Yep that's the kind of intermediary codec that the ZR needs. But only if Nikon doesn't cook it with that aggressive noise reduction. You know the drill, Fuji had similar issues I seem to remember you pointing out.
Thing is, I don't buy cameras based on promised or wishful features anymore. Been burned too many times waiting for "coming soon" updates that arrive late, incomplete, or not at all. So as of right now, the ZR is off the table for me. It's not just the codec situation though tbh, the unreliable view assist/exposure tools and first gen quirks also give me cold feet.
Good to know LT is officially on the roadmap, though.. great for early adopters but I think I'm done gambling on "maybe later".

R3D NE data rate is about 2x of that of N-RAW Normal, which in turn is 2x that roughly expected of Prores 422 LT 4K which is coming to the ZR in a firmware update according to Nikon. So you can get a 75% reduction in data rate compared to R3D NE in a 4K 422 format in the future. Would this be enough to make the camera practical for you? Another possible help is if video editors will be able to make shortened R3D NE files (after cutting) in the future, to save storage space. I imagine this is just a matter of time, if the camera is popular, it will probably be implemented.

I am currently doing my own ZR image testing with footage I shot in every codec and the R3D RAW is beautiful, super rich, super detailed. Probably the best image you can get from a mid priced mirrorless. But then the h265 log conundrum. I just messed around with some log files and they're terrible. Reminds me of 8bit FHD 5D3 footage. Actually the whole camera reminds me of my C200 which had either Canon RAW or 8bit. I hated not having an intermediary codec and its the same scenario with the ZR.
Quite a shame as I love the design, form factor and huge display. But it's basically a massive RAW file camera which isn't going to be practical for a lot of people. I'm headed back to Canon as Sony is in limbo and I don't do L-mount.

NRaw is half the data rates of R3D NE and NRaw files can be saved after trimming, but R3D NE files save without trims, which makes R3D NE 20x more data heavy in worst case scenario.
Started to convert R3D NE files to H.265 with RedLog10 and 500Mbps as a temporary solution. With NRaw there is no need for that.
Z6iii has already good H.265, and IMHO is a better camera with more buttons and good EVF. ZR is just more fun to shoot, but getting WB, exposure and focus right takes a bit more time.
The R3D NE footage does look more pleasing to the eye than NRaw when compared side by side. But without comparison NRaw looks good too.
R3D NE is better in the shadows, but NRaw does not clip so easily in the highlights, so pick your poison based on the shooting scenario you are in. Neither is perfect at the moment, but both can give good results.

I guess you only need a couple of months to inventarise all your socials of the last five years. Is that including public forums like these ?
also, every person you emailed, even if you got a new computer a year ago and do not have your complete history. On top of that all addresses and phone numbers of all family members, best friends, exes and current affairs you might be having. Probably that includes the number of deceased parents or family, if they did that within the last five years.
so we basically need a P.I. to investigate ourselves to get into that shithole the US have become ?
i think I’ll give a pass then …
My guess is tourism will be booming the next couple of decades !

I haven’t been there for a while and was toying with a trip next year.
To paraphrase King Arthur now though.

I think people see politics these days as a form of show-biz entertainment soap opera drama, what a surprise they are going to get when the frogmen smash their door in next.

I had a play with the Nikon Zr today and quite liked it, it's a capable, good value for money Sigma-Fp style camera with very good autofocus and finally a screen with which you can see what is in focus and what isn't. Well done Japan for going large after 25 years of 3.0 inches.
It's the sort of camera that would be very exciting back in the day of the DSLR video revolution to say the least...
Nowadays though, I find other stuff more exciting.
Also the screen tilting mechanism sucks... I'd far rather they'd drop the YouTube vlog-style swivel screens on a camera like this and have a standard tilt screen that is ON AXIS with the fucking lens, and with it being so large it really feels unbalanced stuck out at the side and blocking the ports.
In a way the Zr feels like a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K but done well.
But it doesn't feel very high-end, even if the image is.
Also I miss the EVF and think the Z6 Mark III is even more bang for buck.
So yeah, doesn't set my hair on fire but it's going to be a very decent buy for a lot of people.

The screen is the gateway drug. I am much weaker than @BTM_Pix and after handling one briefly for 15 minutes ordered it 3 days later. It's coming tomorrow. I'm not bothered by the "lackluster" DR results or anything. I also bought it in hopes the firmware updates will add even more value, which is a big no-no but I heard ProRes LT is confirmed coming.

I saw one part when he was saying that it was a little annoying that they did not get exact time remaining for recording. The same guy said that it was totally unacceptable a cine camera did not give exact time remaining on the card. OK, it is written cine, but it is still a 2200 USD camera, and h265 by its nature is variable bit rate. Simple example on a sitting interview with a static background and the bitrate goes a lot lower, while have dynamic shot with lots of movement or movement in the shots and the bitrate goes up drastically.
The just couldn't find any thing to say positive at the camera except about Nikon color and his luts, that he sell!!!

For now as a Nikon shooter, I am more inclined to shoot NRAW and do the renaming trick to R3D, than to shoot R3D as I am finding that the Nraw has more DR than the R3D and you can shoot the normal version that takes only about 370 mbs for 24 fps in 4k and 700 mbs for 6k. This is a little test of conversion of Nev to R3D. You have NEV (Nikon RAw), NEV but using the RED lut, Then the Nev to R3D renaming and finally the REDraw file. then So I need to make a little bit more test, with skin tones etc, but they are quite close to me, even more so that even between the different red cameras like the Raptor and Komodo, their is some color difference. The yellow are a little bit more saturated and the image is a little more toward yellow in the Nikon ZR redraw R3D files. On side by side test the ZR was the more yellowish of the red camera. So it might balance out in the end.

Canon managed to make a slower sensor than ZR sensor, twice the price, with less DR.

If you ask why they don't add another hole to make it more secure on tripod, here is your answer. Its bottom of Z6iii. There is no room for another one lol

andrgl reacted to Jahleh in Nikon Zr is coming
After playing more with NEV to R3D converted Z6iii clips I prefer the Resolve’s NRaw Camera Raw panel controls, especially for adjusting WB, exposure, highlights and shadows.
In Red Raw panel your options are a bit more limited. Chroma NR tab is nice and could be the reason why ZR DR is said to be better, at least it cleans the raised shadows a bit without touching Resolve’s other NR controls.
Tried also to shoot from the hip by using Z6iii’s LCD to mimick shooting with ZR. Hard to imagine how big a difference a 4 inch screen could make compared to 3.2. I guess I am just an EVF shooter, as on my first Canon 550D back in 2010 I had EVF loupe attached, which magnified the LCD 2x and gave additional contact point. But it’s nice Nikon users have now more options to choose from.

Nikon’s Japan site showing official release date there of 24th of October.
That tax inclusive price of ¥299,200 is taking the value for money to another level really isn’t it 😂

andrgl reacted to eatstoomuchjam in Enshittification Full Ahead
Yes, but as long as some people still buy VW and some people buy the upgrade, other car manufacturers will be inspired to do the same. This is how the enshittification race to the bottom works.
It used to be that if I bought a plane ticket on any airline, I got a checked bag for free. Not only that, but overhead space was plentiful and I could be a bit chill about boarding the plane. Then one airline started charging for checked bags. When people didn't stop flying with them, the other airlines followed suit. After all, people are apparently willing to accept a shittier flying experience. Now checked bags cost money and overhead space is crammed full which makes me one of the annoying boarding buzzards circling around the boarding stanchions so that I can be sure to get on in time to put my camera bag above me and not get into an argument with the boarding agent about whether I'm going to gate check it (and no, gate agent, I cannot relocate all of the lithium batteries into my other much smaller "personal item" that goes under the seat in front of me).
Anyway, the shrugging and accepting it is basically what is at the core of enshittification.

And that mount.
Megadap will be rubbing their hands at the amount of E mount lenses that may well be finding a home on this camera.
Not just from Sony defectors either but from new owners of the ZR who look at the plethora of appropriately sized E mount lenses on the new and used market and will consider the ZR as a de facto E mount camera.

It’s the international break.
The world turns to shit when there is no club football.
There is only so much England vs Andorra that people can take.
Everything will be OK again on Saturday.

People here would have dreamed about this camera just two years ago. People were crying for 10 bit and log like 5 years ago, and some people filmed movies with the Gh2 or Canon 5D. I am not saying this camera doesn't have flaws. But saying this is a camera for content creation when you have multiple Raw formats, and one color science that was only available to cameras costing 7k, but more precisely 10 k when you add the accessories in the apsc red komodo, and about 15-20k in full frame.
In fact you can film a movie with this. I am sad it did not happen 10-20 years ago, or I was not 10-20 years younger, thinking about this I prefer the later... Oh shit, looking how the world is going, I prefer the former. LOL

I know the phrase of the day is content creator, but I, personally, see this as the ultimate, low/no budget, DIY, short film camera. I don't think I have ever been so tempted to hit preorder.
I understand its inconveniences and there are a couple things I need to research... battery life (the FP is atrocious), overheating, IBIS quality, etc... but I must say this is the most excited I have been for a camera since I bought my 5D3 and installed ML Raw onto it.
