What are the details of Nikon’s new cinema 8K/4K RAW codec on the Z9?

Nikon is keeping the details of internal RAW recording close to its chest so far, I think partly because the firmware isn’t yet final and most of the RAW recording capabilities will be added later in a 2022 firmware update.

However what we do know is that Nikon is licensing a RAW codec technology for the Z9 from “intoPIX”.

Quite how they are manoeuvring around RED’s compressed RAW patent is another question mark, but we’ll see if we can figure out some answers below…

Panasonic S1H to Atomos Ninja V 6K ProRes RAW update now available to download

Panasonic S1H owners today can start recording in high-end cinema camera standard 6K 12bit ProRes RAW via HDMI to the Atomos Ninja V.

Unlike many ProRes RAW HDMI outputs this one is a full pixel readout from a native 6K sensor, with dual gain circuitry and incredible low light performance.

Most cameras have to pixel bin to achieve 12 bit colour depth in their 4K RAW outputs from a higher resolution sensor, but not the Panasonic S1H. This should result in the cleanest and best ProRes RAW output on the market.

Fuji GFX 100 is first medium format camera to shoot 12bit ProRes RAW with Atomos Ninja V

Fuji GFX 100 ProRes RAW

Today Fuji confirmed a big firmware update for all the GFX cameras, but the one that is especially interesting for filmmakers is the GFX 100 update. This adds a 4K 12bit RAW output via HDMI which the Atomos Ninja V is able to compress and record as ProRes RAW. This can be smoothly graded and edited in Final Cut Pro X with full GPU acceleration.

The GFX 100 will also receive the new Classic Negative Film Simulation and Color Chrome Blue, which together I found to be my go-to new look on the X-T4 and X-Pro 3. So I am very happy about this.

Sigma Fp monster firmware update 2.0 – ProRes RAW with Atomos Ninja V / Blackmagic BRAW with View Assist! Dual Native ISO support and more!

Download the Sigma Fp version 2.0 firmware here

The eagerly awaited Sigma Fp version 2.0 firmware has been released today.

The camera is now capable of a DCI 4K 12bit HDMI RAW feed which can be shot in compressed RAW format with a suitable external recorder. This enables the use of NLE friendly RAW workflows, in Apple ProRes RAW with the Ninja V recorder and even BRAW with the Blackmagic Video Assist 12G HDR.

This makes the Sigma Fp the first ever full frame camera to offer BRAW support (with the View Assist), and the first to shoot 2K 120fps in ProRes RAW.

You can now make your own Digital Bolex – well not quite. The sensor is smaller than Super 16mm and there’s not yet a RAW output or processing capability, but the Raspberry Pi camera module marks an interesting step towards accessible camera development for enthusiasts and small companies to enter the cinema camera market, much in the same way Digital Bolex did with their successful crowd funding campaign in 2013.

Panasonic S1H gets anamorphic RAW and 6K RAW via HDMI to Atomos Ninja V

Above you can see an advert for RAW on the S1H shot in my home town of Manchester. Coincidentally these streets were where I shot with the Panasonic GH1 for the first time. I have fond memories of 10 years ago in the months leading up to EOSHD’s first blog post, taking my GH1 out on the same streets as featured in the Atomos video. Always great to see how cinematic the city is.

Now at the start of yet another decade, Panasonic is upping image quality again with HDMI RAW on the S1H. What makes this implementation of RAW unique is that it has an anamorphic RAW mode. The Canon EOS R5, 1D Mk III, Sigma Fp and Nikon Z6 aren’t anamorphic enabled in RAW mode.
