  1. Maybe you just found your new shooting style... Infinity focus all of your shots and then wrap it in bubble wrap. No need to touch it.

  2. Just use it and let it get scratched up. A little patina never hurt no body.

  3. Some of you saw my skin tone comparison with the GX85 and GH4 that I uploaded last week and most people seem to prefer the ungraded image from the GX85 . That's fine with me as both grades were a little off. But I obviously had to take a closer look to see if I agreed. I suspected that youtube is doing something with the colors when I upload in 4K and it seems I was right. I uploaded a 1080p version and made a side by side comparison. For some reason youtube seems to add magenta when uploading in 4K. The result is that the ungraded footage of GX85 looks better and the graded image (which was a little too much in the first place) looks a lot worse. Has anyone else noticed this and is there a way to avoid it? 4K is on the left and 1080p on the right.

  4. I'm experiencing the opposite. People that are seeing what my NX1 can do (especially after the bitrate hack) are now seeking them out but can't find them.

  5. Experimenting with the GX85. Shooting under sub-optimal conditions. Bright mid-day light, hard shadows, etc. Cheap Chinese speedbooster with a 55mm f1.2 FD lens, B&W 64x ND, and a Tiffen circular polarizer. Neutral color profile -5 -5 -5 -5. Most shots @f2. Here's source footage straight from the cam: https://www.dropbox.com/sh/694tsb6iwy5y6um/AABOcE_3WUiCMY18xyOuTLEaa/GX85?dl=0

  6. Dear creative colleagues, A6300 is optimized. It took a while. With this camera I expanded the analysis to further reduce banding. Primers are now designed for Cine4 and S-Log2 gamma. The new approach was successful. S-Log2 now has dramatically reduced banding and with Cine4 it is not an issue. With this approach the following requirements are necessary to allow Primers to optimize your camera: Two picture profiles: 1) Gamma: Cine4, Color: S-Gamut3.Cine Saturation: 20 Black gamma:wide, level +3 Knee: mode manual, point 75%, Slope +5 2) Gamma: S-Log2 gamma Color: S-Gamut3.Cine Saturation: 25 I put modded Cine4 on PP1 and modded S-Log2 on PP2 for more practical shooting. Modded Cine4 will be fine for most cases and with Primers holds most of DR well, and S-Log2 is useful when you need that extra stop, such as exterior highlights shot from the interior. Cine4 on ISO250 gives a practical switch to PP2 to S-Log2 at ISO800 without having to compensate with f-stop. All Primers for A6300 are color neutral, each optimized for a different scene light values and feel. From lower to higher contrast. If you want higher contrast, make sure you use a dedicated Primer for that, it achieves that differently than with typical post tools. All color manipulations in post shoud be done AFTER the Primer. You can compensate the shadows and highlights, colors have to be intact for the Primers to optimize the response. Few examples with medium contrast response Primer, XAVC-S, shot in 1080p: There are a few more examples on the Primers page. http://omeneo.com/primers/

  10. The Angenieux are old 16mm film camera lenses from the 60s. I haven't shot with them yet, because I just ordered them, but from what I've seen online, they seem to be a little soft and dreamy wide open, but sharp enough stopped down a little... With an innate filmic look to them on the BMPCC and BMMCC. If you're looking for tack sharp lenses, then they probably aren't a good choice for you... If you're looking for softish lenses with character and a filmic look... Then they might be something you might like. Check out the c mount lens thread under blackmagic cameras for other options and there has recently been a few posts with c mount lenses under the lenses section as well.

    Lenses

Just got the Meopta 20mm c-mount lens in the mail, so I used it in a scene on a short I'm working on. I was actually out scouting locations when I found this old, abandoned cabin in the woods. For handheld and wide open... I am digging this lens. I think stopped down a notch or two and she will really shine.

  12. Those are indeed visible differences for as 'ideal' a test as is physically possible since a very high quality zoom lens was used on the same camera (cropping in post after changing settings to simulate an APS-C crop). Since the differences are very subtle, the aesthetic quality boost may be lost on the general public, in the same way as fine food and alcohol, can be etc. Were the Hateful 8 and The Revenant better movies being shot on the ARRI 65? Did they make more money because of the large format camera used? (smaller format cameras were also used). The answers to both questions is probably not significantly. With effectively unlimited budgets, why not shoot on the 'best'? The relative cost of the larger format camera is insignificant to the film's budget. However using the pinnacle-best gear makes the directors and DPs happy, and that counts for something. Using the DOF simulator, I noticed the circle of confusion and other parameters weren't exactly the same between formats. While FOV and DOF will be nearly identical, subtle things as noted such as blur transition region stretching can be analyzed by tracing individual light rays- photons. My crop test was not perfect, however there is a way to study this without worrying about issues of optics or lenses: computer simulation via ray tracing. This could be used to create graphs showing the increase in blur transition regions based on the sensor size. If it's a real effect, the results could be presented to optical designers such as Caldwell to show a possible market for a MF to FF focal reducer. If not by Caldwell, perhaps someone else in HK or CN. Someone with the desire and free time could explore ray tracing to create renders showing any advantages to larger sensor sizes using Blender (free): https://www.blender.org/features/cycles/ . Since this is a controversial subject, showing these kinds of results could help visually explain effects previously difficult to put into words. I need to get back to working on improving content and storytelling- more important than tech!

  13. Ummm... the GH4 keyed nicely in comparison to the BMC because it has almost twice the pixels and can hold more detail. The BMC4K gives you the extra pixels and much more color data. If you're really set on the GH4, add an NX1 to your tests. Don't know how it keys, but (my opinion) it smokes the Panasonic for IQ. Really remarkable little camera and you also get APS-C vs. the little GH sensor. I've pulled hundreds of keys as far back as the Panasonic HMC 150, not even a full-raster chip. But we spent 2 hours just prepping and stretching lighting a very big screen, and lit our subjects properly. (and delivered 720 as i recall). It can be done, but I'd prefer as many pixels and all the bit depth I could get.

  14. Short answer: no progress. This will take a long time and I am trying to do things with a lot more impact first. You should check this from time to time - I keep it up to date, and you will save some time by just checking it. rgds

    A Universe of Colors

Yeah, it's very captivating. I really like your music choice. It feels like the opening credit sequence to a sci-fi thriller with a visual mixture of nebulous matter and alien dna. Nice job.
