Has anyone been able to test the X-S20 vs X-H2S for video? CineD have the X-S20 dynamic range as lower than even the XT4/XT3 and shockingly even the XT2. Would love to see their testings. Surely it cannot be that bad?
I believe it shares the same sensor as the XT4 but with a newer processor? I haven't see many X-S20 video yet but none of them seem to jump out at me in terms of dynamic range tbh. Cheers in advance

Yes, as he says in the video, people are just looking at that ONE number to make easy choice as to which camera is better. Maybe this is what separates a real cinematographer from wannabes. The image is what counts, not the megapixels (after you get to the "accepted" amount of detail threshold).

What cameras don't use Sony sensors? Arri, RED, obviously Canon, Sigma (Foveon, anyway, the Fp is a Sony sensor), and by all indications, the Blackmagic Ursa 12K.
And I'm unclear about some older sensors, like the Panasonic Varicam/Varicam LT (guess that isn't "old" - it's still being made). That camera was the first true dual native ISO (vs. dual GAIN, which is what most cameras actually are despite being described as "dual native ISO") and predates anything Sony did with dual native ISO tech. So, my guess is they did not make that one - maybe Panasonic themselves or TowerJazz. Someone more internet savvy than I might be able to figure it out.
I don't put much stock in this whole "did Sony make the sensor or not" as it relates to how the image looks. Sony makes multiple sensors used in Hasselblad, Nikon, Panasonic, Fuji, Olympus, Blackmagic, etc. And every single one yields completely different raw output in a number of different metrics. The processing pipeline that Nikon/Fuji/Panasonic/whoever implements matters infinitely more.
Looking at images from, say, the original Blackmagic Pocket vs. the Pocket 4K/6K and preferring one over the other has far less to do with who made the sensor and more to do with what Blackmagic is doing (advancements from their Gen 1 color science to their new Gen 5, for example). Exceptions would be comparing CCD to CMOS; Hasselblad's Kodak CCD sensor clearly is very different from Sony's CMOS sensor, no matter what Hasselblad does. But that's a bit apples and oranges.
Now, should someone (like a big company) start making sensors? Absolutely. Competition is f***ing great, and Sony is bulldozing the sensor market. Samsung is probably best poised to do something like that, and I hope they do.

That's "F2.8 equivalent" by the usual Super 35mm standard.

S35 F2.8 DoF is plenty fast enough for shallow DoF for many filmmaking purposes.

Sony Semicon imposes strict licensing restrictions, one of these restrictions is that certain sensors can only be put in specific products (eg. mobile phone only).
This is why drone cameras from Autel/DJI have only recently started using the more than 3 years old IMX586 sensor.

    Hallo friends,
As a S1 owner I am longing for the awesome features of a S1H. This forum doesnt help it otherwise.:) So I keep browsing the bay for used cameras to show up for attractive prices. This week three auctions turned up, two for S1H, one for S1, all of them with different locations in Italy. None of my questions regarding payment procedure and shipping were answered. Two of them have feedback as buyers only, none as sellers, one of them only a very few as seller with all of them over one year old.
All three of them have reused and stolen text and photos from three other original auctions from the US. I checked that, because I was suspicious of the supposely great deals and sofore I used ebays function of showing past auctions.
So watch out a little bit in search for a good deal and of course happy bidding with valid auctions. Most of them are legit but some of them might not be.

Edit: One of the S1H auctions is still running til tomorrow. So, evaluate the points above.

I honestly don't understand why people are feeling "very underwhelmed" by this camera, what do you expect? I feel the Canon R5 has seriously skewed expectations, but we know in the real world how this has burnt (sorry) potential buyers.
    Who gives a monkey's if it doesn't have 8k?
No other camera in this price range does what this camera does. In some ways it's better than the FX9. Seems like the perfect video tool for those who don't want or can afford something bigger.
Well done Sony! (and please, no hush-hush cripple hammers!!).

A lot of it does come down to expense and time.
1080p Prores is easy to process and has plenty of detail and especially color information for most people. Almost any computer can process it.
Manual focus lenses are cheaper than AF lenses. And older ones are plenty sharp for most work.
Super 16 zoom lenses are cheap and have a very wide range making it easy to get coverage without switching lenses. They are also easier to focus with a deeper depth of field.
Shooting slower and more deliberately means you don't have to shoot as much.
People gave me some s*** for buying a old Sony F3. I bought it to save me time on set. I don't have to rig it up like a DSLR. I don't have to worry about HDMI's breaking, the tripod plate coming loose, or the battery running out in the middle of a take meaning I have to take my rig apart. I put it on the tripod, put a battery in it, and I'm good to go.
I think the reason a lot of people are going back to these cameras is because they know them, it's a pleasing image to their eye right out of camera, clients aren't demanding 4K, and it saves them time achieving the look they want which means it saves them money in the end.

I'm in my early 40's and started solo shooting 20 years ago. No IBIS, No AF......you don't need these features to be a solo shooter. You need to take the time to master the craft better. Please don't take that as me saying you are no good or I am better than anyone else, because I still have a lot to learn myself but not having AF and IBIS shouldn't stop you from shooting quality footage.
Plus, Solo shooters have sooooo many cameras to choose from these days if that's what you need.  BMD are not a compact camera maker like Sony, Panasonic, Fuji etc. They are more comparable to other professional arms like Sony Professional. BMD make much much more than cameras and the consumer market is not really their thing.

I'll admit, 12K is lost on me although I have worked on my fair share of productions where we have been shooting 4K for 9:16 output and have needed to shoot with the camera on it's side.....major PITA!
With 12K at least, we won't need to do that.
This camera is not for everyone, and that's ok. At $10,000 it's attainable to many freelance DP's and the same price as the FX9. Sure, the FX9 is full frame and that is super desirable right now, but currently, the FX9 can't do 4K50/60p in FF and that's a major drawback to many.
If BMD are are showing off right now and that results in super speedy workflows, improved codecs, improved colour science trickling down for me using their cameras at 4K or 6K (advancements in BRAW will trickle down Grant said) then I'm OK with that.

This camera is obviously not marketed towards everyone. I don't know why so many people get hysterical over not needing 12k, 8k etc... They (and many other companies) still have so many great affordable options out there.

The false rumours have nothing to do with Black magic. Pure speculation...

Most people want MFT for the flexibility. I and many others would want the MFT mount, so we could use lenses that are made in mirrorless mounts (x mount, e mount, mtf etc) from companies like Meike, Fujinon, SLR Magic etc... the majority of these lenses tend to all be made for super 35/FF while also available in a MTF mount...allowing them to cover the full sensor, unlike the majority of Panasonic and Olympus lenses. There's also many different focal reducers readily available.

As I stated earlier, the two Fujinon MK lenses would go nicely on a super 35 Blackmagic camera!

I would also prefer E Mount, although I believe sony do not licence it out to other companies.  Probably would have to be a dumb adapter, like Kineifinty...

Anyways If it is a camera announcement at all, it will most likely be EF mount...

S35 sensor does go well in a M43 mount as JVC showed.
Blackmagic have such great innards. It is time to step up the game and put them in a camera body worthy of the image, sensor, codec, and touchscreen UI.
A $2500 Pocket camera with EVF and IBIS would be a roaring success.

The Sigma FP is a 8-bit only internal recording camera, has no 4K60p, no PDAF and Sigma just confirmed it can’t even record LOG due to « design limitations ».

It’s a very powerful camera in relation to its minuscule size and surely an ingenious passive cooling design, but  thermal issues remain and are surely the cause of such limitations.

The S1H, despite an active cooling system and body almost twice the size/weight can only do 4K60p with a S35 crop. No PDAF either on that camera.
Canon chose to unlock superior specs  at the risk of overheating, which I understand is a polarizing decision, however I’m not sure there is a strong case to be made against its thermal balance giving the power it unleashed compared to those two cameras with a passive cooling system.
Sony however, if the spec rumors are true may be on such a breakthrough..

AlexTrinder96 reacted to BTM_Pix in No culture or heritage in Nikon's Z series
Whether it was down to Nikon themselves, Atomos, the patent lawyers or all three, the delay in getting the ProResRAW functionality from announcement to actually being deployed has really set them back with the Z series.
Then having to return the camera for a £200 hardware modification was adding insult to injury really.
If they could have released it at the time of the announcement, it would really have given the Z cameras a massive boost as there wouldn't have been anything out there at that time to compete with it but it just lost all momentum the longer it went on.
And of course by the time they finally did get it out, the world had moved on a bit and its just gone stale and it might be a long way back.
I obviously have a ton of Nikon gear stretching back over decades of using them so I should've been the person to buy a Z6 or a Z7 but I've never really been that close to getting the credit card out for one.
They don't need a complete change of direction but they could shake things up by diverging and making a small full frame cinema camera, particularly as the Z mount is very adaptable physically and electronically.
They won't do it of course.
