Yeah, I put off installing new firmware for a month or two, sometimes it breaks more than it fixes.
Good to hear a happy ending!

I don't recall having that happen, tried changing some things but those settings haven't greyed out.
    Is this a new camera?

They already leapfrogged it with the GFX line. Would rather they bring out a cheap GFX model.

Little Photoshop size comparison between this and the S1H. Quite smaller !

    Daniel I agree 100%
We are customers at the end of the day and deserve some respect and to be levelled with in an honest way!!
It really drives me up the wall, the fact that I can break all this news on the blog and in Canon's eyes - I AM the villain right?!!? ME! The guy who said Canon had finally turned a corner, rushed out to give them my hard earned £4200 only to find all my worst suspicious were true.
The fact they have not apologised to me or to customers like you after all this investment is a DISGRACE.
If a class action happens I would support it 1000%
I cannot believe the depth of stupidity at the senior management level in Japan.
Why do they feel it is ok to release a product with an "official overheating problem" let alone an artificial one?!
It would be industrial level sabotage if it wasn't so self inflicted.
I cannot believe how slow they have been to respond with an apology and promise to investigate and fix the firmware.
They are actually standing their ground on this?? WHY?
Out of fear they might lose a few sales in a niche business division that deals with expensive camcorders?
The EOS business is surely bigger and should be pulling the strings, not the other way round.

I'm sorry, but this just isn't the case. People buy C-line video cameras for a plethora of reasons and for many use cases there's no way they would swap out a full-control, fully specified professional cine camera for a hybrid body. The form factor of a hybrid just wouldn't cut it in a wide range of professional working situations. Codecs, resolution and so on are important, but they really are only one part of the considerations that apply to choosing a working tool.

The thought of spending $4,000 on a camera and having to deal with all this nonsense, just to get the features Canon markets on the box...it's appalling. What's even more tragic is the people still making excuses. Canon could have delivered the goods and made everyone happy but they botched it.

Apart from the artificial crippling, the consensus is the camera doesn’t actually overheat? What voodoo is in there that the S1H doesn’t have? (which needs a huge vent).
Thing is, if Canon didn’t do this I would of been a customer of 2 bodies and a bunch of RF lenses. Plus I would of likely picked up an RF cine cam in the future. Just doesn’t make much business sense to me.

Thanks Andrew for the report. It is incredible that in 2020 anybody could have thought a product launch so stupid. Don't they know iFixit, Roger Cicala from LensRentals?? Do someone really think at Canon they could pull this out??

I'd like to hear from Tilta as well as Canon.
If my fridge doesn't cool the camera externally what does their fan do differently?
Canon said officially: "Use an external fan to dissipate heat"
Well I used an external fridge to dissipate heat and it made no fucking difference.

What a mess Canon made. If they wanted to protect their cinema line, they should have just put a 5-min time limit on the 8k and 4khq modes instead of an overheat timer. That way it was at least usable as a b-cam. Now you have an unreliable piece of expensive junk you cannot trust at all.

    Message to Sony and Cannot:
Please add a real time temp gauge to your R5 and S-III. A small, simple 5 dot heat meter line. (Looks like an audio level meter) have 2 green, 1 yellow 1 orange and 1 red colored dot.
This gives people more warning that their camera is getting hot. The more you know BEFORE a shutdown the better. I'd rather know it comming in 10min than find out 30 seconds before!
How hard would that EXTREMELY valuable information be to add to the display?

I'm not sure if this is adding a layer of pessimism or removing one, but could this be a PR strategy?
I mean, put out a camera with huge specs, then cause huge controversy due to overheating, then issue a "sorry, we've fixed it now, honest mistake!" firmware update, and watch the sales roll in.....
Look at how many people are talking about the 12K Ursa vs the 8K Canon - the headline didn't last but this is keeping up the emotion and sensation.
It's the best of both worlds - play the fanboys off against the Canon-bashers, and either no-one finds the cripple hammer and it pushes the cine line or someone does find it and it blows up again....    and all PR is good PR.

With the first 4K cameras, 4K was regarded as a miracle and we could sacrifice on overheating for resolution. But it is very sad that in 2020 the newest cameras still have overheating problems and they are not even consistent/measurable.

It seems people weren't this hard on Sony for all their overheating shenanigans- and Sony really didn't say anything about it, unlike Canon. Maybe it was just a different time.
People just want THE CAMERA with perfect IBIS (no wobblies at the wind end), RAW, PDAF, no overheating, unlimited recording times, great ergonomics with mic inputs (low self-noise, of course), great lens selection and all this at a super-low cost that never loses value on the used market. By the way,  99% or your audience won't even notice as they're too focused on your message (if its a good one). Also, did everyone forget that Canon still needs to sell its cinema cameras that are way more expensive?

Somewhere in an Indiana Jones end scene type warehouse are thousands and thousands of R5 / R6 cameras that will never ever see the light of day.
