Looking ahead to new 2012 cameras – the return of DSLR video with a vengeance

New DSLRs in 2012 are coming

2012 will be the best year for DSLR video since it all began to kick off in 2009 with major releases due from every big manufacturer.

This is a Photokina year starting September 18th as well, where we will most likely see the Panasonic GH3. There are other key events like CES and NAB within 4 months to keep an eye on, particularly for a working Canon’s 4K DSLR prototype.

Shootout reveals Panasonic GH2 resolution at Canon C300 level

Mr Philip Bloom of Richmond has done a revealing comparison shot of the Canon C300 versus Panasonic GH2 with hack and Driftwood’s high bitrate patch. You can watch the test above but I recommend downloading the file (as a Vimeo Plus member) and watching it on TV for best quality.

A bit of Christmas fun – mini shootout and name the camera!

Test scene

You might remember last week Philip Bloom posted shots from the C300, F3, GH2, 5D Mark II and 4 other cameras as a prelude to the test he is doing and that is the inspiration for this bit of Christmas fun. Here I’ve put 5 cameras up against each other for how well they resolve detail and the clarity of their video output. The results may surprise you.

And not only am I challenging the cameras I’m challenging you to figure out which is which! Good luck!!

Canon 600D and latest Magic Lantern hack to bring adjustable frame rates & HDR video

Magic Lantern on the 600D

How to: Install Magic Lantern

I am really impressed with the way the Canon DSLR hack – Magic Lantern – has recently been progressing. Enabling video on cameras that didn’t have a video mode is a miracle in itself! (50D). Putting all the settings into a menu system on the camera rather than in a Windows app like PTools with the GH2 hack – also pretty good. As well as higher bitrate recording, ML has evolved to give us ISO 12,800 recording, peaking, crop marks, false colour, zebras and now even variable frame rates.

Shootout in the snow – Sony A65 vs Panasonic GH2 vs Canon 600D

http://vimeo.com/33927560

Note: the Sony A65 shares the same sensor, image processor and viewfinder as the NEX 7 and Sony A77. Image quality is 99% the same on all 3 models.

As part of my series of reviews on the Sony A65 I shot this comparison yesterday near Manchester, city of Oasis and Frank Sidebottom. The A65 represents the latest generation of Sony’s technology – 24MP APS-C CMOS sensor, ExmorHD image processor with 1080/60p and a 2.4MP OLED TruFinder. So is it any good?

Sony A65 first impressions review – documentary shooting evolves

EOSHD recommended lenses for the Sony A65 / A77

Amazingly Sony have got their flooded production going again and Sony A65s have found their way to England in time for Christmas. I’ve come to the UK to spend some time with family and in Manchester I picked up the Sony A65 with kit lens for £699… Considering how similar it is to the A77 that is a pretty competitive price by Sony and I am sure this is going to give the 600D / Rebel T3i something to think about over the next few months. But is it any good for video?
