If it is a BSI sensor - what advantages would that have?

At 25MP the pixel pitch is quite small so I would assume BSI would help here by increasing surface area on sensor to capture light.

Not sure if it is a stacked design or not.

It is a very interesting development if it turns out not to be manufactured by Sony. Sony doesn’t have any cameras with the dual gain simultaneously readout. Makes me think there is an association/collaboration with Canon or whoever makes ARRI sensor.

Panasonic's excuse for not implementing PDAF seemed quite poor and hard to believe.

Yeah, I honestly had my mouth open the whole time in disbelief that they were running with that line again. Oh, well.

I encourage everyone to watch Media Division.

Gerald's video has a very weird tone. I can't tell if he is sad its not a FF Sony camera or that he knows he just burnt his relationship with Panasonic? Very different from his usual product tours and testing of other cameras. Oh well. Media division did an awesome job actually using the camera and telling us about its features and problems.

@Andrew Reid what are your thoughts with it so far?

    It is.

The Olympus/OM Systems UK rep myself and several other potential customers were talking to yesterday said Oly/OM had already sold all of the first (March) shipment into the UK of OM-1 bodies (and most of the body+lens kits).

I suspect a lot of those are sales to existing Oly owners upgrading (as you would expect) but hopefully this bodes well for future sales.

I'm honestly wondering if the name, OM-1 and also it being said as being the last camera with the Olympus badge on the front is helping to sell it. Kinda sad knowing this, but also makes me want to have it as a MFT option for shits and giggles.

Decision made: S1H + S5 (plus some lenses) outbound, pair of OM-1's inbound.

Nice! Looking forward to hearing your experience with the OM-1.

From what I have seen, the video AF on the OM-1 is pretty solid. Honestly, the OM-1 has been made 3x more interesting BECAUSE Panasonic didn't put PDAF in the GH6. It's still a pulsing mess from the leaked video.

I still think OM Systems could capitalize on this by releasing a more video focused camera that has PDAF. I'm sure a lot of GH5 users would take notice.

I wish the camera companies would recognise the importance of this mechanism and put it in.

    Canon C70 manages it.

    FS5 does it.

It's the Japanese obsession with small widgets that stops it from going into mirrorless cameras.

Just make them 10% bigger and be done with it.

I bet if they just took the S1H body, swapped the sensor with MFT one, and removed the shutter they would have plenty of room for a ND. Call it the GH6S. It would probably sell like crazy.

  7. 13 minutes ago, kye said:

Is there room in an MFT mount for an eND?  I have no idea how thick those things are.

Canon has a physical ND in the 20mm RF flange of C70. I think its pretty clear they can put NDs (especially an eND) into typical mirrorless flange distances when the shutter is removed.

    Sony will do it first.

It was Jane Bown's camera too: https://www.anatomyfilms.com/jane-bown-65-years-with-olympus/

I've been a Jane Bown fan forever, and it's worth reading the article to learn about her minimalist approach: she took some of the most memorable portraits of the 20th century, all with natural light (she never carried a flash), never used a light meter, and brought her two cameras (one with a Zuiko 50mm and the other with a Zuiko 85mm) to her shoots in a shopping bag.

Great article. Thank you for sharing. I really admire her no fuss process. Very refreshing and inspiring in todays tech obsessed gear shit show.

I think the ARRI / Canon method is basically a frame blend too.  They've just done a much, much better job of marketing it!

Well the DGO method is using hardware and the other method is doing two different exposures at different shutter speeds and then blending them. I think ZCAM tried to do this and this is also what phones are doing with fast shutter speeds and fast readouts (looks bad in my opinion).

  10. OM-1 is launched. It's a homage of sorts to the film OM-1 from Olympus. It's a great M43 photography camera for landscapes, wildlife, adventure travel photography.

Now launch "OM-1X" pivoted from a pro level MFT sports body (dead market) to pro level video body with new and improved 12-35, 35-100 F/2 43rd lenses revamped and redesigned for MFT. Focus on practical video focused utilities like:

    • false color
    • waveforms
    • LOG
    • great look and feel of image

Hit the few key specs like oversampled 4K up to 120p, PDAF, 10-bit, no overheating or record limits. Push unique Olympus features like enhanced IBIS modes and live IBIS feedback assist tools for video.

Ok, let's do a fact check on this one. MFT vs FF.

    1. Olympus 12-100 f4 - 1300$

    1. Tamron 28-200 f2.8-5.6 - 729$. Same weight.. but in terms of m43 it has f1.2-2.8 aperture! And its almost half the fricking price! Nice macro capabilities as well.

Not exactly the same but I see your point.

Isn't this extremely similar to how Canon DGO (or Arri equivalent) works?

I believe the ARRI and Canon DGO method is reading two gain circuits at the same time.

Kinda sounds like they are doing frame blending from a super fast readout.

I think it is suicide at the price point they have. Even 2K sounds a bit high.

I agree, it is a bit pricey. There is savings in the lenses that should be taken into account.

    I think a OM-1 + 12-100 f/4 + 7-14mm f/2.8 would make a sweet, light kit for people adventuring or want a light setup.

This cannot be understated in terms of build quality. Another way to read it from the other manufacturers is: "Sure, we have a weather-sealed camera, just don't use it as a weather-sealed camera." I still remember the imaging resource tests of the "weather-sealed" options from Canon, Nikon, Sony, and Olympus. Olympus E-M1 ii was great and it still didn't even have the rating then. The Sony A7r iii did the worst (must have been the camera's consumer electronics heritage). Now, all the E-M1 iii, E-M1x, E-M5 iii, and OM-1 cameras have IPX or IP53 ratings.

I believe they rated the EM1X as IPX1 which is still essentially a really low rating and still gives them an out on the warranty of use.

IP53 on the other hand is a guarantee this thing could handle blowing rain from multiple angles and it won't get damaged and they stand behind that claim and not some vague "weather sealed" (unless you something more than a sprinkle of rain gets on it) kinda of BS.

contrast vs phase IMO, but simply one of whether it works or not that is the issue.

Nailed it. They can maybe get away with DfD in the GH6 but if their next FF S-series camera does not offer a major upgrade to AF reliability, consistency, and performance then I am of the opinion LUMIX will be on its way out. We now have cheaper cinema level cameras available with less need to buy something like the S1H for cheaper and put up with its limitations. Other video people, driven mostly my YT'ers, will buy something with amazing AF like a Sony or Canon, and maybe even Fuji.

It is literally the only feature that matters for them. They have all the rest. But it will remain a mystery why they don't put PDAF in their cameras.

At this point it would make a good investigative documentary.

  16. Finally, a camera manufacture willing to slap a IP rating on their "weather sealed" camera and stand behind it!

IP53 is a pretty good guarantee of protection. The rating says it is essential highly resistent to dust ingress (but not dust tight; no ingress) and can handle spraying water—think lightly blowing rain from all angles or a low pressure garden sprinkler.

Definitely not a "wow" camera but decently solid. Like @John Matthews said I will probably pick up this camera and perhaps the 12-100 f/4 and a f1.2 prime for a "ultralight" camera kit now that it has 10-bit internal up to 4K60p.

I'm more interested in the fast and light stills performance. The HiRes handheld without a tripod, handheld or monopod astro abilities, etc...

GH6 still no PDAF...more DfD "fast" AI technology. I guess I will hold my beer awhile longer to see how that turns out.

If you mean the electronic architecture, compared to the EM1 Mk 3, they've doubled the video throughput (4k 60p versus 4k 30p, FHD 240p versus 120p), added HEVC compression, gone to 1053 AF points (was 121), added more 'Ai' AF subject recognition (from the EM1X), made both card slots UHS II capable (was one UHS II + one UHS I), doubled the viewfinder resolution etc.

Nothing ground-breaking, but seems a fairly major upgrade by Olympus standards 🙂

True I guess. It also depends on what the Sony MFT sensor can do. I just expected 4K120p or more since it’s 20MP stacked sensor.

Well, here is hoping we see some solid DR and performance out of the latest MFT sensors going into these cameras. I think they are still at 14-bit.

Given the development and production lead times involved in bringing something like this to market, plus it's using a new sensor and a new/heavily upgraded processor, I think that's almost certain.

Yeah, I agree. However, it appears they didn’t really change the architecture at all from the EM1.3.

I wonder if their licensing of the Olympus trademark requires ongoing payments, which JIP wants to cease.

Depends on the contract of the license but it will either be installed payments per year or quarter or it could be a % of sales of each unit sold.

  20. Sony use to own stock in Olympus but sold it back I believe several years ago. Will be interesting to see if OM System will fizzle or if they will be acquired. You would think Panasonic would be interested but their camera division is probably not high on the totem pole to the rest of the company interests since the market has constricted.

I'm still very interested in the latest OM-1 camera. I have a feeling it was already a blueprinted product at Olympus and very little changes were made since the spin off company from Olympus.
