Holy shit. This is a dream come true for VFX movies.

    holy shit is right ?

for me personally this is one of the coolest things ive ever seen

i dont even kno where to start...... of wait yes i do!!

chromakey green seriously makes me physically ill when im surrounded by it all day long, and as an artist i find it aesthetically embarrassing on my set... AND that whole process is just painstakingly awful in a way that feels wrong... its not the right way. the right way is the easy way. a camera that sees a 3d environment. that is some 21st century stuff r there

and of course im talking about vfx heavy productions – quentin tarantino is not reading this announcement lol

    Default to HD

While the original “Default to HD” setting is no longer an option, we’ve introduced a new way for Plus and PRO creators to maintain some control over the quality of their videos.
Plus and PRO members can now choose the default quality of their embedded videos. To do so, you must append a query parameter (quality) to the end of the embed code’s player URL.

anybody tried this to see how it works?

As far as image, I've yet to see many cameras, including professional high end - surpass what the Mark 3 does raw.  It clips gorgeously within the 11 stops, the color is something it has that most don't.  I don't think I've actually seen any camera do what the ML raw colors on the Mark 3 do to be honest..  Other than that, it's still a hack and the idea of dropped frames is something that makes me second guess it when I've scheduled and paid a crew and a cast to be somewhere.  People may not have problems with it, but I'd have to test it thoroughly before I trusted it.  Besides that, I've always loved the 1DC.  Out of the current C-line, it's my favorite image.  That said however, I would hold out to see what's coming at NAB, or the Mark 4 for that matter.  Then I'd make a decision.

    ^^^^ completely agree 100%

im personally looking forward to getting a used 5d3 later this year if nothing that i like better comes along before then. the work that i need it for wont start until the fall so i have plenty of time to see whats new around and after nab

Here is some 5D Mark III Raw that show its Dynamic Range.

imo 5d3 raw is somehow simultaneously the most real image around and the prettiest

it makes the ordinary extraordinary. a few seconds in post with ETTR_low and it starts looking like a vermeer

how do you like it, mattias? ive been looking forward to hearing your thoughts

the video features of the camera will be the best in the lineup and will easily best the EOS-1D X Mark II for most filmmakers. While the EOS-1D X Mark II is aimed at photojournalists, the EOS 5D Mark IV will be aimed at filmmakers

    Read more: http://www.canonrumors.com/eos-5d-mark-iv-update-cr2/#ixzz43FyN0cpS

rumors have been trending in this direction for awhile...

for the sake of discussion: if this is true, what features exactly are going to distinguish a 5d4 from the 1dxii for video?

what is it that makes this new camera "better for filmmakers"?

    • 10 bit? - lol doubt it

    • flippy screen? - id love to see that but canon has been uptight about their weatherproofing standards, dont think thatll be on this camera

    • clog? - i hope this feature makes it, and although i wouldnt bet on it being there, what ELSE is going to make this new body better for video than the 1dxii?

idk lol these are rhetorical questions what do you guys think??

btw im starting a new rumors website where all the rumors are "true"

heres my rating system im still perfecting it

    KR5 - Truthy

    KR4 - TRUE????

KR3 - Most likely expected to be true prolly sort of but yes

    KR2 - TRU TRU TRUE!!!!!!!

KR1 - Literally information from the future my website uses zero point energy

Yea... The 5D4 could really bring ML back into the game. Has anyone worked out the data rate required for 4k raw... About 400MBps I guess? CF fast could do it, right?

    my secret fantasy lol

    stranger things have happened tho

I'm sure we are all (expectedly) underwhelmed by the video features of the last two Canon announcements (1300D and 80D)... But the first thing I think about when these cameras drop is "what can ML do with them"?

    me too

id love to see another generation of ml raw video hacking, but i dont know how much the interest is there from the developer community anymore, sad to say it

if theres gonna be a target for magic lantern any time soon (between data speeds/affordability etc) it could be the upcoming 5d4/X... ive still got my fingers crossed but im not holding my breath lol

on the plus side, 5d3 bodies should become even more affordable in the near future

i think that cameras gonna be around forever... film students will be buying them used years and years from now to shoot raw video. its really cool

  8. upon rereading my giant post about ghostbusters, it seems like that subject struck a nerve with me lol

of course i cant edit it now... and i have to look at "youre" staring me in the face for the rest of my life smh

but, yeah, mattias has a point which is worth underscoring without me going on an sfx tirade:

if this were any other movie sequel with 4 male leads recast as 4 female leads, the reaction would be the same: a massive amount of dislikes for the trailer on youtube which is wildly disproportionate to the trailers for other mediocre films which are virtually identical

I was going to post the crowdfunding trailer for my feature on vimeo, but now that I can't choose the playback quality it makes a lot more sense to post it on youtube.

id love to see your trailer squig go get em

...sooo does vimeo know about youtube? like do they even? its a v popular website

i NEVER get links to vimeo from people who arent filmmaking people @VimeoStaff. NEVER. this is a niche which you need to serve. its your only hope

lasvegasbarbie does not post on vimeo for a reason. and when i want to watch serval videos do you know where i go? legit shows like jay lenos garage arent coming over any time soon... imagine saying that to jays producer, "vimeo". theyd laugh at you and for good reason

  10. feminism is the radical idea that women are people – crazy, i kno...

feminism is about equality, not about replacing men with women ?

although theres a ton of misogyny in those youtube comments, mattias has a valid point indeed, i dont see how this particular film benefits from 4 female leads

btw: i fucking LOVE ghostbusters. the original film is one of my favs of all time

when i watched the new trailer, i thought it was pretty good, but that was based on my expectation that it would be HORRID

why? an all female cast sounded like a would-be money grabbing gimmick to me, the particulars of the casting didnt change my mind, and i figured that contemporary half assed vfx would be the icing on the cake

one of the keys to me about ghostbusters – a film with a premise about "ghosts", campy, campy ghosts, that do not exist – is how the film feels real, in a way that many 21st century movies do not

i have a theory: the more absurd the story youre telling is in terms of general believability and moreover supernatural elements, the more it benefits from feeling like it takes place in the real world

ghostbusters feels like new york city – not just a city but that city. the cinematography and sound design just kills it. i feel like i can smell the exhaust from the cars on the street

the photography based sfx in ghostbusters feels completely tangible imo compared to vfx characters. for example, stay puft? is MADE OF MARSHMALLOW. hes a GIANT MARSHMALLOW MAN. for me, effects like that are more convincing than anything made from 3d vfx models, from lord of the rings to transformers

if i was directing ghostbusters (or transformers) in 2016, id take the same approach used in the original ghostbusters: id build models, shoot them carefully, and use the awesome technology we have at our disposal for compositing, with a subtle vfx sprinkle of sugar on top to tie it all together

in closing, the most fundamental thing i need to do as a filmmaker is:

use storytelling to make people wanna spend money

    does this trailer do that?

maybe so, but i think it could be a lot better

Yeah, but if you conduct a survey on whether or not vimeo sucks now, do you ignore the "no" reponses and just take the "yes" responses as a definitive answer? The "yes" answers are meaningless on their own. If 2/5 people say "yes" and 3/5 people say "no", does vimeo suck now?

i hear ya matt! but people like me want that to be a 5/5 when it comes to playing 1080 without reverting to standard def mush.  some say thats the point of vimeo – controlling what the audience sees, despite the users connection speed

  12. uhmm this is only slightly off topic lol....

if this is true http://www.canonrumors.com/there-will-be-a-4k-5d-camera-cr2 – that theres a 5d4ish 4k slr coming soon, would you all expect it to shoot motion jpeg for 4k like the 1dxii and 1dc?

theres definitely something about the motion of the 1dc... it just feels like solid, independent frames to me, like film frames in that sense... hard to explain but i know what you guys mean
