Phil A got a reaction from markr041 in Why are modern TV's defaulted to horrible settings out the box?
Because it's not supposed to be "to your liking", it's supposed to be as specified. There's a reason we have things like Rec709, etc. The TV should come with those set, then people can bend them to their liking (frame interpolation, contrast on max, etc.).
I wonder how people feel who professionally color grade stuff for cinema when they see it played on consumer TV sets. People here hate on Sony because the colors aren't perfect and then think it's perfectly fine that TVs/computer monitors/mobile phones show everything completely distorted anyway?
I'm still stuck with my 2008 Panasonic plasma TV that I setup as good as I could while using a display probe (incl. output LUT in Davinci Resolve, etc.). The picture is great and it tremendously decreases my pleasure of watching movies at my friend/family's places.

Phil A reacted to OliKMIA in DPReview appears to be transitioning into a FStoppers / Petapixel type shithole
I just started to write for Fstoppers as a "staff writer" in July and here is my modest and humble opinion about the situation.
    1. Business model: You get what you pay for. DPR, Petapixel, Fstoppers and many other websites are free so the money must come from somewhere. Unfortunately it seems that adding more articles is the way to maintain of visits, views, thus revenues in a depressed ads market. The money problem is general and affects the entire media/press industry. People got use to free news and it's very hard to transition to the payed premium model. If someone has the solution, I'm listening. Many blogger or Instagramers have more followers than the Washington Post and DPR. There is a big revolution going on whether we like it or not and traditional media are loosing grounds. I agree with the dumbing down spiral of internet but this is also a consequence of the society we live in were the average level of education if going down the toilet and we have a generation of narcissist kids subjugated by their selfies and likes. For having experience in the food industry, food writers used to be kings, then they got beaten up by bloggers and now it's all about Instagram. I guess people are too lazy to read a short review now. Cute low resolution images with Fujifilm like filters is what sells. Up to the point were even chefs now design their menu and dishes based on "how good it looks on IG".... And the list of fucked up thing could go on such as the NDA tactics where some brands (mostly in electronic world) slice the disclosure announcement of a product overtime with various release date to maintain the public attention for more than 24 hours until another news killed the previous one.
    2. My motivation to become a writer at Fstoppers: I started to write at Fstoppers because I'm very active on many forums and FB groups. When I saw the "job offer" I decided to apply because I though it would be nice to spend some of my forum/facebook groups time on writing actual articles for "real" media. For your information, the money is not my main motivation and it's very little by the way. I'm also tired of endless sterile debate on FB or Forums. I don't have the ambition to change the world, I'm just a small guy and I try to stick to my area of expertise. So far I haven't had any issue with the editors and they always accepted my articles. Actually one of my first article was questioning the Canon conservatism. I'm not sure how long I will do this but for now it's interesting. For instance this "position" allowed me to interview Tom Lowe about Awaken and he gave me a lot of technical info.
    3. Type of photo website: To be honest I'm a little bit disappointed by the DPR move because they are known for their depth reviews. But like anybody else, it's a corporation with a bottom line, staff on payroll, server fees, etc. It's own by amazon and the guys at the accounting department probably asked for some change. Personally I don't think there is anything wrong with DPR and Petapixel or even the rumors blogs. I usually check them all and do my due diligence. They all fall in a specific range of information. Petapixel and Fstoppers publish some interesting tutorial and short news (and yes, some clickbait, no one does it right, not even here?). Most of the time the rumors stuff is crap but sometime I find interesting info. Everyone bitch about them but many of us check them out anyway.  Let's no be hypocrite here... many threads and article here were started via rumors dot com links.
    4. Repost: after two month at Fstoppers I try to publish original content but sometime I got busy (and yes, lazy) and I decide to do a quick repost. A repost at Fstoppers is not a shameless copy/paste steal, just a short introduction of an article/video to invite the reader to visit the original content. I don't see anything wrong about it. We actually receive a shitload of emails everyday from people asking to repost their work/tutorial/guest article. When I spot something interesting, I do a small repost article.
    5. The future of Internet and note to Andrew: Unfortunately I don't think that Facebook or Google care much about what we think. Andrew can demand what they "should do" or how internet should be but nobody care... They are huge international cash machine with advanced corporate tax and legal optimization systems. They are not cool and don't care about values and moral despite some green-washing and PR campaigns to look nice. We can create a 10, 100 or 1000 forum threads about it but nothing will happen beyond our tiny and confidential community. They'll start to something the day it make the headline of USA todays and see some impact on their stock (before that they'll probably spend millions in lobbying to bend the law making process)
Andrew, I sent you a couple of emails with request for interview on Fstoppers. Not that I want to steal your content to get views (I could do quick clickbait repost for that) but because I appreciate your work ethic and deep technical knowledge. You make a lot of valid comments and I 'd like to give you more exposure. Not that you need me anyway but I thought I could help at my modest level.
    Regards

    Hi
With regard to V30, V60 and V90 cards, these specify a minimum write speed, regardless of the state of card (fragmentation, erased state etc) which is the important bit of course for real-time recording, so will be lower than the headline marketing speeds.  Also it is important to note that to obtain these guaranteed minimum speeds these cards need to be written to using a different protocol, and the card itself needs to specifically support this protocol as well as the camera (of course the GH5 does).  This means buying a card that doesn't show the V rating, because it appears fast enough based on it's other speed ratings  or some website bench-marking, is not the best route to take and will likely see problems.

So after all the discussions here and always seeing Kidzrevil's stuff on social media, I'll give the diffusion filters a try. Got a Warm Black Pro Mist 1/8 off eBay for 28€ incl shipping. Should arrive today and I'll give it a spin on the weekend. Wish I had thought of getting a step-up adapter already to use it on the Voigtländer, for now I'll try with the Olympus 12-40 2.8.
In unrelated note, we have now bought way more native m4/3 lenses than I wanted. My girlfriend hogs all the lenses I like but the 17.5mm 0.95 (she doesn't dig the manual focus). We now have the Panasonic 14mm 2.5, 25mm 1.4 and 42.5mm 1.7 and especially with the GX80 the size of the system is really neat.

Phil A reacted to silvertonesx24 in Kinemini 4k – whats the story?
I owned a Kinemini and now own a few KineMax.
The KineMax is a significant upgrade over the Kinemini in every way. Obviously resolution, color science, and usability. The Terra 6K uses the same sensor in a smaller format. Dynamic range in the "golden" mode is insane. My DP (owner of alexa mini) was blown away by our ability to shoot subjects directly against a bright sky.
Cineform Raw >>>>>> every other codec out there. Lossless raw at smaller file sizes than Prores and I can cut 6K raw even on a first gen i7.
The cameras are rock solid. Never an issue. Never a crash. I had one big problem on set once not getting it to recognize the SSD, but that was because I was using 7mm instead of the 9mm SSDs that the slot is built for. Yes you have to deal with crappy Chinese support and sending it back to Bejing to fix anything so if that's not for you, don't even consider them.
Now, cinema cameras will be a pain in the butt if you're 'upgrading' from DSLR, so the GH5 and the 5D come out to shoots way more than the Kinefinity stuff. But that's a different argument.

Phil A reacted to Mattias Burling in Kinemini 4k – whats the story?
I have to be honest here. There is always alot of talk about how these cameras are way better than that camera etc. But never any footage. Never any reviews. Never any first hand experience.
Where is this certainty that its so good coming from? Who is the source?
I remember some BS argument when they missed the release date with a year or so. The lack of cameras was said to be because that they couldn't fill orders and all cameras went to the high end Chinese production houses and they didn't have internet or something... give me a break.
I guess Im confused because on this forum their cameras have been brought up in "which camera should I buy threads" as if they've always existed. When in fact they have rarely been for sale at all.
I don't know how many times I've seen the recommendation to buy a "battle tested" camera from them. Well Ive been on that waiting list for almost two years... lol.
I just dont see how this borderline vaporware can be so easy to recommend and compared with so little to no info about using them.
I see about 50 videos on YouTube from recently. On three different models. One or two reviews. And thats from several years.
Personally I wouldn't take my chanses on this and instead go save with a bigger brand. But that's just me.

Phil A got a reaction from Cinegain in Kinemini 4k – whats the story?
That was a rather silent announcement. And it has a 1.85 crop, so slightly smaller sensor than s35 / APS-C. At US $3,999, it probably has to be rather good in first reviews to be a new, better alternative to the KineMini 4k or the BMD  Production Camera 4k.
I think they lost all hope to enter "western" markets when they completely dropped the ball on their Terra 5k, making their reputation even worse. They announced it April 2016, had some prototype thing this April but I'd bet we still won't see it in April 2018. That actually breaks my heart because the Terra 5k was the only dedicated video camera I was interested in so far (we can easily ignore the Craft camera that never made it out of render stage), seeing the form factor with the hand grip.

Just 2 papers which question the wisdom of blindly applying animal models to a human context. UG stuff. Totally irrelevant to these fora but you did ask.
The fact that you "studied" something is irrelevant. I have studied the spec sheet of a Red epic. Does that make me an "expert" in the art of  cinematography? On your logic, yes. I wish!
Your approach to the scientific method is flawed. A good scientist presents evidence FOR his or her proposition. They do not demand that someone produces evidence to the contrary. (Unicorns exist. If you don't accept that prove that they don't. Reductio ad absurdum).  And evidence in this respect isn't a collection of random copy'n'paste from a variety of sources (rarely peer reviewed).
You mention refraining from alcohol. Generally good advice (as witnessed elsewhere by Kaylee's story). But remember

But this is impinging on my day job and it's dull. I apologise for treating your posts like one of my student essays!
On a not totally unrelated note - you don't by any chance have direct experience of comparing high ISO footage on the C200 compared to your C300ii do you? (I think you have the latter?) I'd be interested to learn more about that as I'm thinking of a C200.

From what I understand, industry rates for commercial/corporate dry hire non-union camera ops (not even good ones) run about $600/day, significantly more with a kit.
Editing/vfx/color maybe $300-$500/day, more if you use your own computer.
Heck, I know DITS making $1500/day regularly.
    Sound, $700/day wet hire.
And that's before a 4-10X agency mark up (what the agency or studio charges the client).
But your potential client isn't hiring at industry rates for a reason. I'd just ask them roughly what their budget is. I wouldn't undersell yourself at $100/day. That'll make them suspicious that you don't value your own time, and they won't value yours.
I wouldn't try to take home a full rate for your first job, but I also wouldn't undersell yourself. Ask them roughly what their budget is or bid a little high and let them negotiate down. At least then they will recognize up front that you respect yourself. But the reason it's a difficult question to answer is that there's absolutely no standard or good answer for this kind of work. Which is why I wouldn't feel bad asking them what their budget is.

Phil A reacted to DBounce in Actually you can make the GH5 look very cinematic!
That first video does not look particularly "cinematic" to my eyes. Many blown highlights, underexposed subjects and poor framing. I'm going to replace the word "cinematic" with what it really means... "good cinematography", that is to say, shot by someone who understands the art of cinematography... which is defined as the art of making motion pictures. There is no camera setting at normal playback speed that will do this for you. Light you subjects, compose your shots, have purpose to your camera movements. All should support your story.
The second video is again mostly all slow motion, save for one scene that last only a couple of seconds.
The title is correct... the GH5 can look quite cinematic... but as we have seen demonstrated time and time again... so can a smartphone. But only if the shooter understands the art of cinematography. At this point in the game it's not the cameras that are lacking, it's the users.

So what did people settle for by now? I'm considering getting a cage so I can mount a quick release plate via 2 screws but also to occasionally mount accessories like a field monitor, video mic or a top handle.
Looking at the market currently has a bunch of stuff but some prices are just silly for what a cage does (is it so expensive to CNC a piece of aluminium?) or badly fitting.  These seem to be the currently as of this post available cages I could find with a link to their product page (of existing) and a subjective opinion:
8Sinn http://www.8sinn.com/index.php/8sinn-gh5-cage.html - Around 199 $ for just the cage alone (ends up at 220€ in Europe).
CameTV - 298$ but comes with a riser for rod and a top handle.
Chrosziel http://www.chrosziel.de/neu-system-700-gh5/?lang=en - 295€ for cage and top handle, has an integrated Manfrotto compatible dove tail
JTZ DP30 - Minimum configuration is the cage with a top handle, riser with rods. Very modular as camera to cage, cage to riser and riser to base plate have quick release connections (looks more Arca Swiss than Manfrotto though?). Difference to other cages is that the cage has electronic connections with camera and top handle (and optional hand grip kit, etc.). Starts at 359€.
    Lockcircle https://www.lockcircle.com/store/?p=robotskingh5 - Half-cage alone is already 439€, 539€ for full cage.
Movcam - Looks like a copy of the slightly earlier released 8Sinn cage, also roughly same price it seems.
Seercam http://seercam.com/shop/cube-gh5/ - Starts at 250$ for cage only. Has an integrated dovetail for their optional rod riser.
SmallRig http://www.smallrig.com/smallrig-dslr-cage-for-panasonic-lumix-gh5-1965.html - I had the A6300 cage and that was great for the money but this one seems to fit rather poorly on the grip side. Is it comfortable to hold it? Also got mixed reviews regarding access to the top control buttons. 89$
Tilta https://tilta.com/shop/tilta-panasonic-gh-series-cage-es-t37/ - 350$ and comes with cage, top handle, rod riser, screw-on rod holder and HDMI clamp. Camera mounts into the cage via quick release plate.
Varavon https://varavon.com/products/zeus-gh5-cage?variant=40977115270 - Cage only incl cable clamp comes for 219$.
Zacuto https://store.zacuto.com/gh5-cage/ - Comes with a hand strap and is going to cost you 495$.
...and then there are of course all the generic cages and half cages that are just a aluminium square to mount your cam into or are two plates connected with 15mm rods for height adjustment.
You could say there is something on the market for everyone, different form factors, features and prices points (~ 90 - 500$ for the cages alone). What is important though: not all of the cages allow to use the XLR audio adapter on top, especially when using the top handle.
I really like what Tilta and JTZ DP30 are doing by having the camera mount into the cage on a quick release plate. This allows you to quickly take the camera out of the cage and slap it onto a gimbal where even the small weight increase of the cage might be a deal breaker. On the other hand there is something to be said for really form fitting cages like 8Sinn and Movcam.
