I am more pumped for this release than anything else right now honestly! Blackmagic usually delivers the goods.

I wish the Sigma FP had full hdmi out.

The R6 would be gimbal cam for me, which is always gonna be short takes.

That said I might as well get a 1DX MK3. I could use that as a gimbal camera and a camera for any other application (long record times general reliability). Plus it has RAW recording internal.

    I mean I guess buying a R6 plus something like a Pocket 6k or GH5S is still cheaper than a 1DX MK3.

I feel its not that uncommon for a Hybrid to be used as a gimbal camera. Just was on a show with a FX9 as A cam and A73 as B camera and Gimbal camera. Depends on how high end the show is I guess. Probably not really a thing in most narrative stuff(the pro stuff at least).

All this stuff is mostly catering to the lower end of things I feel like.

Record limits suck, but its not the end of the world to just press record again. We've all been dealing with 15-20 minute record limits on many cameras. Overheating though is an issue because you can't just press record again if the camera is powered off from overheating and needs 15 minutes to cool down.

Sounds like their are resolution options that don't overheat so its really not bad. Who shoots at over 4k 30p for most stuff anyways? Lots of people do so they'll just have to get something else.
I am really thinking about getting an R6 plus Ninja V. Having something with reliable auto focus and 10 bit is huge for under 3k.

If Fuji can up their Auto Focus game I'll gladly throw my money their way. That goes for Panasonic or Blackmagic!

The people who modded the A6300 to work with a fan had to actually open up the camera for the fan to be effective. I'd imagine it would be the same with this. I guess its doable under decent conditions (dust or rain would kill it).
External recorders work to bypass overheating on Sony cameras though so I am sure its the same with this. The Ninja V is only $500, not too bad. Then you get Prores which is superior for editing anyways.
Its just unfortunate the R6 can't handle the same as its quite a bit cheaper and makes more sense for most people's needs.

    Product segmentation, perhaps?
I think there has been 4 important aspects of the R5 release:
    1) internal RAW took a baby step to becoming mainstream.
    2) 10-bit 4:2:2 Log recording is the new baseline.
    3) 4K HFR (anything higher than 60p) is the new slow motion benchmark.
    4) You no longer need gloves in the winter when operating your mirrorless camera.

It's hilarious. For years Canon have been the conservative ones, telling us they are not doing this or that for reliability reasons or waiting to get it bullet proof.
Holding back on video specs to avoid reliability problems has been the Canon mantra!
Then they do a complete U-turn on reliability just to put an 8K badge on the box 😂
    The EOS R5 is a pro's camera. It isn't a $1000 A6300 toy.
If it lets you down on a shoot that is a total disaster and something no pro would consider working around.
How would you work-around it anyway? An icepack? A nice breeze? Put it in the same bucket as the lobster in the catering tent?

Nikon is way better than the recent Sony offerings. However the Z6 was also introducing a new mount. I feel like most Nikon shooters are just sticking with the old DSLRs which have superior IQ and AF for stills. It wasn’t compelling enough for a new shooters to pick them over Sony or Canon Panasonic.

My camera isn't built up at the moment.
But the principle is get the camera as far back on your shoulder as possible, most builds I see are far too front heavy. And I use arri rosettes as much as possible, as they firmly lock into place.

    Edit:
Just found this picture of me from four years ago shooting a short film with the F3, this isn't how I'd rig it up today, but gives you at least a rough rough idea:

thebrothersthre3 reacted to KnightsFan in truth about Pocket 6k dynamic range
@thebrothersthre3 Thanks for the files. I've played around with them a little bit. It's so close, I can't definitively say one looks to have more DR than the other. I do think that, although the FPN is subjectively displeasing in motion, the actual amount of noise looks slightly less on the Ursa... though it's obviously hard to say. One really interesting thing is just how different the colors are. The Ursa is very magenta. I can definitively say that from these images, I like the P6K version better.
Just to go back against the other measurement, C5D puts the P6K at 11.8 in 6k at ISO 400, and the Ursa 4.6K at 12.5 when the 4.6k is downscaled to UHD in ISO 800. That's gotta be really close if you also downscale the P6K to UHD. Also worth noting that they measured at 400 instead of 800. I don't know which way that would change things--you'd expect worse DR in a non-native ISO, but it could also have different noise reduction. So overall I'd caution against saying this disproves the other measurement, but it is evidence against the Ursa having more DR than the P6K at any given setting.

The other thing I will say about latitude is that while latitude does not equal DR, its is true that if Camera A has both more over- and under-exposure latitude than Camera B, then Camera A also has more dynamic range (discounting subjective opinions on one having a "nicer" noise pattern).

The info outside the window was because I pulled down the highlights on the Ursa CDNG footage. With the Pocket 6k BRAW there is no option for highlights so I left it alone.

Its a very unscientific test. Both cameras were set at 800 iso, 180 degree, F2.8. Then I blasted a 300w LED directly at my face 7 feet away. The idea was just to dramatically over expose and see which could bring back more detail. Same deal with the under exposed image.

Post adjustments were just using the exposure slider. I believe I brought down the over exposed image 5 stops and brought the under exposed image up 4 stops. I didn't use the highlight recovery box.

I am uploading the RAW files to Google Drive right now. I'd like to do a more scientific test and also use my XT3 in photo mode to see how they pair against those RAW files. But this test shows me what I was looking to see, which holds more highlight information and has more usable shadows.

Don't dynamic range and latitude directly correlate to each other tho? A sensor with more dynamic range will have more latitude and vice versa?

Could be for sure. When it was first announced I was super excited. I thought it was going to be shooting video similar to what my XT3 can do in RAW stills. It turns out that is close to being true.

I've seen a lot of threads discussing Pocket 6k vs something higher end, and the lower dynamic range is always brought up. But it turns out the Pocket 6k is right up there with the C500 MK2 even the Alexa.

Certainly there are advantages to an alexa or RED helium but its really getting slimmer and slimmer. The URSA G2 form factor, rolling shutter, form factor, and 4k 120fps and all still big advantages. But for me rolling shutter is rarely an issue and I am usually ready to take a hit on most things to put dynamic range at a priority.

This is a very strange one to me. I've seen online tests as well as examples from shoots I've been on of the Pocket 6k having really great dynamic range. Yet Blackmagic claims it has less dynamic range than the Ursa Mini and the same dynamic range as the Pocket 4k. Cinema 5d measured it at 11.9 stops while measuring the Ursa at 12.6.

I tested the Pocket 6k against the URSA, both at 800 iso and the Pocket had more highlight and shadow information, by a good amount. If the Ursa has 12.6 stops of dynamic range the Pocket 6k has got to have over 13 maybe 13.5.

I'll probably post the tests if anyone is interested.

Will post up on Google Drive. Its not the best test in the world but it does demonstrate the Pocket 6k's greater dynamic range. I set both cameras to the same ISO, aperture, and shutter speed and used a 300w LED to clip the subjects face and see which could pull back more highlights. Then we did a rough shadow test. The URSA seemed to be on par with the Pocket shadow wise but you got the vertical fixed noise, which ruined it.

Hopefully I can get them up today or tomorrow.

My first indication was @Juan Melara Alexa Powergrade thread. He tested it against the Alexa and found the P6K had more highlight information. Then I saw someone posting how the Pocket 6k has more dynamic range than the RED helium.

haha yeah for sure. I feel like Blackmagic doesn't market their cameras well enough lol. They should put out their own dynamic range charts or tests against other cameras. The Pocket 6k would clean the floor with almost anything imho.
