leslie got a reaction from Alt Shoo in What cameras are you currently shooting with?
mr reid has given them every opportunity to succeed, statistically sony have had 7 bites at the cherry and still lag behind in percentages.
make of that, what you will !
theres a base of 30000 forum readers, 36 votes is embarrassing. It seem like bloody hard work to engage any of them in any sort of activity on the forum ?
Maybe mr reid should have added a { i desperately want a cinema camera category } for the other 29964 others or perhaps their all out vlogging ?

Even Northrup videos will take hours and hours to make I'm afraid.
(many of my quick and dirty sh*tty youtube videos that I do myself for "Sound Speed!" could still be around an hour each once you add up every little aspect, and they're about as terrible as you can get when it comes to minimal effort put into them)

leslie got a reaction from heart0less in 2020 Petition to Stop Using the Word “Bokeh” Forever
blur may encompass some of what bokeh is about but thats only half of the equation. Telling the dop to blur all that background shit out and well call it a wrap, seems a bit half assed to me. No matter what field of endevours your involved in, be it law, welding, film there is an aspect of technical jargon that needs to be learned so that everyone is on the same page.
It kinda frustrates me that people want to master their craft, yet can hardly put an effort into the language side of things. I'm willing to bet good money, that if you have a good director he'll be able to articulate his thoughts, present them in a manner thats sits comfortably with all. that's not an english lesson, that's art.
remember double points the next time you play scrabble ?

These cameras are designed to be used in a professional capacity.
They tend to assume that people using them will not routinely make the mistake of shooting a f/8 instead of f/2.8 (ie: 3 stops underexposed).
Same reason why these cameras don't have aggressive NR like the consumer cams do - they assume you'll be using lights and managing your exposure to prevent noise. The downside is that they are less forgiving when you do make mistakes. But, really... 3 stops under? How? When?

Let’s keep it simple.
You have 60s.
So that’s 12 x 5s shots. No interviews - just 5s shots. You have to choose the 12 shots. It needs an introduction - so why not start at the town sign?
What impression of your town do you want to convey? Is it peaceful and picturesque? Frantic? Modern or traditional architecture? Is the town best represented by day or night or both?
It’s almost like sending 12 (moving) postcards.
If you make the film and I watch it, what do you want me to think?
Don’t try to shoot 12 perfect 5s shots in the field. Take extra and edit. But don’t take 30 mins of footage either as it’ll be too difficult to edit down. So do some forward planning - 12 “locations” (12 places to stick your tripod or stand or whatever).
The time for thinking is over. Get out and do it. And post it here for us all to see.
And ENJOY IT (or why bother...)

leslie got a reaction from Dustin in Affordable speed booster for E Mount
not sure whether you have seen this or not but mattias burling did a comparison between a couple of speedboosters
I bought the cheap villtrox nikon nf to mft adapter just so i could mount the tokina 28-70 in nikon mount to the p4k, later i bought the vilttox ef-m2 speedbooster with a cheap dumb adapter i can mount the nikon to the speedbooster or i can mount m42 lenses with another cheap adapter. The only thing i can add is that i find the thumbscrew tighteners on the tripod socket foot to be a bit wriggly, never seem to tighten sufficiently for me. Buying the ef mount would certainly add some flexibility for later

leslie got a reaction from Zach Goodwin2 in Stuff Made Before 1920 Is Now Royalty Free
No idea how royalties or copyright works. Seems to me youtube has to be getting away with murder with the amount of people doing "covers" and the music sometimes associated with some videos. Technically is that not an infringement ? While in principle i agree with the concept of artists getting their due. I mostly buy cd's so you cant really not pay royalties but i suspect the royalties may be a bit steep if i wanted to use a song in some sort of video, which would probably stifle things somewhat.
Getting back on topic i think i could do something creative with the 1812 overture or ride of the valkeries but classical gas is still copyrighted as well as everything from the 1080's. You know by the end of the 80's all the best notes had been used up. Stuff that came after that might have had a beat or bass but i'm not sure you could call it music. ?
sadly its all academic, well all be long dead before its free to use creatively?

Happy New Year lens friends...
I have successfully whittled down my collection to a reasonable number and after my shoot the other day, I took a few more shots with the Samyang 50mm 1.4.
This lens has been on the chopping block so many times, I now root for it as the underdog of my collection, but as BTM has said a bunch of times before... Samyang lenses punch a lot more than their weight.

leslie reacted to KnightsFan in Orange and Teal look deep dive
The main thing with creating a look is to do it with set design, props, and lights, rather than in post. Taking a random, colorful scene and pushing the colors to be teal and orange will look fake, whereas a thoughtful image composed of a nice balance of teal and orange props with lighting to match will look natural but stylized. Just to pull some random examples from Google images:
This looks fake: https://images.app.goo.gl/ss12w9oiff1gkoh49
These all look fake: https://images.app.goo.gl/UhkK4WPkANy8ujVv9
This looks natural using natural light: https://images.app.goo.gl/9b5pGmxKUfvB7nMaA
This also looks natural using Hollywood lights: https://images.app.goo.gl/VjMp9oaK4JvLUXDN8
The other aspect worth mentioning is that for any complementary color scheme, you usually do not want equal shares of the two colors. Usually with teal and orange that means more teal than orange because then the small amount of orange (which is often human skin) pops out.

My smallest yet.
Canon 50D + Voigtlander 50/2.8 (DKL mount) + YashicaScope + Aivascope Focuser 8 ( + lots of adapters from china + rapido to have the yashicascope held properly)

leslie reacted to fuzzynormal in Orange and Teal look deep dive
That's the basics.
Dial it in however you want, you're essentially pulling colors around in the mids. Making warmer in the upper mids, cooler in the low mids. The dark and bright stay clean, even desaturated to taste.
I've never done a deep dive into being a colorist, just looked at stuff and pulled things around to my liking. Very dillitante'ish, as usual.
Still have the first video I really gave it a go at the technique, shot over 10 years ago on an actual video camcorder using dem dere videos tape thingies we used to have.

art imitates life, which imitates art, does it not ?
for a cinematography forum its almost a chicken or egg thingy ? i dont have an issue getting arty if it provokes creativity or moves us away from which is the best camera and why its the best. The whole youtube camera verses camera thing bores me too death. Much more interesting for me, is seeing what can be done with them. I'm interested in the orange/teal look as well So i'll be jumping on the band wagon, not so keen on doing much in post and not having a lot of coin this xmas i confined myself to half a dozen gel filters. No lights yet ? but my brother owes me money, if he comes through in the next couple of weeks, i'll getting the sirui anamorphic and some other bits and pieces.
