Lux Shots reacted to Deadcode in Panasonic GH5 10 bit internal recording not good enough
Im grading in Davinci Resolve, and im using an old Dell U2711 (which is 8 bit), and working in REC709.
Used to grade 5D Raw and Sony SLOG2.
In the last couple of month i started grading in ACES, and this is where i can feel the 100Mbps 8bit  from Sony is not enough.

You conclude with "If you want to produce genuine 10 bit colour high dynamic range footage you need to buy an external recorded capable of supporting ProRes 422 HQ or there is not game."
That's why I'm suggesting an actual comparison with Prores that uses real world examples. If you just want to compare between internal codecs, that's a misleading conclusion.
Not all Jpegs are the same, you can actually specify the quality amount and chroma subsampling of a Jpeg when you encode it. Could you specify which type of jpeg you are referring to? Also--what does jpeg have to do with any of this? I'll admit I'm having a hard time understanding why you use it as an example.
Is that a valid assumption to make, though? My understanding is that motion artifacts is one of the main reasons people use All Intra codecs.

To summarize my skepticism: It seems to me that you are judging codec quality purely in terms of adjusted bitrate. If I am misunderstanding, my apologies.

The internal codecs are pretty good at FHD they are excellent and at 4K only the 422 is poor
This is mathematical demonstration am not suggesting what you should use or not or if you want to buy a recorder or not that is your choice but I would not trust youtube as a tool for comparison amongs recorder and internal
there many other benefits in using a recorder other than bitrates a larger screen helps to expose and focus and HDR
Read the post carefully the comparison is between the codecs of the GH5 themselves and therefore relative and factual it has nothing to do with perceived image quality
take a jpeg of an 8 mp shot compress it to thise sizes and see by yourself if you notice a difference
Assuming no artefacts from motion interpolation the size of the I frames determines the quality my calculations just extract the information
it makes me smile that some can post comparison between codecs not even understanding how they work and get away with it so I wanted to provide some back up info
download ffprobe shou few clips of your choice at different settings and the averages won’t change
relative image quality will change but if you can see it or not depends on many factors that are also subjective
It does not matter what you shoot the codec processes everything exactly the same the GOP structure is fixed and the ratio between the various frame pretty much too with minimal variations so you dont actually need to see what you shoot to test if it is correct or not it is a fact you see from the data

i have tried to grade 400Mbps 10 bit GH5 VLOG footage and i was impressed how well the codec holds even with extreme grading. I could not see any difference even in 400% magnification.

The Nikon and Canon seemed to have less highlight retention then the A73, XT3, and GH5S. The A73 definitely held highlights best though by a small margin.

It seems like the best way to see how much 10 bit makes a difference is to do a dramatic color grade across all cameras and see if the XT3 and GH5S come out on top. I have already seen comparison's between a GH5 and A7S2 with a heavy color grade and the GH5 held together significantly better.

Agreed. I was surprised by how often the EOS-R and A7iii would lose focus on a subject for a bit, whereas the Z7 seemed to stick to its subjects like glue.

I tend to think it might have this 8K Organic sensor in it .Co Developed by Panasonic and Fuji. Which if it it does I don't see how this thing can be cheap unless it cost 10 cents to make this sensor LoL.
And TowerJazz also owns 51% of TowerJazz Panasonic Semiconductor Co. (TPSCo) ,an enterprise with Panasonic Corporation.

If Panasonic does a FF camera I REALLY hope they put the GH5s color science in it. It is a noticeable improvement over the GH5.
These are exciting times for video/shutterbug nerds, but especially for video.

I think you are seriously misinformed about the position of video in media creation. Give it five years and video production will outweigh stills.
That is usually the stance of shooters who still long for the smell of developing fluid and dodge and burn techniques.
The future is now, and it's changing everything. No matter what you do, you can't stop it. You either adapt or become irrelevant.

What are you smoking? The brand new Z6 in z7 can't even match what the over a year old gh5 is capable of with regards to video. Not to mention they are more expensive!

The GH5 really is a fantastic camera. It's wild that we're nearing the 2 year anniversary of it and it still has so many features that others do not.

As someone who has BMPCC4K on preorder and was a GH5 skeptic, I only recently used the GH5 in a shoot for the first time and was blown away by the ease of use. The gimbal ended up in the bag, and I shot the whole thing by hand. If it's anything like the micro 4/3 camera, along with a higher megapixel sensor (40 to 50), I'm jumping in.

FF 8K 10-bit & Raw internal..?? with A7S3 sensor ?!!! Why on earth would Sony grant them that? Why wouldn't Panny use TowerJazz sensors?
I gotta seriously question these "leaks"... not to mention such specs would render their $7,500 EVA-1 obsolete.. after only 8 months..

Bring them on. A7S III, GH5 FF, Canon R ...

First one to give me 4K60p + IBIS + good video AF + good codec and/or 10bit + at least 24mpx WINS my money

FIXED!! ?  I just updated the firmware (v1.1) on my GH5s and tested it.  Smooth output via HDMI to the Atomos Inferno for DCI 4k at 60fps 10bit 4:2:2.  Nice Panasonic.  They didn't even take credit for the fix in their firmware documentation.  I guess they didn't want to admit to that one, but really Panasonic does work hard at trying to fix issues.  Happy customer.

As far as that goes, I used to shoot FD lenses on a cheap $100 Chinese speedbooster.  I always liked the look.  Clean but not pristine.  If you want to get away from the "digital" look, that could be one ingredient in the recipe; worked for me.  For those of you shooting manual glass it's an inexpensive way to go, FWIW.

Heh, I  just today got asked "WHAT ARE YOU DOING??" when I pulled out my iPhone to snap a few pics in a pet shop to send the pics of kitties to my gf on my FB messenger.
But once I explained it to her though, she was all cool with it.
Anyway, my point is you can get given sh*t for using ANY camera! Just ignore the haters.

Or even better the Zoom F8n?!
