My cameras and kit

1. I did mention this in another thread, but I think that it probably deserves its own topic. For those of you trying to mount diopters on LA7200 anamorphic lenses, this is what I have been doing (see pictures). The binding product is called Dual Lock. It is similar to velcro but is adhesive-sided and creates a stronger bond. I never have to worry about my diopters slipping off. It works well with inexpensive Cokin-P diopters as pictured. With a GH2, I can shoot with the Voigtlander Nokton and the LA7200 with only slight vignetting. So 30mm and up should be vignette free. It's a very simple concept but I haven't seen anyone else using it and it took me a while to figure it out. I hope that others find it useful.
2. Had several questions about these lately, here's a more in depth breakdown: http://jeremyosbern.com/blog/2013/04/16/zeiss-ultrascope-anamorphic-lens/ I plan on shooting a project in Ultrascope later this year, using both RED and 35mm film, then comparing the two. I'll post it when it's done.
3. Hi!   I´m planning on buying a new lens to my GH2. I was planning on buying the 25mm Vöigthlander 0.95 prime, but now I'm not sure anymore. When the BMPCC is released this summer I'm planing to upgrade.   So the question is (with the 3x crop factor on the BMPCC) should I buy another lens? I´m open for suggestions. Maybe some c-mount lenses instead?    Please i need your advise on this decision.
4. Hi there,   I am a german-based cinematographer an I have observed dslr video only from a distance until recently. To many problems to really see the picture. The GH2 I once played with for a day or two, I actually liked he best - lots of detail in the pictures, and that little screen is useful - but than again the clipping of the highlights and the banding in the sky, and worst, those deep shadows - not really an option. Now I have a project I have to shoot with a small camera, it need to be almost invisible. I did some testing with the Mark III and the d5200. At first I was really impressed with the d5200 - I like the image, it has a lot of detail, the dynamic range is not bad, an it feel rather natural. But then there is the noise in low light ... and the handling is a mess. You need to go out of the live-view to change the aperture - not very usefull. Then I had a close look at the Mark III, which has a much better handling - except for the fixed screen. But comparing the images of both, in the Mark III I saw all the things I don't like about dslr video. So for me it is the d5200 - the pictures feel much more natural an organic. Anyway, here is my Topic: I am looking for a proper wide angle zoom with image stabilisation. I am shooting documentary style, and I cannot use a shoulder rig or anything like that. Has anyone got experience with this type of lenses? I am talking about the nikon 1:4 16-35mm VR or similar. I am right now testing a Sigma 2,8 17-55, and it is not convincing. To soft, to much distortion, all straight lines are bending, no matter whether it is at 17, 21, 24 or even 50 milimeters. So what is a proper lens with image stabilisation?
5. The Iscomorphot 8/1.5x doesn't seem to have a really good taking lens.   I thought I'd take a stab at finding one.   I recently picked up a Nikkor-O 35mm f/2 lens that I heard worked wonders with the Baby Bolex on a GH2. I assumed that it would have similar vignetteing characteristics as they have the same screw size on the back. Turns out that serious vignetting kicks in below f/4 on a GH2 (probably won't set in on a GH3 until 5.6) but this combo has the least smearing I have seen with the Iscomorphot. This combo smears a hell of a lot less than when it's on the Helios 44-2.   Here's the comparison I did between the Nikkor-O and Helios with a Voigtlander Nokton 25/0.95 (all Voigtlander shots are the same picture, put next to the others for easier reference).   https://benwabbott.minus.com/lFF8XQjURfUTx   Tomorrow I'll do a better comparison by rolling through the apertures on each in video form.
6. Hello fellow lens gurus, I've been looking to buy some kind of start lens, to what will hopefully soon be my anamorphic lens collection. I tired to buy a set of oct-19 lomos over the summer but was endlessly outbid. I'm a canon 5dmk3 and canon l series glass owner, and have wanted to adapt or better yet, actually own anamorphic primes that work on a full frame sensor without dual focusing or piggybacking lens together. I found this on eBay today but don't know much about this lens other than its a later isco and is multi coated. The nice thing seems to be that it already is equipt with and canon lens mount, but I'm not sure if this 50mm lens will cover the full frame sensor on the 5d3. http://www.ebay.com/itm/130864721991?ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1423.l2649 Take a look and let me know your thoughts before I consider plopping down 2gs. Thanks for your help as always guys!!
7. What are(is) the must have lens(es) for filming? I have just the one, 14-42mm(gh2). Genre:horror, suspense, drama. Shooting mostly indoors.     Thanks, Karl
8. Hey there! Also posted this here to get others opinions on my situation!   I'm Matej, a filmmaker from Slovenia, and I am slowly trying to get into the anamorphic video shooting, since I love the classic cinema look, that can be achieved. But since no one in Slovenia is actually shooting anamorphicly, it is almost impossible to find any anamorphic lens here in Slovenia. Somehow, luckily, a friend of mine, who collects vintage lenses, happens to have some anamorphic lens which he is willing to sell some of them to me. Now here is the main situation: He has some rathenowers 48/2x and 80/2x, and the 2 versions of Isco Gottingen Anamorphotic 2x kiptars, one with the focus ring and 2 of the versions without one.   One without: http://www.flickr.com/photos/sicovdplas/ One with it: http://cameramate.com/images/s_15909.jpg   I am now asking for advice, which one of the 2 versions would be easier to use with a DSLR (in my case 600D and a 7D)? I suspect, that the focusless version is easier, because I can just focus with my lens, if I get a couple of close up filters.   Another problem is that the 2 focusless versions have lots of dust in the lens itself so I'm wondering if that is a huge dealbreaker or can it be cleaned?   Cheers!
9. Hello to you all,   another issue with the anaorphic lenses. I am a newbie to these stuff. I recently bought an anamorphic lens (Meopta Anagon 2x80) in order to practice for my forthcoming shooting. The issue that I am facing is that when I shoot between 1m-2,5m the picture is blur and completely useles. The problem seems to dissapear when I shoot 3m and beyond. Please advice any solution and why that happens. For your info, before anamorphic I use a prime 58mm f1,4.
10. Just did some lens tests with the GH3 vs GH2 w/ Flow Motion v2.02 hack.  Information below:   GH2 vs GH3 Night Lens Test Panasonic GH2 w/ Flow Motion v2.02 Hack, Vivid -2,-2,-2,-2 Panasonic GH3, Vivid -3,-5,-4,-5 Lenses used: Panasonic Leica DG Summilux 25mm F1.4 Canon FD 50mm F1.2L Canon FD 85mm F1.2L Canon EF 100mm Macro F2.8 Perspective is different even though I used them on the same tripod.  GH2 is 1.86x sensor crop, GH3 is 2x sensor crop.   In very dark situations the GH3 is noticeably brighter, about 2/3 of a stop.  I tried to compensate by making the GH2 1 stop ISO brighter.  But by doing so makes the GH2 have more noise and have "milky" blacks.  Color correction is very difficult with the GH2 even with the hack.  The GH3 does much better in this regard, although detail might be a little lower.   http://youtu.be/KM_6ZKCFuPs   http://youtu.be/6pwNZxfa1uM   http://youtu.be/_UK0Ck7jQbM
11. 12. Hello,   I've spent weeks researching, and I've decided to turn to some aficionados.   First up, Camera: I've found that the GH2 is the best price/performance camera. Is this still true today, or are there better ones, such as the Olympus E-M5? Or, would it be best to wait -- do you think there will be anything extraordinary worth waiting for in the first few months of 2013?   Lastly, Lens: I've seen some people use old TV SD 2/3" Lenses, like B4 and C-Mount, etc. Are these worth it? I've heard that (for the most part), the IQ isn't very good, and there's a large amount of work (modifications) to get them to work.   Should I instead be looking at native lenses, like the Leica 25mm? Lots of people talk about anamorphic lenses, and the Voigtlander f/0.95. It seems like almost everyone raves about the Voigtlander, and while it seems expensive, is it truly worth it (price/performance) over say the Panny 20mm or even the Leica 25mm?   Thank you for taking the time to read this, and I hope this topic helps others as well! -Josh
13. Or so it would seem. I just ordered a set of these for my Iscos: http://www.xumeadapters.com/   It should make swapping and combining diopters a snap.   I will let you know my thoughts when I receive them.
14. http://blogs.zeiss.com/photo/en/?p=2860 For those with money to burn (or the rental houses), new high-end Zeiss primes for Canon and Nikon. These resemble the Hasselblad medium-format lenses in size and construction. Pretty spectacular things!
15. Yes I'm a lens geek: http://photorumors.com/2012/09/14/samyang-10mm-12-8-ed-as-umc-cs-lens/#more-31872 If it beats the Tokina 11-16 for IQ or price significantly it's interesting... otherwise... But you may find it interesting as an option for BMD camera...
16. Hi, I m trying to set up the best lens kit for the price for the BMC camera. I need your opinion on what's better: OPTION 1: Samyang 8mm f3.5 (video version) Samyang 24mm f1.4 (video version) Samyang 35mm f1.4 (video version) Tokina 11-16mm f2.8 Price: approximately $2400 These are all full frame lenses (except for the last one), so they have future value and since all are EF, I would opt for EF mount BMC OPTION 2: Samyang 8mm f3.5 (video version) Samyang 35mm f1.4 (video version) Voigtlander Nokton 17.5mm f0.95 Voigtlander Nokton 25mm f0.95 Noktor SLR Magic 12mm f1.6 Price: approximately $3690 This option has 3 m4/3 lenses (not as future proof as full frame lenses), but way faster wides. I would have to go for BMC with m4/3 mount. Also this option is considerably more expensive - arround $1300, for my tight budget. Please let me know your thoughts. Thank you very much for your time and effort.
17. Hey guys, GH2 owner.. I have seen Rokinon's 7.5mm Fisheye they have for m43'rds and then I saw their 85mm F14 telephoto lens made for 4/3rds (on my wish list) for $300!! http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/769411-REG/Rokinon_85M_O_85mm_f_1_4_Aspherical_Lens.html So I decided to take a look at their site and find out they have some also a 24mm F1.4 lens for $800.. I know its not as popular as the Voig F0.95 http://www.rokinon.com/product.php?id=191 Furthermore, they even have CINE lenses coming soon, including a 8mm HD Fisheye T lenses http://www.rokinon.com/product.php?id=206 and 35mm T1.5 CINE lens for Canon (for now hopefully).. http://www.rokinon.com/product.php?id=202 under $600 !!!!!! deal or no deal?? Wanted to get other people feedback about Rokinon and their come up with lens for both photographers and now cinematographers...
18. Hey guys and fellow GH2 owners.. I'm trying to decide between the Pancake 20mm F1.7 or the Leica 25mm F1.4... I know right, I don't owner either of these two lovely lens.. I may end up getting both in the end, but because have to buy one at a time, I ned to choose between them.. I'm slightly leaning towards the 25mm Leica, because of it's name, the nano lens that 20mm does not have, and F1.4 vs. F1.7... However SO many more people own the 20mm F1.7 and it may be because its cheaper.. at about $356 vs. $500... Any one have some nice photo shots of the 25mm leica and 20mm pancake? Would like to compare them through images.. Also the Panasonic Fisheye is a bit expensive, and the Panasonic 14mm F2.5 Prime pancake looks nice, wish the aperture was bigger.. I would get the Noktor 12mm T1.6 before the 14mm.
19. Hello all! New to here. Very excited about my new GH2 body. Apparently a lens is needed though. How about that? I purchased my GH2 mainly as a B-camera to use when shooting interview for close-up, beauty stuff to complement my medium wide (using the Panasonic AC130 as my A-cam), but hope to eventually learn to flex its muscles on more interesting stuff. I'm looking for some lens recommendations. These are kind of two separate questions, but what would be best for my needs and then what would be cheapest but workable? My research seems to point me to the Voigtlander 25mm, but it's a little pricey for me right now. I plan on getting the cheap kit lens (14-42) just for the purposes of learning the camera, but it seems the kit lenses aren't quite going to deliver me that nice shallow DOF look I'm hoping for. Any budget options that'll do the trick for me, putting it on a tripod and getting close up, blurry background, b-camera interview beauty stuff? Thoughts? Much appreciated. -Noah
