lebigmac got a reaction from noone in Sony A7 series - help me choose
I grabbed an A7 for 400€ used and it is a wonderful camera, esp. when you're coming from m4/3. It fits perfectly in the hand, is really small and is incredibly lightweight, which puts it in front of the A7ii, to my eyes. Image quality is competitive today, I would say, except in low light. AF capability is good enough, if you're not after shooting greyhounds at the races. It's the perfect camera to take into the streets and for travel + if it gets lost it's not the and of the world. Gives wonderful results with old minolta lenses, as well.

Are you recording external and iternal mic at the same time? In this case you need a 3'5mm stereo female jack, with inner swicht (normally closed) that disconnect inner mic when Jack is plugged.

Tried 10bit HDR Log V3 with my Samsung Galaxy 10+. Not impressed. Maybe it's better on IPhone 12.
Keeping my EOS M for a cheap small and light camera with impressive image quality. Gorgeous colors, great resolution at 2.8K crop mode. Especially after 4K up scaling.  Endless fun 🙂

If the II model had been launched as the original, it would have been a lot more popular, but then the same could be said for a lot of kit, but for many, the original Z6 just underwhelmed (compared with certain other options).
Had something like the II been launched a couple of years back, I probably would have  gone with it but it was only the lack of 4K 60 and twin card slots that put me off. The lack of 10 bit also, but that would have been my compromise.
Well it’s still 8 bit, internal anyway and folks are waiting on the 4K 60, so still losing customers I suspect.
Anyway, original Z6 at what are now much lower than launch prices...I like the look of the thing, the size, the weight, the lenses. Tried one briefly, but preferred the XT3 in every way except the lack of IBIS and the XT4 fixed that.
So it’s not for me personally, but that shouldn’t put anyone else off and if you like it, great, go create with it!

As a pro Nikon user for 40 years, I have mixed feelings here. I love my d850 for its still image quality and features. But I’d guess their contract with Sony for the sensor limited the video features and codec. As I look to making more video, I only have to look at a used Lumix GH5S for example to see a simple solution for exceptional video features and in-camera 10bit, which for me are more relevant than full frame vs m43. Disappointed by the Z ii offerings. So I won’t invest in a Z body, and will instead likely add a video-centric camera from another maker, even as I still swoon over my 2-year old Nikon 850.

    Hi,
the price for a Z6 in virtually virgin condition hovers around € 900/1000 in the moment (if seen it for 1250 with the kit zoom), which might make it the best full frame hybrid option on the planet, in terms of quality/price ratio.
What do you think? While the stills quality and the ergonomics are certainly not disputable, what about the video experience? Is the internal 8bit with the flat profile usable? Does it hold up against, let's say the A7iii + it's log? How bad is the user interface on the video side? There have been quite a few reviews reporting an overly populated lcd screen and the inability to display key meters like focus peaking and zebras at the same time.
What are your experiences, especially when working in and non controlled environment w/o a tripod and with natural light? Would you recommend buying the z6 for that price (and a50/50 video/stills environment)?
    Thanks

Maybe, the Z6 is not everyones priority here, but I'll leave my evolving observations here to whom it may concern:

    - Surprisingly bulky and quite heavy, the weight is distributed towards the left side, which makes it outspokenly unbalanced and difficult to hold it with one hand over an extended period of time. Moreso with manual lenses & adapter.
    - The hand grip is not not thought out designed. It's not 'high' enough for a normal sized hand. That is why you'll find a lot of used models where the coating is damaged next to the grip. It's because you find yourself clawing your fingernails into it.

Grip and weight distribution is MUCH better on the A7 or the NX1.

    - Focus peaking works very well, esp. in the great EVF. However, there is no way to toggle it on and off with the press of a button. You are entitled to assign the focus peaking menu to a function button, but you'll have got through this menu every time then, which results in about four clicks to put it on or off. This is quite annoying.
    - You can't use zebras while focus peaking is on.
    - The on screen spirit level is placed in the center on the screen, with a huge fat black ring around it. You literally don't see anything else of the picture, when it's on.

There is a dedicated video mode on that camera, however:
    - Exposure lock only works in stills mode, but not in video mode! There is - however - another way to lock exposure, which also works in video mode, by pressing and holding the jog dial (or a function) button. This might be convenient for stills, but not while filming
    - The only way to set the shutter speed in video mode is "M", in all others, the camera choses 'something' that can't be altered.
    - There is 24p but no 1/48

I‘am sorry, that was a too simple statement. It is certainly judged from a hybrid perspective. And  Iit is matter of taste, not a matter of facts, these days, where esp. Fuji is set to outperform the market in terms of quality and flexibility.

I wouldn't compare it to SLOG as its not a log curve.

Though its a nice flat profile, designed for 8 bit unlike SLOG which doesn't really work with 8 bit IMHO.

I think the Z6 is a fantastic buy for the money.

I don't use FilmicPro and it seems like that documentation is for iPhones.
The S20 is able to use HEVC which I believe is 4:2:0, 10 bit h265.
I have no idea how they implement their HDR10+, but it wouldn't surprise me if 3rd party programs such as FilmicPro have problems using this features.

I can confirm that it does not erase Cine D after update. I can also confirm that the camera can still load Cine D, Cine V and .MOV commands from @BTM_Pix's html file. Though the GX85 firmware update seems really minor. The other cameras got better updates.

I don't know about the A7iii but my A7sii could not touch the DR of the 13stop BMCC, D750 or even the 12stop XC10 and 5Dmkiii raw.
So I doubt the A7iii could match a BMPC4K. At least I haven't seen any footage that points to it being able to. Would love it if it could. Maybe then I could justify it's imo to high price.

So in terms of hybrid cameras - and including the BMPCC4K even though it isn't a hybrid camera - is the a7 III still tops when it comes to dynamic range?
Purely dynamic range. Not colors, not ergonomics, not soul, not flame-proof-ness. Just DR.
I've read Sony a7 III with slog 2 has close to 14 stops of DR.
Is the BMPCC4K able to compete / beat it when shooting in RAW? (New BMRAW firmware was just released, BTW).
Will Z6 beat it once it gets ability to shoot in RAW via hdmi out? (I am reluctant to spend $1,000 getting a recorder, battery and SSD card for it).
What's the DR of the Panasonic S1 cameras like? Another site said that it had 12.2 stops when shooting HLG at ISO 400. I think V Log is a paid firmware update coming down the road, right? (Hopefully it won't be dependent upon the US Postal Service for delivery).
ALSO: I thought someone on this forum posted a few months back that the 8-bit codec of the a7 III actually helped increase dynamic range when compared to 10-bit codecs. Was I dreaming? Was I on drugs? Was my mind being controlled by @mercer cat???
(P.S. I know that Sony cameras - much like my wardrobe choices - have many serious flaws. No need to comment on either of those things here.)

This is what we came up with.. would love to hear what everyone thinks.. we took a different direction on this piece than we normally do.

lebigmac reacted to BTM_Pix in GX80/85 External Microphone Input Modification (if you dare)
So, I've happened across the service manual for our old friend the GX80/85....
A while ago, a brave soul on DPReview cracked open his LX100, located where the internal mics connected and made a breakout cable.

    Its documented here
    https://***URL removed***/forums/thread/3845240
So with the aid of the newly acquired GX80/85 service manual, I had a look to see where the mics were and was there a similar potential.
The good news is that there is.
The mics themselves are located under the hotshoe .

The service manual provides all the information you need to trace the signal and connect a break out to your own connector. You could conceivably do the same for the speaker output and make a headphone port if you were so inclined.

You can use this IR mod guide to get you going with the cracking open the case.
    https://www.lifepixel.com/tutorials/infrared-diy-tutorials/life-pixel-panasonic-lumix-gx85-diy-digital-infrared-conversion-tutorial
And then take it from there with the service manual I've attached here to do the rest of the steps to get to the hotshoe removal.
    LUMIX GX85 Service Manual.pdf
Now, I'm no expert on consumer law but I have a sneaking feeling that doing this mod might invalidate your warranty a little bit so its all at your own risk.
What we could really do with is someone who already has a completely dismantled GX80 to try this out for everyone eh @Andrew Reid ?

I dropped by on Bexhill-on-Sea on the South Coast yesterday on my way to somewhere else, and shot this footage over an hour or two.  No grading, straight out of camera. Manual settings (although fairly limited choice that's all I'll say). Edited on my laptop this evening. I bought the used camera on ebay for £133. I'm not sure if this is the sort of thing you're looking for Andrew.  As long as I don't come last.

If been using it with a 7'' Lilliyput 667GL that displays up to full HD. You can get used for about 30€. Works perfect even when you are shooting 4k, but as hugo_lennart pointed out, you lose some features present on the camera's lcd, such as focus highlightning and overexposure zebras.
