It's done! Really happy with it especially when compared to the Sankor 16-S I had a couple years ago. It's pretty heavy but not too bad. The RAFCamera clamps are absolutely perfect and excellent quality. The posted shot was literally me running out into the alley and snapping a shot on auto. Thanks for everyone's help on this!

Wish there were more posts like these. With all of the arguing over specs and brands, I think we can learn a lot from this post.
With a humble AF100, which can be bought for less than $700 on the used market, a great looking film can be made. With a couple grand more, an amazing looking film can be made.
In the end, I didn't care what camera those movies were shot with. I was engaged with the story. I want to see both finished films now.

I couldn't take it and had to buy the camera again. So stoked to mess around with this camera again.
I found some cool footage shot with a wide angle today. When zoomed through it looks like you can achieve shallower depth of field as well. Around 4:26 the stuff shot with the Wide Angle.

The camera is not the thing shooting video, you are. So if you think having a smaller camera will allow you to be more creative, run for it !
PS : Rent one before switching, you never know until you try :D

Justin Bacle reacted to Andrew Reid in Recommended c-mount lenses for Canon EOS M
So it just dawned on me that you can ape the Digital Bolex raw look for £100 with an EOS M + Magic Lantern.
Yes, it's an APS-C sensor, so you'd need to go to about 1536x518 for a 1.8x crop 16:9 to avoid vignetting on 25mm lens.
GH2 was 1.8x crop and I've had Super 16mm stuff work fine on it.
So has anyone actually tried a bunch of c-mount lenses on the EOS M and has any recommendations? Also for decent adapters? Arriflex S16 adapter also would be handy.
And before anybody says "just get a Blackmagic pocket cinema camera", remember the EOS M is £100 used body only and does 18MP stills  Way more fun!!

    Here it is in action

The taking lens I got with my cinelux is a Schneider 75mm f/2 Super
I had to focus the anamorphic and moving the camera back and forth to get sharp focus.

I did try it, you can attach it with a M42 adapter, M42 reverse ring, M42 Helicoid and Step up/down rings with a clamp.
You need the helicoid to be able to focus the system.
The only problem being that the "taking" lens is usually arount 75 or 90mm which isn't wide enough IMO.
Here is a picture of the system (with a single focus solution) that I tried the idea with : https://goo.gl/photos/a5uBojn7vj2bR2HV6
Do try it, it is quite a fun experience

100D is missing from the experimental builds too, sometimes you have to look on the forum amongst the 1000's of posts for someone who has compiled his own build with 10bit in it.
See if you can find one for the 5D Mark II and 7D
In the mean time I've updated the article to say the DIGIC IV cameras don't do 10bit.
These are all compact flash so 10bit missing is no big deal... they can do 14bit just fine up to near the maximum of the sensor.

Justin Bacle reacted to Deadcode in Magic Lantern Raw Video
On Digic 4 cameras the 10bit/12bit raw mode is corrupted in full sensor mode, every other image is pink. reddeercity in ml forums is working hard to solve this problem with his 5D2. In crop mode all of the cameras are working in 10/12bit, they just need a little black level adjustment with exiftool (or maybe this is solved with the last MLV DUMP?)
The secret of the 5D3 4K is not just the 10/12 bit mode but the new lossless raw compression feature. It's possibile to use 14 bit raw mode with 54% compression rate which is more effective then the 10 bit mode alone. It can be combined with 12 bit to get even smaller file sizes (or higher continous resolutions). The strange thing is with 10 bit the compression is not that effective.
The downside: the live view is unusable right now if you use compression, and the recording could stop if the image information exceeds the card's max write rate. So the efficiency  of the compression level is flexible. 3,5K continous recording is possibile if you are using higher ISO values (lower dynamic range, less steps in the highlights, more compression possibile) with the 5D3 such as ISO800+
The MLVFS just updated few weeks ago to handle to compressed raw
The compression is an original canon feature and it could work with any camera from 5D2 through 600D but it's in the alpa stage in development right now.

Justin Bacle reacted to Timotheus in 'Convert' your 72mm SLR Magic Rangefinder into 77mm
Heads up to users of the 72mm version of the SLR Magic Rangefinder (the discontinued one without distance markings)...
The rear 72mm attachment ring on mine had some rotational play. I decided to see if I could remove it. I succeeded, turned out the connector was a step ring glued on! Underneath a 77mm thread, just like the one with distance markings. See pictures.
Trying to remove the step ring (at your own risk ;-)) might be worth it as it brings the RF closer to the attached anamorphic glass, benefiting vignetting.
Conclusion: both versions of the Rangefinder are mechanically the same. The budget version just misses distance markings and got a step ring tacked on (!).

Here is the real question. Did you ever sat in a theater projecting movies in 4k and thinking "I wished the resolution was better". I know I didn't.
I think 8K is way too much as a viewing format. But as always, higher resolutions can see some good uses for VFX and scientific applications.
As for myself, I shoot 1.5k 4:3 (yep, read it correctly) , so I really don't care about the resolution race :D

I don't think rolling shutter would be noticeable as there is not much movement usually in weddings video.
However I think you would be better with a video camera (like the new AE1, the JVS LS-300 or something similar with ND filters, Viewfinder and proper XLR Audio) than with a DSLR if money is not a huge problem. Just my own thoughts, depends on your priorities (Image Quality, Low light, Ease of use, Audio, ND filters, battery life and so on)

Justin Bacle reacted to Mattias Burling in I have problems to speak in front of a camera
    - How do you speak free on camera? Do you memorize a script or is it completely free?
Script is the way to go unless you feel very relaxed. Use cue cards and don't worry to much about jump cuts. There are ways to use them as an effect.
Look at Ray William Johnson's old stuff or I'm sure many here can link to others that use it successfully.

    - How do you feel when you see you on the video? I feel terrible.
Seeing one self and hearing once voice is always uncomfortable. I've worked a lot in live broadcast radio and I can speak for many when I say that the feeling never goes away (exceptions to confirm the rule of course exists).
    Just try to ignore it.

    - What is the biggest positive thing initiate by your channel?
My personal channel is just a hobby and for fun, I don't even really try to make it grow. But still it tends to do so and has opened some doors for fun projects and real work.
I work a lot in social media professionally and there youtube has lead to profit, market awareness, etc, etc.
Its a channel and an outlet for communication with a wide reach.

    - Do you have some tips for me how i can start my channel?
Allow yourself to fail, don't skimp on the audio, remember that content is king.
