This was introduced last week and offers a raft of new features but the one that seems to be catching everyone's eye is the (paid for) ARRI LogC3 option.

https://www.panasonic.com/uk/corporate/news/articles/panasonic-introduces-extensive-new-firmware-updates-for-its-lumix-s-series-cameras-s1rii-s1ii-and-s1iie.html

Surprised there hasn't been a discussion about this already on here.

I'm guessing that could be that no one has yet bought those camera types or is too busy wondering why they are spending so much effort looking after a cat that isn't their cat but has just turned up and convinced itself that it is now indeed their cat to be discussing camera firmware updates.

Or, in my case, both.

A bit of a caveat is that it doesn't work in RAW...

I’ve heard some people (mainly the YouTube shills) say it’s the next best thing since slice bread. Others have said it’s no better than the Davinci Resolce Arri Log CST lol

Wait, so it won't turn the Panasonic into an actual Arri?  Or be all that useful in any real way except for people who want to use a Panasonic as a B cam to their Arri and fairly easily match them in the grade?

ive asked this before, but why not logC4/AWG4?

If I remember correctly Arri created LogC4 to accomodate the increased dynamic range over previous cameras and avoid encoding issues. I guess that since no other camera on the market (mirrorless or otherwise) is able to reach the same numbers it wouldn't make much sense to use LogC4 especially considering LogC3 has been around for a lot longer and there's a huge ecosystem of grading tools and LUTS made for it out there.

I think it's pretty incredible that a small mirrorless camera has gotten this BUT I take nothing said about it so far seriously because the only people who seemingly have access to it are shills (and while I like watching some of them, they are still shills.) It'll definitely be interesting once real users get their hands on it and try it out, but until then its just a "oh, that could be really neat."

I am, however, intrigued by the possibility of more Lumix/Arri collabs and what the future might hold if they are working together.

Exactly the current info is a mess with half of YT saying it’s the same as a simple CST while the other half (shills) are like “omg your LUMIX s1 II is a baby Alexa and and and it’s different cuz cuz cuz arri engineers tweaked the color look look but my affiliate LUMIX sent me this camera for free”

Might be time to release my version for free then!

The download link will self destruct in 48 hours.

Until then... enjoy!

DSC09924.jpg

Works on Panasonic S9, S5 II, GH7 as well as all the new cameras.

I'd welcome any questions, feedback, help making a guide for regular folk, or even comparisons to the official ARRI LOG profile, or even the odd ALEXA. Sample shots also welcome!!

@BTM_Pixhas shot some nice stuff with it already. If you're ok for me to share it?

And the ARRI LUT library is available here https://www.arri.com/en/learn-help/learn-help-camera-system/tools/arri-look-library-app

Installation is via SD card as a real-time LUT so it sits in-camera, next to V-LOG and the regular picture styles.

OK, I have taken a look at the Arri option and not interested.

In side by side comparisons with Vlog, sometimes I preferred one and sometimes the other, but Vlog more times than the Arri.

And because I don’t need to match an actual Arri camera, zero need. And definitely not paying for it!

More interested in the firmware update…

So the S1Rii can now shoot open gate 8k, but it’s limited to 24p, ie, no PAL region 25p? That’s fucking weird!

But that aside, I am considering my next move…

I am looking for:

6k 50/60p, full frame, for screen grabs.

S1Rii offers 5.9k 16:9

S1ii offers 5.1k 3:2

For vertical cropping purposes, there’s nothing in that really because although the S1Rii 16:9 is ‘less tall’, it’s got a bit of extra resolution/detail that makes up for supposedly more latitude 3:2 open gate?

Anyway, I think that is a real world draw.

General consensus seems to be that the S1Rii has a slightly better image and slightly better low light, so all factors considered for my needs, that’s an S1Rii win.

Sony do not appear to have anything sub FX6 that can compete here? But correct me if I am wrong…

Nikon has entered the chat…

The Z8 then, it seems to be all or nothing to me from the specs as in yep, you can have 8k 60p, but it’s raw only, ie, mahoosive file sizes. Is there not an Nlog option for this?

From the spec sheet, it appears 4k is the limit for 50/60p if I didn’t want to shoot raw? Or have I got that wrong also?

Only interested in Lumix, Sony or Nikon for all kinds of reasons so if you even mention Canon or Black Magic, I will ghost you.

I have it in my GH6 and I feel like it's a game changer for that camera. Didn't love the camera when I had it a couple years ago. Felt like vLog was only slightly better than CineLikeD. With LogC, the mapping of the DR seems way better and the images look higher end to me. YMMV.

I am going to try Andrew’s free version and see if that works in any way for me.

I need to take a look at Lumix’s LUT stacking feature as I need to burn it in due to the way I work, ie, bake in both the conversion and a creative LUT.

Not down that before so will need to investigate…

I also need to be able to do it for my stills from the same camera as everything needs to match perfectly going forward.

Do you have those clips that I did with it?

Because I’m fucked if I can find them anywhere !

I’ve got some frame grabs from them (with the base then the different ARRI LUTs applied) when I was moaning on here about the warpy IBIS on the S5ii but not the actual clips.

Not that they are a great loss to the world !

Well that is interesting…

My ‘new’ S1Rii came with firmware v1.2 and Arri log C3 installed so some mug just bought and sold this camera pronto to MPB and I snaffled it for £2700.

Unless I am the mug and they sold it to MPB because of some fault…but then surely they would have sent it back for a full refund to wherever they bought it on the first place?

Someone probably lost over £750 in depreciation + Arri license…

Not that I can use it because my other 3 Lumix cameras will never get option.

Instead, looking forward to giving @Andrew Reid option a whirl, but it’s finding the time, - heavily bogged down with work at the moment…

I don't know what kind of databases exist over there for serial numbers of stolen cameras, but if they're as poorly-implemented as they are here in the states, I also wouldn't rule that out.  Might be less that someone ate the depreciation on their shiny new camera and could be more that someone left a bag with their shiny new camera unattended for 30 seconds on an Italian train.  If so, hope they had insurance!

Nice is doing a lot of heavy lifting there.

But if people don't mind log shots of mainly grey buildings under grey skies in Salford then have at it !

Salford?

I've stayed there when I went to see The Stone Roses on the Etihad Stadium. The apartment was kinda close of the famous (by The Smiths) Salford Lads Club. 🙂
