HAVE YOU GUISE SEEN THIS?!?! IT IS A WORK OF ART
idk where the overwhelming amount of negative reviews are coming from -- bloggers, influencers, theater goers -- but what about disney themselves!?? THEY like it!! thats why they spent half a billion dollars making it and advertising it. the 'empty theaters' are clearly propaganda
what i like to see in filmmaking is some low contrast shots that are poorly graded, with bad art direction, costume design, etc. i like a script that would be borderline unreadable on the page, one that has been brought to the big screen with some surprisingly terrible acting, insane casting, and a healthy dose of girlboss wokeness.
and i HATE the old fashioned boomer 'rotoscoping' from 'beautiful footage' that looks 'naturalistic' -- so lame!!! who came up with that!?!??
i dont want any kind of visual unity in sfx, vfx, whatever -- i LOVE uncanny valley stuff. it speaks to my generations post modern malaise in a way that old ppl just cant understand
~ i mean this sucks (below).
i especially hate how friendly and cool the animals seem despite being kinda anthropomorphic in the face and theyre not EVEN REAL!!! the ppl who made this were morons w no tech. if only theyd had more dr
THIS, on the other hand, looks GREAT to me. it needs a few more stops of dr but it is highly naturalistic
i thought these were all real ppl until...... someone told me that IT WAS CGI!! i also though these characters were deformed dwarves (and possible aliens) until i was told that they are 'magical creatures' !!! fooled again by those hollywood geniuses!
most of all, i like that turquoise color of her dress. what a great design! classic
what do you all think of this contemporary masterpiece? im sure it will recover its $500 million within minutes and go on to be a timeless masterpiece that we show to our children, and our childrens children

I'll be honest, when I saw your topic title, I was legitimately hopeful that it was actually good, because as much as I dislike Disney, I am all for any movie being enjoyable. Now I'm sad.
However, I read the comments on the trailer, and they got me smiling again, so there's that.

The only way they could have improved upon this would have been having the artist formerly known as Ridley Scott, at the helm.

You've got to hand it to these corporate suits, they know how to make art.
It's the one thing they spend all their time at Harvard and Yale dreaming about.
And the creativity you need to complete an MBA... Mindblowing.
I dare say these folk are born into art, consumed by it at an early age thanks to their investment banking parents.
And it takes BALLS, big brave BALLS to make a movie like this, standing up to Twitter and focus groups and telling them NO. IT WILL HAVE SMALL MAGIC PEOPLE IN IT.

kaylee reacted to fuzzynormal in Old and New
tl/dr: Made a small and simple doc film years and years ago with my first 'hybrid' camera. The process was inspiring and changed my outlook about working with motion pictures:
A bit of online chatter here about cameras that are older and it got me thinking because I recently posted a doc my wife and I are currently working on. It was made with recent camera gear and fancy new computers and software.
Something old. Something new.
Well, as a retrospect, here's a look at the very first film we attempted. This was in 2011. My entire career at that time had been broadcasting and corporate. Didactic stuff. That was my reality and vocational training.
If making a film was compared being an architect designing a building, my education was basically akin to being an electrician. Installing wires and cables I could do -- and that was kind of it, y'know?
So when we set out to shoot this 'Camino' flick, our assumption was that we were going to do what was typical for us: Subject-matter-experts-interviews, b-roll, maybe even having a presenter doing stand ups and narration. That type of thing.
Interestingly, this upcoming shoot was immediately preceded by a corporate assignment in southern Spain. The experience of filming some pretty incredible scenery footage only to know that it was going to be handed off to my client who would hammer it into a dry travelogue video was disheartening. Also, a year before we had also made a standard travelogue video ourselves in Japan. We were underwhelmed by the results we created there too.
My wife saw my frustration with all this and started asking "why". Why were we doing things a certain way. What exactly would we be offering the world with another video that was a parade of talking heads telling the viewer what to think/feel? No acceptable answers were readily available.
So, the day before this journey we decided to ditch all the audio gear, the Sachtler tripod, and the HD video camera with multiple lenses. Into the backback went a used 5DII and a nikkor 50mm prime. That was it. Felt a bit naked, tbh. But that was the first day we set off into the world as filmmakers rather than as a cameraman or a broadcast ENG person.
We wanted to make something completely impressionistic and opposite of what was typical for us. We'd only use 1 small cam, 1 small lens, a walking staff as a makeshift monopod.
This epiphany came about not only from the conversation with my wife, but also the realization that a really simple camera rig was not only going to give me an opportunity to run and gun cinematically; but to do it better than with the extensive gak I normally carried around. Cinematic shooting was something that I never really felt the freedom to explore --until that moment. And so we went to make a humble unassuming little film.
The simplicity became it's value. Less was more we reasoned. Create a vibe rather than an info dump.
Our modest film might not seem like much, and there's so many mistakes I made first time out of the gate I still cringe at, but it changed our view about our careers. From there we started to be interested in what it took to be better storytellers. Could we actually do that? Really?
All of this to say that perspective really matters. And that the gear we talk about here can actually offer new perspectives. But it was the attitude first and foremost that needed a shift. Cheers.

He’s a well known camera reviewer who wears oversized trousers (pants to the US brethren but trousers in the more civilised world who can also spell words like civilised properly) with his pockets stuffed full of camera gear like flashes and tripods and snacks.
Who the hell are Jane’s Addiction?

'the animal' dave batista has clearly cut down on his massive steroid + hgh intake. word is he wants some 'normal' movie roles
i ran into him at my gym in LA years ago when he was at his biggest, and my trainer knew him and introduced me, and i gotta tell u.... you cannot imagine how huge he was. this is a golds gym in LA. many muscled up guys. hes standing next to my trainer who was 6'2" 235 and he absolutely dwarfed him. he ~WAS~ like an animal, the wrestling nickname was appropriate.
fwiw he was SUPER nice so i like him lol

Depends on the editor and how "basic" you mean. On my M2 Max, Resolve does a decent job with 8K raw lite and chugs a bit with 8K raw standard from the R5, also depending on which decode thingie I choose in the raw processing tab. Canon's 8k raw standard is notoriously brutal.
(Though proxies are always an option!)

yes, so i hear
uhhh, yes. isss my basic mbp gonna be able to handle 8k raw in any way orrr. feel like i would need to add a new computer to that order lol
-
kaylee reacted to Django in Exposing c-log3 on the R6m2
If you shoot a lot of 4k60 then R6 mk2 actually has a much better oversampled instead of line skipped image than R5mk2.
But if that isn’t a concern then the original R5 may be a better choice as it’s now more or less the same price as an R6 mk2 at some dealers. You’d gain 45MP / 8K and internal RAW.
yeah I always just go with the exposure meter on Canon cams, plus of course the view assist to get a rec709 preview.
Unless mistaken the exposure meter is absent on Nikon’s in video mode? I always find the exposure meter most handy on small mirrorless lcd’s.

@Andrew Reid ty!
that was 800, but im seeing good stuff up to 6400, as you said, and even 12800. shocking -- i had no idea. makes the cam much more interesting.
ive been getting great results w clog3 after getting the hang of it -- its easy. lovely color, respectable highlight rolloff, and decent dynamic range for naturalistic images that dont look like video puke. Not bad, i might get one of these. half the price of the R52 rlly makes me like it lol
been stress testing, just some random frames

kaylee reacted to Django in How come expensive camera's look so much better?
On a pure IQ level, mirrorless has definitely made significant strides wether in DR, color science, resolution, rolling shutter etc. And more importantly now with chunky internal RAW/ProRes/10-bit/Log files the gap towards high-end cinematic imagery has definitely narrowed significantly. RED/ARRI still rule in highlight roll off, DR but all the extra mileage you see on an image is indeed mostly lens, light, color grading related.
On a related note, with CST in Davinci you can transform your log footage to RED/ARRI Clog and apply their LUTs & look files. Results may vary but the gap isn't as big as you'd think.
-
kaylee reacted to IronFilm in How come expensive camera's look so much better?
The point I was making, is that if a production runs into even merely just thirty minutes of overtime, or/and has a very slight increase to post production costs, then those additional costs to production would totally wipe out any "savings" they might get from renting a cheaper camera than an ARRI/Sony/RED/Varicam.
I love this feature as a Boom Op and Sound Mixer!! (nothing to do with an actor entering the frame though, I mean for our purposes)
Huge time savings having an ARRI on set vs "random Camera X" that nobody has ever worked with before.
A great analogy. (to carry on this analogy: you'd save time using a F1 over a Camry at the race track, but you'd lose time if you used the F1 for a shopping trip. Ditto cameras, it could be "fast" or "slow" to use, depending on the type of set it's being used on)
Now excuse me while I go do this week's grocery shopping in a F1....
-
kaylee reacted to mercer in How come expensive camera's look so much better?
I hate those videos that try and compare a $1000 camera to an Alexa with a stupid thumbnail that suggests you'll be surprised by the results. Inevitably, you learn that the operator wasn't as good at using cameras as he was at making thumbnails, or they intentionally cripple the Alexa by shooting in ways to highlight the $1000 camera.
That said, I agree that probably 9 out of 10 times, nobody will realize what camera you shot your movie with as long as the story is good and engaging, but I do think that a couple of those people may feel like something was off without knowing why.
An Alexa costs 50K+ for a reason. And although I believe craft and resources lend to the final look of the film, the sensor, the Arri color science and its thick files are a piece of the puzzle.
A long time ago, I got hooked on my Canon 5Diii with ML Raw because it was the first time I had shot something where I looked at it and thought... man that almost looks like a real movie. So there are some "intangibles" involved because I am not that talented, nor that skilled. I have shot with a bunch of cameras since... GH5, GH6, Sigma FP, S5iiX, Canon R7, etc... and although the FP comes close, but even its 4K raw image is no match to my trusty, old 5D3 in gross old 1080p raw.

kaylee reacted to MrSMW in How come expensive camera's look so much better?
I am equally as confident that my camera is capable of burning in my LUT saving me hours and hours of grading per job and no client ever has, or ever will ask for me to do anything further with the end result.
But then I am the opposite end of making movies and just a hack wedding vidiot.
It will not stop them asking me however if I have any footage of random Aunt Jane who flew in from Canada chatting with uni friend Sandeep with Uncle Herbert in the background chatting with my mum.
Nor is there any more footage of your empty dance floor.
I once had a bride list 3 things I had not captured:
1. Blossom on a particular tree outside.
2. A chandelier that was in the entrance hall.
3. A brown leather sofa.
But I digress…

Ergo... it's not just the camera.
