andrgl reacted to Kisaha in Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
This is definitely taken by the Sony book. For years Sony was selling cameras only from the spec lists with terrible ergonomics, terrible battery life, overheating and the such and they reached No2..
Canon decided to play "dirty" and put everything they had on a camera, which isn't even that "expensive". I believe it is a good marketing strategy for them, but for me, it gives more points to Panasonic, as the most true and honest manufacturer out there.
It overheats? then make the biggest and heaviest m43 ever made (GH5) because it has to be a workhorse. We have to make a full frame hybrid video workhorse? put a fan into one if need be. That is an incredible approach, especially back in the Alpha and alpha days but even still...
Another point I want to make, is that there is a new business model out there, that they do not need workhorse cameras anymore.
Some people can just use any camera producing small clips, or youtube videos and earn their bread (and butter). For me, it is unacceptable that a camera may ,or may not, overheat on a job (even FS7 do rarely and its a huge thing on set), but I see a lot of the younger generation that have no problem with that.

I think we should look at the overheating as a positive. You can use the camera to cook bacon to feed the crew in between takes. You'll save on catering!

andrgl reacted to Django in Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
The R5 will only overheat in 8K, 4K60p & 4K HQ.
It shouldn't have any problems in regular 4K24p/30p.
Calling it unusable is a little extreme. What other hybrid camera can even approach these specs? 8K/4K120p FF no crop, DPAF2, RAW, 10-bit 4:2:2 internal.
Besides we've had 30mn recording limits for years due to EU laws. Hardly an issue for me personally..
That said, if Sony can do better, bring it on!

LOL
Do you think Canon's marketing would tell you?!
It's buried deep into the CVP launch video around the 23:00 mark
And comes from manufacturer tests with the actual final camera.
"CANON have given us information on how long we can expect to get out of this camera"

I mean...sigh...this is not the end of the world, I guess. You "CAN" still use the R5 for events if you plan it carefully.
Stage play - Use 2 R5's and start one 10 min later than the other. This allows one to force time stop before the other. Then just stager the record start/stops back and forth between them.
Your kids school singing play - Time your record stop when some other kid is singing to as to make sure your time is rationed in favor of your kids performance.
Wedding - Plan in advance with the priest. Setup a hand signal to let him know you are stopping. This triggers him to tell the audience...."we will now have a moment of silence for the bride and groom"...assuming the room is not hot, you can stop/start again without missing anything.
See?....the R5 "IS" doable if you PLAN your work and RATION your time wisely.

It's specs are obviously impressive, but what do specs matter if the camera is functionally limited? If you constantly need to give the camera a break to use these "groundbreaking" features, how is that practical?
Innovation is great, but it should be fully realized, not half baked and just thrown out there because you're trying to undermine the competition.
I hope once we are able to really see this camera in action that it exceeds expectations.

It's hilarious. For years Canon have been the conservative ones, telling us they are not doing this or that for reliability reasons or waiting to get it bullet proof.
Holding back on video specs to avoid reliability problems has been the Canon mantra!
Then they do a complete U-turn on reliability just to put an 8K badge on the box 😂
The EOS R5 is a pro's camera. It isn't a $1000 A6300 toy.
If it lets you down on a shoot that is a total disaster and something no pro would consider working around.
How would you work-around it anyway? An icepack? A nice breeze? Put it in the same bucket as the lobster in the catering tent?
I think some people are in denial
He hasn't even used it yet

andrgl reacted to Andrew Reid in Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
Nitpicking?
Don't shoot the messenger!
It's hardly nitpicking if the camera goes off in the middle of a shoot is it?
What happens if you lose a shot and have to down tools for 10 minutes, and then can only go for a few minutes more before the same happens again?
How in any way is that fit for purpose professionally or for paid work?
And for live stuff, documentaries, interviews, it's a complete no-go, even in 4K.
I'd much rather have a fan in there like the Panasonic S1H and know it is fit for paid work, or even Netflix.
Can you imagine the EOS R5 getting Netflix approval, only for the entire production to be downed countless times in one session due to the overheating problems?

Dude it doesn't matter if you can't shoot!
Dead camera on set.
Dead camera at wedding.
Excuse me priest! HALT the ceremony!
My EOS R5 has overheated!

The overheating information comes from a very good source, who tested the camera.
CVP in the UK.
Are you saying I should sit on this and not give it any attention? Not sure how that serves anybody.
I have criticised Canon that's true... And finally they bring very good specs on paper to the table.
But if it isn't fit for purpose on a shoot or on a set - how is it innovative or groundbreaking then?
I can claim on paper to be the first camera nerd to go to the moon and set out on the journey tomorrow from my back yard but if the rocket can't get off the ground, there's not much groundbreaking about it is there?
"Under market price" not sure about that - It is top of the market pricing for a full frame mirrorless camera with only 3 that are more expensive (one of them is a Leica).
In terms of an 8K cinema camera yes it is cheaper than a RED.
But it does't work, does it?
So the mission to the moon is not accomplished.

Rolling shutter isn't on all cameras, some have global shutter!
Here is a £550 smartphone that shoots 8K H.265 in a much smaller chassis
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Xiaomi-128GB-Twilight-Grey(UK-VERSION)/dp/B08814LC74/ref=sr_1_2?dchild=1&keywords=xiaomi+mi+10+pro&qid=1594321255&sr=8-2
Why is that image processor not overheating?
The R5 is a brick in comparison, with space for potential solutions like heat sinks, heat pipes and more space for the electronics.
So why doesn't it work?
Plus it is £4000 and at that price reliability is vital.

andrgl reacted to Andrew Reid in Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
He then says in next sentence that he hasn't had the chance to record for a very long time 😂
And that Canon hadn't put a recording limit on it.
Which isn't true.
Besides it's the usual marketing video, so he ain't saying what modes, how long he recorded in 8K and 4K for, what the ambient temps were (looks fucking freezing from the location) or any other meaningful info that would have helped users to know the score.
Typical hype piece.

andrgl reacted to no_connection in What to buy for a DIY rigid diffuser?
No matter how you look at it the more you diffuse the more light you are going to loose.
You could put a filter between two acrylic sheets, LEE 251 for example. But it's somewhat directional and have some bleed through but not much. Maybe two sheets separated by a space would give you decent diffuse with decent light transmission and only loose maybe a stop.
Diffuse silicon put on acrylic could work but again, you are going to loose decent amount of like.
The more even your light source is the less diffusion is needed to make it smooth. If you can find an older LCD TV that had back lit CFL, those had pretty good diffusion. Or if you can edge light a newer TV that would be pretty even too.

I can send a google drive link for RAW files if anyone wants. But I think this demonstrates the dynamic range differences.
Ursa 4.6k over exposed
Pocket 6k over exposed
Ursa 4.6k under exposed (zoomed in to show noise pattern better)
Pocket 6k under exposed (zoomed in to show noise pattern better)

andrgl reacted to TheRenaissanceMan in Sony PMW-F3 with 2500 hours on it. Should I buy it?
Stills from some past F3 projects, all with Leica R's and the 5" Video Assist. Such a remarkable camera: lovely to use, easy to grade, solid in low light, lots of dynamic range...for the money I paid, it's earned its keep 50 times over.

andrgl reacted to OliKMIA in Olympus sells Imaging Business
Very sad, I really loves Olympus lenses. Such great optics.
As for the sales and business side, it must be a nightmare to manage that sort of company when your market has been shrinking by 10% per year for so long. It's interesting to compare how Kodak and Fuji managed a similar market crash 20 years ago. I wrote a detailed piece on this:
https://petapixel.com/2018/10/19/why-kodak-died-and-fujifilm-thrived-a-tale-of-two-film-companies/
(respectfully, feel fee to remove this link, I don't want to spam)
I'm afraid they Olympus sold to who ever they could under the pressure of the shareholders. And now, who's next? Can the pro and prosumer market sustains all the current camera manufacturers? Canon, Sony, and Pana can rely on their other business divisions but companies like Nikon are very isolated and photo-centered.

andrgl reacted to Tito Ferradans in Lens Mod Live! Helios 44 Anamorfake
Hey guys, I started livestreaming on my channel - anamorphic on a budget, you're not familiar - and I'm doing a Helios 44 anamorfake next Wednesday at 11:30am PST. I'm giving away the resulting mod at the end of the process to someone in the stream, so there's a chance you can walk away with a fresh lens on the way.
I'd love to see a bunch of you there. I'm answering questions there too, so if you got something to ask, that's a good chance!

Should be worth tuning into this.
No idea what they are going to announce but I suppose there will be an update about the full frame Foveon amd hopefully something concrete about a firmware update for the fp.
They've mentioned APS-C L mount lenses in the past so maybe they will make an appearance and who knows maybe a camera to go with them?
