It breaks easily and requires you to have a cage for the camera to use it reliably without it falling out or getting pulled out easily. Full and even miniHDMI you can get away with just plugging it in sometimes but I never trust micro and don't want to lug a cage whenever I want to use and external monitor.

Honestly hope the S5 releases for $1500 and kills used prices on the S1, that way I can pick one up with the XLR input. It really is a rock solid camera with no negatives for me except the lack of great video AF.... and I really don't use video AF right now, it would just be nice to have.

For me the S5 is dead to me because of the lens mount. The cost of the body would be reasonable all the way up to around $2300USD to me, but having to buy new glass just gives me a headache. That's why I would much rather that a GH6 were released....I'd be willing to buy a new body if that was the only cost. But for me to spend upwards of $6K (body plus a few lenses) it will need to have better AF, and be useable as a true hybrid camera like I thought the R6 would be. I don't know why I still somehow think Canon will "fix" the R6, but that is my hope.

I'm just saying that the S5 really isn't that much better. Everyone is talking like its this huge upgrade that somehow makes the s1 obsolete.
While the S1 with VLOG goes for around $1600 like new.
The s5 might be $2000 and if so, technically what are you losing for $400 less? 4k 60 10bit? a couple different aspect ratios? maybe marginally better AF?
But what does the S1 have over the S5? Better build, better EVF, Better battery life, full HDMI out.
I guess it's a no brainer if you prefer smaller cameras, in that case the S5 is 100% a better choice. But what if you like big cameras?
Honestly the S1 and s5 seem like comparable cameras made for different shooting styles.
Most retailers include the VLOG upgrade for free now anyway.
I'm not in the market to buy another S1 because I already have one, I might potentially replace my a6300 with the S5 as my gimbal cam if the price is good.
I'm only saying this because I noticed a lot of people saying the S1 in kind of pointless now, but really I don't think it is. Now if the S5 is like $1600 then yeah I think the S1 will sorta be pointless.

Use the color adjustments mainly for creative project.  For day to day editing what I use the most is hitting offset and I can adjust the white balance with the left wheel, tint with center wheel, and the exposure with the right. I use that adjustment constantly.

Have the stream deck setup to create new color nodes and for switchin between editing/color/fairlight/deliver pages.

    My desk setup.

Love hard buttons and jog/shuttle shuttle wheels for edit and the color wheels being physical. Just makes editing and grading more fun for me.
For those considering I would AT LEAST get a jog wheel, so nice to go through the timeline with it and very hard when I'm on another computer without one.

I'm not arguing against the mirrorless cameras quality.  On the contrary, I've shot with them more than any other camera.  I also don't disagree for small indie movies they are ideal.  I would do the same.  I also saw and own a movie shot on the GH2 and the quality is very good.  I love the GH series cameras and own them all.  Brilliant cameras.
Where I draw the line is feeling mirrorless hybrids are a replacement and even equal to cinema cameras.  Not just because a dedicated cinema camera have functions that mirrorless cameras lack, can be more reliable, but also as they have a better image that allows for stronger grading.
This isn't to say mirrorless don't have a good image.  They do.  Throw the image out to an external recorder for RAW or use a 400mbit all-l codec and you are getting there.  But then you lose the portability and small size many buy mirrorless for.
There are some who feel they can buy one camera that rules them all for all their video work.  I favour a variety of cameras to serve different needs.  In this setup, a mirrorless camera can be very useful and deliver a great image.
In my experience, those who talk about the so called fullframe look, whilst overlooking the image quality difference a dedicated cinema camera has over mirrorless are probably locked into a certain point of view tied to the camera they currently own.

First outing with the camera. handheld with a 24-105. Loved the camera. I need to adjust a couple things but for the most part a near perfect camera for me. It was extremely dark with the forest canopy. I'll try the Sigma 18-35 next.

I find in practice it is less convenient then a screw on fixed ND. It really only make sense for lenses that you can’t screw a ND on the front of the lens.

You loose color information in log images in 8-bit codecs. The more DR here you are trying to accomplish the worse it will look. S log2 is really the limit for 8-bit and even then sometimes that's pushing it.

This camera is the most interesting of all the new releases imho, am bored of the overheating mess that is Canon, and the disappointingly video like images of the A7s3.

@Trek of Joy I was not aware of Brandon before so thanks for the heads up.
Very impressed. I have never been much of  Sony fan before but this unit and the lens options available are ticking just about every box except...
    Price
    I’d prefer 20 megapixies
    I’d prefer a tilt screen
None of the above are deal-breakers however.
Otherwise that XH2 had better be damn good and available by end of March 2021 otherwise for only the 3rd time in my 20 year professional career, I will be switching.

Unlike those folks that switch 3 times in a year.
And then actually admit it in a specially made YouTube video...

The production company I work for has purchased the new 1.5x Aivascope from the Facebook page. I honestly love it. It’s certainly not perfectly, but it’s given us the flexibility we need to shoot anamorphic without totally breaking the bank. It’s quite easy to use as well.
In my tests, I’ve found that the taking lens often gives the characteristics I’m looking to achieve. I feel the Aivascope is quite clinical and sharp. If I put a modern stills lens behind it, the image will be exactly that. However, if I put our Contax Zeiss set behind it, it takes on a totally new look. We shot a few spots with the Aivascope, Contax taking lens, and the S1H.

I believe we used the 50mm 1.4 for most, with the 85mm 1.4 and 35-70 3.4 for some pickup shots. We shot mostly at f2.8
