andrgl reacted to eatstoomuchjam in Enshittification Full Ahead
Yes, but as long as some people still buy VW and some people buy the upgrade, other car manufacturers will be inspired to do the same. This is how the enshittification race to the bottom works.
It used to be that if I bought a plane ticket on any airline, I got a checked bag for free. Not only that, but overhead space was plentiful and I could be a bit chill about boarding the plane. Then one airline started charging for checked bags. When people didn't stop flying with them, the other airlines followed suit. After all, people are apparently willing to accept a shittier flying experience. Now checked bags cost money and overhead space is crammed full which makes me one of the annoying boarding buzzards circling around the boarding stanchions so that I can be sure to get on in time to put my camera bag above me and not get into an argument with the boarding agent about whether I'm going to gate check it (and no, gate agent, I cannot relocate all of the lithium batteries into my other much smaller "personal item" that goes under the seat in front of me).
Anyway, the shrugging and accepting it is basically what is at the core of enshittification.

And that mount.
Megadap will be rubbing their hands at the amount of E mount lenses that may well be finding a home on this camera.
Not just from Sony defectors either but from new owners of the ZR who look at the plethora of appropriately sized E mount lenses on the new and used market and will consider the ZR as a de facto E mount camera.

It’s the international break.
The world turns to shit when there is no club football.
There is only so much England vs Andorra that people can take.
Everything will be OK again on Saturday.

People here would have dreamed about this camera just two years ago. People were crying for 10 bit and log like 5 years ago, and some people filmed movies with the Gh2 or Canon 5D. I am not saying this camera doesn't have flaws. But saying this is a camera for content creation when you have multiple Raw formats, and one color science that was only available to cameras costing 7k, but more precisely 10 k when you add the accessories in the apsc red komodo, and about 15-20k in full frame.
In fact you can film a movie with this. I am sad it did not happen 10-20 years ago, or I was not 10-20 years younger, thinking about this I prefer the later... Oh shit, looking how the world is going, I prefer the former. LOL

I know the phrase of the day is content creator, but I, personally, see this as the ultimate, low/no budget, DIY, short film camera. I don't think I have ever been so tempted to hit preorder.
I understand its inconveniences and there are a couple things I need to research... battery life (the FP is atrocious), overheating, IBIS quality, etc... but I must say this is the most excited I have been for a camera since I bought my 5D3 and installed ML Raw onto it.

This is the most exciting cinema camera I've seen since the 5D3 got cDNG RAW with Magic Lantern.
Not a fan of Z mount but the camera specs make it irrelevant. I may even buy into their lens ecosystem now. Hopefully Sigma starts making FF natives for their system.
Anyway. Instant buy. It's amazing, cuz I never thought I'd own a RED. Nikon buyout is the best thing ever.
Edit: Note to self, buy Megadap ETZ21 Pro+ and Sigma 28-45mm f/1.8 in Sony E.

I stumbled on this GitHub project. Not sure what to think about it (and suspect it might not be real). They're using the same sensor as the Digital Bolex and 3D printing a similar shaped body. No mention of an A to D board, just the chip going in to a Raspberry Pi. I remember the original Digital Bolex team took a few years to get the sensor's quadrants aligned and to get the colour science sorted out and these guys' sample images look great after only a short time. Maybe all this stuff is just faster to figure out nowadays.
https://github.com/lafauxbolex
What do others think? If real this would be great! They're changing some things from the original: A M4/3 mount, a big monitor and compressed DNG files.

Always great to hear the ML community is still pushing along. I cut my teeth on the 5D MKII ML and still have two 5D MKIIIs with ML that I refuse to sell! All that said, the R50V is $650 brand new and once those hit the used market they'll be $500 and under vs the 5D MKIII which is still going for roughly the same price. So nostalgia aside, the R50V's price, specs - not to mention form factor and access to RF and EF lenses - really makes it hard to argue that anything ML related is the prudent way to go in 2025, imo.

Yeah, exactly. That's what I'm saying. Their banter is still good/fun, but there doesn't seem to be even the slightest spark in the reviews anymore. That's probably also a symptom of PetaPixel demanding a higher volume of reviews and with a number of them being for things that are inherently uninteresting.
And I get it - to some extent, how much is there to say about a 21mm lens? And in that review in particular, they didn't even seem to be doing any basic research before the videos - talking about Thypoch coming out with one (the Simera-C has had a 21/1.4 lens for months already, though with a different design) - and 21mm has been a Leica staple for many years with the 21/1.4 Summilux having been released in like 2008 (which makes sense since Thypoch, to some extent, is emulating Leica with the Simera series). But yet, Chris acted like a 21mm lens was something he'd not heard of before... presumably because he just doesn't care about what he's reviewing anymore. It's a job. Lens comes in, take some photos around Calgary, do some LoCa tests, shoot a test chart or two, lens go out. Ready for the next lens to come in...
But they've also become a channel that won't publish a negative review at all. I had high hopes for the new person - Sarah? But then she did a review of some shitty wearable camera that seemed way more like an advertisement and any criticism mixed in with tons of praise, despite that the footage looked like pure garbage. Then the next week in the Podcast, they acted like people were crazy for suggesting it, given that some small criticism had been slipped in to a 14 minute mostly positive review where the footage is described as "good enough" and since the gross oversaturated colors are "so vibrant there's not much you have to do to them." To me the footage (the link should go right to the sample clips) could be much better described as "a gross, shaky jello-filled nightmare." Later, in the conclusion, the presenter concludes that the camera is definitely worth the $200 price tag, despite that it's redundant with a smartphone and records with quality much worse than a smartphone.
If that shit is sponsored, it's not disclosed and they actively denied it - so that's gross. If it's not sponsored, then PetaPixel's standards on cameras are incredibly different from mine. It was already a thin ice - and posting videos heaping glowing praise on AI slop and deleting critical comments is just the last push that I needed.

andrgl reacted to eatstoomuchjam in The YouTubers are fighting!
Meanwhile, I'm over here starting my own personal beef with PetaPixel. They posted some breathy review of how great it was to make a music video in only one night using Midjourney and I basically said they should stick to photo/video stuff for humans instead of posting about shitty AI slop. The author wrote back saying it was a "complicated" subject.
And now they deleted both of my responses to that - the first, OK, maybe because I wasn't very nice. But in the second, I got more polite and pointed out that with current AI models, 5 seconds of video uses as much power as running a microwave for an hour - so his nearly 4 minute video was like running a microwave for nearly 2 straight days - and that's enough electricity to power an average household in the US for about 2 1/2 days, especially since it's unlikely that he used 100% of the clips that he generated, adding to the amount of wasted power. Deleted again.
I guess, though, it's a good thing since it was the final straw in pulling their feed from my news reader (only so many clearly-sponsored (but not disclosed) positive reviews of shitty plastic film cameras that I can watch) and unsubscribing from the YouTube which has become an increasingly formulaic slog of Chris and Jordan reviewing products that they clearly don't give a shit about - and the weekly podcast where they act like smug celebrities, even though 99.9999% of people neither care who they are nor care about anything they've said.
Good encouragement also to fill out my YouTube subscriptions with some smaller creators who actually seem interested in what they do.

andrgl reacted to Aaliyah in I want Advice on Choosing Between the Fuji X-S20 & Sony FX30 for Video Work
Hey everyone,
I am exploring options for a new camera & want to hear your thoughts. I am leaning towards either the Fuji X-S20 or the Sony FX30 but I am torn between the two.
The Fuji X-S20 seems such as a solid choice with its compact size and user-friendly interface. Plus; I have heard great things about its color science and image quality. want to know if the autofocus performance & video capabilities match up to the Sony FX30.
On the other hand, the Sony FX30 is known for its robust video features and reliable autofocus, which are crucial for my work But I am wondering if its larger form factor & price point are justified compared to the Fuji.
Also i have check this https://www.eoshd.com/comments/topic/75314-a6700-ariba-trainingfx30-sensor-👀/page/6/ still need your advice
Has anyone here used both or have experience with either? I appreciate any insights on their real-world performance for video-centric tasks such as vlogging, interviews & event coverage.
Thank you.....:)

andrgl reacted to Marcio Kabke Pinheiro in Fujifilm X-Half Officially Announced
This camera is not made for us - is for the youngsters that are getting old P&S cameras to experiment something different. If fact, Fuji marketing strategy should be: reach the Tiktokers that created the X100 V and VI frenzy and drop a shitload of money to make this become viral.
Saw some reviews, there are some very lovely things there and a ton of likely mistakes - but as I said, we are not the target group.
- Video: forget, is crap. Less than FHD resolution, bad AF, 30 seconds max. A lost opportunity, goodish video with the film sims would be great.
- Camera is VERY cute and small, but at the same time could have some more "details", have some toyish vibe.
- The interface is very simplistic (kinda a cross of the digital Instax cameras and the current Fujifim menus). The use of the left display for the menu item and the bigger for the itens is intriguing.
- The diptych idea is very neat, but as some reviews said, easier to do in the app instead of doinf it in camera.
- The "film mode" is VERY gimmicky, but could have some traction. Again, the target group will have the veridict.
Biggest problems in my point of view:
- Flash photography is a VERY big use case of the youngsters getting old cameras. They love it. And this camera could NOT use any flash - the camera have a led instead of a flash, and a cold shoe without any connection. Huge mistake - if they don't want to put a proper integrated flash, at least could provide a center pin in the shoe to put an external manual flash. And since the camera is so bad for video and don't have a mic port, don't know how to use this dumb shoe for anything.
- The rear display is very small - and since the younger people probably will use it a lot, could be a problem. In fact, when the rumors started, I said that Fuji should go full Instax mode, making the camera to be designed "vertically". But this would not bring the retro vibes.
- OVF looks good, but have zero infos. Could have some displayed settings.
Biggest problem: the price. A camera with no EVF, very basic AF, with a very small main LCD, very few buttons, no integrated flash, a coldshoe, very basic video, for $850? You can just get a X100T or X100S used for the same price, and is a miles better camera.
I know that it is a "experience" and fun camera, but it should cost much less, around $600. The X-M5 with kit lens is just a tad more. Don't know if the "experience" with this price will get traction. Hope it does - at least is something different.

Genie. Bottle. Too late.
No, in my opinion, from here it's a national existential crisis for the change to happen. Like, mid 19th century stuff.
We got the monied power in the USA angling towards city states. Their ship has a pretty strong wake.
Media is the rudder. And the USA is more of a business than a country.
If there's enough people here to lay down their lives to claw back the ideals of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution, I kinda doubt it. Most don't even understand the founding concepts of this nation much less respect them.
Trump is the idiot that will help speed run this thing, but if not for him then it would be some other puppet. Our culture demands it.

Very good point about services.
So when Dump talks about terrible trade deficits with certain countries, did he forget about Amazon Web Services, Apple App Store, Netflix, VISA, Master Card and Cloudflare?
More to the point.. does he even know what they are? 🙂
Best way to fight fire with fire is for the rest of the world to kick out VISA and to sell all their reserve currency (USD)
Then the Americans would come grovelling to us instead of the other way round.
