The R5 as a video camera as it is now is still not feasible for all video creators. But then is there a camera other than the A7S3 that's 'perfect'? Sony used to overheat and still has (imho) greeny yellow colour science and didn't have a flip screen. Panasonic S1H and their G5 range has shocking autofocus performance etc. Canon has poor dynamic range and would leave out features etc. Does any camera tick every box.
No camera is perfect, all have some issue that you have to work around.  What's the workaround for 12mp stills on the A7S3? I would need to get the A73 or A7R4, a £2k workaround.

This is it. Only canboy's persist in coming up with increasingly comical 'workarounds' rather than admit it's a lemon.

Curious that they would have such brand loyalty when they've being royally screwed by Canon - but that's fanboys for you. Logic and reason left the building a long time ago!

First off who resurrected  this zombie thread?  Anyway, like gt3rs says, 4:2:2 H.265 is not supported at least not yet in the NVIDIA GPUs as you can see from the following chart. I do hope it is something that can be fixed with a driver update and not some sort of HW shortcoming.
I have a Core i9 14 core CPU and an RTX 2080 Ti and my system still had problems editing R5 4:2:2 footage. I was able to get smooth playback initially but it stuttered a bit between clips and after applying two layers of color grading in Davinci Resolve it was unuseable.

As a tip for everyone else, you can get the same feature using gmail by adding +eoshd-com after your name. Gmail ignores the "+eoshd-com" part, but you can see which address the mail was sent to. A few sites does  not allow these kind of addresses, but most do.
Example: unclebobsphotography+eoshd-com@gmail.com will arrive in the inbox of unclebobsphotography@gmail.com
This also makes it easy to block all emails to with this post-fix if needed

I don't use FilmicPro and it seems like that documentation is for iPhones.
The S20 is able to use HEVC which I believe is 4:2:0, 10 bit h265.
I have no idea how they implement their HDR10+, but it wouldn't surprise me if 3rd party programs such as FilmicPro have problems using this features.

I am keeping my R5 order, but not seeing myself selling my GH5 any time soon. Having tried the R5 slightly, it seems like the best stills camera on the market, which shouldnt be ignored. It will also be great for whenever i need video autofocus, which in many cases will be more important than having the highest IQ recording options available. The s35 mode crop might be good enough if i have to use it. The Sony is not an option since i have lots of EF glass and I need a capable stills camera.
I dont put much faith in peltier element based cooling as they are notoriously inefficient. A fan or fan+heat sink might be worth it though

UncleBobsPhotography got a reaction from Geoff CB in Canon EOS R5 has serious overheating issues – in both 4K and 8K
If Canon insist of designing their own h265 encoder and use their own fabs for the prosessor, that's a very valid point to criticise. I can't see any good reason for them not to buy the design from ARM or Qualcom or whomever and get Global Foundries or someone else to produce it. I can understand why Canon want to produce their own image sensor, but for the prosessor they should license as much as possible except for the "Canon-sauce".

    Product segmentation, perhaps?
I think there has been 4 important aspects of the R5 release:
    1) internal RAW took a baby step to becoming mainstream.
    2) 10-bit 4:2:2 Log recording is the new baseline.
    3) 4K HFR (anything higher than 60p) is the new slow motion benchmark.
    4) You no longer need gloves in the winter when operating your mirrorless camera.

UncleBobsPhotography got a reaction from Emanuel in My thoughts on the Canon EOS R5 8K monstrosity - 1TB footage per 50 minutes
I was quite blown away by the AF of the R5 today. I did a test shoot with the sales rep and it would keep him in focus for all situations except when he was moving as if playing dodgeball. Since I'm a GH5 user my expectations might be lower than for Sony users, but unless there is some hidden crippled point (overheating or rolling shutter), I am sold on getting one of the new cameras.

That's easy! Use a sonar! Just don't come complaining about the resolution...
And in this situation you can just hire a lip reader.
For microphones, I can think of a better solution than lavs/shotguns mics.

Line skipping looses light compared with supersampling because fewer photo sites are used and therefore fewer photons are recorded. If you skip every second line, only half the photo sites will be recorded. Using supersampling you would average out 2 photo sites for each pixel (or something smarter) and would therefore get less noise. The exposure should be the same, but line skipping should in theory lead to more noise and moire/aliasing than supersampling. Cropping should in theory give the same noise as line-skipping, but potentially with less moire/aliasing. Have in mind that actual camera performance can differ a bit from how it should work in theory, which Sony has proven.
The word "binning" has been used both as "throwing the photo site in the bin" and "binning together the recordings of several photo sites". The first version is the same as line-skipping while the second is basically a crude form of supersampling.

EDIT: Your post was in relation to the line " I hope they add a crop mode. At least then you can get the same DOF without losing a ton of light.". The BoogieKnight is actually correct, because he mention the same DOF. Using a cropped readout and a faster and wider lens you would end up with cleaner image with the same DOF as lineskipping and a slower/longer lens.

Hmm maybe I'm confused. As far as I saw it, if it's 2X skipped and binned, 1/4 of the light is reaching the same sensor area (fewer photo sites are used) compared to oversampling from the full sensor. I realise that each individual pixel is getting the same amount of light with skipping/binning, but you're losing the oversampling which would be taking 4 pixels and combining them into one, effectively giving two stops lower noise.

I can get that exact same lower noise benefit by shooting with a 2 stop wider aperture. If I do this with skipping/binning, I'd reduce my DOF 2 stops. If I do this with a crop, I have to step back (or use a wider focal length) which means I get that DOF back to where it was.

Of course oversampling has other advantages, but you're going to lose them with both binning/skipping and a crop.

    Great initiative.
I would also like to know whether 4k is acheived through supersampling/lineskipping/1-to-1 pixels/cropping.
This can be just as informative as max usable ISO since it's often less subjective and affects both noise and moire.

UncleBobsPhotography got a reaction from JurijTurnsek in Sony Xperia 1 II smartphone - 4K60p H265 "powered by CineAlta"
I believe the main problem with a larger sensor is fitting the lens. The S20 Ultra is 8.8 mm thick which is considerably larger than the competition. Making the phone thicker will turn away quite a few consumers.
The lens thickness is also the main reason why most tele-cameras on smartphones are so bad. They often just use a smaller sensor but with a similar focal length as the main camera. For marketing it seems better to have 3 cameras even if cropping the main camera will give similar results. The S20 Ultra is one of the few exceptions that use a periscope lens, which in theory could be an improvement.

The S20 Ultra actually has a bigger sensor (1/1.33 instead of 1/1.7), but seems like a failure.  The 960 fps on the S20 ultra is even upscaled 480 fps...
The S20/S20+ has the same sensor size as the new Sony.
