depth.

Yikes, I shoot in those temps or hotter every day. If I can't get any video at all while out shooting stills in the sun, my R5 preorder is on life support as of now. I really like shooting with the EOS R, but I was looking at the R5 as my A-cam, not something for just cutaways or a stills only body. Every new bit of info makes it more likely I'll be holding on to the a7r3 and adding a a7s3 preorder - so close to dropping Sony's ergos, menus and shitty touchscreen.

The S1H, I took it out at the height of a hot day, was shooting bursts (I always shoot bursts) and video for ages, but the fan didn’t even seem to come on
if you look at the size difference between the S1 line and the Canon and Sony models, I think that’s the main issue here, just The physics. Cramming Hot things into to tiny sealed bodies makes for poor ventilation.
i don’t know why the obsession with shrinking professional tools, for me it’s a lose lose, I prefer the larger ones in use and they don’t boil themselves.

Crazy indeed. Look closely at 0:51. The AF cannot distinguish an eye from a butthole.

I have my X-T3 on a rig powered by a D-tap battery. I've done multiple shoots where I've hit the recording limit and then hit record again and again for an hour and a half or more, no problem.
I've also livestreamed for 2 plus hours straight in a room warm enough to make sweat stick my shirt to my back (without recording).

kaylee reacted to Django in Canon R6 overheats as well.
..or just shoot normal 4K for your long recordings and sprinkle 8K/4K60p/4K120p when available/necessary. those modes will eat up storage space anyways so not great for long recordings. that is how I shot with 5D3 + ML RAW or even on EOS R (FHD+ FHD HQ / 4K).
according to a R5 tester on YT, the camera never fully shuts down during overheat and still allows normal 4K shooting:

kaylee reacted to homestar_kevin in Camera gear is now disposable?
I think this is definitely true and has been for awhile.
It seems with current production methods/ideas, the more electronics and software go into lenses the less serviceable they will be.
I remember with the Samsung NX glass they did the same thing. You could go on Samsung parts website and buy 'Parts' lenses, which were just brown box replacement lenses for a much cheaper price. This was because they rarely or didn't service lenses, they just replaced them.
Now the other side of this is that everything seems to be getting to this point.
There are pretty nice 2x1 flexible bi-color LED panels like the 3060a that are like ~$150-200 bucks. That's what I'd call cheap enough to be almost disposable, or at least if I'm on a shoot and it goes down I wouldn't be as concerned as I would've been 8-10 years ago with a $2000 Kinoflo Diva or something.

Welcome to the "I discovered that something that 'everyone knows' is completely wrong by simply trying it out myself" club.
If this was a real club then my rank would be 'Grand General Lord - Class 15 - Special' because the number of times I've spent 30 minutes doing a test and found out everyone online is talking out of their asses about something is beyond counting at this point.
We should make t-shirts.

kaylee reacted to thebrothersthre3 in truth about Pocket 6k dynamic range
This is a very strange one to me. I've seen online tests as well as examples from shoots I've been on of the Pocket 6k having really great dynamic range. Yet Blackmagic claims it has less dynamic range than the Ursa Mini and the same dynamic range as the Pocket 4k. Cinema 5d measured it at 11.9 stops while measuring the Ursa at 12.6.
I tested the Pocket 6k against the URSA, both at 800 iso and the Pocket had more highlight and shadow information, by a good amount. If the Ursa has 12.6 stops of dynamic range the Pocket 6k has got to have over 13 maybe 13.5.
I'll probably post the tests if anyone is interested.

Canon should counter-troll Sony and push the announcement date after Sony, who moved theirs to after Canon. Imagine an infinite cycle.
