  1. Or just light your scene

  2. 1. Innovative Lighting Tools Lighting is the most important technical aspect of filmmaking, yet so, so many people don't bother! INSANE!!! I'd like to see a growth of innovation in affordable, LED based lights with high light output. Smartphone controlled lights. Clamped lights. LIGHTS!!! 2. Modified Lenses Lenses are more interesting when modified, certainly when they can do some extra effects and have cine gears. Give us some character! 3. Ninja Star 4k I don't want a massive screen on my tiny camera thanks! The Shogun really needs a baby brother. 4. Panasonic Video Camera They have a GH4, and then...a Varicam. Surely they have a partner to the GH4 on the horizon? 4k 60p, better DR and 120fps HD are my only requests. and... that's it.

  3. Pardon me, but if you look at the details of that test it was complete GARBAGE. The reviewer used the stock settings on each camera to get his result, no tweaks to contrast or black level. Also he used a different lens on each camera. I agree with Jimmy, if your shooting in this scenario just light him properly and the issue goes away. What is more important in this shot to take note of is the skin tone, which is miles better in the NX1.

  4. Andrew, I Really like the look of the A7S on this. Great video. Nobody has mentioned the music, which I thought was fantastic. A very talented group of musicians, I checked out other tracks on SoundCloud. These guys have the stuff to make it big. Cameron's voice is amazing.

  5. Nx1's highlights are much much better! Only because of the nice pleasing roll off When actually optimizing it for maximum DR.

  6. So basically what you are saying is A7S = perfect camera to shoot The Simpsons with?

  7. Andy, I have to find the 28 Zeiss I'll put the 29 in the "artistic" kit with the super-odd Helios 58 and the Tokina FD 28-85 My FD kit is: 20 f/2.8, 28 f/2.8, 35 f/2, 50 f/1.4, 85 f/1.8. Do you think they all are better then M42 Zeiss Jena Flektogon 20 f/2.8 and Pancolar 50 f/1.8? I ask you because I have some ideas about them, but I trust your opinion more then mine (btw, my idea is: FD are way more "modern" and contrasty, Zeiss M42 are more "organic", maybe "filmic"). Do you think it is good to mix those FD and Zeiss in the same work or it is better to use all FD or all Zeiss?

  8. then you'll definitely not like the highlights on the NX1, which are worse.

  9. My Hopes: Adobe announces H265 support for Premiere Firmware update for the NX1 that adds the 1:1 4K crop mode from the NX500. GoPro will announce a video camera outside the action sports arena. KineMINI announces a U.S. Distributor

    Audio on GH4 and NX1

jcs, I assume that was a link to your work. It sounded good. Interesting green screen shots too. your Hollywood stock footage and Hooray for Hollywood interlude was funny. The narration sounded very nice.

  11. I'm glad I paid less than 20 bucks for it. But like you said a lens is a tool. If I can get the aperture unstuck, it can make a nice little fx lens.

  12. the things that are odd about it also add character to it if you want to use it as an FX lens - its soft and has distortion it has bendy corners on full frame and CA and flares!! .......so perfect for an arty fx lens haha!! it is the Meyer Görlitz Orestegon 2.8/29 that became part of the Pentacon family after the merger compared to the 28mm Pentacon .....and Zeiss Jena 28mm (which are the same design) which is a nicer/ cleaner normal lens the are no rules and no schools with lenses - if you like it ...use it!! simple as that !!

I don't know what the hell is wrong with nikon. All they would have to do is add a 24 fps mode and I would use the camera with small c-mount lenses for short films. Why they continue to shoot themselves in the foot when as others say they have NO cinema lineup to protect just completely baffles me.

  14. the 29mm Pentacon is an odd ball lens and not as good as their 28mm one (not as sharp and more distortion) - I would steer clear of it . get the Zeiss 28mm f2.8 in m42 if you really need an m42 mount its a better lens thena the Pentacon 29mm The best 28mm for the money is the Canon FD 2.8 28mm is superb lens and very very cheap on ebay - I use mine alot on a speed booster on micro 4/3 - it gives you the David Fincher wide look ...... 572575577

People here should see this camera for what it is, a $ 500 interchangeable camera with a Kit lens that will cost $ 400 in 6 month, which is not meant for enthusiast and pro filmakers. Yeah the marketing sucks like all those 4k cellphone that barely reach this level of resolution because of their sensor and lens. If you follow Nikon product cycle you will know that the main advancement come in two ways. Once every four years with the releases of its flagship D3/D4 and D800 type camera, which themselves get a mid term update evolution in between and some test bed tech that they implement in entry level camera like the moire/alias free, very good lowlight D5200 camera that first used pixel binning. This camera has it purpose, can you imagine that it has a better processor than the top of the line D4s and D810 camera!!!! The latest D810 and D750 already have some of the best 1080p out of any dslr. This indicates that you will have at least 4k in the next update of the D4/d800 and all future Nikon bodies in the next two years. Their update might be incremental but they are getting their, contrary to the A7s and Nx1 their camera don't have big flaws like rolling shutter, or lack of DR and low light in the NX1 or crappy colour science that needs an expert colourist with the Sony cameras. I see the same analogy made about Canon on internet board where the geeks can only comprehend resolution. But yet when you see pro usage or more artistic usage like film festival, the Canon is everywhere because the C100/C300 line are balanced cameras with no big flaws like appalling rolling shutter or colour science.

Wasn't that 20fps? Nikon are turning back the clock! Soon they will be giving us silent movies!!

  18. Yea those videos weren't really that impressive to me. Andrew's flim and his articles convinced me. Josephe Gordon Levitt is an amazing person and filmmaker - Don John is a great film - but yea, his little hit record short didn't really move me.

  21. I have been looking and looking for any sort of mount for an Iscomorphot 8 1.5. Redstan no longer seem to supply these and I coudnt find anything else that looked any good online. So I made my own. I thought this may be of interest to anyone else looking or having the same problem. The OD of the Isco lens body is 37.1mm approx so I took a 37mm thread to 43mm adapter and opened up the ID in the lathe until I got a nice slip fit over the Isco body, I then drilled and tapped a small hole to accept a set screw. I can now retain the lens within this 'adapter' collar and screw that into whatever spacers I need to mount to different lenses. The set screw is the cup tip type and it holds onto the lens really well. I make sure the lens is set to infinity before sliding it into the adapter and setting the screw as that is its shortest length of travel in this position. About £10 in parts too
