Looks like we have another Trump troll heading for the bot farm from which they came.
What a shit stirrer. A ban is coming on at least 10 members because you are basically toxic people.
I am not going to sit here and let you turn the forum toxic with your racism and America First fuck the rest of us delusion.
You will need the Germans when the vaccine is ready.
You need the British when you want a camera forum, apparently.
But being grateful or thankful apparently isn't a part of your brain that lights up very much.
Therefore you don't deserve to be a member of this forum.
It's that simple. Enjoy your time here while it lasts because I am going to blanket ban toxic thickos tomorrow.
For the other idiots and patriot racists who are coming out of the woodwork, you're time's up.
Camera forums deserve a basic morality going on.
If you are trying to gain exclusivity over a coronavirus remedy, it's nothing more than a profit grab and a death sentence for others. The science community is a global one. All important science needs to be a world effort especially with a pandemic like this.
People are slowly realising what America First really means and what does this for America's image in the world. It fucking tarnishes it, to say the least. You have a President who is destroying any remaining appeal of American identity and idealism in the eyes of 80% of the world's population.
Be a good neighbour and you may get a German or Japanese coronavirus medicine at the same time as the rest of us.
And if you think your own people and flag is so much better than the others, develop your own fucking vaccine.
Like I say, I have tolerated gobshites all my life but time's up.
Yes I do remember the behaviour on the Titanic.
Having an exclusive deal on a pandemic vaccine isn't IN YOUR FUCKING BEST INTERESTS YOU FUCKWIT
You really are as fuckwitted as it gets... aren't you?
You consider shafting the world some kind of "victory"
You don't live in a fucking bubble.
You are a human being on planet Earth before you're an American.

It's not about hate, it's about wanting competent leadership during a global pandemic the likes of which most of us have never seen in our lifetimes.
Our president is an idiot. If you can't get beyond your own politics and realize that then you're the one with the problem.
It is literally, in the literal sense, impossible to deal with this in any meaningful way without addressing the idiot we have as a president.
His incompetence has contributed to this mess here in the US, and he has been among the leading source of disinformation. His other awful qualities really aren't relevant (like the racism) but they certainly do not help.

Says a guy sitting on the toilet. 😉  I kid!  I kid!  Don't take that joke too seriously.  But it's kinda like the poop calling the other turd brown, you know?
Speaking of jokes, less than a week ago people were making ha-ha's about the CDC, WHO, and COVID in right wing watering holes like the FNC.  Mocking the virus hand-wringing.  Somehow claiming it's a hoax.  This week it's suddenly incredibly serious and we all need to be part of the solution.  Not that I disagree with it being serious and all, but funny how rhetoric works.
Maybe COVID will shake loose a little bit of that nonsense and we'll give facts and science a bit more prestige?  Oh, for a silver-lining.

The thread is sleeping, so I thought about sharing updates after having used the S1 for a month (and the newly announced firmware updates are a good occasion for that !).
So I used the S1 during a 1 month arctic journey across northern Swedish mountains and Norway in last September/October. I only took the S1, for photo and video, and brought with me the 24-105 f4 kit lens and the Sigma 14-24 2.8 dg dn (the new one, designed for mirrorless) which I brought 3 weeks before I left home.
I wanted to film (not doing time lapse) the northern lights, but we were not very lucky with the intensity of lady aurora, despite one or two explosions in the sky, and the f2.8 aperture of the sigma was not enough. I will soon sell the Sigma and buy a 20 1.4 Sigma art, and maybe wait for the newly announced pana 16-35 f4... (or a used canon 16-35 f4).
I was a bit frustrated with longer reach need, because, when I bought the S1, I thought the ex.tele converter worked the same as on Sony (clear zoom if I remember) and on the GH5 and G9. So I did not bring any tele for this trip (despite still having at home a Canon 200 f2.8 L ii prime at that time), hoping to film with the 24-105 at 105mm in apsc mode + exteleconv. Some days before leaving home, I discovered that it does not work in 4k… So on 1 or 2 occasions, to film wildlife or distant landscape, I used 1080, and pixel/pixel mode. I checked the results at home on my computer, and the results are really really awful eheh ! APSC mode is, on the other hand, really good ; so, in the end, I had a little reach on some occasions.
I really love the range of the 24-105, and find it very useful. Fot this kind of trip, it is perfect ; maybe the newly announced (yeah, so much "newly announced" today !) Sigma art 24-70 f2.8 dg dn will be better, I'll keep a close eye on it. The Sigma 14-24 f28 dg dn is a wonderful lens for photos, sharp enough for me in the corner, light etc. But the inability to put a vari nd on it was useless for video. I bought it for nighttime auroras filming, but a 20 1.4 + a wide zoom that takes filters will serve me better.
I encountered minor bugs  : occasionally, when I pressed the review button to check my images, it said "no valid pictures on card". Had to turn off the camera and I could access again my images. I had 1 or 2 freezes (really less than my fujis that used to freeze very very often) too. Ah, and the camera is slooooooooow to operate. Drives me crazy when in a rush !
All in all, it worked very well, even during snow storms and -10°C temperatures, and was covered with ice and used under rain with no problems. The handling and controls are phenomenal, especially in shitty conditions.
So far, I only reviewed my footage on my computer since I came back home, and I barely touched the camera again (little time) but I managed to play with some clips. The Vlog shots are gorgeous... really ! I tried to play with them with filmconvert nitrate and varicam profile (I need to try the """newly announced""" ? S1 profiles), and with the varicam luts supplied by panasonic, and I love everything about it : colors, look... I think i prefer the result I obtain by applying Resolve's color space transform to the vlog clip, and then tweaking it to taste. I am still learning and, thus, is a horrible color corrector, but with minor stuff applied, I obtain a really pleasing result.  I also filmed a lot with Cine-d and HLG. The former seems to be very good, and the latter... I still did not figure out how to treat it in Resolve eheh. I wish I had more time to learn the camera prior to departure, because I played with the flat profile last week-end, and I really like it too. One thing I instantly noticed is the iso capabilities : amazing !
I sadly found some missed focus shots while reviewing my clips. More than I wanted... I mainly used MF, but with a lot of "AF first then switch to MF", and maybe the struggling AF in low contrast scene + not always easy to check the focus peaking in bad weather conditions + my poor fillmmaking skills are to blame.
On the still side, not a lot of things to say : wonderful high iso performance, very flexible files... everything you want from a modern 24mp sensor. A great machine for my use : landscape, documentary, astro photo...

Sorry for the very unprofessional review ahah, hope some of you will find something useful. I attach just for the fun an image I took inside the tent, after a short night (I still have to post process my photos). Don't pay attention to the "clean" appearance of the camera... I was always wiping it, as it was often covered with snow and rain ?

I will sell my Sigma 14-24 2.8 and, in the future, I will slowly build  a kit with a wide angle prime, lenses like the samyang 135 f2, takumar 50 1.4, and maybe the coming panasonic S lenses...
But for now, I will add the smallrig cage for the S1 + a cheap 5.5" monitor, and I think about buying a Panasonic G9 + pana leica 200 f2.8 + tc (unbelievable sales + cashback right now) . It will allow me to "deport" the long reach video and photo use to this setup.

@omega1978 sorry, I promised you to take sample images with the sigma 14-24, but I did not find time to do it before leaving. Did you put your hands on it ??

Well, IMO, in the Panasonic S1/S1H cameras we're looking at a fantastic pair of offerings. The in-camera 10 bit 422, the stabilization--fantastic, the number of buttons and how they can be customized is just wonderful---I have my S1 set up with with the N/E/S/W and center push of the joy stick all programmed with my most used functions---and that gives me almost total control of the image I'm shooting, all located instantly below my right thumb and index finger. It makes me able to play the S1 like Heifitz played his Guarnerius. (For those culturally challenged, you can look it up.)
If that weren't enough, the image is  just beautiful, in both FF and APS-C. And to put the cherry on the  top the XLR unit of the GH5 gives me great in-studio audio--in camera!
The lens selection is endless--at least for someone like me who uses third party, non-electronic lenses 95% of the time.
Yes, there are some codecs the BMPCC has the S1 doesn't have. But, by comparison, the usability and versatility of the S1 is over the top better.
There are limited choices in the S1 compared to the S1H. But in my own shooting I never need many of those features---with the exception of C4k. I'd really like that added to the S1.
But sanity should prevail, and when any of us consider all the features and benefits (FAB) a given camera provides, each of us has to ask ourselves---how beneficial TO US are many of those benefits we see on paper--how much will we use them--if at all? Personally, I have no interest in shooting anamorphic--or 6k, and seldom if ever need 400 MBPS. If I were to be honest, most of what I do is well provided by a high bit rate 422 1080p--4k is nice, but not always totally necessary. Again, being honest, when I consider 4k from a cost/benefit perspective, it doesn't always come out on the long end.
IMO, I think it's wise when we find ourselves being dazzled by specs on paper to take a step back and remind ourselves that there is often not a small amount of cognitive dissonance between what we see on paper and the actual performance and results we get in reality. It's not always easy to quantify how valuable usability in performance is---but we know it when we see and experience it. And it's worth its weight in gold.
If that were not true, if paper and performance always corresponded, I would never have purchased the EOS R. But within its not-so-obvious limitations it's killer good, with beautiful IQ and color. This seems to be Canon's consistent MO: unimpressive on paper, but incomparable in ease of use, and dependably delivering a great end result.--I say this having no love for that company and how they mistreat their loyal customer base.

Yes, the S1 can output  4K 60p (in aps-c crop) 10-bit 4:2:2 to an HDMI recorder.
The S1 has some nice features when paired with the native Lumix 24-105 lens, but it has some drawbacks too, particularly on a gimbal.
The native lenses are pretty expensive and pretty big and heavy. I use the S1 and 24-105 f/4 on my Weebill S and it is a bit hard for me to keep under control.
The 24-105 is so big that you have to slide the whole rig back real far on the weebill s  and that can limit how far up you can tilt the screen (I tend to shoot close to waist level on a gimbal, so it might be less of a bother to others who hold the camera closer to eye level).
Oh, and that is with the 24-105 at the 24mm end. If you zoom in, then the barrel extends a LOT and you will have to rebalance and move the camera further back on the gimbal, if that is even possible.
The S1 has two zebra memory positions, but unlike the S1H, you can't show BOTH zebras at the same time.
On the other hand, some good things are that:
The 25-105 is about as parfocal as can be, as far as I can tell and have seen on the internets
The 24-105 has minimal focus breathing.
While we all know about Panasonic DFD autofcus, doing a focus pull using the touch screen is REALLY smooth. It isn't fast, but it very gently eases in to the new focus point. It probably eases out from the first focus point, too. Yes, it is far slower than my Sony cameras, but it is much, much smoother and is pretty similar to a really good manual focus pull. (Much better than I can do manually.)
And speaking of manual focus pulls, the S1 allows you to set the 24-105 to a linear focus response when turning the focus ring (so much better than the typical focus by wire response), and...
You can adjust the amount of degrees of rotation in the focus ring from minimum focus distance to infinity. I think you can have a minimum of 90-degrees and a max of at least 360-degrees. There is a setting that says "Maximum" but got no clue what that means.
The other good news is that the Sigma MC-21 seems to work pretty well with a lot of Canon glass (at least for AF-S, there is no AF-C at this time with the SA-21 adapter and ANY lens, either sigma or canon), and your typical manual vintage FF lenses work well on the S1.
That's a good thing because there isn't a whole lot of L Mount glass available now. For example, the only native 50mm lens is an f/1.4 costs around $2,300 and there isn't anything on any lens roadmap for a native 50mm f/1.8 for a couple hundred dollars. There is an 85mm f/1.8 on Panasonic's lens roadmap, but I wouldn't be surprised if it is big, heavy and expensive.

So i said i'd post some stills, these are basically ungraded.
This frame is in a sequence with car lights, i like the tonality of this very subdued moment. Shot 12bit to manage shadow tonality.

From a different point above. All shot on a 50mm M Summicron probably wide open.

I think i hit the saturation slider here in Resolve. But this had car rolling over camera. It's a 21mm CV lens and i see some CA aberrations from the lens that i would deal with in post. But i'd never let a car run over a Red!

shot on an 85mm APO off a monopod. Nice tonality again and it's day light from windows with some small panel lights bouncing and filling in

    A reverse of the above.

    Some fun shots.
I think the true benefit of something like the fp is the speed at which you can see something and grab it. Using it just with an SSD plugged in and manual M lenses gives a more spontaneous feel. Now most of the film will be shot on Red, in controlled conditions with a crew and that's the right approach for multiple dialogue scenes and careful blocking. But the fp has it's place and i may hand it too someone and just say grab stuff.

    cheers

Geoff_L got a reaction from EthanAlexander in Panasonic S1 V-LOG -- New image quality king of the hill

It was using just the LCD panel that I had for a Pi rather than the Pi itself.

If you actually did want to incorporate a Pi into the equation though, you could use an HDMI to CSI-2 bridge such as this one to get the signal into it in combination with OpenCV to make a solution with monitoring functionality such as false colour, focus peaking etc.
