Nikon FF Mirrorless
IronFilm and 2 others reacted to Andrew Reid for a topic
To be fair there were NO specs in the press release not even megapixel count. It was just Nikon saying "we're making a full frame mirrorless camera". So that's no-way an indication of lack of 4K, which is in all the leaked specs present and correct. Video has not been an afterthought at Nikon since the D750. They woke up. Sony see the demand for 4K enough to do a separate model for us - A7S - which has sold well - and Nikon see the same market demand and same data as Sony do - so they will provide the video specs we need... Maybe not to the extent of a dedicated model, but certainly building on the D850 spec. There's a lot of speculation that it will be a damp squib vs the mighty Sony benchmark. Well actually the benchmark for a full frame mirrorless camera is the Leica SL in some respects - best EVF on the market, best ergonomics, largest grip, highest build quality. Some of that photographic heritage is there at Nikon as well. And they will bring it to an A7R III-like body, what's not to like about that? I say give it a chance, because I know a lot of people are deeply indebted to Sony and invested balls deep in Sony gear, so it's hard to get your head around the fact there may be a second choice that wasn't there previously. If the Nikon ends up outperforming the A7R III, I am sure Jon will switch like he did from GHx to A7x and change his mind entirely about his previous kit. Just imagine IF... The IBIS is as good as Olympus/Panasonic... The EVF is as big as the Leica SL... The 4K is as good as the D850 but with extra options like HLG and Nikon LOG... And the AF is Dual Pixel... That would mean the Sony A7R III would be beaten and it would leave the A7 III to win on price but not much else. They already are though! Sigma for one. Given the Sigma lenses for Sony FE-mount are as large as the DSLR mount versions, you may as well use the Nikon F mount adapter and the existing versions on the new camera. Given the way the autofocus on the latest Sony cameras, it bodes well for the Nikon in video mode.3 points -

Yes, I doubt Nikon will work closely with third party lens makers. As Nikon would rather grab most of the pie for themselves! However working with others I feel would be the less risky strategy, as it would make the entire Nikon mirrorless ecosystem much stronger and more likely to win out as #1 in the long run. Just like why Micro Four Thirds is so strong, because they have so many manufacturers backing it, this is arguably it strongest point in its favor. And sometimes rarely Nikon has worked closely with others, like at the dawn of digital when they worked with Kodak to make DSLRs. But yeah, don't think this will happen now. But I can hope they make it an open mount! Or at least widely share it with approved partners. That happened in a different era. When a new mirrorless could take baby steps. The competition is hot now, Nikon must hit the ground running. I predict this as well to happen within the first year. A general mass market affordable adapter which can do 90% of what people want, then a high end adapter which has compatibility with all the many many many weird and wonder variants of lenses that Nikon has made over the decades. There might even be a third adapter, which is the cheapest and lightest of them all, which only works with their modern E series lenses.2 points

Yeah and to think they were the first ones to have it in the D90. Boy did they piss away a good head start.2 points -

Jon, thanks for mentioning these. I’ve spent so many years in search of cameras and lenses, in the near future I’m going to shift my focus and wallet towards lighting and audio. Although the Fotodiox versions are a little pricey (did they invent flapjacks?) they seem so well built and get really good reviews. I think I’m going to pick up the 5x8 or 7” on camera light in the coming months and if I’m as pleased with it as I suspect I’ll be, I may pick up one or two of the studio lights next year.1 point

Wide angle lens for Panasonic GX85 | Help

Came in here to share this actually. hahaha This is how I grabbed my copy, from a b&h sale in June. Definitely worth it IMO. I actually really like it on the Pocket Camera because it's tiny and is around 24mm FOV on there.1 point -

But would you want to color grade on a 21" TN panel that was run 8h for 5days a week for 3 years? Also +1 to transcoding. I have a system with way better performance than what you're looking at and I still transcode all my H.264 stuff to ProRes because it's just less sucky for editing. A regular SSD or maybe 3 or 4 spinning drives in Raid0 are perfectly fine for even ProRes HQ in UHD 60p.1 point

Yes I have A7riiis and I hate the mode lock. What for? My theory is that there were suggestions for putting a lock on the EV dial (which I rarely use for photos) and they simply put the lock on the wrong dial.1 point -

And the SLR magic 8mm is on sale at B and H right now. $129. I’ve read mixed reviews but at that price I’ve just grabbed one.1 point -
Ode To the Beloved Sony FS100

I was thinking back today just how much I enjoyed the images produced by my beloved old Sony FS100. I have shot with quite a few cameras since then, but I think I can honestly say that the FS100 produced some of the best-looking images on a consistent basis for me than any other camera I have worked with since. I shot primarily with Glen Cairn's G log ultimate which gave me beautiful dynamic range and color straight out of camera. Many times my grade was a simple lowering of the blacks and white balance adjustment. And, the files for 24mb/sec AVCHD, so easy in post. We moved on with cameras because of the size and ergonomics but I think that if Sony rehoused the FS100 sensor in a mirrorless body today, I would be the first buyer. Here are some 720p images from some of my old films for posterity sake. Does anyone else have fond memories with this camera? Some stills from your work with it?1 point -

Oh no doubt Nikon fans are going to be happy as hell to use just about any lens you can think of. But how many Nikon fans are there left that are willing to basically start all over? Surely most people realize by now that any real gains in Video, and hell None in Photography, are going to be by leaps and bounds that you Really need with this new camera now, and down the road. It is more skill now than camera. Hell the original BMPCC is still a killer camera. I see Nikon bringing nothing new to the game. Why shell out the cash for a dead end system, at least on the video side? There is No upward mobility. Just a little dribble here, a little 2 years from now, not worth it for me.1 point -
A mockup with the 44x33sensor. Eventually it's going to happen, but I don't think the first version will get it. No posts about this at SAR, lololol1 point

That's not what a large mount is about. You don't need a big mount to make f0.95 lenses, that's only true for long register distances. A big mount gives you stable support for larger lens weight, and you can make large optics close to the sensor that fix the problems digital sensors have with very low angle rays. Time will tell.1 point

Who the hell Needs a f0.95 lens that is as big as a house, and weighs as much , and cost as much, when we have cameras that go to a Million ISO on FF! That is just plain stupid, and yeah the AF, even MF ought to work keeping people in focus at that Aperture, yeah right. Nikon is just doing the same dumb crap they have been doing. Living in the past. Lets make a big, heavy ass Mirrorless camera, with big fat, fast lenses on it. Yeah that ought to work out!1 point -

Sony is ground breaking and Nikon will Have to be to stay with the Sony A9. You think those old screw lenses are going to focus at 20fps like the A9 can? With electronic shutters there is really no end to how fast they can do FPS. Sony is so damn far ahead of these guys it is not funny. Hey I am a big Nikon fan, but both Nikon, Canon have let themselves get so far behind, I have no clue what they were thinking. Sure they will be nice, but they are not going to be great! it is their first real try. And Sony will just top them at every move ,and lower the price, and lower it till the cows come home. They are not ever going to catch up. So instead of being the leader like they were at one time, they are sucking hind tit all the time. What a dumb ass position to let yourself get into. And Sony has them all by the ass on Sensors to boot. And if I wanted a body as big as the Nikon one looks like I would have stayed with a DSLR. With the bigger mount that means the lenses will be bigger, I think it is a stupid move. Mirrorless cameras were Never meant to have a 600mm lens hanging off of them. Why do you think Sony, Fuji doesn't have them. I am sure they will sell, but they have such a uphill road to go I doubt they have the capital to keep it moving ahead. Canon, Sony, Panasonic has so much more video experience to pull from, and Nikon has No upward path at all Semi Pro, or Pro gear. They have let themselves become somewhat irrelevant in the video world, and it will bit them in the ass in the short and long run. Canon and Sony will hand Nikon's ass to them even if it is a pretty good product. It is too little too late. Look at the D750 how they have shit around without updating it. Jesus.1 point -

Eh, the F3 is the same sensor with better processing, better form factor, better I/O, built in NDs, S-LOG, and for basically the same used price. Neither is a small camera, and I'd rather have an F3 on a cheap shoulder pad any day.1 point -
If the adapter works flawlessly, they don't have to be in a "rush hour" in lens making. They are ready to release a ridiculously compact 500mm f/5.6 for the F mount. I bet they have already made its AF motor mirrorless-compatible. This is also true about Canon (they even want to release a EF mirrorless, which won't have the lack of lens issue at all). Besides, unlike Sony, Nikon and Canon and Sigma, have full control on the whole glass process. Though the capacity is not very stretchable, they been doin this business from A to Z, for decades. So if they really want to deliver a dozen new lenses in a relatively short time, they can. Don't expect Canikon accepting help from third parties as Sony did. That's embarrassing for these two big guys that calling themselves Optics company!1 point

Thanks for a swift reply! So helpful and such a nice video with the synth music. Can you tell me about the handling and experience with the lens? i.e. is it extremely big and bulky? What mount is it? did you said it was a leica R mount? And will the back part of the lens make it unusable? thanks again!!! https://www.foto-markt.de/bilder/2017/June/9ieli1a-DSC_0004.JPG It just seems impossible to mount.... isn't it?1 point -
If you are moving to a desktop PC just use RAID 0 on internal disks and regularly save to a backup as it will be cheaper and less hassle than an external setup. I use 4 x 2tb which gives me enough read and write speed for 4k and an 8tb ext HD for daily backups. If I have a drive fail I would just replace the bad drive, rebuild the raid and copy back the data to it from the backup which is probably a lot easier, faster and safer than trying to recover from the more advanced RAID configurations. RAID 0 currently enables fast write and read speeds and large storage capacity for less money than SSD or NVME storage. When the latter 2 drop in price significantly we can consign RAID to history......1 point

Sata based SSDs are on the way out in consumer devices. M.2 SSDs are smaller and multiple times faster because they are not limited by the very slow for 2018 sata protocol. depending on how computer literate you are, I would advise against a consumer grade NAS. If you have the skills its far more economical and flexible in the long run to build your own NAS running FreeNAS.1 point
