Just came out of watching Sinners in IMAX.
What can I say? Its a good movie, I really liked it a lot and I would highly recommend it.
    Cinematography 12 out of 10.
    Acting 10/10
Story 9/10 - I would give this 10/10 if I didn’t think it was slightly inspired by dusk till dawn. If you don’t think so… 2 criminal brothers flee south to some bar to fight off vampires… [SPOILER ALERT] 1 brother is level headed and the other one is off…in both movies there is a girl that is forbidden fruit where the brother that is off wants that forbidden fruit. In Sinners the forbidden fruit is a white girl (black guy in prohibition time), in Dusk till  dawn Quentin Tarrantino (yeah he acted in his own movie) was the creep that wanted to fuck the 16 year old (the forbidden fruit). Look… there are some sequences in this movie (sinners) that you’ve never seen before and that alone makes you forgive the inspirational notes and thats why its still a high 9 out of 10 for me.

    Biggest lessons I learned…
Figure out the story you are trying to tell before shooting. How is the image helping you tell that story?
Massage/manipulate the image before shooting… wear complimentary clothes, move things around… turn an image that would’ve been great with normal clothes and current setup to something more epic.
Last one is controlling light. Yes. We all know to adjust shutter angle and iso in camera, we also know to bring a couple ND filters, pro mist filters… and even lights for late night shooting… but there is a thing and its really magical if you know (again about controlling light)… for example - the golden hour (specific hours in the day where the sun works with you instead of against you). Filming on rainy days….Throwing water on concrete (day or night) helps a lot, something to do with how much light is absorbed vs reflected. Adding smoke (smoke machine) or filming on foggy days (fog machine), it adds layers to the image but it also limits the light entering the camera.

You must be new to the scene... cause this scene isn't even that old. Even the alpha cameras are only coming up on 10 years... we are already in like 5th iteration (especially in the a7r line)... every 2-3 years isn't slow, actually fast compared to Canon's 4 to 5 year per iteration. Yeah... they've slowed down compared to the beginning, but thats cause they know they got the Youtube community in their hands and they are quickly catching up to Canon's numbers. But to say they are "known for its slow, incremental releases..." since when? between Sony a7s ii and Sony a7s iii?

I'm sure a7V will wow... mostly because of price and config.

I'm actually 44 years old, been in it since 2010. My first cam was t3i - been around the Canon camp for a while, my current cams is an R5 & BMCC 2.5K. I also owned a Raven at one point & the prime trio of cinema lenses, downscaled a lot. I like Fuji a lot... had the xt-30 for a solid minute but then sold it. But, I praise Fuji over Sony and Canon all the time. I'm in the Canon camp cause of the eco-system - hard time selling these lenses.

But your 5 year schedule and/or trickling down theory... I think you're hyper focused on the iteration between a7s2 and a7s3... every other alpha camera... put it out sooner (see the schedule here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Template:Sony_MILC_cameras). They didn't have to put out a camera with the latest tech cause they didn't have any real competition.

You are praising Lumix... where is the s1h mark 2? What happened to the S9 isnt that trickling down?

Phones was one the missus and I were discussing just the other day and how, other than some photo/lens options, there hasn't been anything we have been slightly interested in with the last 3 or 4 iterations of the iPhone.
    Nope, nothing, nada.
I think I have peaked for my needs on all things tech whether cameras, audio gear, laptop, phone... Now it's not even a case of 'want', but rather 'might like' at some point if it floats my boat.
I'd rather see innovation now rather than incremental steps of 'progress' of essentially 'the same thing'.

I've often made the observation that for many years (I'd say arguably since roughly the Nikon D7100 era, and even arguably even earlier since say the D7000 or D700) that dedicated stills cameras have got "good enough" for many photography users.
Thus even without the rise in smartphone photography capabilities, then we'd have seen a steep decline in stills camera sales due to the average consumers no longer needing to have a strong driving push to upgrade.
The same thing has now happened with video and hybrid cameras as well, they've reached for most people "the good enough" stage, that upgrades for many people are no longer strictly necessary to do so frequently. (we can leave it to another thread to debate exactly when did that happen.... S5mk2? a7Smk2? P4K? X-T3? GH5? GH4?)
Perhaps something has similar has happened for PCs.
Ages ago it used to be every couple of years the leap forward in computers was so huge that it made sense to consider an upgrade, even for "average joe consumers". Then PCs of the past got "good enough" that consumers might happily go a five years lifecycle with them.
Until now these days, you could get an ancient ThinkPad T440 for next to nothing, spend a hundred bucks on an extra  stick of RAM and a new SSD, then put a fresh OS install on it, and you'll have a laptop that's perfectly fine for the needs of most average users.
It shows that the lifecycles for PCs these days are easily over a decade plus years.
Which is likely also linked to the big drop in interest in people building their own PCs, which is much less common these days.
(And I haven't even touched on the massive rise in popularity of smartphones and tablets, meaning many people don't need need their desktops/laptops, or at the very least use it far less than they otherwise would have)

$600 Euros + upgrade from 7D -> Anything... even entry level stuff... just saying... unless you were using ML religiously, trust me... anything. Shit, the only thing you will be giving up is the weather proofing and the tank like build of the 7D.

If you want to keep it in the Canon family - even a R100 would beat the 7D in the image department (SOOC; no ML).
If you want to venture out of Canon - Fuji... these are beautiful little cameras... even going Entry level here - go X-T30 II.... can't go wrong.
If you want to go full frame - Sony a7 iii - on the Used market (may need to stretch the budget a little here).
If you want to go full frame on Canon - I'm sure you can find an R8 on the used market too (may need to stretch the budget a little here too).
    Good luck.

But most of the time is still 4k for me.

    Funny thing about this…
It was harder to shoot and edit a movie in this day; forget about the price of equipment too.
Even harder to shoot a “good” movie, forget about an “amazing” movie… with amazing characters and scenes…
But, once it was said and done… it was easy to sell… there was always a major buyer/distributor.
Fast forward to today… easy to shoot and edit, hell you can do it all on your phone… you can do it well too… it might take some time to write the script, storyboard and even find decent actors - go to a drama school and take your chances with auditions etc…. Nonetheless the price of admission is super low… again you can do it all on your phone.

However!!! You will have a hard time selling it.

Ha! Spot on! It’s the exact option I’d go for if switching today; a pair of either plus a 100s, all available used.
And may even do so over the Winter after my season has ended…
But waiting to see what L Mount does re. S1 line replacement first, mainly re. a replacement for the S1R.
In my eternal quest for the perfect hybrid set up, I have established several non-negotiables…
Has to be 3 bodies; 2 dedicated to video and 1 to stills and if the stills body has a video capability, bonus, but not a deal breaker.
The stills unit needs to be 50-100mp because I am heading back to cropping (in post plus AI software such as DXO) over bigger/longer lenses and steering away from anything that really needs a battery grip for handling.
The stills unit must have a damped shutter.
I am also moving away from something I wished to explore which was pulling stills from video. I think it would take the joy of photography away from me and make the process, well more ‘a process’.
So a pair of used XH2’s, each with something like the Tamron 17-70 would be direct replacements for my pair of S5ii’s but zero real world gain. More a sideways move…
GFX100s over S1H with battery grip with pair of zooms (weighing over 2kg for the pair) replaced with 2 primes of around 28mm and 85mm and job done.
Just one of several options waiting in the wings but probably the leading contender today.

I would assume - for most influencers the phone is good enough.

I remember seeing some person's home tour - may it was on queer eye (can't remember) and they setup an area because he was an "influencer" - all they had was a ringlight with phone mount.... and I thought... well... record, edit and throw it on the platform - done.

Sorry - Red One - released in 2007 is really the first... so, technically Red should be thanked for the 4K revolution. If we are talking about affordability... sure lets bring Panasonic in the picture... but it has to be in the same space as Chinese knock offs (I'm sorry if I'm triggering some people - but the truth hurts) and we all know Chinese knock offs are cheap.

Yeah, I understand that it sounds ridiculous to say $3000 when we had an Alexa and lighting equipment borrowed. But it's always going to be a big part of the low budget producing to secure the gear for a low cost.

We rented the lenses but the rest of the camera package we could borrow specifically because we planned the shoot in June when 90 percent of the film market in Sweden is on vacation.

It's all part of the producer's job to get as much as possible with as little money as possible.

Additionally I'm certain we could get almost the same result with a pocket cinema camera and cheap lights. There is so much more to filmmaking than just camera and lighting gear.

I'm telling you... people that don't know are completely oblivious... people look at 8 seconds and think thats nothing. But if you are at a wedding or any other event... where candid moments are happening on the micro-second level... those 8 seconds feel like an eternity.
Those that don't know - I challenge you... you don't need to be a photographer/videographer at the event... but the next time you attend one... just pay attention... find those candid moments and just count... 1 mississippi... 2 mississippi.... all the way to 8 mississippi... then tell us that 8 seconds is nothing.
