ntblowz reacted to igorpilot in Leica SL2 now with uncropped internal C4K 10bit 60p L-Log
Massive Leica SL2 upgrade for video with free firmware update to 3.0 was released yesterday.
    1. Internal uncropped 10 bit 50/60 FPS with L-Log. (External recording with Atomos is no longer needed to do this) 😲😲😎
    2. Preset follow focus for smooth focus pulls
    3. Live waveform
    4. LUTs preview
    and other stuff

Clever move by Leica to enable 10bit 60p by moving to H.265 encoding and presumably save enough bandwidth to record 10bit. Downside obviously is H.265 is still a delivery codec, not easily editable and not prores from Atomos. But I’ll take log slomo without a bulky external recorder any day over prores for my non professional needs.

Picked one up last week and finally got to to test it out. It does indeed extend record times and keeps the camera cooler. With the fan set to high in a 75 degree interior I was able to record to a 512 GB CF Express card 3 times with a overheat shutdown but for stopping the test.  That's about 78 mins of 8k raw recording. The Temp icon came on about half way through the 2nd card recording and stays on but the camera doesn't shut down.

ntblowz reacted to Thomas S in Why did Canon remove so many EOS R features on the more expensive EOS R6?
As a long time Panasonic m43 user I actually just upgraded to the Canon R6 and absolutely love it. For me it came down to 100% EF lens support.
The 20 MP completely makes sense t one for the same reason why 12 MP makes sense for the Sony A7S.  It helps sensitivity. The R6 has about a 1 stop advantage over the R5 and even photographers are very happy with the 20 MP stills. The sensitivity gain matters more then the tiny bit of extra detail.  Detail that is debatable how many lenses really take advantage of.
Yes The R6 has some head scratching limitations but I think the amount of hatred is a bit overly dramatic. Its a solid stills and video camera with really good IBIS and really good DPAF. I also have a P4k and while its nice that I'm not limited in what tools and options I have on the P4k the addition of super clean low light, super reelable DPAF and very good IBIS make it a more enjoyable camera to use in many situations.
Every camera out there has flaws. The latest Sony A7S finally has 10bit but its stills suck.  If we are going to complain about 20 MP on the R6 its funny the Sony fans are willing to look the other way for 12 MP stills on the A7S. Most of the other Sony cameras still don't have 10bit.  Talk about outdated thinking.
I didn't realize 4k 60p line skips.  Is that 100% confirmed?   If you look at this review and look at the studio tool the 4k 60p seems to have the same detail as the UHD in the drop down. https://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canon-eos-r6-review/8 Are you sure you didn't do something wrong? I rarely use 4k 60p even on the P4k.  I'm not as obsessed with slow motion as others are I guess.  I also don't really have an issue with the rolling shutter on the R6. Maybe its not as good as other options out there but I rarely run into a rolling shutter issue because I don't whip my camera around. 4k 60p APS-C crop eliminates a lot of those concerns.  Yes it sucks to have a crop but my other camera choice was the Panasonic S5 which can only shoot 4k 60p with a APS-C crop. So technically the R6 having a FF 4k 60p mode is a bonus over the S5 even if it is compromised. I really see no decent affordable option out there for FF 4k 60p 10bit that doesn't have some kind of compromise or much higher cost.
I also find it odd to criticize the RF lens options when I think many EF users will happily use their trusted EF lenses on the camera. EF glass works great on the R6 and there are a ton of EF owners out there.
I am not even close to a Canon fan boy. I have used Panasonic since before the GH1. I owned a Canon XL1 many years ago but that was my last Canon camera.  I used to laugh at what passed for quality from their DSLRs. The HD made me want to vomit I hated it that much. The R6 is the first Canon camera I feel finally gets 4k video right.  Now that it has c.log3 its pretty solid and has a bit better DR. Every camera out there has disadvantages so its silly to only trash one camera. The S5 is an amazing camera but the L mount lenses are insanely over priced and Panasonic only focused on the high end market for glass. Nothing can really be adapted to the L mount either with any hope of video AF. Even adapted stills AF is hit or miss. Thats even assuming one finds value in the contrast detect AF of the S5. Much better than it used to be but still not perfect enough to trust it. Plus I'm just not sure of the future of the L mount and Panasonic. Feels like risky investment at this point and I just cannot afford the L mount lenses I really want.
Sony does make nice cameras but the lack of 10bit is a deal breaker for me and I will not compromise on that. No matter what other features Sony does better its not enough to make up for that. I don't want to have to buy a $4,000 camera body just to get a Sony with 10bit. Thats essentially R5 price territory which arguably does a lot of things better than the Sony A7S. Those with hybrid needs that shoot professional stills and video will never consider a A7S so basically 10bit is a dead end with Sony for those users.
I was about 30 seconds away from getting a Panasonic S5 instead. In the end it was the AF and bleak lens options that killed it for me. I just didn't have $8,000 to invest in a new set of f2.8 zooms and a new body. With the R6 I get 100% perfect performance from my $1,000 Tamron 70-200 f2.8 lens.

Early Sep and I should have 2 to add to my portfolio.
The first is a 3 day American wedding here in France so should be good and is a full hybrid job.
The second 2 days but just stills.
I’m still toying with the exact configuration for hybrid coverage which is when I need 3 cameras; one for static full length stuff, one for roaming video and the third for stills.
In a pinch I can do it with 2 bodies and 2 zooms but there are compromises at key moments especially during ceremonies and that’s the weakness of the 2 camera approach.
3 cameras eliminates the compromise and despite these somewhat cash-strapped times, investing in my portfolio is still my best option.
I’m pretty sure I will run the following:
    S1H + 35mm f2 indoor and in 4K 50p crop mode essentially gives me ‘50mm’ which I find is a look I like.
Switch to the 65mm f2 outdoors for a ‘100mm’ look. I am not and never have been a wider angle user and like to shoot either quite tight but if I want more context, back up to include it, but always with a longer focal length.
Handheld at all times as the S1H IBIS is just superb, unless I need to shoot stills at the same time such as first kiss, confetti etc in which case it quickly slips onto my freestanding monopod.
It’s my workhorse that produces 90% of the material.
Then one S5 gets the 24-105mm f4 and gets welded onto a tripod and does full rolling ceremony, speeches and any entrances, exits, first dance etc.
The second S5 with 28-70mm f2.8 is dedicated to stills and is a relatively lightweight compact and versatile combo and I do tend to switch to crop mode outdoors effectively turning it into a 42-105mm, at least in camera, with the ability to crop back out in post.
I would rather another S1H in this role however as I prefer it’s; build, ergos, dials, buttons, screens and…well everything really. Not to do the S5 an injustice, but the S1H is just better everywhere.
Tweaked natural profile for me also. I’ve tried log and can’t get on with it. Yes, in certain circumstances it can produce a marginally better result but is far too finicky for consistency and even with a decent workflow, a lot more time consuming.

Filmed again with the C70 today and it is very liberating (coming recently from BMPCC and Mirrorless) having it all in one box with great battery life, NDs and superb audio preamps. Colours are easy to work with and the dynamic range is very good.

I have a R5 since October 2020. I had a 1Dx III from march 2020 until two weeks ago, sold it to buy an additional R5.
Never used an R6 so I cannot comment on that.

I basically have 2 custom settings that I use for video: 8k RAW Light 24-30 fps and 4k 120 fps Clog (rarely use Clog3). Rarely I use 4k HQ IPB with no log if I need to give the video for some quick and dirty usage without any further processing.

R5 is imo a much better camera than the 1Dx III:
8k RAW is better that 5.5k RAW not for the resolution (although it give some more room for post zoom and pan) but mostly for the much better rolling shutter 15 ms vs 29 ms
4k 120fps is way way better than the junk 1080 120 of the 1Dx III.
Crop quality is a tad better
    Lightweight, better on Gimbals
Smaller to pack, basically I can take 2 R5 in the space and weight of a 1Dx III, if you add the insane big charger of the 1Dx III you can take a gazillion number of R5 batteries…..
Flippy screen much better on Gimbals and in low angles
45 mpix much better than 20 mpix for photo
    Has zebra
IBIS, IBIS + IS lens allow me to film quite a bit without a tripod, very handy for filming while backpacking for ski, mtb, etc…..
    EF-RF Adapter with VND

    1Dx III is better in:
    No overheating
Initial AF acquisition with long lenses but only for photos in non liveview mode.
Has 5.5 RAW at 60fps but no AF
    Longer battery life
    Same dual card type
More rugged and better weather sealing

The biggest gain for me with the last firmware is the RAW Light that basically give me almost 2x storage. I’m a fan of RAW as it give me more flexibility in post than Clog and Clog3…. is probably me not doing it right but for me is a night and day difference RAW vs. Clog how much more post processing I can do and fix mistakes. Bonus that on my PC the RAW Light file are much easier to edit than 10bit Clog ones.

At the end the only question is if you need long takes and in case that things go south can you live with 4k SQ if the camera would overheat?

In my case it has never overheated in 8K RAW Light in my usage (but it will eventually happen). I got at the limit a couple of times at 30-35° C under the sun shooting at 4k 120 fps, this is the mode that seems to overheats the most.

ntblowz reacted to Video Hummus in 1D X III vs EOS R5 and R6
I have owned the R5 since December of 2020.
I can't speak to the IDXIII, having never owned one, but I do have access to an R6 and have been playing around with that camera for several weeks now.
I still prefer having the R5 over the R6 even after latest FW update for the R6. Mostly because R5 has:
4K 120fps that looks great 8K Canon RAW Lite 45MP stills that look absolutely amazing Custom video modes! Hitting record button in photo mode switches to C3 video (It's switches to fully auto mode in R6, yuck). I use 3 custom settings: 4KHQ 24fps, 4K120, 4K non-HQ on C3. Hitting record button in photo mode jumps to this setting.
The R6 is pretty good but still inexplicable crippled in weird ways–the lack of custom video modes being the biggest one imho. This has been the single biggest pain in the ass when using the camera. You simply can't use it very fast when switching between 24fps or 120fps.
Battery life on the R6 seems to be better than the R5 in cursory usage. I haven't thoroughly tested. Rolling shutter on R6 leaves a lot to be desired. Much prefer the 4K120 out of the R5 to the 1080 from R6. R6 AF shits the bed in moderate low-light situations compared to R5. The R5 has a much better 1.6x video crop mode.
Overheating has not been an issue for me (on either camera) but I don't shoot long form stuff and if I did I would just use the regular 4K mode or a proper cinema camera. Sony is still the better option if you want a small mirrorless camera to record for longer periods of time and with quick recovery times.
Editing performance has not been a problem whatsoever on my M1 MBP. I hear it's painful for a lot of people so if that is you don't get a Canon mirrorless camera until there is widespread support for hardware accelerated H.265 10-bit 4:2:2.
I'm still very happy with getting the R5 over the something from Sony. A7SIII is great but I wanted more MP if I was going FF as I was coming from Micro Four Thirds. I also enjoy the Canon body ergonomics more than Sony and that is pretty important aspect for me.
Things I don't like about RF system as a whole (at time if writing):
Lack of wide angle fast primes (16,18,20mm f1.8 or faster) The RF lens ecosystem is expensive (but there is always EF). No RF Sigma options...yet. Overheating timer is there and could potentially be a problem (it hasn't been for me). Really surprised Canon is releasing major firmware updates with major features. I hope they continue this.

ntblowz reacted to Oliver Daniel in FX3 Mini Review - almost a little marvel
I had a C70 which has a lovely image and an excellent body concept but something was bothering me with it. I couldn’t put my finger on it, but in my gut, something wasn’t right.
I also had an A7SIII at the same time, and still do. The gut feeling that overshadowed my positive view of the C70 might have been the A7SIII. That camera is simply a marvel that I love shooting with. Maybe I enjoyed the sheer flexibility of the A7SIII more, hence the demise of the C70.
I always shoot with 2 bodies. Instead of getting an A7SIII again, I picked up the FX3 as I wanted the XLR’s and the video centric button layout.
When the FX3 was delivered, I was very surprised at how it felt in the hand. I was surprised at how small the XLR handle unit was. The grip feels really good. I was thinking “wow, Sony have nailed this”.
At first, the button layout was confusing as I’m used to the A7SIII. It still trumps me now as it has a function where you can lock your shutter, ISO or IRIS and I keep forgetting it does that. So I always have a few sections feeling frustrated when the values aren’t changing, because I’ve forgot they are locked. 😂
The camera is identical to the A7SIII, minus the body design. Everything is the same.
I use it with the Ninja V which is a powerful combo for this size. It feels amazing handheld without the XLR handle and the Tilta cage but with the XLR handle it does feel a little clunky and unbalanced in the hand. Now when I’m handheld, I don’t use the XLR handle unless I’m recording some audio with a handheld look, which isn’t that often. On a tripod, it’s fine.
Capturing shots with the FX3 is very liberating. You can do pretty much anything with it without lugging a brick around. Some people like to rig it up but for me, it’s just very unnecessary with a body this size.
The image itself is fantastic. What I will say is that it won’t perform miracles for you. People have this misconception the FX3 or A7S3 will light an image for you. No, it won’t. Stop being lazy, feed the camera what it needs and it will shine.
Again, Slog3 won’t perform miracles. It takes practice, patience and resilience. It isn’t the best between 3200 and 12,800 ISO. To shoot at these high values is a bonus but the best image is SLOG3 640 ISO, so to get great results, shoot for that as much as possible.
The FX3, just like the A7S3, does have superb colour capability. If you don’t WB, or expose correctly or nail your focus, it would look like garbage. It is not forgiving, you can’t be lazy. I can match this very easily to the C70 - I couldn’t do that with previous Sony cameras.
Using both Alpha cameras together is extremely powerful and liberating. When treated and operated correctly, and not lazily used to perform miracles, the image you can achieve is just fantastic.
Peoplr saying these cameras are conservative and underwhelming need to re-check their opinions. Sony gave us almost everything in pristine 4k and it delivers. They are unique on the market in terms of feature set, and it shows.
Most importantly, the FX3 as a step forward in camera concept for cinema application is the right one. It’s exciting to work with and getting great shots isn’t a pain in the arse or a cripple on your back.
What I would like to see in the next version is the FX3 and A7S3 to merge into one camera offering with:
    - On-sensor ND or similar tech.
    - A thicker image in feel and robustness. Not bothered about 6k or 8k, just even better 4k please.
    - A larger back LCD.
    - A flip up EVF like BMP6k Pro.
    - An improved XLR unit that is more modular when used with accessories.
    - Possibly both an IBIS and non- IBIS version.
If they deliver the above, that would be near perfect.

These guys pretend they don't get "paid" by Sony. But they get all the gear they want from them, newly released gear to review, lenses to test/sample, in exchange for positive reviews. They might not be told to write a positive review, but good luck getting more gear if you trash them.
Sony knows who to send gear to, because they know these youtubers are desperate to continue to receive gear to review.
Sony gear videos get higher views on youtube so its the brand they want to continue to pimp.
So yes they might not be "paid" by sony, but by getting all this gear to test and review from sony for free, it saves the reviewers thousands of dollars. Youtubers are the new age used car salesman.

My first thought when reading the announcement was, "if Fuji didn't exist this would be right up there with the (terrible) APS-C offerings from Sony and even Canon."
I think if it were cheaper it would sort of make sense, but $1k is way too high when the XT-3 is not much more. Same with the Z6, but compared with the S1 and S5. And the problem with a direct Z50 clone but in fashionable colors is that it doesn't appeal to anyone with price or quality, who wasn't already interested in the Z50. A higher or lower quality/price bracket would have been more exciting.
But you're right, maybe the weekend photographer crowd who doesn't shoot video will buy it up. I hope it works out for Nikon, I'd love to see a serious, higher spec camera from them either in APS-C or FF, and if this is the way to get funds, then good for them. Overall though I am not optimistic about this or Nikon's other releases.
